Isheri kidnap: Police confirm suspect’s arrest

The Nigeria Police have confirmed the arrest of one of the suspected kidnappers of Isheri North GRA landlord, Dr Dayo Adekoya.

Force Headquarters spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) confirmed the suspect’s arrest on the telephone on Wednesday.

Joseph Omoni, 38, was apprehended around 4:00 am on Tuesday, at Ogijo in Ogun State by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police’ (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

Omoni, an Ondo State indigene, allegedly confessed to being among the gang that killed broadcaster Aisha Alli-Balogun Abiose and kidnapped nine persons including the deceased’s daughter.

The suspect also confessed to being among those who invaded Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC), adding that he got N2million as his share of the ransom paid.

For the kidnap of Adekoya where three persons were killed and two others injured, Omoni, the police said confessed to getting N250,000 as his share of the ransom, adding that so many people partook in the loot.

Omoni, it was gathered, took policemen to two houses he and another gang member called Chairman built at Century Village in Ogijo, from proceeds of kidnapping and they were sealed.

In his confessional statement, Omoni said: “I got N250,000 from the ransom of the Isheri North estate secretary kidnap because the sum paid was too small, but for the Nigerian Turkish International College, I got N2 million. I was also involved in the kidnap at Ikorodu road where Aisha Balogun, a popular TV presenter was killed. We didn’t know her until we read in the papers that she was a presenter. I think that incident happened in December, I got about N1m from the ransom.

“I cannot say what really happened during the estate secretary’s kidnap, but we exchanged fire while escaping with the man. We read in the papers that three security men were killed. Well, I cannot say that I regret everything. I was able to build houses with the money I got from the Nigerian Turkish school. I bought tiles, windows and other accessories to complete my house at Century village, in Ogijo community,” he said.

It was learnt that the police were working hard to arrest other fleeing culprits, who are said to all be natives of Ondo State.

Meanwhile, kidnappers of two guards and five Eliasa farm workers in Epe have demanded N50million for their release.

Their demand was said to have been communicated to the farm manager through the mobile phone of one of the victims.

Reacting to the kidnap in the area, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police  (AIG) in charge of Zone II, Kayode Aderanti assured the victims would be rescued alive.

He said: “We are going to rescue the victims alive. We are doing everything to police that area because the major problem in that part of the state is its porosity.

“We will police that area 24 hours daily and my advice to business owners, school operators in that area is that they should be security conscious and do their background check of anybody they want to employ.

“We are also going to do our own job to see to the release of the victims without paying a dime to the abductors.”

  • Gunmen kidnap two guards, five farmers in Epe

Barely 24 hours after an Isheri North landlord, Dr. Dayo Adekoya regained freedom from kidnappers’ den, seven other victims have been abducted.

The victims including two members of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and five Eliasa farm workers were kidnapped in Igbodu-Isiwo, Epe, a Lagos-Ogun border community.

It was gathered that the kidnappers clad in military camouflages, stormed the farm around 7am, whisking away their victims.

The two guards, who were employed to secure the farm and workers in the wake of incessant kidnapping, were said to have been overpowered by the kidnappers numbering about 15.

At the time of filing this story, the kidnappers who took their victims through a bush path to their speedboats, were yet to establish contact with the farm management.

According to a source, six farmers and a customer were kidnapped two weeks ago by gunmen who usually attacked in broad day light.

He said: “The state government and security agencies should focus more attention on the area because of the increase in kidnappings.”

The Nation reports that incidents of kidnappings have remained unabated around border communities.

Last month, 24-year-old Ifeoluwa Olabiyi was kidnapped alongside three others, all workers at Tanda Farms, and they only regained freedom after N2million cash and two cartons of Red Label whiskey were given the criminals.

Olabiyi’s fiance, Ayodeji Akinyemi who negotiated with the kidnappers disclosed that they had a room for babies and first aid kit to treat the injured.

Confirming the incident, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) said: “It is true, seven farm workers were kidnapped at Igbodu area and we are working assiduously to rescue them.”

  • Update: Three killed as gunmen kidnap doctor in Lagos

Gunmen numbering about 20 in the wee hours of Thursday stormed Isheri North GRA, off Channels Avenue, killing three persons.

Two others people were also injured in the incident.

The gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers reportedly struck around 1:00 a.m., scaled the fence into the fortified residence of the residents association’s secretary, Dr. Dayo Adekoya, situated on Road 18, off Olusegun Tawoju Avenue, and whisked him away.

After trying unsuccessfully to break through Adekoya’s armoured door, the gunmen, it was gathered, smashed the windows and walls from where they gained access into his home.

They came through the waterways, berthed their boats at the nearby creek, before using a ladder to scale the high rise and electrified fence.

Having entered the house, they reportedly made for the victim, took him out through his gate and attempted to use him to access other neighbours’ homes.

The plan to kidnap more landlords was however prevented by security men on duty and police operatives who arrived the estate and engaged the kidnappers.

The Nation gathered that it was in the course of using Adekoya to gain entry into other people’s homes that the two members of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and a carpenter identified as Ibadan were killed for resisting them.

The two others who sustained injuries were said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

It was gathered that the Nigerian Army deployed Phantom IV drone to survey the area and possibly locate the kidnappers and victim.

When The Nation visited the scene, Lagos Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, accompanied by Commander 9th Brigade, Gen. Elias Attu, Commander Rapid Response Squad  (RRS) Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), and  as well as the Inspector General of Police’ Intelligence Response Team (IRT) had left the scene.
