  • Oyo targets 1.5m children for Vitamin A supplement

    The Oyo State Government says  it is  targeting 1.5 million  children who are under  five years  as beneficiaries of  Vitamin A supplement during the forthcoming Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Week.

    The state Commissioner for Health,  Dr Azeez Adeduntan, made the disclosure on Saturday in Ibadan while giving  an update on the preparation for  the MNCH week

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the MNCH Week holds  between  May 29  and  June 2.

    Adeduntan said  parents of children from six months to 59months were expected to bring their wards to the health facilities and outreach centres provided by the government for the exercise.

    He said that Vitamin A was essential for the targeted children in order to boost their immune system, improve their sight as well as prevent measles and other related skin diseases.

    The commissioner said the  week would be held in  1,404 health facilities across the state, adding that  two health centres  and two outreaches were selected  in each of the 351 wards throughout the state.

    “During the MNCH week, pregnant women, nursing mothers and children between 0-59 months will benefit from  free nutrition and health interventions,  including  HIV screening and malnutrition screening.

    “There will also be provision of  family planning commodities, birth registration, deworming tablets for children of 12-59 months as well as provision of malaria drugs for pregnant women,’’ he said.

  • No meningitis in Oyo – Commissioner

    The Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, has dismissed the report of meningitis outbreak in the state.

    The commissioner was reacting to reports in some national dailies on Friday claiming that there is meningitis outbreak in the state.

    Although the commissioner confirmed that they have eight suspected cases already, he said there is no laboratory test evidence to prove it is meningitis.

    “The Ministry wished to affirm that four patients with symptoms of fever and neck stiffness were seen at Akinyele local government area of the state. Two of such were seen at General Hospital, Moniya with another two in private health facilIties.

    “The patience from HAMDALA Hospital was subsequently referred to the University College Hospital, Ibadan. To further strengthen this suspicion of meningitis, two of these cases had recently travelled to the northern part of the country where quite a number of cases had been confirmed,” he said

    Adeduntan, however said blood samples were taken from two cases and laboratory investigation carried out revealed there were no organisms in the cerebrospinal fluids of these patients.

    He implored the general public to uphold the hygienic practices of regular hand washing with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, using toilets, coughing or blowing of the nose.

     

  • No confirmed cases of meningitis outbreak in Oyo – Commissioner

    The Oyo State Commissioner of Health, Dr Azeez Adeduntan has dismissed the rumour of any outbreak of meningitis disease in the state.

    Adeduntan, was reacting to some report in some of the national dailies on Friday said that there is an outbreak of meningitis in the state.

    Although the Commissioner for Health confirmed that they have eight suspected cases already but noted that there is no laboratory test evidence to prove it is meningitis.

    Adeduntan, however said clinical diagnosis of samples were taken from two cases and laboratory investigation carried out revealed that no organisms in the cerebrospinal fluids of these patients.

    He implored the general public to uphold the hygienic practices of regularly hand washing with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, using toilets, coughing or blowing the nose.

    Adeduntan also urged them to avoid touching the face with unwashed hands, and ensure that any individual that is sick should visit the hospital immediately.

    He urged the people of the state to disregard any media report of meningitis outbreak in the state, insisting that nothing of such case has been recorded

     

  • Oyo to immunize 3m Children

    The Oyo State Government says  it is targeting more than 3 million children  in the 2017 National Immunisation Plus Days (NIPDs) against Poliomyelitis and Tetanus Toxoid.

    The state’s  Commissioner for Health, Dr Azeez Adeduntan, told newsmen in Ibadan on Thursday that pregnant women would be immunised against Tetanus Toxoid.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the first round of the NIPDS in the state  is scheduled to hold from March 25 to  March  28.

    Adeduntan disclosed that  more than  1.6million children of zero to 59months were targeted for Oral Polio Vaccination   while  1.7 million women of child-bearing age  would be vaccinated against Tetanus.

    He stated that 4,152 children below one year (zero -11 months) , who had  missed their routine immunisation,  would be vaccinated according to their due antigens.

    Adedutan added that children from ages of zero to five years would be immunised against poliomyelitis while missed routine antigens would be administered on children between 0 – 11 months who missed the routine immunisation scheduled.

    He said  the NIPDs was  a supplemental immunisation campaign   to ensure immunity among  under-five children against poliomyelitis.

    Adeduntan said that it was also aimed at vaccinating unimmunised under-one-year-old children against every other vaccine preventable diseases.

    The commissioner gave  an assurance that the  government  would   not relent in its efforts to improve health care delivery in the state
