    Senate okays Doro as minister

The Senate yesterday approved the nomination of Dr. Bernard Doro as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

His confirmation followed a brief screening session that lasted less than 30 minutes during plenary.

Doro, who becomes the third ministerial nominee from Plateau State in the current administration, outlined his vision for fostering an inclusive humanitarian ecosystem in the country.

He pledged to create a humanitarian ecosystem that is inclusive, guided by impartiality and independence.

After a few questions, senators expressed satisfaction with his credentials and capacity to serve.

The lawmakers asked him to take a bow and leave.

Last week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wrote the Senate, requesting it to screen and confirm Doro for appointment as a minister.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the President’s letter.

In his letter, President Tinubu said the request was made pursuant on Section 147, sub-section 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as altered).

Akpabio referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for consideration and confirmation “as soon as practicable”.

Doro’s nomination followed Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda’s appointment as the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in July.

Yilwatda previously served as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

President Tinubu’s letter, which Akpabio read, came 24 hours after the President announced the appointment of Doro as new ministerial nominee.

Responding to a question, Doro said he would work for peace and better treatment for individuals affected by any crisis, if he was assigned the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.

He said: “Regarding the security crisis, obviously, there is a consequence. The consequences is what has led to the several displacements of individuals and others having to relocate and to stay in internally displaced persons’ (IDP) camps.

“So, should I be assigned the humanitarian ministry, what I will be looking to do to bring some innovation into the ministry will be to create a humanitarian ecosystem that is efficient, that is transparent, and that is centred on the person that is being cared for.

“This is with a view to bringing dignity to the individual, to ensuring that the needs of this individual is met and this will be done based on principles that are well established in providing humanitarian action, things around impartiality, things around independence, things about just being human in our care for people.

“I believe that when we create synergy among the different agencies under the ministry of the humanitarian, then we are able to synergize and ensure that we are able to reduce duplication and achieve result.

“I think one of the main things around that is to be able to target the intended individuals that are affected, which is always a challenge.

“I believe that technology can help us to be able to achieve that.”

Responding to another question, Doro said: “If you look at my track record – and you can visit benadoro.org, which is my website – I have key principles that we want to achieve within our community.

“One of our set objectives for creating Benadoro Vision is to be able to promote peace. Recently, for example, we engaged young people in Plateau; we asked them what individuals could do to promote peace.

“They come up with various intelligent propositions, which we have encapsulated into an article and then published on our website.

“So, what I’m trying to say in essence is that by the grace of God, we have been involved in peace initiatives. As a leader in Plateau State, we will continue to preach tolerance. We’ll continue to make sure that we provide all-inclusive leadership.”
