    FG renew commitment to end Obstetric Fistula

    Federal Government has renewed its commitment to end obstetric fistula in the country.

    Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole made this known while launching the guideline on Urethral Catherisation for prevention and managing of Obstetric Fistula in Nigeria.

    The launch was part of the sixth International Conference of International Society on Obstetric Fistula Surgeon (ISOFS) in Abuja.

    The Minister while evaluating the surgical exercise held at Federal Medical Centre Jabi, Abuja in collaboration with the society urged the International Obstetric Fistula Centre Working Group to work with the Federal Ministry of Health not only to repair fistula patients but also to find lasting solution to the problem.

    The Minister said, “It is not enough to keep on repairing, we must close the tap, by closing the tap, I mean we should do everything possible to stop all new cases of obstetric fistula in Nigeria”.

    According to the Minister since it is part of the Federal Government’s contributions to repair all fistula cases, the ministry had established three hospitals dedicated for fistula repair in the country namely: Abalaki, Ebony State, Baba Ruga, Katsina State, and Ningi in Bauchi State, adding that the government intend to establish three more in the year 2017.

    Adewole said, “We need to tackle the root causes by addressing education and poverty: when a woman is educated, she would understand what it means to have a child, understand what it mean to seek for medical care when things are not going well”.

    The Minister reaffirmed that the Federal Government of Nigeria was committed to put in place reasonable resources in the current budget to address social welfare problem that would lift people out of poverty.

    He said when people are educated and have resources, they could live well, eat well, and they would really attend issues affecting not only their health but general wellbeing.

    Deputy Representative, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Nigeria Country Office Eugene Kongnyuy, said experts should think differently from the normal routine. He called for robust campaign against early marriage and harmful traditional practices like female genital mutilation which he considered the main cause of Obstetric Fistula.

    The wife of the Niger State Governor,  Dr Amina Abubakar Bello said her project Raise Foundation was working toward improving the lives of women and children including  creating awareness and repair of fistula patients in Niger State adding that the foundation was willing to partner with the Federal Government in the quest to end obstetric fistula.

    Buhari’s wife Donates Food Items to less privileged in Niger state

    In a bid to cushion the effects of the current economic situation in the country, the President’s Wife, Mrs. Aisha Buhari has donated food items to be distributed to the less privileged, people living with disability, widows and the vulnerable in Niger state.

    The items was distributed by the Wife of the Governor of Niger state, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello.

    She said that the food items were donated by the Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari to alleviate the suffering and make life easy for the less privileged.

    Food items for distribution include 1000 bags of rice, 1000 gallons of vegetable oil, 1000 cartons of tomato paste, 1000 cartons of specially packaged garri and 1000 cartons of custard and will be distributed among the 25 local government areas in the state.

    The Governor’s Wife appreciated the Wife of the President for picking interest in the condition of the less privileged, widows and the physically challenged individuals in the state adding that this gesture will go a long way in helping the beneficiaries.

    “This donation is made in the spirit of the Ramadan Fast as the President’s Wife contributes her quota towards alleviating the suffering of the less privileged. This particular gesture is a display of the special affection of Mrs. Buhari for the ordinary Nigerlites and we are grateful”, Bello stated.

    She then appealed to the people to support the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration especially in his fight against corruption, job creation and youth empowerment.

    “It is true that although you might be going through some form of hardship right now, we need to preserve a little more because if we exercise patience with the government, very soon, we will all see the dividends of the change that we have been anticipating because sustainable change is truly a gradual process.”

  • Mutilated Genitals: Governor’s Wife Seeks Justice for baby Dauda

    The Wife of the Governor of Niger State, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello has described the cutting off of the genital of four months ‎old baby, Buhari Dauda by his stepmother as a horrendous act and the height of wickedness.

    ‎Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello condemned the stepmother’s action in a statement signed by her Press Secretary, Aisha Wakaso said it was heartbreaking to see an innocent boy go through such a near death experience.

    Expressing joy that the boy was still alive, Bello assured that everything would be done to bring the perpetrator of the dastardly act to justice adding that all machinery to ensure the boy receives the best medical attention has been put in place.

    The wife of the Governor then appealed to members of the public to always exercise restraint ‎when they are angry, so that innocent children or even adults do not become unfortunate victims of unwarranted violence.

  • Niger governor’s wife links social vices to drug abuse

    The Wife of Niger State Governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello, has attributed the increasing rate of social vices and insurgency to drug abuse and addiction among youths.

    She said studies have shown that most criminals were in the habit of taking hard drugs each time they were about to engage in their so called operations.

    Bello made this observation after breaking fast with inmates of the Niger State Social Rehabilitation Centre in Minna, the state capital.

    She said war against crime and insurgency should start from homes with family members showing love to one another and ensure that the family bond is maintained.

    The governor’s wife also called for love and understanding for people that had been rehabilitated after drug abuse, to discourage them from returning to drug usage.

    “I appeal to all of you to show love to addicts who have been rehabilitated when they return to the society. This gives them a sense of belonging and enable them to feel free and not return to drugs,” she said.
