Senate to probe Bello’s ‘double registration’

The Senate yesterday resolved to investigate allegations of double registration levelled against Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

The resolution followed an observation by Senator Mohammed Hassan (Yobe South).

Hassan said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed the allegation at a news conference. But it was reported that Bello could not be prosecuted because of his immunity, he added.

He prayed the Senate to look into the matter.

“There is this story going round regarding the governor of Kogi State. It was reported recently that he was involved in double registration.

“Some days or weeks after, INEC addressed a news conference where it confirmed the allegation and sacked three of its workers.

“Now, we are concerned again; it was reported that Bello had been issued another voters’ card from another ward. We are concerned about this, and I think it is very important that the Senate Committee on INEC investigates the matter.

“It was reported that he cannot be prosecuted because he has immunity, but for the purpose of getting this picture right, I think the Senate Committee on INEC should investigate this and get this matter right.”

Senate President Bukola Saraki described the allegation as important and directed the Committee on INEC to look into the matter.

“The issue you’re talking about is important because the stability of our democracy depends on the credibility of our electoral processes.

“And as such, we must ensure that the processes are always what we can be proud of, especially now that countries all over are looking up to us.

“I am happy that the Chairman of INEC is here. It is something he could look into and come back to tell us where the issue is.”

  • Double Wahala, double drama

    Double Wahala, double drama

Big Brother Naija (BBN) 2018 started with a characteristic bang on January 28. When the last edition of the reality show ended on April 9, 2017, it was uncertain when the next one would happen.  Big Brother Naija, which was broadcast on pay-Tv from January 22 to April 9, 2017, had replaced Big Brother Nigeria, which was launched in 2006. Considering the 10-year pause between the first and second seasons, it is remarkable that the third season is happening a year after the second one.

The winner will take home N45 million and a new SUV after surviving the twists and turns that come with the 85-day show. To make progress, the housemates need to win the endorsement of the voting public, and no one is ever sure how the public will vote. Last year, the prize money was N25 million plus a new SUV, meaning it’s a bigger show this time.

The General Manager, Sales and Marketing, MultiChoice Nigeria, Martin Mabutho, was quoted as saying: “The last edition of Big Brother Naija was incredibly successful and we see just how much the show continues to resonate with fans in Nigeria and around the continent.”

There is no doubt about the show’s popularity. This is how a vivid on-the-spot account last year captured the reality of the show’s mass appeal: “Winner of reality show – Big Brother Naija (BBN) – Efe Ejeba yesterday arrived into the warm embrace of his admirers. The crowd of fans in branded T-shirts had waited patiently for about three hours, singing and dancing at the Arrival Wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, to give a rousing welcome to Efe. Efe, who arrived in Nigeria with Bisola, the first runner-up, was further delayed by airport officials and co-passengers, who struggled for photo ops at the luggage arena after disembarking from a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg, where the show was recorded for 78 days.”

The report continued:  “Outside the airport, it was hectic for the team of policemen and protocol officers from MultiChoice, organisers of the show, to shield them from the crowd, and usher them into the waiting convoy… In the last three months, Big Brother Naija was estimated to be the most watched show on the African continent, shutting down Instagram, Facebook and Twitter with trending issues daily.”

It is noteworthy that the show attracted various criticisms from various quarters last year when it started, and even when it ended, particularly the emotionally charged argument that the choice of South Africa for a Nigerian-content show was inapt, if not insulting to a country that enjoys being described as “Giant of Africa.”  Another major criticism of the show was its alleged devaluation of moral values by the depiction of an apparently amoral universe. Also, the show was criticised for its alleged artificiality, which contradicted its supposed reality. In addition, it glamourised vanity and materialism, critics said.

Indeed, South Africa’s role as host of the show was such a hot issue that the Federal Government directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to investigate whether the offshore arrangement had breached the Nigerian Broadcasting Code in any way. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had said in a statement: “As a country of laws, only the outcome of the investigation will determine our next line of action. ”

It is interesting that, despite the investigation, the show went on to the end, suggesting that the investigators found nothing amiss. It would appear that the explanation by MultiChoice made sense and the arrangement could not be faulted on legal grounds.   A defensive statement issued by the company had said: “We have a fully equipped house in South Africa, which is used for the Big Brother shows. This means that we are able to achieve high production values whilst meeting tight timelines and ensuring the show comes to our viewers on time as planned, and with the same globally renowned quality. The house has played host to other Big Brother countries including: the general Big Brother Africa, Mozambique, Angola and now Nigeria.” The point is that nationalist and patriotic sentiments were not strong enough in this case, and the organisers and sponsors based their calculations on unsentimental business considerations.

Talking of the business angle, it’s a profitable venture for the organisers.  An analytical report last year said: “During the final live eviction show on Sunday 2nd of April, Ebuka announced that for that week only, they received over 11 million votes. Although not all votes were through SMS, which by the way cost ?30 per vote, a large percentage could have come through that channel. At ?30 per vote, 11 million votes amount to ?330m in just one week out of the eleven that Big Brother Naija ran for. Usually, telcos take 70% of revenue generated on SMS shortcode services. That leaves about ?99m for MultiChoice, the organisers. This amount could be much higher, depending on the revenue share agreement between MultiChoice and the telcos. Remember that the above figures reflect only one week of voting…”

There is no question that BBN has its upsides, the winner’s enrichment being one.  It was a turning point in the life of Efe, the 23-year-old Economics graduate of University of Jos who won last year.  Another positive side of the show is its projection of Nigeria and Nigerians. It is not only entertaining; it is also enlightening, considering its focus on human interaction in a “special living environment.”

BBN3 started with 20 “unique, diverse and interesting Housemates”: Nina, Vandora, Teddy A, K.Brule, Princess, Alex, Dee-One, Miracle, Ahneeka, BamBam, Rico Swavey, Bitto, Khloe, Ifu Ennada, Angel, Leo, Anto, Cee-C, Lolu, and Tobi. According to the organisers, “It’s going to be a long and bumpy ride and the stakes are high…The game will challenge every part of the Housemates talents and will expose all of their weaknesses too.”

This year, it’s Double Wahala, meaning “there would be double entertainment, double wahala, and double eviction. The housemates will be paired, and this means that if one housemate gets evicted, his or her partner leaves too. If a housemate gets a reward or punishment, the partner will also be at the receiving end.”

In the final analysis, it is a thought-provoking reality that over a decade after the show’s first season, Nigeria is still considered unsuitable for hosting it.

  • ‘NLNG Act amendment amounts to double taxation’

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) General Manager, Production,  Tayo Oginni, has said amending the NLNG Act would lead to double taxation. This is because gas suppliers are already paying NLNG  the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) three per cent levy.

Oginni, according to the firm’s General Manager, External Relations Division, Kudo Eresia-Eke, spoke  while briefing international media correspondents and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Managing Director, Mr Bayo  Onanuga, when they visited the NLNG plant facility in Bonny, Rivers State.

The planned amendment, he said,  was inimical to the oil and gas industry, especially when the country should be developing its vast gas resources and attracting foreign direct investments into the country.

He said after nearly 30 years of attempting to start the LNG project in Nigeria, it was the enactment of the NLNG Act that made it possible for the NLNG to be established. NLNG’s   establishment facilitated the Final Investment  Decisions (FIDs) for the six train, which earned the country the reputation of the first growing NLNG project in the world. The milestone, Oginni said, would be watered down by attempts to change the rules of the game built into the Act.

Recounting his experience with the NLNG project,  he said the loss of hope experienced prior to the incorporation of the NLNG again manifested in the NLNG’s bid to expand its production facility with Trains 7 and 8 as a result of lack of investment in the upstream sector to guarantee gas supplies.

He called on the Federal Government to preserve the sanctity of agreement in the NLNG Act and pass the Petroleum Industry Bill to spur exponential growth in the oil and gas industry in the country.

“The Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) Fiscal Incentives, Guarantees and Assurances Act (NLNG Actallowed investments to flow into the country. It provided investors the confidence that any agreement entered into would be respected and preserved. To amend the Act will not help Nigeria, NLNG and its hopes for expansion. It will erode investors’ confidence that the Act provided in the first place,”he said.

He pointed out that the imminent requirement of over $1 billion investment every year in the upstream for the next few years in order to guarantee steady gas supply to ensure that NLNG’s Trains 1 – 6 can be kept full over the contracted life of the plant, will be impossible with the amendment.

“It will also mean an immediate loss of foreign investment of US$25 billion in respect of Trains 7 and 8 investment ($15 billion by the upstream and USD$10 billion for construction). This will also cost the Niger Delta region and the country about 18,000 jobs required for the construction activities of the new trains,” he added.

Commenting on the achievements by the NLNG, the company, he said, generated $90 billion in revenues as at 2015, paid $5.7 billion in taxes as well as committed more than $200 million to corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects in the Niger Delta, especially in capacity building and infrastructure development. He said the  company was to commit some N60 billion to see the Bonny-Bodo road come into reality and commit N3 billion annually for the next 25 years to transform Bonny into another Dubai.

  • Double registration: INEC under pressure to swap data, says blogger

    •Govt: allegations baseless and unfounded

Renowned blogger, Comrade Austin Okai, has accused Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello of attempting to swap the computer used in his double voter registration saga.

Okai, who spoke during Eid in Lokoja, called for an overhaul of INEC workers in Kogi to stem further manipulations.

He maintained that the governor is running around to repair his image, following global condemnation of his double registration.

His words: “The current impasse on Governor Yahaya Bello’s double registration is a pointer to the lack of confidence in INEC, both in Kogi and the headquarters, in future elections. I urge INEC to replace all card readers meant for kogi elections in the future.”

Okai added that the investigative panel compounded the scenario with their plans to swap the laptop used for the registration.

According to him, the data on the laptop was deleted and the Electoral Officer, Mr. Ajani, brought another for scrutiny.

Okai challenged INEC to request for the laptops in Lokoja council and recall the HOD ICT and VOTER Registry, the accountant and Administrative Secretary, whose complicity is obvious through inducement from the government, for investigation.

But Governor Bello, through his Director General on Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, described the allegation as characteristic of the author and his sponsors. “It is baseless and unfounded”, he said.

His words: “If Governor Yahaya Bello is not popular, why are they jittery? The governor is not prepared for the 2019 politics yet. He has a mandate to discharge and he will work for the people until his last day in office.

“It is unfortunate that the social media has provided a platform for such an unintelligent allegation. We do not have to react to such. Governor Yahaya Bello does not work in INEC and clear statements have been made that the governor was in Dubai on the said day.

“INEC has not started registering people offshore and it is free to investigate any issue that affects it.

“The governor is committed to fulfilling his obligations to the people. He is busy building roads, schools, hospitals and making agriculture the epicentre of our economic prosperity. These are the issues that can attract the attention of the governor.

“The media should concentrate on development rather than promoting irrelevant issues. We want the media to partner us to take Kogi to new heights.”

    Igbinedions set for double celebration

WHEN good news come, they sometimes do so in droves. This is the case in the household of the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion. So soon after the patriarch of the famous Igbinedion family celebrated his 82nd birthday, the family is getting ready to throw open the gates in a double celebration of the weddings of their two daughters, Orobosa and Ewemade.

Beautiful Orobosa is the youngest daughter of Lady Cherry Igbinedion, wife of former Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion. Her beau-to-be is no less a person than Umar Mantu, son of former deputy Senate president, Ibrahim Mantu. Earlier in April, the soon-to-be couple held their introduction at the Signature house of the Esama, followed by a post-introduction ceremony which was marked by pomp and ceremony.

Suave businessman and bureau de change operator, Umar, used to be a ladies’ man until charming Orobosa stole his attention permanently. The traditional wedding is slated for Saturday September 24, while Orobosa, who has been given the Islamic name Sa’adiyyah, will undergo the Islamic fathia rites on October 6. The grand finale will be the white wedding earmarked for October 28 in Cape Town, South Africa.
