  • Harmatan won’t hamper Dream Team’s quest for glory

    Call it the spirit of the Nigerian player, or the zeal to be among  the best you will not be far from the truth, as players of the national U-23 men’s football team, Dream Team VI, Monday morning defied the chilling cold harmatan weather in Abuja to commence the team’s build up for its first game against Gabon next month.

    Even though some of them jokingly asked each other who put on the A/C as they came out of their room to face the cold weather, they were not deterred. As as early as 5.30 am coach Samson Siasia and his back room staff were already by the team’s bus waiting for the players, this attitude showed the boys were in for serious business.

    On getting to the practice pitch of the Abuja national stadium, the players had a first hand feel of what to come as the tartan track became their battle ground as the coaches wanted to see how fit they were, and trust the players they did not disappoint as they took all the physical exercise dished at them by the coaches in their strides.

    This they did for an hour before the session was called off by coach Siasia.

    At 11am the players were then taken to the gym at their Febson Hotel camp for another round of exercises that saw them being pushed to their limits.

    Addressing the players, head coach Samson Siasia said the players would be going through these physical exercises for the next one week, as their training schedule for now will be three times a day, as they do not have time on their hands, putting in mind that their first game is against Gabon is just days away.

    “You should leave all the enjoyments and merriment you had during the yuletide season and face the job at hand, these training could be really rigourous, but to be the best you must give your best or else you don’t have any business being in this team ” he said.

    Meanwhile aside the presence of all the invited home-based players who have arrived camp, the players were thrown into joy as two of the foreign-based players Atanda Sadiq and Stanley Amuzie stormed the team’s camp to increase the fight for jerseys.

    According to them they do not want to take chances of being too over-confident of making the team, so they had to report with the rest of their team mates since they are still around.

    Croatia-based trio arrive for U-23 screening

    HNK Rijeka B team trio, Collins Jamilu, Gerald Diyoke and Goodness Ajayi, are presently part of the foreign based players in camp for the Under-23 screening, sl10.ng reports.

    The trio arrived camp on Monday and had so far participated in two training sessions in a bid to win a place in Nigeria’s next U-23 team that will take part in the All Africa Games and Olympics.

    Left full back Collins and striker Ajayi have had stints with the Rijeka first team in the past, but the pair were sent to the division below after they failed to break into the first team.

    Collins was part of the Nigeria U-20 team of two years ago and played in the Intertoto Cup, while Ajayi arrived late in camp in Germany, hence he missed out on the chance to train with the team.

    Meanwhile, Diyoke a left footed defensive midfielder, who is yet to sign professional terms with the team, is highly rated in the B team and played a key role in helping the side win the 62nd annual Rivers Cup in the summer.

    They are part of the eight Nigerian youngsters currently on the books of the Croatia first division side, but they play for the B team who are campaigning in the third division.

    The Nigeria U-23 side will this week commence the second batch of screening, specifically for foreign based footballers ahead the 2015 All African Games.

    Coach Samson Siasia after given the local-based professionals a chance to break into his team decided to invite foreign based players for a chance to represent their country.

    Addressing the players at the end of the first screening exercise, the former Super Eagles striker described the players as patriots for taking time to participate in the selection process.

    “I must commend you all for coming down despite the short notice. You guys have sacrificed a lot to come here.

    “I want to commend your efforts and assure you that we will not forget you in our plans, “Goal quoted the ex-Nantes striker as saying to the players.

    Siasia will be hoping to qualify Nigeria for the All African Games as well as the Olympics in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

    Siasia wants European opposition

    Nigeria U-23 Coach, Samson Siasia, has said he is hoping to play some friendly games in Europe before February’s 2015 All Africa Games qualifier against Gabon.

    Siasia had earlier stated his intention to play African opposition before the qualifiers against Gabon, but has now confirmed to sl10.ng that he is also looking to play against tougher opponents in Europe to get the team in shape for the upcoming qualifiers.

    However, he admitted that they are still working with match agents to secure the games.

    “We are still working with some match agents to see if they can get us some good games.

    “When we come back in January (after the Christmas break) and after our physical exercises, we will try to go to Europe and anywhere we can get these games.

    “We will try to play against some tough opposition to kind of size ourselves up against stronger teams to get ourselves prepared for the February game,” Siasia told sl10.ng.

    Ex – Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has tasked players undergoing trials in the national U-23 camp to imbibe the spirit of commitment and hard work in order to make the team as well as excelling in their career.

    The former Everton defender who visited the screening venue on Thursday expressed his delight watching the players in action, while insisting there was still room for improvement.

    “I was like one of you guys. It was nice coming to watch you play, though this is a training session, Goal quoted Yobo as saying to the players.

    “The coach is like a brother, a good friend. When he saw me and asked me to come, I just can’t say no. I started just like you, if not worse.”

    “I just want to encourage you. I’m happy with what I’m seeing; there is still room for improvement in your career, just believe in yourself, believe in your coach, and believe in your teammate.

    “It’s not a do or die affair, it has to be team work. Even if I knew there was competitions amongst you, you have to keep it friendly, but most importantly you have to believe in God.

    “You have great talent; I have seen most of you now. I believe in this team especially in your coach; you guys are privileged.

    “This team is privileged to have one of the best African coaches taking care of them, so you have to listen to him. You have to work very hard. If you work hard and you don’t listen to him it won’t work,” he concluded.

    Dream Team’s invitation excites Onduku

    CSMS Iași of Romania forward, Gomo Onduku, has said he is thrilled to be called up by the Nigeria U-23 team ahead of a 2015 All Africa Games qualifier against Gabon.

    The 21-year-old winger is among three new players invited by Samson Siasia, africanFootball.com reports.

    “I have received an invitation letter to be part of the national U-23 team currently in camp in Abuja. I am so happy for the invitation,” he told africanFootball.com.

    “I have been in the national team setting before and I am glad to be back again. I give thanks to coach Samson Siasia for this opportunity and I am going there to justify this invitation and put in my best.”

    The other players invited alongside the ex-Concordia Chiajna forward are Norway-based striker Leke James and David Ifeanyi Nworah.

    James was the third best African Striker in Norwegian top-flight league in the 2014 season with 10 goals in 23 games last season behind Cote d’Ivoire Frank Boli (13 goals) and Nigerian striker Daniel Chima (11 goals).

    Nworah from Moroccan club Olympic Club de Saf featured for the Golden Eaglets in 2011.

    Tottenham Hotspur has stopped ex-Golden Eaglets star, Musa Yahaya, from the U- 23 National Team training camp, saying it is yet to receive an official invitation from the Nigeria Football Federation.

    Therefore, the attacking midfielder will continue practicing with the White Hart Lane outfit until February next year when he is expected to link up with the Flying Eagles, ahead of the African Youth Championship in Senegal.

    ”The Nigeria Football Federation has to send an invitation letter to the London club before it will agree to release Yahaya,” a source close to the Mutunchi Academy product told sl10.ng.

    ”NFF have to write to the club. Yahaya is not coming because Tottenham Hotspur officials are unaware of the screening exercise.

    ”Remember that he does not own himself, he has an agreement with Spurs, and will remain with the team till February.”

    The team coach, Samson Siasia, is aware that many of the invited players will not honour the call – up except they get green light from their respective clubs, mostly based in Europe.

    ”The Nigeria Football Federation is expected to send the invitation letters, without that the club won’t release them.

    ”We have done everything, by Monday the federation will start sending the letters to the clubs,” Siasia told sl10.ng.

    Chief Coach of the Nation’s U-23 team, Samson Siasia has urged soccer loving Nigerians to assist him in moulding a team that would be able to qualify for all the tournaments they have entered to play.

    In a chat with SportingLife in Abuja shortly after paying a condolence visit to Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Abuja Chapter who lost a vibrant member Ramsey Ugele solicited for Nigerians support to lead the team to successes.

    “It is beg that I am begging every Nigerian especially, you the press guys. You must support us to succeed so that we avoid what happened with the Super Eagles that failed to qualify for next year’s Nations Cup.

    “We are not resting at all in searching for the right kind of players. We will not rest until we see the players we are looking for. And I can tell you that we have made serious progress and by the time the elimination begins we should have gotten the best players,” he said.

    The Dream Team V1 have been engaged in series of friendly matches with some Abuja based football clubs and have so far won all the matches. The team would be taking on newly promoted club to the Nigeria Premier League, Wikki Tourist of Bauchi in yet another friendly match in Bauchi in December 11, 2014.

    Samson Siasia will be hoping to repeat the feat he achieved when he led the then Nation’s U-23 team to winning silver at the football event of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Before then he led the Nation’s U-20 team to winning silver at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands.

    Dream Team have been undergoing screening of players in Abuja ahead of the 2015 All Africa Games and the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

    The Nigeria Olympic Team coach, Samson Siasia, has expressed confidence with the quality displayed in the screening process by some players invited to the team’s camp.

    Siasia and other members of his technical crew have continued to juggle players in camp, but those that came in from academies and the Premier League have been applauded by the head coach for showing hunger and zeal to do the nation proud in the various competitions the team will be involved in next year.

    “Getting the best legs to play for the country is work in progress, and so far I am impressed with what I have seen from those who have made themselves available for screening,” Siasia told sl10.ng.

    The coach said the technical crew would try and prune down the number in camp by December 5 in order to concentrate on the invited foreign based players who are expected to arrive camp by December 7.

    Monday’s evening screening session was watched by Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, the Deputy General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation and Alhassan Yakmut of the National Sports Commission.
