  • Why Delta is economically backward – Guber aspirant

    The Governorship Candidate of the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), Delta State, Mr Richard Kimeku, has said that Delta State is economically backward because it lacks good leaders.

    He said it was high time Deltans tried new hands that may have better ideas to transform the state.

    Mr Kimeku, who made the observations at a press conference to unveil his policies and programmes at Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, said the state had not made the desired breakthrough in the present competitive global village because it has no worthy commodities to market to the world.

    He said his administration will be centered on capacity building of the people across board to make their output competitively relevant at both local and international market.

    While calling on Deltans not to rely on lies and continued underdevelopment occasioned by the ruling parties at both national and state levels, Kimeku said he plans to enthrone zero tolerance for corruption.

    He said if elected governor of Delta State come March 2nd, 2019, he would deploy the state resources to training and retraining of the people of the state to empower them with information, knowledge and modern technics in line with their areas of specialization.

    He added that farmers, who constitute major population of the state, would be exposed to mechanized farming, improved seedlings and other aspect of farming in line with global best practices.

    He said his decision to run for the office of governor was born out of a divine project that will recover the state and place it on the pedestal it ought to be in terms of infrastructural and economic development.

    He noted that his leadership will develop the people to acquire requisite skills that will enable them harness available resources in local and international environment.

    The DPP governorship candidate and former Director with Federal Inland Revenue Service, said it does not take rocket science to engender development, stressing that the only thing needed was the will power to enforce rules and make sure that competent and qualified man power and contractors were engaged to deliver on assignments given to them.

    He said if elected as the governor of the state there will be no room for kickbacks in his administration.

    He further disclosed that training of teachers and artisans will also be a priority while online teaching and learning will be introduced in schools to make student survive in the global competitive markets as the world was presently driven by knowledge based economy.

    Mr Kimeku added that he will establish a training institute to nurture and promote talents and skills while graduates will also be trained to make them employable.

    The DPP governorship candidate who described corruption as a crime of opportunity carried out by those who are not too certain of tomorrow, frowned at the high level of corruption in the country, adding that if elected he will run a corrupt free administration where merit will reign over mediocrity.

    He said fighting corruption will be by all as the era of kickbacks and using cronies will be over, adding that there will be a market intelligence data base where all contracts awarded and the amount will be published for all to see.

    He said the private sector will be brought to build fishing companies along the coastal communities in Delta State to help tap into the abundant but yet to be tapped potentials that comes with being blessed with water.

  • Court remands pastor for defiling two boys

    A 28-year-old pastor, Seyi Adelana, who allegedly defiled two boys was on Thursday remanded at Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    When the case was called up, the magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi refused to take the plea of the accused.

    She ordered that the accused be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Adelana, who resides at Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, Lagos, is being tried for defilement.

    The accused committed the offence between June and November 2018, at his residence, the prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde told the court.

    Ayorinde said that the accused unlawfully assaulted the boys, both 17 years old, by defiling them through their anus.

    He said that the accused was exposed when one of the boys was declared missing for four days.

    “During investigation, the boy, who was found with the accused, told his parents what the accused had been doing with him and his friend.

    “The parent reported the case to the police and the accused who has separated from his wife was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    Ayorinde said the offence violated the provisions of Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.

    The case was adjourned until Feb.27 for mention.

  • Man in court for alleged murder

    A 20-year-old man, Basit Yusuf, was on Wednesday arraigned at a Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti for allegedly killing Saliu Jamiu.

    Yusuf, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The police prosecutor, Insp. Monica Ikebuilo, told the court that the accused committed the offence in Ado-Ekiti on Nov. 7.

    She alleged that the accused had earlier threatened to kill Jamiu if he failed to procure a motorcycle for him.

    Ikebuilo said that some days after the threat, the body of the deceased was found in a canal in the Odo-Ado neighbourhood of Ado-Ekiti.

    “The accused was later then apprehended by the police when he tried to escape,’’ she said.

    She said that the offences contravened Section 324 and 319 (1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor then urged the Court to remand the accused in prison custody, pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The plea of the accused was not taken.

    In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Omolola Akosile, ordered that the accused should be remanded in prison and adjourned the case until Dec.13 for mention.

  • Court remands 29-year-old in prison over alleged robbery

    A Chief Magistrate court sitting in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital has ordered the remand in prison custody of a 29 year old man, Lazarus Evans over alleged robbery.

    He allegedly robbed on gunpoint one Sunny Dike of his brand new phones, IPad and cash valued at N487, 000.

    He was charged with two count charge which bothering on robbery and illegal possession of firearm.  The charges were not read out to him hence he was not given the opportunity to take plea.

    In the court document obtained from the court,  the items allegedly stolen by the accused person are:  Microsoft Lumia 535 phone, IPad 4, 64 GB, Tecno Pop phone, Infinix hot 5 phone, Nokia 5300 phone and cash of N250,000.

    The accused person reportedly committed the crime  at Eliozu axis of Obio/Akpor LGA of the state on July 19, 2018.

    Evans has no legal representation in the sitting.

    The court prosecutor,  Wilson Isaiah,  a Police Inspector told the court that Evans committed offence contrary to  sections 6 (b) and section 1, 2 (a) (b) of the robbery and firearms (special provisions) ACT Cap RII, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

    The presiding Magistrate, Sokari Andrew-Jaja ordered that the case file be forwarded to the court’s registrar and to the Director of public prosecution (DPP) for advice and ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison custody as he adjourned the case till October 25, for report of DPP’s advice.

  • Murder of commissioner in Ekiti : Two remanded in prison

    Two men, Tajudeen Bello and Luck Solomon who allegedly murdered Mr Bunmi Ojo, Commissioner in the Federal Character Commission, were on Monday in Ado Ekiti remanded in prison on the orders of an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused — Bello, 22, and Solomon, 32 — are facing a two-count charge of murder and membership of a cult.

    While arraigning the accused, Police Prosecutor Johnson Okunade told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 14 in the state capital.

    According to him, the duo conspired and murdered the politician, a personal assistant to a former governor of Ekiti, Mr Segun Oni.

    The prosecutor alleged that the accused were members of a secret society — Black Axe confraternity.

    The offences contravened Section 319 of Criminal Code and Section 4 (1) of the Secret Cults Abolition and Prohibition of Laws of Ekiti 2012.

    Okunade asked the court to remand the accused in prison pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Mr Chris Omokhafe, counsel to the accused, applied for bail for them but was refused by the court.

    In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye remanded of the duo in prison and adjourned the case until Sept. 19 for the DPP’s advice.

  • Court dismisses murder charge against nine PDP members

    An Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday dismissed a murder charge preferred against nine members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos.

    Chief Magistrate Alex Komolafe freed them following advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), exonerating them of the killing of Apapa Local Government Area PDP Chairman, Adeniyi Aborishade, on July 21.

    The men are: Rotimi Kujore, 44; Fatai Adele, 62; Ismaila Abiola, 50; Amos Fawole, 65; Victoria Falowo, 42; Mukaila Odukoya, 54; Isaac Oropo, 55; Muhammed Babangida, 37; and Ugochukwu Nwoke, 50.

    The magistrate, however, refused to discharge Kehinde Fasasi, 61, the 10th defendant but granted him bail in the sum N400,000.

    They were arraigned by the police on July 25 alongside Moshood Salvador, chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the PDP for alleged conspiracy and unlawful killing.

    The magistrate remanded them in Kirikiri Prison following their not guilty plea and adjourned for the DPP’s advice.

    But Salvador, through his counsel Mr Lawal Pedro (SAN), challenged his remand and sought a dismissal of the charge, among others, at the high court.

    When the matter, came up before Justice Obafemi Adamson of the Ikeja High Court on August 14, an Assistant Director of Public Prosecution, Mr Olaitan Soetan, said there was a “development” regarding Salvador’s prayers.

    The judge’s attention was drawn to the DPP’s report to the lower court recommending the defendants’ discharge for want of evidence.

    The report, endorsed by Lagos State Attorney-General, Mr Adeniji Kazeem, advised the police to release the suspects and intensify the hunt for the actual killers.

    It, however, advised the police to charge Fasasi with disorderly conduct contrary to Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State for causing the fracas that led to the incident

    Pedro affirmed the new state of affairs and told the court that “the matter has been overtaken by circumstances.”

    He urged the court to dismiss the charge.

    Ruling, Justice Adamson freed the defendants based on the DPP’s advice.

    On August 16, a Lagos High Court in Igbosere adjourned till August 23 to hear five more PDP members’ bail application following their remand for Aborishade’s alleged murder.

  • Men docked over robbery of N2m Rolex watch with toy gun

    An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded five unemployed men in Kirikiri Prisons for allegedly robbing a man of a Rolex wrist watch valued at N2 million with a toy gun.

    The accused are Ayodele Oluwafemi, 36; Imole Otegbeye, 22; Segun Sunday, 24; Rilwan Abdusalam, 22; and Ezekiel Ayodele, 22.

    The men, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a three-count charge bordering on robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. A. Adetunji, who gave the ruling, said the accused should be kept in Kirikiri Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    She directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the DPP.

    The prosecution had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 3 at 10.00 p. m. along Oshodi Airport Road, Lagos.

    The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Matthew Akhaluode alleged the accused, with others still at large, armed themselves with a black toy gun and robbed the complainant, Mr Adamson Mustapha of his Rolex watch valued at N2 million in his car.

    “The complainant was on his way from the airport when the accused attacked him with a toy gun and robbed him of his N2 million Rolex watch.

    “The complainant alerted passersby and the accused were caught, realising that the gun was not real, ” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 297(2), 299(1) and 330 (a), (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Reports have it that Section 297 (2) prescribes 21 years jail term for offenders.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until July 2 DPP’s advice.

  • DPP holds primary May 10

    The National Chairman of the Democratic Peoples’ Party (DPP), Mr Garshon Benson, said the party would hold its primary for the Ekiti governorship election on May 10 .

    Benson told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the party was seriously preparing for the primary and that it would be credible.

    He said the DPP would ensure that a formidable candidate emerges as its flag bearer for the July 14 governorship poll.

    He said that three aspirants had already indicated interest to contest for the governorship seat under the party.

    He said: “We are confident that INEC will do a good job by creating enabling environment and a level-playing ground for all political parties and their candidates to participate in the poll.

    “We believe we are going to give a proper account of ourselves in Ekiti when the time comes.

    “All the three aspirants that have declared their intension so far are popular and they are sons of the state.

    “It is the delegates that will decide who will be the party’s flag bearer.”

    Benson, however, advised those that are yet to register in the ongoing nationwide continuous voter registration to do so.

    He added: “We encourage anybody that is 18 years and above that had not registered to go and register and get his or her PVC.

    “It is with your PVCs that you can determine the fate of any government. You can vote in or vote out any government.”

    The Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) yesterday accused Olukoya Ogungbeje, counsel to suspected billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike aka Evans, of attempting to frustrate the trial.

    The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Ms Titilayo Shitta-Bey, made the accusation while responding to Ogungbeje’s application seeking to quash the charges against Evans.

    Evans with three others are facing seven counts of conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, kidnapping, murder and attempted murder contrary to Section 411 Criminal Law Cap C 17, Vol 13, Section 271 (3) and Section 230 (A) Cap C17, of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The second to fourth defendants are Joseph Ikenna Emeka, Chiemeka Arinze and Udeme Frank Upong.

    “The fresh application filed by the 1st defendant’s counsel contains the same elements as the former application, which the court had ruled on. This fresh application is just a ploy to derail and frustrate the trial,” Shitta-Bey said.

    Ogungbeje, however, responded: “No my Lord, the prosecution is the one delaying its case. The prosecution knows what we want. They have filed multiple charges, and even one of the charges they filed does not have proof of evidence.”

    He expressed displeasure at the issues raised by the prosecutor, accusing him of trying to stall the trial.

    Ogungbeje said the basis of his applications is on the procedure applied by the prosecution in filing the charges against his client.

    At this juncture, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo asked Ogungbeje what he wanted, remarking that one day, trial would begin in the matter.

    “I know that one day we will hear this case,” the judge said before adjourning the matter till March 21 in order to enable the prosecution file a fresh charge.
