    Ogun sets up committee on health

    The Ogun State government, in conjunction with Pathfinder International, has inaugurated a 38-man committee on State Strategic Health Development Plan (SSHDP). The move was aimed at reducing maternal, child mortality rate.

    While inaugurating the committee at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the state capital, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye urged members of the committee to be committed in the discharge of their responsibilities.

    He added that the committee has five years to finish the task before them, even as he enjoined them to make the state proud in terms of health care delivery as it was the second cardinal programme of Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration.

    Ipaye said the committee would work assiduously in the next five years in order to fulfill the expectation of the Federal Ministry of Health to have the bottom-top approach to the National Strategic Plan on Health, adding that whatever development adopted in the state would be sent to the Federal Government as part of national health plans.

    “We are modifying the expectation of Federal Government plan in such a way that will have positive impact on our people, not only to fulfil the Federal Government’s template but to also build around our three-tier programmes of primary, secondary and tertiary health services,” Ipaye said.

    He said it was imperative to manage the health care of the people, especially those in the rural communities and to reflect the approach of financing the Community-based Health Insurance Scheme (CBHIS), Araya that permits indigent people to key into the five-year programme.

    The commissioner further said the programme would focus on health care of the people with malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, maternal care, immunisation and others.

    He added that the committee would also provide a template for the state to fortify the over 477 primary health care centres across the state with necessary equipment, manpower and resources to deliver the programme in the various communities. He noted that every federal constituencies of the state would have effective service care centres in order to provide comprehensive service to the people.

    The Country Representative of Pathfinder International, Dr. Farouk Jega advised members of  the committee to deliver their services as and when due and with utmost diligence, dedication and commitment, noting that their outcome would be a template for the Federal Government in planning and designing health care services for the people.

    He said with the vision, mission and preparation of the committee in handling the state’s strategic health development plan, it was believed that they would deliver and make the state proud.

    In his goodwill messages, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Dr. Nofiu Aigoro urged members of the committee to fast-track the implementation of health care services delivery that would be of benefit to the masses. He stated that he has confidence in the committee, even as he promised not to jeopardise the confidence reposed in them.

  • 400 people to enjoy free medical surgery in Ogun

    No fewer than 400 people will benefit from the ongoing free medical surgery of the Ogun Government.

    The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Babatunde Ipaye, made the disclosure on Wednesday while flagging off the programme at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the free medical surgery would cover hernia, glaucoma, breast biopsy, burn excision/debridement and other diseases.

    NAN reports that the programme was jointly organised by Ogun Government in conjunction with the Rotary International District 9110, Nigeria, Rotary International 3020, India and Rotary International 3610, South Korea.

    Ipaye said that the free medical surgery was to give succour to those who could not afford the cost of seeking medical attention in Nigeria and abroad.

    He said, “Such surgery usually costs so much and most of our people, especially those living in rural areas and the aged, cannot afford it.’’

    The commissioner urged the Federal Government to fix the health sector in order to reduce the rate of people travelling abroad for medical tourism.

    “We are attending to about 400 beneficiaries free of charge and you know how much it will cost in dollars or pounds if these people are to travel to U.S. or UK for such treatment.

    “This is the reason we are calling on the state government to pay attention to the health sector to reduce the money being spent on medical treatment abroad,’’ Ipaye said.

    In his speech, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Jagdeep Kapoor, said that the free surgical mission would be carried out by seven medical doctors from India.

    He said that Ogun was chosen by the Rotary International of Nigeria to benefit from the exercise.

    Oba Adewale Osinderu, the Elepe of Epe, thanked the state government for the giant strides recorded in the health sector and for bringing the programme to the door steps of the less-privileged.

    Osinderu, who is also the President, Remo Traditional Council, said: “Do you not know how much it costs to travel abroad for medical checkup, talk less of going for medical surgery?

    “At least, 400 people will benefit from the surgical mission.

    “We thank the state government and the Rotary International for deeming it fit to come up with this programme,’’ the traditional ruler said.

     

  • Ogun shuts hospital over patient’s death

    Ogun State government on Thursday shut down a private hospital – Glorious Ona Ara Clinic and Maternity Home, Abeokuta, following alleged unethical practice leading to the death of a patient, Kehinde Sikiru.

    Kehinde, 24, reportedly died due to “illegal” surgery carried out on him.

    In a statement issued by the Ministry of Health Information Officer, Taiyese Ebunlomo, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, said the closure was carried out by the ministry’s monitoring team at Itori Odo in Abeokuta South local government area of the state.

    “We have received so many calls, petitions and complaints from good people of the state on that particular hospital, performing illegal operations against the licence approved for the facility.

    “And there has been a standing order that patience with complications or complicated issues be immediately referred to the nearest general hospital for better treatment,” he said.

    The commissioner stated that Kehinde died as a result of the illegal operation carried out on him, adding that it was against the ethics of medical profession for Maternity Home, Mission Home and Traditional Birth Attendants to inject or preform operation on their patients as they are not licensed to do so.

    At least 168 private health facilities have been sealed off in the state since the revalidation and registration exercise commenced in January 2016.

     

  • Another fake medical doctor arrested in Ogun

    Another fake medical doctor has been arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun, a top government official has said.

    Dr Sola Adebiyi, Director, Hospital Services, Ogun State Ministry of Health, told newsmen on Friday in Abeokuta that one Sunday Adeyeye was the sixth quack nabbed in the state.

    She added that Adeyeye had been practising with a forged certificate obtained from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State.

    The director said that the culprit was arrested during the ongoing re-validation exercise of health facilities across the state.

    Adebiyi added that the arrest was made easier as the culprit unknowingly walked into his own doom at the re-validation venue at the ministry.

    The director said that the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Babatunde Ipaye, had made it mandatory for all private health facilities across the state be re-validated and re-registered following an incessant loss of lives by quacks.

    According to Adebiyi, the owner of the facility who unknowingly engaged the doctor, brought him for the re-validation of his hospital, where his fake certificate was discovered.

    “We were suspicious when the owner of Ganny-Hash Clinic and Maternity Hospital in Ifo, Mr Ganiyu Okewole, presented the said fake Dr Sunday Adeyeye’s certificate for re-validation of his facility.

    “We then asked him to bring the doctor in person which is one of our requirements for the exercise.

    “Going through the Ahmadu Bello University certificate he presented and comparing it with the ministry’s records, there we discovered he has been practising with a forged certificate and we immediately call the police to effect his arrest,’’ Adebiyi said.

    Responding to questions from newsmen, Adeyeye said he was not a doctor, that the ABU certificate was forged in his name in Zaria, adding that he has been working with the hospital since February 2017.

    Also speaking the proprietor of the affected clinic, Mr Ganiyu Okewole, said he was unaware of the doctor’s case.

    He said if he had not brought him for re-validation, he would not have known.

    NAN also reports that revalidation exercise started in January 2016.

    The task force has shut down 168 private health facilities since the commencement of the exercise in the state.

  • Over 1. 6 million Nigeria lives with diabetes

    The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye has disclosed that over 1.6 million Nigerians are living with type 2 form of Diabetes across the Country.

    The Commissioner made this disclosure in a chat with Journalists in Abeokuta, the State Capital, while campaigning and sensitizing members of the public on the prevalent rate of diabetes in the Country to mark the World Health Day celebration with the Global theme tagged “KILL DIABETES”.

    He said 2.2 Million Nigerians are careers of the diseases without knowing, adding that about 30% kidney failures in the Country are as a result of diabetes.

    “It has been discovered according to research that the rates at which people die come as a result of self inflicted None-Communicable diseases, like cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. I will like to put it on record that 30% kidney failure recorded cases came as a result of diabetes” Ipaye said.

    While calling on stakeholders to adopt multisectorial approach to challenges in the health sector in Ogun State, Ipaye said people should live a moderate lifestyle by eating, drinking and going for regular medical checkup.

    Speaking on the symptoms and prevention, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Dr. Nafiu Aigoro, said frequent urinating, excessive intake of water, growing lean and frequent eating without control are regular symptoms of diabetes, saying that smoking and obesity are also a major risk factor of diabetes.

    Urging members of the public to always feed on vegetables and fruits than junks food, Dr. Aigoro said regular exercised of the body can greatly reduced the risk of having diabetes and all other None-Communicable diseases
