    Businessman charged with N4m fraud in Lagos

    A 38-year-old man, Kelechukwu Umenne, on Monday, appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly obtaining N4 million under false pretences.

    Umenne, who resides at No. 6, Ajose Court, Lagos-Island, Lagos, is facing a charge of fraud.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, alleged that the accused fraudulently obtained N4 million to help import goods from China for the complainant, Mr Michael Obinna.

    He told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 15, 2015 in Lagos-Island.

    “The complainant gave the accused the said amount to help him import foil plates from China, but till date, he has been evading him.

    “Whenever the complainant demanded for the refund of his money or the goods, the accused threatened to deal with him,” the prosecutor stated.

    Perezi said that all efforts by the complainant to get the accused refund the money was unsuccessful as he kept threatening his life, hence he reported the matter to the police.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 carries a three-year imprisonment if found guilty.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, O.A. Layinka, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

    Layinka ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until Oct. 2 for mention.

    Court slams N1.5m bail on travel agent

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday slammed a N1.5 million bail on a 49-year-old travel agent, Akintola Eyitayo, charged with N8.25 million visa scam.

    Eyitayo, who resides in Ikotun area of Lagos, had pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining under false pretences.

    He is accused of obtaining the money from five intending travellers  –  Benjamin Adebayo, Victoria Okugbe, Nurudeen Aditu, Chioma Chukwuemeka and Mathew Nosiru – on the pretext  of procuring a Cyprus visa for them.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.A Layinka, who granted the bail, said that the accused should produce two sureties in like sum, who must be gainfully employed.

    She said that the sureties should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned the case till Oct. 2 for mention.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in December 2016, at Ijaiye area of Lagos.

    Perezi said that the accused obtained N8.25 million from the complainants on the pretext of procuring a Cyprus visa for them, a representation he knew was false.

    He said that the five complainants gave the money to the accused, having no idea that he was planning to defraud them.

    The prosecutor said that the complainants claimed that the accused gave them fake visas, and when they realised, demanded that he should return their money.

    He said that the accused, however, refused to refund their money.

    Perezi said the offences contravened sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that sections 287 and 314 prescribe three and 15 years imprisonment for stealing and obtaining by false pretence respectively, while section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

    Security guard gets N2m bail for bolting with car worth N3m

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State  on Monday granted a N2 million bail to a 24-year-old security guard, Victor Joseph, for stealing a car worth N3 million.

    The magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, who granted the accused bail, ordered him to produce two sureties in like sum as part of his bail conditions.

    Layinka said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned hearing in the case until Oct. 2.

    The accused, who resides at Alade Avenue, off Awolowo Way, Ikeja, is standing trial on a charge of stealing.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 19 at the same address.

    He alleged that the accused bolted with a car worth N3 million belonging to the complainant, Abodunrin Opanuga.

    Perezi told the court that the complainant had allegedly handed over the car keys to the security guard, when he returned from work on the said date about midnight before he went to bed.
    When the complainant woke up the following day at 9 a.m., he discovered that the accused had allegedly absconded with his car.

    He also alleged that with the aid of the tracker installed in the car, police traced the car to somewhere in Ibadan, Oyo State.

    “Opanuga quickly notified a tracking company, who alerted their security operatives at Ibadan about the theft.

    “The complainant said that luckily for him, the security operatives were able to recover the vehicle and also apprehended the accused.

    “Opanuga reported the matter to the police and Joseph was arrested for further questioning, “Perezi told the court.
    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Court grants siblings N200,000 bail for beating up policeman

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday granted N200,000 bail each to  two siblings who allegedly beat up a policeman and tore his uniforms.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.A Layinka, also ordered each of the accused – Michael Oladunjoye (28) and Sephia Oladunjoye (26) – to produce two sureties each with evidence of two years tax payment.

    The accused, who reside at Church Street, Ayobo in Ipaja, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of assault and unlawful damage.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, had told the court that the accused on July 16 assaulted a policeman, Isaac Akam, at Allen Avenue, Ikeja.

    According to the prosecutor, the duo beat up the policeman and also tore his uniform while performing his lawful duty.

    He said that a fight ensued between the policeman and the duo after the police stopped their car for a routine search.

    According to him, it was the intervention of other policemen at the scene that saved their colleague from the duo.

    Perezi said that the two siblings were subsequently arrested and taken to the police station for further questioning.

    The offences, he said, contravened Sections 173 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes three years jail term for assault occasioning harm, if found guilty.

    The case was adjourned until Aug. 28 for mention.

    Three men in court over theft of truck batteries

    Three men, who allegedly stole two batteries of a truck valued at N95,000, were on Wednesday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, Paul Abacha, 25; Kajima Ibrahim, 27 and Mohammed Kana, 38, all residing at Magodo Phase 2 area of Lagos State, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 12 at about 4.00.am along CMD Road, Magodo Phase 2, Lagos.

    He said that the accused stole the batteries from a truck with registration number LXR 275 XL, property of Gbenga Adesanya.

    “They were caught by some security guards while trying to abscond with the batteries and handed them over to the police,’’ he said.

    The offence contravened Section 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The trio, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.

    Chief Magistrate O.A Layinka granted each of the accused bail of N100, 000 with one surety each in like sum.

    Layinka said that the sureties should show evidence of one year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until Aug. 8 for mention.

    Man faces N350,000 university admission scam charge

    A 50-year-old, Enilolobo Adesina, who allegedly defrauded a man of N350, 000 on the pretext of processing university admission for his son, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Adesina, 50, who resides in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

    Police Prosecutor Donjor Perezi told the court that the accused committed the offences between April 4 and April 12, 2013 at Oshodi in Lagos.

    Perezi said the accused collected N350, 000 from the complainant, Mr Omosowoeni Edamisan, with a promise to secure admission into University of Ibadan for his son.

    “The accused collected the money to process admission for a degree programme for the complainant’s child.

    “After the accused received the money through his Access Bank and GTbank accounts, he refused to pick his calls and all efforts made by the complainant to get his money back were unsuccessful, ” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 prescribes a 15-year jail term for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, granted him N250,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    Layinka said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also provide two years tax clearance.

    The case was adjourned until Aug. 22 for mention.

    Five men docked over armed robbery, get N500,000 bail

    Five men were on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly breaking into some houses in the night and robbing people of their belongings.

    The accused —  Taiwo Yusuf, 25; Sodiq Ahmed, 25; Rilwan Adeyemi, 26; Akeem Ogundimu, 21; and Lekan Shokunbi, 20 — are facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and armed robbery.

    The accused, who are residents of Ejigbo, a Lagos suburb, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Police Prosecutor Donjor Perezi told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large at 1.30 a.m. between December 2016 and June 2017 at Ejigbo.

    Perezi said the case was reported to the police by the vigilance group in the area.

    “The accused have been terrorising and harassing members of the public.

    “The accused with other accomplices entered the house of a woman, Nimota Okumoye, damaged her door and robbed her of two mobile phones worth N37, 000,’’ he said.

    The prosecutor said  members of the vigilance group apprehended the accused in the early hours of the day with some dangerous weapons in their possession.

    “The complainant had raised alarm that robbers had invaded her house which alerted the security guards.

    “The accused were eventually arrested while the other accomplices escaped,” Perezi said.

    The offences contravened Sections 295 296, 297 and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced up to 21 years imprisonment if convicted,
    according to the  Criminal Law.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Layinka said the sureties must be blood relations of the accused and community leaders.

    In addition, the sureties should provide evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until Aug. 21 for mention.

    Olalekan Olatise, 32, aluminium fabricator, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged vandalism and theft of motor parts valued N70,000.

    The accused, who resides at No. 26, Bolaji Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun, is standing trial on a charge of stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 29, at about 2.00 p.m, at Sule Abubakar crescent, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos.

    Perezi said the accused entered the compound of the complainant, Mr Ojo Babajide, vandalised and stole the side mirror of a Lexus car valued N20,000, and the side mirror and crown of a Toyota corolla car valued N50,000.

    He said the accused was apprehended by the security guards in the estate, who found the stolen items in his possession and handed him over to the police.

    He said the offence contravened section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

  • Electrician arraigned over theft of motorcycle

    A 22-year-old electrician, Lateef Sanni, who allegedly stole a motorcycle valued at N115,000 in the wee-hours from where it was parked,  was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Sanni is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The accused, a resident of No. 5, Olorunfemi St., Igando, a Lagos suburb, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large at about 3.30 a.m. on Feb. 25 in Ayobo area of Lagos.

    Perezi alleged that the electrician stole a motorcycle marked WDE 791 VH, property of the complainant, Matthew Rabiu.

    According to him, the accused was apprehended by security guards who saw him riding the motorcycle in the early hours of the day.

    “Landlords in the area had raised alarm that robbers had invaded the area which alerted the security guards.

    “The accused was eventually arrested while his accomplices escaped,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
