A Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mohammed Yakubu, has allegedly shot dead a fashion designer, Jamiu Ayoade, and injured two others.
Yakubu, the DPO of Ijeshatedo, was said to have shot the late Ayoade, who was at a friend’s birthday party with his lover, at close range on Sunday.
The Chief Superintendent (CSP) was said to have shot him because youths at the party refused to run at the sight of policemen.
But the police denied its officers fired any shot, insisting that cops went there to arrest suspected cultists.
The DPO, it was gathered, alighted his patrol vehicle, walked up to the late Ayoade at 49 Wosilat Daudu Street, Ijeshatedo, and shot him on the head.
The injured, were said to have been hit by stray bullet.
According to the source, the DPO stormed the area with some of his subordinates in two patrol vehicles.
During the first coming, they observed what was happening, left and returned to open fire on the youths.
While one of his men allegedly shot into the air, the DPO, it was gathered, walked up to Ayoade and reportedly shot him.
There was still bloodstain on the floor of the house yesterday.
Jelili Bakare whose brother was celebrating his birthday, claimed that the DPO called for reinforcement after the shooting.
He said: “My brother was having a low-key party with his friends at our late father’s house when the DPO and his men stormed the place. It was around 6:30pm that they came first. The DPO called one Mama Aliyat, a woman on the street, and they left.
“Surprisingly, the policemen came back after some minutes. One of the officers, who followed the DPO shot into the air, thinking that some of the youths would run away.
“But when they didn’t run, the DPO came down from his vehicle angrily and went to where Ayoade was sitting in the corridor. He shot him on the head at close range.
“After the shooting, the DPO called for reinforcement from other police divisions in the area and told them the youths were armed with cutlasses and that broken bottles littered the venue.
“But the other DPOs left after they didn’t see traces of violence at the scene. We went to Itire-Ikate Local Council to complain but he told them that the deceased has been on their wanted list. We were disappointed.”
The late Ayoade’s elder brother, Taofeeq, called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni for justice. He said his brother was an easy going person.
He debunked the allegation that he was on the police wanted list, noting that his brother had never been to a police station in his life.
He said: “What annoyed us most was the allegation of the DPO that my brother had been on their wanted listed. Wanted list for what purpose? We are calling on Lagos State government and the Commissioner of Police to come to our aid.
“As I speak with you, my mother is in serious condition. She has been weeping since that day. We have buried my brother in accordance with Islamic rites.”
According to the command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, the DPO and his men heard gunshots and they were attacked with broken bottles.
He said: “There wasn’t any shooting from the police. What the DPO said is that an informant gave details about the cultists’ activities and he had surveillance in the area until they started whatever social activities they were involved in. He said he had his watchful eye on the area, only to come for the arrest of the members, who were all in white and they threw broken bottle at the police.
”He heard gunshots at the background. After that, he went to disperse them with his men arresting one suspect and retrieving exhibits. It was later that he heard someone died and they were coming to burn down the division, so, he called for reinforcement. The arrested suspect is assisting police investigation. The death may not be a related to the raid.

Residents accuse DPO of intimidation
•‘Allegation not true’
SOME residents of Itire in Lagos Mainland have accused the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of intimidating them because of a woman.
Residents of 10, Araromi Street, Itire, said they have been at the DPO’s mercy following a rift with a co-tenant, Maryam Wahab, described as acquaintance of the DPO.
But the DPO has denied the allegation, accusing the tenants of trying to drag him into their dispute.
The residents, including 49-year-old Mrs. Kemi Labisi, daughter of the 90-year-old landlady, Mrs Claudina Alayande, were remanded in prison for over 10 days, after their arraignment in court.
It all started when Wahab chased away a woman, Lola Kalejaiye, she was harbouring during a scuffle. Kalejaiye was said to have moved her things into the apartment of another neighbour, Seun Arowolo.
But Wahab felt slighted by the action of Arowolo, a make-up artist, who allegedly declined her request for a tattoo on a sensitive part of her body.
According to Arowolo: “the whole thing is strange. Maryam has made our lives impossible for doing nothing to her. I am a make-up artist and I draw tattoos. I am also a hair stylist. But Maryam came to me when I moved into this compound and told me to draw tattoo for her. I wasn’t comfortable with the area she wanted the tattoo and I told her I won’t unless her husband personally told me to go ahead.
“Then, before I moved into this compound, I used to fix Lola’s hair. I have known her before packing into this compound. So, when they had their issues and Lola pleaded with me to keep her bag, I obliged her. I saw no reason to refuse her since she only kept her luggage and went to her friend’s place to stay. Three days later, Lola came and picked some of her things. It was then Maryam saw her and started making trouble.
“She started insulting me and calling me names. I didn’t answer her because I was just coming back from work and I was tired. I entered the house and locked the door. Around 11pm, Maryam started again. By this time, two of my brothers, Tobi and Tolu were at home. She was hitting our door and calling me bastard.
“Tobi went out and asked her to stop hitting the door and to stop the insult but she pushed him. Then, every other occupant of the compound came out, including Mrs. Labisi and told her she was looking for trouble but she didn’t listen. She kept pushing Tobi and insulting our mother.
“At that point, Tobi dragged her from the door and pushed her away. The landlady held Tobi and took him out of the place. We were all outside when one of our neighbours shouted that Maryam has stabbed herself and that she was running. We didn’t know what was happening and I ran after her.
“Then, we discovered she was going to the police station and we followed her there. But on getting there, we were arrested and detained. She lied that we stabbed her, the police didn’t listen to us. They just locked us up. My father came the next day and paid N25,000 for our bail.
“A day after we were granted bail, police came back to the compound and arrested us again. This time, our landlady’s daughter came to bail us and she was detained too because Maryam said she supported us to stab her. That was how we were charged to court and taken to Kirikiri where we spent over 10 days.”
Arowolo added: “We are tired of the harassment. Let the police investigate and find out who is being truthful. Let the Commissioner investigate the DPO and officers at Itire Police Station. We have suffered enough because of her. She has been bragging that we would return to Kirikiri Prison anytime she wants us to go there. That she would show us that she has power and nothing would happen.”
Mrs Labisi, who claimed that five of her dogs were poisoned and died in quick succession, alleged that Wahab has been making life difficult for her family.
She alleged that Wahab was responsible for her dogs’ death, adding that people overheard her saying: “they haven’t seen anything yet, human beings, not dogs would start dying very soon.”
Mrs Labisi said: “That woman is the only headache we have in this compound. She packed in, in August 2015. Since November, it’s been one trouble or the other. She picks quarrel with everyone and when admonished, she runs to the station to fabricate lies.
“I have had to bail myself or my sister on several occasions from the station. There are times I would go to the station to file a complaint against her but I will be arrested. At a point, one of her friends told our neighbour to tell us to take our matter away from Itire Police Stain because she is friendly with the DPO there.
“The problem of last Wednesday started when I was complaining that our dogs are dying anyhow. One of the dogs was vomiting blood before it died and when we called a veterinarian, he said the dogs were poisoned. So, I was said and lamenting bitterly.
“Then, we heard her saying that dogs are dying now, we are complaining. That human beings will soon start dying. That was a serious comment and I started shouting at her for saying that. I accused her that she was the one who was killing our dogs for saying that and she called me a barren woman.
“I went to the station to give a complaint and I met her there. As I got there, I overheard one of the police women telling her to stop intimidating us and that she should pack out of the compound. But because of her relationship with the DPO, that woman said she was told to detain me.
“I heard later that policemen went to the house to check and they saw that her net was not torn as she claimed, neither was there water in her room. Yet I was detained. I got to the station around 12pm and was there till about 8pm before I was released to go home.
“Before that time, the police collected N5,000 from my sister for my bail and told my sister to go and bring money for her own bail because the complainant claimed she also attacked her. They now collected my sister’s phone and told her to bring money to bail the phone.
“But when the DPO’s boss intervened in the matter, he returned the money and phone and asked them to release us. That was how we were released and since then, the police have not come to arrest us again. It has not been easy. We leave in our home in fear.”
Kalejaiye denied any rape attempt on her, saying Arowolo only assisted her to keep her luggage.
Wahab insisted that she was assaulted, claiming that Mrs Labisi and the men always called her prostitute, despite being married.
She said: “They are lying. How could I have stabbed myself? It was Tolu who stabbed me and they all saw it. Mrs. Labisi now told them to go to the station and say that I stabbed myself. All the things they have been accusing me of are lies. They even said I am the DPO’s lover, which is untrue too.
“They accused me that I was the one who killed their dog. What evidence do they have? So many things have been happening in the compound. I even fear for my life staying there. I am tired of the troubles there but I know that God is watching. Lola is the reason for all these problems.” -

DPO assaults female traffic warden
A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ikenne, Ogun State, Patrick Onwu, yesterday assaulted a female traffic warden, beating her for daring to stop his private vehicle.
Inspector Anifat Bello was directing traffic at the chaotic Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Mega Station junction, Abeokuta, when the DPO who pulled up few meters away from the junction, walked up and assaulted her.
The Nation gathered that the woman had stopped the DPO who was coming from the direction of Sagamu to allow others to pass but Onwu allegedly ignored her and drove past, unmindful of the risk to other road users.
The traffic warden was said to have banged on the DPO’s vehicle as he drove past to register displeasure over his unruly behaviour but this, it was gathered, did not sit well with him.
Onwu, who was said to be dressed in mufti at the time he allegedly flouted the rule, quickly detoured and drove into a nearby filling station, parked and changed into his uniform.
He, thereafter, went to Mrs. Bello and assaulted her until scandalised passers-by rescued her but not without leaving her with a swollen face and bloody eyes.
Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi told reporters that the Commissioner of Police, AbdulMajid Ali, was saddened by the incident and had also directed that the matter be investigated.
“Mrs. Bello has reported the matter to the Commissioner of Police (CP) and he has directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated. The CP was not happy when the woman came with a swollen face.
“If the allegation is true, I am very sure the CP will know what to do departmentally.”
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had during the familiarisation visit to Ogun State by the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, recommended Mrs. Bello for promotion in recognition of her commitment to duty.

Suspected gunmen kill DPO, 62 others
Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen yesterday invaded four towns in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State, killing the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Vunokilang Police Station and 62 others.
However, there was a conflicting report last night that the gunmen were suspected Boko Haram insurgents.
The Nation learnt that more than 200 suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked four towns, namely Demsare, Wunamokoh, Dikajam and Taboungo and parts of Fawore at dawn, killing people.
The DPO, the late CSP Okozie Okereofor, who had just spent two months in the command, was transferred from Okigwe in Imo State.
An eyewitness said he was ambushed with his team, who moved into the communities to quell crises.
A community leader, P.P. Elisha, said Okozie led his men to the areas and suspected Fulani herdsmen surrounded his vehicle and killed him.
The bodies of the police officer and others have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.
Confirming the killings, police spokesman Othman Abubakar said the DPO and his men were attacked on official duty by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
He added that reports indicated that the attackers looted the villagers’ foodstuff and livestock before setting their homes ablaze.

DPO gets 10 years for killing subsidy protester
Justice Olabisi Akinlade of a Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere yesterday sentenced a former Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Segun Fabunmi, to 10 years in prison for manslaughter.
This followed the fatal shooting of Ademola Ade (or Ademola Aderintola Daramola) in the January 9, 2012, Lagos fuel subsidy protest.
Justice Akinlade also found Fabunmi, a dismissed chief superintendent of police (CSP), guilty of shooting and injuring three others; Alimi Abubakar, Egbujor Samuel and Chizorba Odoh.
She sentenced him to five years on this count, but both sentences are to run concurrently.
Fabunmi, of 12 Oyewole Street, Ogudu, Lagos, who joined the police in 1984, was arraigned on May 5, 2013, by Lagos State on a seven-count of murder, attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.
At the time of the incident, the defendant was the DPO of Pen Cinema Police Station, Agege.
He led his men to Yaya-Abatan in Ogba, following reports that there was a disturbance and hoodlums were holding people hostage.
The ex-DPO testified that when he got there, the hoodlums threw bottles, sticks, cutlasses, stones at him and his seven colleagues.
Fabunmi said during the attack by the mob, his rifle, containing 60 bullets, went off.
But he denied shooting the deceased or anyone else.
The court agreed with the defendant that there was a mob but concluded that his testimonies on whether or how an attempt was made to snatch his AK47 and who fired the weapon were conflicting.
The judge rejected defence argument that the shooting was the result of an accident as the defendant struggled with the mob to re-possession his rifle.
Relying on the witnesses’ testimonies and evidence, Justice Akinlade said: “The only conclusion that can be drawn is that the defendant recklessly shot his rifle and in the process the bullet hit the deceased. He definitely knew that shooting an AK47 can cause grievous bodily harm to anyone the bullet hit.
“The fact that he was on a lawful duty did not mean that he should have shot his gun sporadically.”
The judge held that the prosecutors, Lagos Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mrs. Idowu Alakija and Assistant Director Mrs. Abiola Adeyinka, proved the offence of murder but that the evidence provided by the defence team, led by George Oguntade (SAN), availed the defendant of the defence of provocation, resulting in the lesser charge of manslaughter.
She said: “The defence of provocation will avail the defendant. It is evident that there was no time for his passion to cool before the gun was fired.”
The deceased, a fashion designer, was shot in the thigh and was rejected at a hospital for want of a police report.
The other three had testified that by the time they were taken to Ikeja General Hospital it was too late.
The deceased bled to death before treatment could begin.

DPO laments bad road
The Meiran Divisional Police Officer, Anthony Okonkwo, a Superintendent of Police (SP) has said bad road networks and unavailability of serviceable vehicles are inhibiting his men from effectively discharging their duties in the area.
Okonkwo spoke while receiving the Area M commander J.O Eribo, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
He said: ‘’We have been performing our duties diligently with courage in line with the lay down rules and regulation, but what has been our major problems in the course of discharging our duties are bad roads and vehicles to carryout patrol to combat crime and also to enhance our response to distress calls. We are having three patrol vehicles of which two are serviceable while one is grounded’’.
Okonkwo called for creationa of a police post in Olata Captain Community, Meiran, saying that the distance of the community to Meiran division office is worrisome.
He noted doing this will help reduce the incessant criminality in the community to the barest minimum.

Businesses paralysed as police launch manhunt for killers of DPO in Ibadan
Residents of Adekile, Orita Aperin in the heart of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, now sleep with their eyes wide open––no thanks to the flooding of the community with policemen by the State Police Command in search of the killers of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO)attached to the area. He was shot dead by an unknown gunman last Wednesday. OSEHEYE OKWUOFU reports that businesses in the area have virtually grinded to a halt.
Oyo state Police Command was thrown into mourning Wednesday, last week when one of its finest officers, a Chief Superintendent of Police was shot dead by an unknown gunman at Adekile, Orita Aperin, in Ibadan North East Local Government Area of the state during a mass protest by residents over the activities of an alleged kidnapper believed to be operating from the area.
Since the incident which led to the death of the CSP (Ike Nworgu), who was the Divisional Police Officer attached to the Agugu Police Station (covering the area), residents of Adekile, especially the males, have been living in fear as the police intensify efforts to apprehend the killer(s). Security has been beefed up in and around the area as more policemen have been deployed there by the command. Business and other commercial activities have almost been grounded due to the presence of the policemen in the area.
Many residents have fled the area to other parts of the city, leaving the once bubbling community deserted. There was panic in the air, with the few people left behind consciously looking for places to hide away from the prying eyes of policemen.
Particularly hit hard by the presence of the policemen are male residents who are being targeted by the security men with the hope that they may hold the clue to where the culprits may be found. Only the females were allowed unfettered access but not without scrutiny. And for the male, he must possess valuable evidence to prove his innocence.
At a point toward Elekuro area, when The Nation visited the area, everybody was asked to put their hands up while passing through police check. Many suspects, including the principal suspect have been arrested, according to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Adekunle Ajisebutu. He however, refused to disclose the identity of the principal suspect in order not to hamper ongoing investigation.
In what looks like a declaration of dusk to dawn curfew, the entire community was quiet and deserted when The Nation visited during the Easter holidays as there were little or no economic activities in the area.
Social life has also been affected as most of the residents stayed indoors during the Easter festivities as they could not afford to go out to celebrate as usual during such occasions due to the pervading insecurity in the area..
The incident that led to the killing of the DPO began last Wednesday evening when a group of miscreants, led by some armed members of a local vigilante group, inciting other members of the community, vandalised a house in the area on suspicion that kidnapped victims were kept there by the house owner.
Before the incident occurred, some law abiding residents, it was learnt had alerted the police when the rumoured kidnapper’s den became more pronounced in the community, especially after it was discovered that three wells were dug in the premises.
Tension however rose after the police, who stormed the house acting on the information, left with the owner without any substantial discovery. This infuriated the residents who believed the police did not carry out a thorough search of the house. They thereafter took the law into their hands.
According to one of the residents who simply gave his name as Baba Jamiu said, “The police were called to a property in Adekile area after residents alleged that the owner dug three wells in the premises which they found suspicious. However, the police did not find anything but they left with the owner. The residents then had the belief that the police were protecting the owner. They rained stones on the police and injured one of them. They also descended on the house damaging the property with rocks.”
The rampaging hoodlums, later went for the life of the house owner, but could not apprehend him.
The building, after a futile search for ‘kidnapped victims’ and other occupants, was vandalized and razed down along with two other houses.
Investigation revealed that the trigger happy miscreant who opened fire on the police officer belonged to a vigilante group in the area under the umbrella of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) which claimed to be providing security in the area.
“That is the only problem we have been having in this area. They call themselves different names, but we know they are OPC members and the community most times engage them as vigilante. Instead of doing the work of a true vigilante, they will be moving from one place to the other causing trouble and smoking Indian hemp and drinking paraga (local herbal mixture prepared with hot drinks)). They are the ones that caused this trouble, first by peddling an unfounded rumour about kidnappers’ den, and then killing an innocent and gentle police officer . Now, they are not the only ones suffering but the entire community because since the incident happened, every activity has been paralysed. Many have abandoned their houses and fled to evade police arrest. We pray that all those responsible will pay dearly for their sins”, Mr Ayodele Gbadamosi, a retired civil servant who lives in the area told The Nation.
The state police Commissioner, Mr Katsina Mohammed, visibly disturbed by the incident has vowed to ensure that all those involved in the killing of the CSP would face the full wrath of the law.
Shortly after the disturbance, the Police commissioner together with the state governor Abiola Ajimobi visited the scene of the crime.
According to the police boss, the slain police officer had gone to Adekile in response to a distress call by one of the residents who alleged that her baby was kidnapped and kept inside a particular building in the area.
He said the DPO had visited the area and inspected the building in question but could not find anything related to the lodged complaint, but while he was explaining to the youths in the area to remain calm as further investigation would be carried out, the DPO was attacked and shot in the head.
Mr. Katsina explained that the DPO, being a gallant officer before he fell to the miscreants’ bullets, also managed to fire at his attacker who also died on the way to the hospital.
He thereafter reiterated the commitment of the police force to ensure that all culprits in the DPO attack were arrested to face the wrath of the Law.
The entire Adekile, Orita Aperin and Elekuro areas are still under a close watch of armed police men while no fewer than 21 suspects were said to have been arrested.
The state governor Abiola Ajimobi, while speaking on the incident harped on the need for peace and security for meaningful development to take place.
He also appealed to the people of the state to avoid violence in all its ramifications as no development can take place in an atmosphere of violence.
The governor pledged his support to the police force to ensure that the perpetrators of the devilish act are brought to book.
Effort to reach the wife of the slain DPO was not successful as she was yet to arrive the country from the United States of America where she resides with his children.

Manhunt for DPO‘s killers intensifies
•Community still deserted
Many residents of Adekile in Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State spent the Easter break away from home in fear of police arrest.
This followed the killing of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) last Wednesday by some miscreants on the suspicion that the police were covering up an alleged kidnappers’ den in the area.
The said senior police officer was attached to the Agugu police station.
There was heavy police presence in the area yesterday. Motorists were subjected to security checks.
Christians, it was learnt, had been warned to stay away by their pastors.
Most residents put up with relatives where they celebrated Easter.
“We are peace loving people here in this community until now that bastards took over the community.
“On many occasions, we invited security operatives to beam their searchlight on some of their hideouts because we believe in cooperation with the police.
“The slain DPO was a very nice man, very gentle and dutiful and on many occasions he had advised us on how to continue to be security conscious. I know all those responsible for his murder will not go unpunished,” a resident, Pa Rafiu Adekola, said.
Miscreants vandalised a house in the area on suspicion that kidnap victims were kept there.
It was learnt that residents alerted the police after discovering three wells in a building. Tension rose after the police did not make any discovery.
Police spokesperson Adekunle Ajisebutu said the policemen in the area were searching for the killers.

Why crime rate is high, by DPO
why is crime still on the rise despite security agencies’ efforts to stem the malaise? It is because of the country’s weak infrastructure network, a divisional police officer (DPO) has said.
The DPO, who pleaded not to be named, said the Federal Government must be ready to deploy computer supported data system to detect of crime and arrest perpetrators adding that nothing could be done with the current obsolete and outmoded system of investigation.
“The police lack requisite data base for criminals; the establishment of dependable and accessible data base for residents anywhere in the country, specifically for whoever perpetrated any crime is essential to stem the development. The data base, which must contain the fingerprints of the individuals, is a simple way of exposing and arresting perpetrators of crimes, because no two fingerprints of individuals are the same anywhere in the world,” he said.
The simple process of identifying fingerprints, he said, could stem the rise in crime.
He stated: “Because of the absence of a data base, the experience has been that a criminal caught in Oyo State will serve out his term in that state and, upon being released by whatever means, would shift base to any other state and continue his (criminal) runs.
“Even within a state, a person is being caught for the same crime over and over again. Why will a recidivist or a jail bird secure such easy passages? It is because of inadequate data base with which to nail him.
“The reality today is that the same old criminals are being turned over across the courts in the country for similar offences and they are constantly getting away with it. This is a blame on us (the police), the court system and ultimately on the government which has not armed the system with a full-proof process of dependable data base”.
In advanced countries, the DPO said, no police officer would stop your vehicle demanding particulars.
“Once they suspect anything on sighting your vehicle, they note the registration number and they feed such into the data base. Every information about the vehicle and the owner will come out and they will track such vehicle in no time if necessary,” he said.
