  • Ikpeazu, Otti’s face-off heats up Abia campaigns

As Abia State prepares for the general elections, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, who visited the state during the week, reports that the conflict between Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of PDP and the governorship candidate of APGA, Dr. Alex Otti, is heating up the polity

The suppressed tension and hostility that have trailed election campaigns in the state became concretised during the week when a debate for the governorship candidates of some political parties in Abia State ended in chaos, even as sporadic gunshots at the Abia Hotels, Umuahia, venue of the event, created confusion and fear.

As the guests at the event ran to different directions for their lives, it was alleged that the gunshots and teargas canisters were actually fired by security aides to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, the governorship candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Dr. Alex Otti, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who were participants in the debate.

The Nation gathered that the trouble actually started inside the conference room where Ikpeazu and Otti exchanged hot banters while answering questions during the debate. At a point, the debate was almost brought to a halt as supporters of the governor cut the proceeding to a halt for over 10 minutes, alleging marginalisation of their principal.

It all began when one of the moderators tried to stop Ikpeazu, saying he had exhausted the time allotted to him to answer a particular question.  The governor, visibly embarrassed, openly protested. At this point, as would be expected, his aides and supporters who accompanied him to the debate took over the floor by force in order to defend him. This led to a disagreeable and rancorous atmosphere, a development that paved the way for the sporadic shooting after the debate.

Although the governorship candidates’ debate, organised by some media groups and entitled “2019 Abia Governorship Debate, was not only between Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of PDP and Dr. Alex Otti of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), The Nation reports that it turned out as a straight confrontation between Otti and Ikpeazu, who literally quizzed one another. Other participants however included Hon. Blessing Nwagba of SDP and Accord Party’s Barr. Emeka Uwakolam.

Judging from their utterances and disposition throughout the debate, it would not be wrong to say that each of them came to the event prepared to tackle the other.

But according to the Director, Media and Publicity of Alex Otti Campaign Organisation, Kazie Uko, “they tried to stop the debate just because Dr. Otti looked at Governor Ikpeazu in the eyes and told him unequivocally that he (the governor) was sitting on a stolen mandate. That was all he said as he opened his remarks on why he wanted to be governor of Abia State. Note also that at that point, Ikpeazu did not controvert the allegation.”

Tempers also rose when the APGA candidate also reminded the governor of “his promise not to seek reelection, if he did not complete all projects started by his government,” and wondered “if he was going to keep to his word now that it was certain that the Osisioma Bridge, which the governor had showcased as his landmark project, had become abandoned.”

Responding Ikpeazu said, “Well, I’m going to run for re-election because the money I was supposed to use to complete the Osisioma Bridge, I have used it to complete the Okobo Bridge, on the Abam-Arochukwu Road. At least, I have completed that one bridge, the only thing that is left is to do the road”, Ikpeazu responded to the amusement of some in the audience. The governor also took two other punches at Otti: One, on Abia Charter of Equity and second on Otti’s time as Chief Executive Officer at Diamond Bank.

Reacting, Otti said: “I would have been surprised if after building the road that leads to Akwa Ibom State, from where we know that some people ancestrally hail from, so thank you very much for doing the one going to Arochukwu.

“Now, on the issue of Diamond Bank, there is a transaction that’s going on, so I will not talk much about it. But I will like to remind him that banking business is not like government business, particularly in Abia State. I left banking in 2014, that’s five years ago. I can give an account of what I did in the four years that I stayed in Diamond Bank. Once I left, I left. It’s unlike what we find in some governments where a governor leaves and he doesn’t leave; he continues to manipulate his successor. I do not know what happened in Diamond Bank because I had left. But my records are very clear and they’re there to show”.

On equity, Otti replied: “Equity is important, particularly if you’re coming with clean hands. Abia State is in trouble. Abia is in comatose, so it’s like a man who’s on life support and a doctor shows up and he says he wants to know where the doctor comes from. We need to cure the state. We need to deal with the problems of the state and it goes beyond where somebody comes from ancestrally or where he comes from, by birth. We’re looking for competence, we’re looking for people who are straight, we’re looking for people who have skill, we’re looking for people who have past records of performance and we have seen four years. We are not impressed. ”

Although the discussions at the debate was designed to centre mainly on the state of the Abia economy, security, infrastructure development, youth employment, education and health, among others, guests at the debate venue and majority of Abians that monitored the debate have expressed concern over the combatant disposition of the two candidates at the debate, wondering if it is a signal to what would obtain during the election.

“What transpired at the governorship debate confirmed the political tension in the state ahead the governorship election. It is a development we must all be conscious of as the Election Day draws closer. It shows that the bitterness over the handling and results of 2015 elections in Abia is still very fresh. We pray this year’s elections will be free and fair and violent-free,” Chief Ukandu Iheukwumere from Isuikwuato told The Nation in Umuahia

Like Chief Ukandu, Madam Eunice Chikwe, a woman leader in Aba, said the forthcoming elections “will likely reflect the confrontations in 2015.” She however said “politicians and voters in the state seem more prepared this time to guard their votes and ensure that the collective will of Abians is not suppressed at every level.”

It is a known fact today that Abia is another Southeast state that promises to feature intriguing results in the forthcoming elections.

  • ‘Why I celebrated my birthday with patients’

The 2015 gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr Alex Otti celebrated his birthday paying hospital bills for sick and discharged patients on admission at the Federal Medical Center (FMC). Sunny Nwankwo reports

Apart from traditional/white weddings and burial ceremonies which usually attract friends and well-wishers of the celebrant(s) and affected family(ies), the fanfare and pageantry attached to parties and birthday celebrations, especially when the rich is involved.

But Dr. Alex Otti, the 2015 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), decided to mark his birthday in an unusual place where many especially the rich defiles to visit even when there was the need to do so.

Otti was at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Umuahia,  the Abia State capital, to mark his birthday with the patients on admission and also used the opportunity of the visit to offset bills of some of the patients who were on admission at the hospital and others who were being detained at the hospital for not paying their hospital bills.

Otti and members of his entourage spent more than three hours touring the different wards of the very expansive hospital and identifying with patients suffering from different kinds of ailments, including accident victims whose cases were very pathetic, and their bills very high.

Touched by the plights of the patients, Otti, who was led on the ward visits by Dr Chinwe Okoli informed the team that he would settling the bills of some of the patients which run into millions of naira.

And when the news broke to the patients, the atmosphere was electrified in jubilation as shouts of joy rented the air by both staff of the hospital and visitors to the hospital who could not hide their joy and emotions over the magnanimity shown to the patients by Otti.

Some of the patients, who had their bills amounting to as much as N450,000 and N570,000, especially those already stranded saw their sad stories re-written in a matter of minutes.

Otti explained that he felt that identifying with the sick and the needy was the best way to celebrate his birthday, explaining that he was divinely inspired to do it to give hope to those who had almost lost hope.

He regretted the dilapidation in Abia health facilities which has made it difficult for sick Abians to have access to good health care, except the FMC, insisting that Abia should ordinarily have at least one standard hospital in each of the three senatorial zones of the state for or a start.

Okoli explained that the outpouring of emotions, thanks and prayers by the patients in appreciation and honor of Dr. Otti spoke volumes about the impacts of his rare generosity.

Mrs. Okoli was firm and emphatic to state that FMC had never witnessed such magnitude of generosity before, and prayed God to bless Dr. Otti beyond measure.

Otti was accompanied on the visit by his deputy governorship candidate in the 2015 election, Mrs. Uche Eme Uche, former ICAN President Chief Chidi Ajaegbu and APGA House of Representatives member for Aba North and South, Hon. Ossy Prestige,  among others.

  • Otti urges supporters to obtain voters card

Otti urges supporters to obtain voters card

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the 2015 general election in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti has urged his supporters and members of the party that are yet to obtain their permanent voters card to do so before 2019 polls.

Otti, who stated this at the commissioning of the Abia South Zonal office of Abia First, his political organisation, reminded his supporters that they won’t be able to make any meaningful change in the state and the country if they do not have a permanent voter’s card.

Otti lamented the state of infrastructural decay in the state two years into Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration, saying the state was yet to see true governance. He said providing real governance was the reason he came out to vie for the governorship position in the state in 2015.

The financial expert who lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a credible governorship election on November 18 in Anambra State, predicted that the party in the state would record a similar landslide victory.

He said, ”We recorded 21/21 in Anambra and we will get 17/17 in Abia,” referring to APGA’s sweeping of all the 21 council areas in the election.

Otti said APGA clearly won the governorship election in Abia in 2015, but that the PDP government in the state aided by federal might, re-wrote the result in a place other than the collation centres, thereby denying the party victory.

”I’m sure you know the story and we did something to ensure that what happened in 2015 didn’t happen and that is why they decided to write the results outside the collation centres. We reclaimed that mandate at the Appeal Court, but the Supreme Court reversed it.

”What happened in Anambra on November 18 I’m sure has shown it very clearly to everybody that writing of results cannot stand anymore because if you didn’t get accredited electronically, you cannot vote. That is actually what the issue is and like President Muhammadu Buhari has said, the Anambra example is the minimum standard and I hope that INEC will continue to redeem itself and conduct credible election.”

Speaking further Otti said, “In 2015 when what happened, happened, it seemed like 2019 was far and here it comes. Since then, the incumbent government hasn’t been able to do anything tangible till date. We foresaw what is happening today. The people they used in committing the atrocities which they did as at then; are today regretting it.

The 2015 APGA Abia governorship  candidate opined that good governance was his watch word and remains what the people should be expecting from him in 2019 as he was optimistic his party would come to power then.

”We will win the election and we will change the face of Abia State. I am sure that people do not like how Abia State looks. It took so much time for me to move from Osisioma Junction to get here (Okigwe Road) because of bad road and the rains are not here. Imagine what it could have been if the rains were here.

”So, we have had several years of very poor governance, years of rot, years of lack of progress and I think that we have had enough. It is time for change, positive change so that we can be like others. If you go to Anambra, I am sure that you will know that there is a difference between a state that has government and a state that doesn’t have. Abia State doesn’t have government and that is why you must get your PVC.”

  • Bianca endorses Alex Otti’s candidature

Wife of late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, (former Biafra leader and past leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)), Olivia Bianca, has officially endorsed Dr. Alex Otti as the party’s governorship flag bearer of the party in Abia State.

Bianca’s endorsement of Otti, many sympathisers and supporters of the party in the state said have put to rest the controversy surrounding the emergence of the former Diamond Bank chief as the authentic flag bearer of the party in the state.

Recall that the emergence of Otti as the governorship candidate of the party through parallel APGA primaries has been causing ripples as Otti and Chief Reagan Ufomba have been holding campaigns under the platform of APGA ahead of the April 11 poll putting the supporters of the party in doubt on who the authentic governorship candidate was.

The wife of the former Biafran warlord who made a special appearance during a mega rally held in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state, was warmly welcomed and cheered to the podium by the jubilant crowd and APGA supporters who defied the rain to attend the rally.

The Nigeria’s Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs and current Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain recalled the giant strides of the former Diamond Bank MD, describing Otti as the best candidate for the governorship slot in the state.

  • ‘Otti can change sports in Abia’

Many retired sportsmen and women in Abia State believe Dr. Alex Otti can kick-start real grassroots development if he becomes governor of the state.

According to Onwusogh Amadi Uche, a member of the old Imo State Academicals team of the 1980s, retired sportsmen in the state believe that Otti, who retired as the managing Director of Diamond Bank, has the pedigree to engineer a new era of development in Abia State sports.

Uche, who is one of the managers of his younger siblings,  Kalu and Ikechukwu, who play professional football in Spain, says for a long time Abia State has been clamouring for a governor that knows the genuine needs of its youths.

“The Dr. Otti that I know from Ngwa High School, Aba,  is a meticulous man, who doesn’t do things just because others are into it. I had the opportunity of interacting with him several times when we were in school and each time I listened to him he came across as a young man, who knows how to achieve anything he sets out to do. Now, he has promised to create employment for Abia youths through sports and the arts by providing the enabling environment for the youths to develop their talents.

“Abia is in need of such a leader because this is the only state in the South East with dilapidated sports infrastructure. There is no single tartan track in Abia State, while such other sports like basketball, table tennis, tennis and volleyball have no presence here.

“Even the handball we dominated alongside Imo State in the 1980s has taken flight from our state because successive governments only pay attention to Enyimba and Abia Warriors. These teams alone cannot provide employment for the millions of Abia youths, who cannot play football.”

Uche also believes that if better structured, “Enyimba and Abia Warriors could become avenues for indigenes of the state to make their livelihood through businesses that feed from the popularity of football.

“That is why retired sportsmen in the state want every Abia youth to key into the Dr. Otti project since he has promised to create the atmosphere for genuine sports development.”

Otti assures electorate of free, fair elections

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has assured the electorate that the innovation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would make rigging difficult in next month’s elections.

Speaking with reporters in Isiala-Ngwa North Local Government, he said the innovation introduced by the electoral body would make it difficult for rigging to succeed.

Otti said with the introduction of the biometric card reader by INEC, it would be difficult for anybody to rig, adding that he believed votes would count.

The APGA governorship candidate urged the electorate to vote.

He attributed voter apathy to rigging in the past, stressing that it would be difficult this time.

His words: “Many people were disillusioned by election because of rigging. But this time, votes must count.”

Otti said he had mobilised the electorate to obtain permanent voter cards and vote for him during the election.

The APGA governorship candidate said he would win because the party had a structure and enjoyed support at the grassroots.

He added: “Anybody who loves Abia and detests underdevelopment will vote for me. Many people are not happy with the situation in the state. So, the best thing is to vote for me for that change.”

The former managing director/chief executive officer of Diamond Bank Plc said he joined the governorship race to stop maladministration and develop Abia.

Otti said: “I entered the governorship race not as a politician, but to rescue the people from poverty. I will ensure that the resources of the state are utilised.”

  • APGA governorship candidate promises to rebuild Aba

APGA governorship candidate promises to rebuild Aba

The Abia State governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Alex Otti, has promised to transform the ancient city, if  elected  next year’s general elections.

Otti, who was received by a crowd of supporters, lamented about the sordid state of Aba, which used to be a prime location for industries in the Southeast. Speaking at the popular Ariaria International Market in the city, the APGA flag bearer said the transformation of the city would be one of his priorities, adding that the filthy and horrendous is a slight on the  leadership of the state under Governor Theodore Orji.

Otti had a very healthy interaction with traders during the market tour and the traders were well at home to have a heart-to-heart chat with him and laid before him some of their concerns.

One of the traders, Obinna Innocent, promised to rally his fellow traders to support the APGA candidate. He expressed concern however over  the ability of Otti and his supporters to secure enough votes to win the contest, given the antics of those he referred to as enemies of the state.

Also speaking, another trader, Mrs. Duru, expressed great dismay at the state of the Ariaria market and Aba in general, urging the APGA flag bearer to keep to his promises ‘when’ elected. Duru assured Otti traders in Ariaria believe in him and his master plan for the development of Abia State come next year.

In his response, Otti assured the gathering that he is a firm believer of President Goodluck Jonathan’s ‘one man, one vote’ philosophy and that their votes will be protected, even as they also have a major role to play in this regard.

He advised those that are yet to collect their permanent voters card (PVC) to do so at their various local government headquarters because that is the main tool they need to change Abia for better. He pledged to abolish multiple taxations and provide a conducive environment for business in the state.

Otti wins APGA governorship ticket in Abia

Former Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Diamond Bank Plc Dr. Alex Otti emerged yesterday in Umuahia as the Abia State All Progressives Grand Alliance’s (APGA’s) governorship candidate for the February general election.

Otti, at the primary held at the Lakewood Hotel on Aba Road, Umuahia, the state capital, polled 485 votes from a total of 503 votes cast to defeat his rival, Mr Chikwendu Udensi, who scored 8 votes.

Of a total of 511 delegates accredited for the primaries conducted in a free and fair atmosphere, 503 voted while 10 votes were voided

Addressing party supporters after he was declared winner by the chairman of the APGA Electoral Committee, Otti expressed his appreciation to delegates for conducting themselves in an orderly manner at the primary.

He said: “I must thank God for a very peaceful election and the delegates for their support.  Let me also say that those who didn’t vote for me because I know that as time goes on they will come to understand what we have come to do in APGA. All in all, I am very happy with the result of the primaries.”

In an interview with reporters, the winner gave the alleged deplorable state of Abia as the main reason why he came out for the race.

He added that it was not too late to salvage the situation, adding that it could  have been worse if “people like us did not take the bold step we took, because I believe that I have the capacity, the skills and the network as well as the experience and training to turn the situation in Abia around.’’

“In terms of potentials, I believe that Abia State is blessed because we have the resources, both material and human, creative minds and entrepreneurs. What is required is a little support from government by way of creating the enabling environment; and that is exactly what I have come to do for my state,” he said.

The APGA governorship candidate reiterated his commitment to embark on massive infrastructural turnaround to aid commerce and industry even as he said that healthcare and educational systems would be attended to for the betterment of the citizenry, if he becomes governor.

He emphasised that his administration would ensure that teachers in the state receive proper training to enable them impact qualitative knowledge in school children at various levels.

    Ariaria market coalition backs Otti

Ahead of the general elections, goodwill and endorsements have continued to come the way of Abia State All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship aspirant, Dr. Alex Otti.

A coalition of stakeholders of Ariaria International Market and Ward 9, Aba North Local Government, last week joined other groups to support the first class economist.

This is coming on the heels of a recent merit award to him by members of the National Association of Southeast Students, for his contributions to the development of education.

The Ariaria market group, which paid a solidarity visit to Otti at Umuru in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government last Tuesday, said its decision to endorse him was based on the conviction that he would provide good leadership and address development challenges in Abia State if elected.

The leader of the group, Uche Chukwudi, reminded Otti of his pledge during his official declaration for governorship that he would create the  Ministry of Aba Affairs and develop the city that it would be referred to as the “Japan of Africa”.

The APGA governorship aspirant assured the group of his commitment to transform Aba into a modern city and an economic hub. He also promised to develop Abia State.

  • Abia 2015: Professionals drum up support for Otti

Abia 2015: Professionals drum up support for Otti

SOME professionals from Abia State have vowed to drum up support for Dr. Alex Otti, who on Friday, October 24, 2014, voluntarily resigned his appointment as the Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc to pursue his 2015 governorship ambition in Abia State.

Describing the banker as “a fresh breadth in the politics of Abia State,” some of the professionals, who spoke to The Nation yesterday, said Otti represents the quality of leaders needed to rescue the state.

Coalition of Abia Professionals for Good Governance for example, said yesterday that “the news of the resignation of Alex Otti from his plum job at Diamond Bank Plc yesterday (Friday) to join the struggle to rescue Abia State was indeed heartwarming to Abians in particular and the generality of Ndi Igbo that appreciate the pride of place Aba occupies as a commercial hub of West Africa before the rot set in.”

President of the coalition, Dr. Sony Ajala, a lawyer, told The Nation that “Otti, a consummate investment banker, has the moral compass, strength of character, integrity, mental stamina, intellectual sophistication, illuminated vision and the reach nationwide to place Aba State on the path of fast track recovery if he’s elected the Chief Executive of Abia State in 2015.”

He added, “For us at the Coalition of Abia Professionals for Good Governance, we shall mobilise Abians across party affiliations to drum up support for aspiration of Dr. Otti.

“Our coalition will from Monday (27/10/2014) commence the collection of signatures from all persons of goodwill of Abia extraction across the globe to persuade other aspirants to the governorship seat of Abia State to step down for Dr. Otti who in sincere assessment represents a fresh breath.”

In a chat in Lagos with some media executives on Friday, few hours after his resignation as GMD of Diamond Bank Plc, Otti spoke passionately about the strategic importance of Aba to the economy of the state, South-East zone and Nigeria, promising that if voted into power, “we will run Abia as a business.”
