    Teluwo, Borisade honoured  at Dowen College’s Inter-House Sports

    Dowen College, Lekki, has  held its inter-house sports competition at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Lagos.

    The event also recognised the Sports Ambassador, Dr. Adewale Teluwo, founder of Obanta Football Club, alongside the Chairman, Board of Governors, Dr. Taiwo  Borisade.

    In attendance were  parents, guardians, school administrators, sports enthusiasts,  including the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende.

    Principal of Dowen College, Dr. Adebisi Layiwola, described the students as the heroes of the day and urged them to seize the opportunity to display their talents.

    She encouraged the competitors to participate with integrity, respect, and a strong sense of sportsmanship, noting that regardless of the outcome, all participants were winners.

     “This is your moment to shine. Compete with integrity, respect one another, and enjoy the experience. Whatever the outcome, you are all winners,” she said.

    Dr. Layiwola also commended the staff, coaches, and teachers for their dedication in preparing the students for the competition and called on everyone present to uphold the values of sportsmanship to make the event memorable.

    The ceremony featured the swearing-in of officials, oath-taking by referees and competitors, and the lighting of the torch, officially declaring the competition open.

    The march-past followed, beginning with Emerald House (Green House), which impressed the audience with a colourful display. This was followed by Ruby House (Red), Sapphire House (Blue), and Topaz House (Yellow), all of whom displayed discipline and creativity.

    Speaking at the event,  Ogunlende hailed  the students for their impressive performances and the organisers for a well-coordinated programme, even as he praised the level of creativity and discipline displayed during the march-past.

     “You are all winners today, but there must be an ultimate winner. Whoever emerges victorious will truly deserve it,” he said.

    The track events kicked off with the 800-metre race. In the girls’ category, Sapphire House emerged first, followed by Ruby House, while Emerald House initially led the race. In the boys’ category, Ruby House claimed first position, with Topaz House finishing second.

    In the 100-metre junior race, Sapphire House won the girls’ category, while Topaz House won the boys’. For the 400-metre race, Sapphire House emerged winners in the girls’ category, while Topaz House dominated the boys’. In the senior category, Ruby House won both the boys’ and girls’ events.

    Other activities included relay races, long jump competitions, and victory ceremonies, adding excitement to the day. The event also featured participation from invited primary and secondary schools.

    Dr. Layiwola explained that the inter-house sports competition was organised to help students develop physical fitness, teamwork, and character.

    College to develop students’ tech, entrepreneurial skills

    Critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and a special focus on developing students’ technical and entrepreneurial skills are imperative.

    This was made known by Principal of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, Dr. Adebisi Layiwola at the school’s Founder’s Day Anniversary and Prize Giving Ceremony in Lagos. It had the theme: “Excel Beyond Boundaries”.

    Layiwola noted that the college is offering innovative programmes aimed at sharpening 21st-century skills of students.

    She said the gathering was to recognise young achievers, whose diligence and excellence earned them awards for outstanding performance during the session.

    “We gather to celebrate our exceptional students- young achievers who have distinguished themselves not only in academics but also in various other areas of school life. In particular, we recognise those whose diligence and excellence have earned them awards for outstanding performance during the just-concluded session,” she said.

    The principal said the session’s theme, “Excel Beyond Boundaries”, underscored the need for students to put in their best in all endeavours.

    “Our theme reminds us of the need to put in our best in everything we do. We are indeed committed to encouraging students to strive for excellence in every aspect of school life, overcoming obstacles and challenges, fostering a mindset of continuous improvement and being the best versions of themselves at work and at play,” she stated.

    Guest of honour, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Cordros Capital Ltd, Mr. Wale Agbeyangi, urged students not to be limited by circumstances and push beyond perceived limits.

    Addressing the students, Agbeyangi said:  “Your dreams are valid. No dream is too big if you are willing to work for it. The world you are entering is changing faster than ever before – technology, innovation, and creativity are rewriting the rules daily.

    “To thrive in this world, you must do more than pass exams; you must cultivate discipline, curiosity, and courage. Excellence is not an accident, it is a habit. It is built in the little choices you make each day: to study when it would be easier not to, to speak the truth when it would be easier to compromise, to push yourself when it would be easier to quit.”

    The Principal of Dowen College, Lekki Lagos, Dr. Adebisi Layiwola, has urged pupils of the school who just graduated to utilise the knowledge gained to build and serve a greater purpose as they move to another phase of academics.

    She spoke at the school’s graduation which was held on its premises in Lekki, Lagos.

    Adebisi said the school is proud of them because they have developed critical thinking skills, sound character, and how to adapt to new technologies.

    She noted that the education they received was not just a passport to personal advancement, but a call to influence their generation positively. She described them as authors of tomorrow’s breakthroughs, the solution-bearers, and the ambassadors of themselves, their families and the school.

    “Our dear Class of 2025 as you leave the familiar, I challenge you: be more than successful – be significant. Let your success serve a greater purpose. Use your knowledge to build, not to destroy. Use your voice to uplift, not tear down. And let your light so shine, that others may find their way because you dared to lead.

    “You have not only mastered your subjects-you have developed your character, you understand what it means to walk in integrity, empathy, and vision. We are indeed proud of you,” she said.

    The valedictorian, Sameerah Lawan Musa, who was delighted, said her personal beliefs align with the college’s motto “to be the best,” hence she strives to be the best at all times.

    Dowen Principal, others to pupils: be relentless

    The Principal and Head of School of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, Dr. Adebisi Layiwola, has urged pupils of the school to be relentless in their pursuit of excellence.

    This followed their outstanding performance in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) and other areas.

    The principal gave a report at the school’s 27th Founder’s Day service and prize-giving ceremony, which held in the school last week.

    She praised the Class of 2024 for achieving  a 97.4 per cent credit pass rate, with distinction grades reaching 82.2 per cent and 45 per cent of the results earning A1 grades in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), adding that their performance in other external examinations, including the IGCSE, BECE, and Checkpoint, was equally commendable.

    She said in line with this session’s theme: One School, One Vision, Endless Possibilities, the school has introduced additional innovative programmes designed to sharpen critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication;  and also with a special focus on developing technical and entrepreneurial skills.

    The principal said the programmes are strategically integrated into the curriculum to empower pupils to be future leaders, global citizens, and lifelong learners.

    The keynote speaker, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Institute of Directors Centre for Corporate Governance (IoDCCG),  Mr. Urum Kalu Eke, advised the pupils not to give up on their dreams, but unleash the power and ingenuity in them.

     He urged school authorities to leverage alumni power, partner with the corporate world and create endowment for sustainability.

    Eke announced the establishment of an award of scholarship for best student in Mathematics, which he would sponsor for five years.

    The Venerable Henry Adelegan of the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos, in his exhortation,  said success is the result of attitude, a deliberate action.

    He counselled the pupils to be focused and diligent.

    Outstanding pupils were giving prizes and scholarships.

    Dowen College impressed with pupils’ performance in WASSCE

    Pupils of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos have impressed the school management with their performance in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

    In a statement, the school hailed the performance of the pupils in the recently released WASSCE results.

    Commenting on the achievement, the Principal/Head of School, Dr. Bisi Layiwola, attributed the feat to the holistic teaching and well-rounded nurturing which the school administers on the learners.

    She noted that the hard work of dedicated teachers and the resilience and determination of the learners also made the feat possible.

    She said: “The Grade Result Analysis came out as: A1 Grade- 45.0%, A1 – B3 Grades – 85.2%; A1 – C6 Grades – 97.4% and overall pass rate was 99.7%. Our focus is to produce outstanding students who will be ready to occupy their rightful places in the near future. The holistic teaching and well-rounded nurturing of our learners have had significant impact on them.

    “Also, the hardwork of our dedicated teachers and the resilience and determination of the learners made it possible to perform well. Our mission is to be the best and we won’t relent in our efforts.”

    The school also applauded parents, including those based overseas for their dedication and constant calls to monitor their children’s progress on all fronts.

    College shines in Conrad challenge

    Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, has qualified for the next round, semi-final of the Conrad Challenge.

    The school has three teams at the 2023/2024 competition which  are ACE, SAE and CHE.With their semi-final qualification, they are one step to the finals and two steps to NASA Space Station in the US.

    The Conrad Challenge is a purpose-driven innovation competition creating the next generation of entrepreneurs who will change the world.

    It involves  entrepreneurship and innovation through Aerospace & Aviation, Cyber-Technology & Security, Energy & Environment and Health & Nutrition.

    Team ACE is working on eradicating alcohol-induced cancer premising its endeavour on the scientific confirmation that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer.

    Hence, the team is creating an app that contains enlightenment campaigns on how alcohol causes cancer, rehabilitation plans for alcohol-addicts, alternative sources of income for brewery workers and palliative care for cancer patients.

    For Team SAE, its project is based on the eradication of smoke addiction since smoking causes many health challenges like cancer, lung diseases, heart disease, etc. Team SAE is also creating an app that contains enlightenment campaigns on health risks associated with smoking, rehabilitation plans for those addicted to smoking and alternative sources of income for tobacco farmers.

    The third team,CHE is working on getting clean and healthy environments all over the world to mitigate the annual loss of millions of plant and animal lives to unclean and unhealthy environments via land, water and air pollution. Therefore, it is working on an creating an app that contains enlightenment campaigns on the benefits of having the  environment clean at all times and the health risks and dangers associated with unclean environment.

    Dowen College gives scholarship to pupils on 26th Founder’s Day

    Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos has given scholarship to 46 outstanding pupils at its 26th Founder’s Day Thanksgiving Service and Prize-giving ceremony  held in Olumide Phillips Hall of the college.

    Its principal, Dr. Adebisi Layiwola, while speaking at the event, noted that the school remains committed to academic and moral excellence.

    She noted that pupils, who distinguished themselves, got scholarship and awards, adding that their tuition fees for an academic year are waived.

    “We have given the pupils various scholarships. If you score 90 per cent and above in your studies, automatically, the tuition fees for the next academic year is waived. Also, those who write entrance examination and score well and maintain the score, get scholarship for six years. We pay great attention to excellence. We remain committed to it, whether in academics or co-curricular activities. We place premium on academics and character development and nurture our pupils’ talent in other areas,” she said.

    The principal said pupils of the college are doing well in academics and other areas, adding that its alumni are proving their mettle all over the world.

    The college and pupils received many awards recently, among them the British Council International School Award 2022-2025 and the Safe Schools Lagos (SSLAG) Beacon of Safety Award last month.

    Dowen College gets Beacon of safety award

    Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos has been honoured with  the Beacon of Safety Award by the Safe School Lagos (SSLAG), an agency of the Lagos State Government.

     The agency is an arm of the Lagos State Safety Commission aimed at promoting safety practices in schools.

    Principal of the School, Dr. Adebisi Layiwola, speaking at the award night in Lagos, described the award as a big deal for the school, adding that its hard work eventually paid off.

    “It is a big deal for us. We have been working to clinch this award. We have worked hard. We are very safety-conscious. The entire school community put school safety at the heart of what we do.  We remain committed to safety and security and we are happy we clinched this award,” she said.

    The principal reiterated the school’s commitment to safety and security of staff and pupils. She said  the school had instituted many safety initiatives such as creation of safety clubs, appointment of safety ambassadors, capacity building for teaching and non-teaching staff, among others.

    Layiwola noted that the school worked with the agency first, leading to series of trainings on safety and security.

    “When SSLAG was initiated, we were the first set of people they worked with. We cooperated with them. They trained us. We have a safety management in place now. Each person is responsible for safety. So, everything ties up beautifully.

    ‘’Safety is all about being conscious of yourself and being aware of your environment and prevent anything that is hazardous by putting effective measures  in place,” she added.
