The senator representing Lagos West District, Dr Idiat Adebule, has inaugurated a newly constructed Skill Acquisition Centre at Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos.

The facility, built as part of her constituency projects, is designed to empower residents through vocational training and promote self-reliance.

Senator Adebule said the centre would complement the efforts of the Lagos State Government and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government in human resource development of the people of Lagos-West District.

According to her, the centre is just a tip of the iceberg, adding that more of such impactful projects are ongoing across the 28 LGAs/LCDAs of Lagos-West from Badagry, Ifako-Ijaiye, Agege, Alimosho, Ojo, Ikeja, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, to Amuwo-Odofin and others. She urged the residents to protect the centre to reap maximum benefits.

“The money used in constructing this place was given to us by the Federal Government, which means it is your money. This project is yours, and I encourage you to take care of it so that generations to come will benefit from it,” she said. She noted that the centre was one of several ongoing constituency projects across Lagos West, adding that a new market in Agbado/Oke-Odo would be inaugurated soon.

According to her, other interventions in Mushin will include the installation of solar-powered streetlights as well as the planned construction of a one-kilometre road at Market Street, near Ijesha. Adebule thanked her constituents for giving her their mandates, stressing that their support made such interventions possible.

“Whatever we are celebrating here today is about you. You voted for us, you gave us the mandate, and your money is working for you,” she said.

She assured the residents that training programmes at the new centre would commence before the end of the year, with the facility fully equipped for youths and artisans.

Former Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Rasaq Ajala, described the project as a step toward reducing unemployment and enhancing sustainable development in the area.

He said he had persuaded the Senator to establish a skills acquisition centre instead of classrooms.

“She initially wanted to build classrooms, but I told her no. She asked what we would prefer, and I suggested a skills acquisition centre for the people of Odi-Olowo. At first, she was concerned about how to accommodate it within her budget since it was not part of her initial plan.

However, because of her love for her people she reconsidered and found a way to make it possible,” he said.

Chairman of the council, Seyi Jakande, hailed Senator Adebule for the gesture.

Jakande promised further support of the council for the senator.

Adebule described the results as far better from what was recorded during the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

She hailed APC members for ensuring victory at the unit.

“We are able to achieve this feat because we listened to those who monitor the last election and reviewed their reports.

‘’We realised our shortcomings and re-strategised by intensifying more on grass root campaigns. We thank God for the result we achieved today,” she said.

According to her, the late arrival of INEC officials affected the turnout of voters “because people returned to their homes due to the absence of INEC officials at the polling unit but as soon as they are informed that they are around, they came out to vote.”

She advised INEC to perfect the electoral process and rectify all inadequacies that might have caused the delay in the voting process, adding “no matter how perfect an organisation will be, they are bound to have challenges, but the most important thing is for INEC to learn from their mistakes, perfect the electoral process and rectify all issues that affect smooth and early take off,” she said.

Mafe dedicated the victory to all hard-working members of the party.

  • Women empower girls at SHE Tech Fair

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule has urged parents to champion the campaign to demystify the stereotypical belief that girls are not suited to science-related careers.

She spoke while giving the opening remark at the SHE Science and Technology Fair organised by the Christopher Kolade Foundation (CKF) at Habour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Dr Adebule, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Deputy Governor’s office, Mrs Yetunde Odejayi, also underscored the need to boost girls’ confidence to take up STEM careers.

She said: “Though currently girls and women remain underrepresented in the science and technology fields, this is not as a result of difference in intellectual capacity but due to stereotypes of parents who believe it is awkward for girls pursuing successful career paths in this field.

“The challenge is, therefore, on all stakeholders including parents, the teachers and the society to help change the mindset of our girls and demystify the falsehood of science and technology being the stronghold or exclusive rights of boys.

Interestingly, CKF did just that during the event as it paraded an array of successful women in STEM who shared their stories with over 532  SS2 and SS3 pupils being supported by the Foundation to embrace Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

A panel of three women scientists moderated by Mrs Oreoluwa Lesi, CEO, Women’s Technology Centre (W.TEC) advised  the girls to follow their dreams, put in the hard work, and develop themselves.

Mrs Margaret Ajiboye, Sales leader, Cummins West Africa, revealed how her engineering education and passion for fixing things led her into product specialisation, sales and even a stint as lecturer. She said she was driven by a desire to develop those coming behind.

For Mrs Olamide Ayeni-Babajide of Pearl Recycling, life began to take shape following a challenge from her father when she was only seven and wanted to give up because of bullying that she could be the best regardless of what others did around her.

She told how her exceptional brilliance led her to a rapid education and successful computer engineering career where she earned as much as 35,000 dollars. However, she said she gave it all up to pursue her passion to rid Lagos of waste by turning waste tyres into furniture, jewelry, others.

“I earned my pay as an engineer. I worked for six years with my computer engineering certificate. I got almost 10 international certifications. I was being paid 35,000 dollars. But I woke up one day and wanted to resign. I asked myself what I would do if I was not afraid. I told myself I would change the face of waste problem. Today, I am known for my work with Pearl Recycling not as an engineer,” she said.

For Country Director of Andela Nigeria, Mrs Omowale David-Ashiru, her message to the girls was continuous self-development.

Mrs David-Ashiru, who was represented by Taiwo Judah-Ajayi, Senior Director, Human Resource for Andela, counseled the girls to go for roles they may not necessarily qualify for, but have the potential to perform in if they eliminate distractions.

The Keynote Speaker, Mrs Onyeche Tifase, charged the girls to have the right attitude and be willing to take up challenges on the job like she did until she became the first female Managing Director of Siemens Nigeria.

“Focus on being the best you can be. Continue to build and believe in yourselves. Don’t be comfortable; challenge yourself,” she said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the founder, CKF, Dr Christopher Kolade, told the girls their future would be determined by decisions they take today.

“We are asking you to know today that you are the leaders we are now training, waiting for your opportunities tomorrow. If you are the leaders today, it means you have started taking decisions now. In order to take good decisions today, what you need to do is to have a vision of what your tomorrow will look like,” he said.

Consultant coordinator of the foundation, Omobola Lana, said the participating students were exposed to hands-on science/technology, leadership and remedial training to encourage them to take up STEM careers.

  • LCCI, UNIFOAM, others reward excellent essayists

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, has underscored the importance of exposing young ones to entrepreneurship education early.

To this end, she praised the Lagos State Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) for focusing its secondary school essay competition for this year on entrepreneurship.

Participants wrote on: “The Role of Entrepreneurship in National Development” for the competition.

Dr Adebule said writing on the topic would help the young ones learn how entrepreneurship helps economic growth and development.

She said: “I am aware that the theme for this year is “The Role of Entrepreneurship in National Development”. We cannot over-emphasize the significance and roles of entrepreneurship to the socio-economic development of any nation. It has been described as the driving force of decentralizing and restructuring an economy while increasing and enhancing the financial capability of individuals.

“Furthermore, entrepreneurship creates job opportunities, promotes and gives strength to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Over the years, a high level of entrepreneurship is what has led to economic development of many nations we see today.

“As a matter of fact, well-developed countries are more interested in entrepreneurs than people in white collar jobs. Today, education is being redefined to produce entrepreneurs and not job seekers.”

Also speaking, former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Sosan, whose firm, GFR Educational Services Ltd coordinated the competition for LCCI, said 29 schools participated in the competition out of 150.

She thanked the sponsors, Skool Media, UNIFOAM, FIRST REGISTRARS, Smile Communications Limited, and others for their support.

“I humbly express our appreciation to our worthy partners and sponsors on the programme who are both individuals and organisations, for deeming it fit to invest in the future of these children thereby building a stronger tomorrow in our nation,” she said.

It rained prizes for all 29 participants.  They got attractive gifts and cash awards from the various sponsors, including UniFoam Group, an indigenous manufacturer of quality foam products and beddings.

For winning the competition, Mary Leonard of Festac Girls Senior Secondary School, Festac Town, got N250,000, plaque, Samsung Tablet, Smile modem and a certificate.  Second placed Bukola Akintunde of Queen’s College Yaba got N100,000, and other gifts; while third placed Chidera Duru of Lagoon Secondary School Lekki got N75,000 and other gifts.

Fourth and fifth placed Sonaike Bolarinwa of Dowen College, Lekki, and Desree Isibor of Dansol High School, Ogba, both got Samsung tablets and certificates.

Twenty others got mattresses, pillows and beddings from UNIFOAM Group, while some got a company to paint the classrooms in their schools.

Head, Commercial (Lagos and Southern Nigeria), Unifoam Group, Udochi Ajuzie-Nwani, said the firm which opened in 1981 was proud sponsor the event.

“We maintain a strong stance in supporting and encouraging the early involvement of the younger minds into entrepreneurship which we have displayed by rewarding these young stars who have displayed uncommon knowledge in the just concluded Essay competition,” he said.
