  • Akeredolu and Ondo’s next level

When Winston Churchill noted that:”Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts,” he most certainly never had one of the active players in Nigeria’s volatile political firmament in mind: Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. For instance, when he contested the Ondo State governorship poll under the Action Congress (AC) platform and lost, the pundits felt  that was the end of his political career or ambition but  he never gave up. That was in 2012.

In a twist of fate, some four years later, in 2016 he threw his hat into the ring, this time under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and won.  He must have done something differently. But what exactly was that?  He came to grips with the bitter fact that his people, the politically savvy Ondo citizens hate to be dictated to.

In retrospect, it would be recalled that during the heady days of the Second Republic when the then ruling NPN attempted to forcefully foist Chief Akin Omoboriowo on Ondo people, it instantly triggered off violent reactions. This, most unfortunately led to the wanton and wasteful carnage, as evidenced in the destruction of precious lives and property running into millions of Naira.

Similarly, Ondo people’s penchant to be left alone to freely express their democratic franchise through the ballot box without overbearing foreign influence also came into full play in 2017. That was when Dr. Olusegun Mimiko won the gubernatorial seat under the platform of Labour Party, a political platform that was registered barely three months before the governorship election!

Though he was initially denied that mandate but it did not take long for him to reclaim it via the election tribunal. On that score, Akeredolu came to grips with the fact that his people’s political persuasion must be respected at all times. He learnt the hard way, made the necessary amend and got it right this time around. He must have gleaned from the wise counsel of Grover Cleveland who noted that: “A government for the people must depend for its success on the intelligence, the morality, the justice, and the interest of the people themselves.”

Truth be told however, winning is one thing. Making good use of the opportunity to use the instrument of governance to right the wrongs of the past and positively impact on the quality of lives of the led majority is another thing entirely. So, when he eventually mounted the pedestal of political power as the governor of the state he decided to make a difference, in more ways than one.

Firstly, he cleared the backlog of the seven months’ salary arrears his administration inherited from the Mimiko-led government.  And he has, unlike several of his counterparts strewn across the landscape of Nigeria, continued to pay the worker’s emoluments as at when due. To Akeredolu, a respected lawyer it is morally unjustifiable, indeed reprehensible for any state governor to collect federal allocations and sundry bail-out funds and yet refuse to pay the long-suffering workers their constitutional rights. Next, he went a step further.

He came up with the policy document aptly tagged the: “Blue Print to Progress, 2017-2021,” This followed a report of the Strategic Development and Policy Implementation Committee SDPIC, put up by his government.  It was conceived as a policy template that will guide the APC-led state government in Ondo State in developing the economy of the state.

While unveiling the document back in September, 2017  at the Dome in Akure, Akeredolu, said the move signaled the commencement of total transformation of all sectors by his administration. He emphasized on the importance of meaningful planning to the success of any government, noting that that was why his government chose to take off on a sound footing based on well mapped out strategies.

He noted that the document would chart a clear course of government activities for the next four years, and stand the administration in good stead in engagements with development partners including World Bank, UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNIDO, FAO, JICA, USAID.

So far, it has been an action-packed ride carrying the people along the blueprint focused on job creation, urban renewal and infrastructural development across the nooks and crannies of the Sunshine State. For instance, once dilapidated, pot hole riddled roads such as Akure to Ondo, Akoko through Owo to the federal government-owned, Lagos-Abuja  expressway are all wearing a more solidified and durable look. Work has also begun on the important Owo-Ondo highway.

And central to the envisioned fast-paced economic development, a vital Interchange is being built at the well-known Ore axis that links to the Northern and Eastern parts of the country.

To facilitate quicker economic development focus is shifting on better use of water transport system even as two airlines- Air Peace, Lagos-Akure and Overland Air, Abuja-Akure have began daily operations.

Still on efforts to draw global attention to the state, the tourism potentials are being reinvigorated. For instance, Idanre Hills is attracting government intervention for upgrading even as Agogo cultural festival in Owo is receiving the impetus for a renewal to make it a tourist destination. Owo, it should be noted once hosted the epi-centre for the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s progressive political renaissance, as is also an iconic map location where the late educationist and one time governor, Adekunle Ajasin took a firm root.

With a firm focus on agriculture to look at the timbre, cocoa industries, the tomato factory in Arigidi and Okitipua palm oil industry, Ondo State is well on its way to realizing its immense God-given economic giant status.

    I inherited a N220bn debt from Mimiko – Akeredolu

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State says his administration inherited a debt burden of N220.58bn at its inception.

Akeredolu made this known in Akure on Wednesday while swearing-in commissioners and special advisers. He advised the people of the state to refrain from acts that could further push the state into deep economic crisis.

But his claim about the debt legacy was promptly attacked by a former commissioner for Information during the Mimiko administration, Mr Kayode Akinmade, who said that Mimiko left N20billion in the kitty of the state government. Akinmade skirted the issue of debt and also did not explain why Mimiko failed to match the N38.64 billion left in the kitty of the state government by his predecessor, Gov.Olusegun Agagu.

Akeredolu said with a debt of more than N220 billion, it was not difficult for anyone to know that the government’s capacity for adjustment to cater for the people had been stretched to its limit.

According to him Internal Debt of N53.15billion constituted almost a quarter of the debt legacy.

Others are External Debt, N17.48billion; Unpaid Salaries and Allowances, Aug. to Dec. 2016, N17.27billion; and Jan. to Feb. 2017, N6,91billion, Ondo State Pension Liabilities, N4.80billion; Ondo State Gratuity, N15.04billion; Unpaid Local Government Salaries and Allowances Aug. to Dec. 2016, N9.3billion; Jan. to Feb. 2017, N5.19billion.

Local Government Pension Liabilities of N25.23billion; Local Government Gratuities N20,96billion; Contractors’ Liabilities N39.74billion; Outstanding payment requests in the Office of the Accountant-General without cash backing, N5.45billion made up the rest of the debt profile.

However, Akeredolu promised to provide the needed leadership to move the state forward and make life more abundant for the people.

“We will continue to strive to keep that vow within the available resources. We can turn things around positively,’’ he said.

The governor also congratulated the commissioners and special assistants, adding that they should use this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people.

Mr Femi Agagu, who spoke on behalf of other commissioners, thanked the governor for the privilege given them to serve the people.

“We are aware that your administration has a blueprint to transform the state. Collectively, we will take the state to a glorious destination.

“We pledge to discharge our duties faithfully and with the fear of God. We will defend the oath we have sworn to and we will uphold this honour you have bestowed on us,” Agagu said.

The commissioners are Mr Taofiq Abdusallam, Mr Rasheed Badmus, Mr Solagbade Amodeni, Chief Adegboyega Adefarati, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, Mrs Omowumi Olatunji, Mr Donald Ojogo, Mr Yemi Olowolabi and Dr Wahab Adegbenro.

Others are; Mr Funso Esan, Mr Wale Akinterinwa, Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan, Alhaji Olurimisi Ismaila, Mr Femi Agagu, Prof. Bayonle Ademodi, Mrs Julianah Fagbemi, Mr Timilehin Adelegbe and Mr Kola Olawole.

The special advisers sworn in include Mr Victor Olabimtan, Mrs Olubukola Ademosu, Mr Tunji Ariyomo, Mr Tobi Ogunleye, and Mr Akinboye Oyewunmi.

Others are Dr Olawunmi Ilawole, Dr Jibayo Adeyeye, Mr Tunji Fabiyi, Mr Alaba Isijola, and Mr Raheem Aminu.

Former Gov. Olusegun Mimiko handed over to Akeredolu on Feb.24, 2017.

Osinbajo, Ambode, Mimiko, others attend RCCG Holy Ghost Congress

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo and his wife, Oludolapo; Governor of Lagos State, Akinwumi Ambode and his wife, Bolanle; Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and his wife Olukemi; Speaker, Ekiti state house of assembly, Kola Oluwawole and Chief judge of South Africa, Mogoeng Mogoeng were on Friday present at the Redemption Camp on km46, Lagos Ibadan Expressway, for this year’s Holy Ghost Congress of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), with the theme; ‘Complete restoration’.

The one week long congress which began on Monday, December 5, ended will end Saturday, December 10.

It was a gathering of millions of worshippers from all over the world.

In his sermon on Friday night, The General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, spoke on the topic, ‘Complete restoration’.

The Cleric explained that complete restoration is a process.  He said every Christian is entitled to miracles,  noting that those who are not born again cannot get miracle, because miracles comes from God and God is holy.

Reading from Ezekiel chapter 3, verse 7 to 10, Adeboye said; “Whenever God wants to begin the process of restoration, He remembers the forgotten and miracles are bound to follow. God also he visits the person and something miraculous happens

“Anytime God want to do something there must be a noise; When God arrives, there must be a shaking; nakedness is covered; shame is ended; the  wind blows, and whenever the wind blows there will be miracles,” he said.

The Cleric assured that the blessings of God makes rich and adds no sorrow. “When a miracle comes from God it is clean, with no string are attached and there will be divine protection. “When you are child of God your future is secured. Whatever is available to Jesus is available to you,” he said.

Ondo Guber: Ibrahim heads to S’Court,

Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim has reacted to the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to remove his name as the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.

Ibrahim said in a statement shortly after the judgment that he was sure of getting justice at the Supreme Court.

He said there was no way the incumbent Governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, would succeed himself by planting Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) as his successor.

    His statement reads in part.

“I have read the decision of the Court of Appeal delivered today (Wednesday). We have nothing to lose, as the Supreme Court sits on the same case tomorrow.

“We shall get justice at the Supreme Court and if PDP wins Saturday election, we shall have our four-year mandate to rule Ondo State.

“Let me advise you not to abuse anyone or fight over this one day ruling. Mimiko will not succeed himself with Jegede. This is too sure.

“We continue with our work and remain in our great party, PDP. I love the great people of Ondo state and I thank you all for continuous support.”

  • ‘Hold Mimiko responsible for fresh breach of peace’

‘Hold Mimiko responsible for fresh breach of peace’

The Ondo State Chapter of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) has called on security agencies in the State to hold the State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko responsible for any fresh breach of peace in the State.

AD in a release in Akure signed by its Secretary, Dr Sola Agboola on Monday alleged that Governor has surreptitiously begun another round of the planned breach of public peace and security in his bid to cause confusion and create a semblance of insecurity.

He said: “This is to facilitate his plans for the postponement of the Governorship Election coming up on November 26.”It will be recalled that Governor Mimiko who had been away from the State to Abuja for upward of two weeks in his prosecution of his Court case against the removal of the name of his Candidate for the election, Mr Eyitayo Jegede from the ballot paper, came back at the weekend.

On Sunday, he  addressed his supporters at the International Event Centre (The Dome) where he amongst others urged them to brace up for another rounds of protests in the State to force the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the election thus buying them time with to prosecute their Court case.

“While we are not opposed to his getting justice at the Court, which we believe is his fundamental right, it is however an irony that a man saddled with the onerous responsibilities as the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the State is now the very one behind sponsored mayhem in the very state he governs all because of politics.

“This is to threaten the peace and security he professes to uphold at all times when he took his Oath of Office.”

The AD therefore, called on the security agencies in the State to be abreast of this “grand plot” by the governor and be abreast of this latest attempt by Governor Mimiko to sacrifice the lives, properties and peace of Ondo State on the altar of politics.

I have confidence in Jegede – Mimiko

The Governor of Ondo state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko on Wednesday said he has undoubted confident in the Governorship candidate of the Ahmed Markafi led’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).
He said he is also confident that Jegede, who served under him as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, would continue to move the state higher.
Mimiko, spoke at the official flag-off campaign of Jegede ahead of November 26, poll.
The event was attended by Markafi, who was represented by Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Governor Ayodele Fayose, South West PDP Chairman, Eddy Olafeso, former Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Omolade Oluwateru, John Olubunmi Olowe, Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo, Ondo state Assembly Speaker, Jumoke Akindele, National Assembly members among others.
The governor said he has shown to the people of the state that the interest of the masses remains the priority of the PDP, adding that his government has delivered on his promises ranging from Health, Education, Infrastructure and social services.
Mimiko said his achievements in the state must be sustained by his successor, Jegede, assuring the people of the state that he (Jegede) would consolidate on the legacy of the PDP led government.
The party candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede assured the people that the PDP would win the forthcoming election.
He charged the people of the state to brace up to defend their votes, saying no gentleman on election day.
He promised to create wealth for the state by leveraging through a road network.
He noted that nobody going to the northern party from the south-west that would not pass through Ondo State.
Jegede assured that his administration would work on ways to create wealth for the state through that privilege.
Adeyeye insisted that Jegede’s name still with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging the party members to work very hard to ensure victory for PDP.
Fayose said “we are in a country where opposition parties are contesting against INEC.
“This country belongs to all of us but by geographical demarcation, Ondo state belongs to you.
“What they did in Edo state won’t happen here. What happen in 1983 won’t be allowed to occur again in the state. Be prepared to protect your votes”.
  • Boroffice berates Mimiko for funding Ondo PDP, forsaking striking workers

Boroffice berates Mimiko for funding Ondo PDP, forsaking striking workers

The senator representing Ondo North senatorial district, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice has berated the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko for disbursing huge state funds to‎ the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State at a time the indefinite strike embarked upon by workers is taking severe tolls on the people and economy of the State.
He alleged that the money was reportedly disbursed to the PDP to enable it kickstart a well-orchestrated rigging plot ahead of the forthcoming governorship election by mobilising unqualified persons and political thugs for the ongoing continuous registration exercise and by extension seeking to manipulate the voters’ register.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his media aide, Kayode Adeniyi, the senator also accused Governor Olusegun Mimiko of personally coordinating the bleeding of state partly-owned company, Owena Oil and Gas Ltd to death for selfish reasons.
The APC Chieftain described the action of the government as irresponsible and callous, challenging Governor Olusegun Mimiko to come out clean on the finances of the State.
“The recent disclosure by Governor Olusegun Mimiko that the government has only N3.4 billion in its coffers is ‎the clearest sign in recent times that the state government has perpetuated a culture of wasteful spending in the last 7 years.
“It is instructive to note that many states including Borno State had never owed salaries. Despite National economic challenges and Boko Haram insurgency, Borno State that is not an oil producing state has managed to fulfil its obligations to workers. Therefore, there is no acceptable justification for the continued delay of workers’ salaries by the Mimiko-led administration in Ondo State.
“The trite claim by the government that it pays 3.9 billion on monthly wage bill can only suggest an institutionalised fraud. It is on record that government has not done any major recruitment since 2009. The Ondo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) recruitment scam is still fresh in the memories of our people. How is the government expending the bogus sum of 3.9 billion every month? What percentage of this sum is voted to the personal security and the political appointees of the governor?
“Meanwhile, the Mimiko-led administration is the architect of the hardship that is presently ravaging our state. This is a government that has been shouting improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). This is a government that gets Oil derivation funds regularly. This is an administration that inherited over N30billion from the government it succeeded in 2009.
“The Mimiko-led administration should tell the people how itmisappropriated over N50billion worth of assets and cash owned by ‎Owena Oil and Gas Ltd. The governor should consider it a matter urgent importance to address the people of Ondo State on how he has expended these funds.
“I am confident that if the Mimiko-led administration had allowed the oil company to perform in accordance to its founding ‎visions as conceived by Late Governor Adebayo Adefarati, the state would have been able to comfortably pay workers’ salaries and meet other financial obligations.
“The Mimiko-led adminstration cannot continue to blame the federal government that gave our debt-ridden state lifeline and still willing to offer economic aid. The state government cannot continue to hide under non-existing capital projects. What are the capital projects? ‎Where are the capital projects?
“Finally, it is beyond imagination that a government can starve its workers while spending huge state funds on political activities. That is utterly callous. It is clear that the irresponsible administration in Ondo State has outlived its essences,” the statement read.
