    19th Doregos basketball tourney begins Nov. 4

    The 19th Doregos Inter-School Basketball Championship dunks off Saturday November 4 with the zonal preliminaries, organisers of the event have stated.

    Head of School, Doregos Private Academy, Adebisi Adegbulugbe, praised Mrs Clementina Doregos, founder of the competition, saying she has helped imbibe the fitness culture among students.

    “Basketball is exerting, your skill has to be on display to do exceptionally well. Nowadays, young people are not too fit and this isn’t good for their health because they are the future of the country.

    “In an attempt to prevent this, the founder of the competition, a sports enthusiast, philanthropist and lover of children, initiated this inter-school competition, particularly for private schools 19 years ago,” Adegbulugbe said at a media parley in Lagos.

    He added that strict adherence to the rules of the competition had kept the event going for close to two decades.

    “Once you compromise your standard, it takes a long time to rebuild your integrity. So, we stand by what we say we will do.”

    According to the organisers, the 19th edition will hold in four zones, namely Doregos Private Academy, Lagos (Zone 1), International School Lagos (Zone 2), Christ The Redeemer College, Sagamu, Ogun State (Zone 3) and Roniks Comprehensive School, Ejigbo, Lagos (Zone 4) as 31 schools will compete in the preliminaries.

    The quarter-finals take place in zones 1 and 4 Nov 18, with the semi-finals scheduled for January 20, 2024.

    The final of the annual basketball championship is billed for February 15, 2024 at the Doregos Private Academy, Ayobo, Lagos.

    Meanwhile, Topfield School Apapa, Lagos point guard Martina Ilomu has sounded a warning to their opponents, saying they are working to grab a fourth straight title.

     “Schools from Ogun state and Lagos will take part in this year’s competition and everything is in place to successful host them. “ He added.

    Also speaking at the event, the Vice principal of the school, Mr Lawal, appreciated the presence of the program coordinator, the press men and other people present at the conference.

    Students from Corona Private School assured their fellow students of winning this year’s tournament.

    The competition will round up on February 7 next year, with the quarter finals taking place on Saturday November 10 while the semifinals will take place on November 24.

    The annual Doregos Inter-School Basketball Championship has continued to grow in status as 34 teams drawn from Lagos and Ogun States have been confirmed for the 2017/2018 season of the tournament.

    With Kawefunmi Secondary School, Sagamu hosting the qualifying round for the teams from Ogun State, the stage is now set of the commencement of the tournament as the organisers have promised to improve on the lots of the competition.

    Speaking at the press briefing to kick-start this year’s edition, the head of School, Doregos Private Academy, Adebisi Adegbulugbe said the initiator of the tournament; Mrs. Clementina Doregos believes staging the tournament would help to improve the physical well-being of the students.

    “We want to continue to support and promote the vision of our founder – Mrs. Clementina Doregos who has not relent in her effort to ensure that the tournament continued unabated in the last 13 editions and this being the 14th edition of the competition, we will continue to add colour to the tournament and hoping that the players will pick up good qualities that will help them in their career from the competition. We are excited with the increased number of participating teams and we hope that the schools will display health rivalry and compete very well against one another,” he said.

    He however, charged the participants to eschew vices that would bring the tournament to disrepute, while urging them to display sportsmanship spirit. “We will not condone an act that will affect the smooth flow of the tournament and we are ready to sanction any team that make use of mercenaries during the tournament just as we wish all the teams good luck,” Adegbulugbe added.

    Three zones in Lagos and one in Ogun will host the preliminary round of the championship which serves off on November 4 while the quarterfinal holds on November 11.

    The semifinal holds on November 25 while the final is scheduled for February 8, 2018.

  • FIBA thrilled as champions emerge in Doregos basketball tourney

    For keeping faith with the inter-school tournament, President, FIBA Africa Zone 3, Col Sam Ahmedu (rtd) has hailed the organisers of the Doregos Basketball Championship just as a new school – Avi Cenna emerged as champions in the boys and girls events of the competition at the expense of perennial champions.
    Ahmedu, who was invited as the special guest for the tournament, lauded the organisers, while urging other schools to take a cue from them in order to discover more educated talents from the grassroots.
    However, former champions like International School, Lagos and Doregos Academy fell along the way, Avi-Cenna defied all odds to dethrone defending champions – Greensprings School and Airforce Secondary School to lift the two trophies amidst excitement.
    In the girls’ final, it was clear from the start that Greensprings was no match to the Avi-Cenna girls with the Ikeja-based school dominating from the first to the final quarters.
    Inspired by their talisman, Oyindamola Ifeoluwa, Avi-Cenna took Greensprings to the cleaners with a 34-11 drubbing to emerge as the new female winner.
    The final of the boys’ event had all the qualities of a grand finale with the spectators and dignitaries enjoying every moment of the match.
    From the start, Airforce was in full control of the match but a spirited effort from the Avi-Cenna boys led by their marksman – Razak Balogun turned the tidy in favour of the Avi-Cenna team in just four seconds to the end of the encounter. Both teams were tied at 54-54 but the prowess of the Avi-Cenna team came to fore as they netted at the nick of time to win at 56-54 to be crowned the champion of the boys’ event.
    The host school – Doregos Academy has something to cheer as they defeated Effortswill School 19-14 in the girls’ third place match while Effortswill beat Ronik 40-33 in the boys’ third place encounter.
    According to the sponsor of the championship, Mrs. Clementina Doregos, the selected team from the tournament would be exposed to top class training, while winners would represent Lagos in the forthcoming South West championships.
    Over 23 schools from Lagos and Ogun took part in this year’s tournament.

    Doregos Basketball tournament hits quarterfinal

    Seven-time champion, International School, Lagos (ISL) as well as defending champion, Airforce Secondary School and six others have qualified for the quarterfinal stage of the annual Doregos Basketball championships.
    The tournament which is it 13th edition will also have Effortswill School, Ronik College, Regal and Avi-Cenna and Kings’ College slugging it out for places in the last four of the championship.
    In the girls’ event, host – Doregos will be aiming for the title which they narrowly lost missed up from making it to the final last year while defending champion, Greensprings School, Regal College, Effortswill, Solid Rock, Queens College, Avi-Cenna and Airforce completed the list of teams that made it to the quarterfinal round.
    The quarterfinal matches hold on November 19 where the semifinalists will emerge for the competition.
    Also, Coach of ISL, Ijeomah Ernest believes they are capable of holding reclaiming the title this year while other teams have vowed to halt ISL’s dominance of the boys’ event.
    “I think we are still in the right form to hold on to the title. We are basketball playing school and we have consistently shown this in all our performance even to the national level. We hardly boast before the competition and we only do our talking in the court,” Ernest said.

    Doregos pupils sparkle at sports meet

    Pupils of Doregos Private Academy set the mini-stadium of St Bernadette Primary School, Egbeda, Lagos, ablaze with their impressive performance during the school’s 15th biennial inter-house sports competition.

    The competition featured various track and field events including March past, sprints and relay races which showcased the creativity and talents of the pupils.  Parents were not left out as they also participated in a fruit race during which they picked various fruits on the field into baskets.  The fastest fruit picker won.

    After an exciting day in the sun, Doregos (Green) House won the competition with 15 gold, six silver and 11 bronze medals.  Ogunsina (Yellow) House came second with 10 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze; Wosilola (Purple) House was third with eight gold, eight silver and 10 bronze medals; while Abeke (Red) Housecame fourth with five gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals.

    House prefect of Doregos House, Lanre Ogungbemi was happy his house won.  He attributed it to hard work on the part of the pupils.

    “I feel very happy because I have been praying and working for this success.  We really worked hard.  The last inter-house sports, Abeke won and we came second.  But we were inspired to work hard,” he said.

    Best Female Athlete in the competition, Akachi Osuji, won three medals.  She said she was grateful for the sports platform, which helped her to discover her talent.

    Founder of the school, Mrs Clementina Doregos, said in an interview that the pupils – both athletes and spectators benefited immensely from the sporting activity which promoted their physical and mental wellbeing.

    “It promotes unity; it helps to see the whole body is physically okay; it helps the brain.  Once the body is fit and the brain is alive, you are able to think and reason very well.  That is the most important thing.  It is not a matter of coming first,” she said.

    In her remarks, the school’s administrator, Mrs Olufunmi Ogunsi, also underscored the importance of sports in achieving youth empowerment.

    “Organising sporting events such as this, is providing avenues for identifying talents for greater development and growth, as excellence in sports has become a veritable pathway to youth empowerment, achievements, fame and prosperity,” she said.
