Owner of Mercy Aigbe’s birthday dress angry, as designer claims dispatch error

The ongoing drama on the red dress worn by actress Mercy Aigbe on her 40th birthday is yet to abate, as the excuse preferred by the designer, @Rikaotobyme, has only heightened anger.

The designer, who had been quiet since the allegation, attempted an excuse late Tuesday, blaming the problem on dispatch error.

She wrote on Instagram: “Our attention has been drawn to the ongoing chaos surrounding a dress and one of our esteemed clients on Instagram and possibly on other blogs and social media sites,” said @rikaotobyme.

“We would have preferred if this matter was addressed directly to us for a quick resolution and to avoid the media frenzy, but unfortunately it wasn’t.

“We hold our clients dearly and offer our services on first come first served bases with no iota of discrimination or insinuation of such. We admit that a dispatch error occurred in the delivery of a dress to Miss Lawrentta, who was set to get married on the 30th December, 2017 and the pickup of another dress on behalf of actress, Mercy Aigbe.

“Please note that both dresses were of the same style, the same colour (red) and almost the same measurement. On realising the error on dispatch, we quickly tried to rectify the mix up. But it was too late as the wrong dress was already on its way to Edo state for the bride to be, she further explained.

“We contacted the bride and explained we had an issue and asked if she would be comfortable with another dress, of same kind (which was the one meant for Mercy Aigbe), the bride agreed, so we allowed the dress to be delivered as time to recall dispatch was short in relation to the time of the wedding. We have already apologised to Miss Lawrentta, but once again use the public fora to tender an unreserved apology to her and by extension to Mercy Aigbe who shouldn’t have been dragged into this.

“We assure all our clients, past and future that our resolve to deliver top notch designs to clients within the country and beyond will not be compromised and the error that led to this unhappy situation has since been corrected.”

However, it was obvious the designer’s response did not placate the bride, who tagged the designer wicked, and went ahead to dismiss her claim by asking further questions.

“Reading your reply @rikaotobyme to the pain and embarrassment you deliberately caused me for financial profit on the eve of and on my wedding day, I am convinced that you are indeed wicked, A wickedness that has consequences.” Lawrentta said.

“Firstly, in your response you claim there was a dispatch error. Was the error of dispatch the cause of the delivery agent’s number being “not reachable” as you claimed? Secondly, you also claimed the “dispatch error” was too late to be rectified as the wrong dress was already on the way to Edo state. At what point was the “dispatch error” discovered since your staff Kate, dropped off the dress at Ojota at around 9pm for night bus delivery?

“Thirdly you claimed also that similarities in the dresses caused the “mixup”. If that was the case why did @realmercyaigbe on receipt of a dress that wasn’t hers still go ahead to wear it for her 40th birthday shoot and post on social media on the 31st of December?”

According to Lawrentta, the wrong dress which was eventually delivered to her was not in any way new.

“Mind you, the dress you sent to me was torn and musty on delivery, not in any shape for a client how much more a celebrity. While that which conveniently landed with Mercy Aigbe, was a fabric I purchased myself from @bshani_bridalfabrics. Lastly in your response, you lied about apologizing to me. Since the 29th I have not heard a single word from you and there is not a chance in hell that what you called an apology on “public fora” or the chat above would suffice.  In all of this, it’s blatantly obvious from your statement you have refused to accept responsibility like a true professional should and sincerely apologize for your moment of indiscretion and weakness.”

Actress Mercy Aigbe has however remained silent in the ongoing drama.

  • Dress indecently risk expulsion, Rector tells students

Any student of the Polytechnic, Ibadan who is found guilty of violating the institution’s dress code  would either be suspended or totally expelled from the institution, the Rector Prof Olatunde Fawole has warned.

Fawole made this submission during the 2016/2017 matriculation for newly admitted National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students of the institution, held at the new Lecture theatre of the institution.

He noted that a Task Force has been inaugurated to enforce the dress code law

Fawole said of the 65,633 candidates that applied for both ND and HND courses in the institution, only 5,790 students were picked.

He said management has set a standard dress code that is available in the student’s handbook, hence any student found guilty of violating the rules would face the music.

Fawole said: “The Polytechnic Ibadan posses a unique image which we cherish dearly and that continues to rub on its products. This image has not come by chance but was earned through dint of hard work, dedication to duty and a strong sense of discipline among staff and students. To this end, the institution would not compromise its hard-earned impressive image for any damaging misconduct from any student.

“It is instructive to let you know that any student who flouts this dress code shall be warned at the first instance, while subsequent defiance could result in suspension for one or two semesters or outright expulsion, as the case may be.

“A task force has been inaugurated to conduct periodic search into lecture theatres, hostels, entrance gates etc to fish out any deviant student. Your morality must not be questionable as The Polytechnic Ibadan would not award its diploma certificate to any student that lacks moral. We believe that education without morals is null. And void.

Thereafter, he assured the students that all programmes in the institution have been accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), as well as other relevant professional bodies.

  • Thief belittles Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar dress

Thief belittles Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar dress

    •Returns outfit, says it’s fake

Until the dress got missing and was returned by the anonymous thief, the white custom Calvin Klein gown Lupita wore to present J. K. Simmons’s Best Supporting Actor, at the just-concluded Academy Awards, was one of the biggest stories of the show.

It caused more stirs as police were flustered as to how her Oscar dress escaped detection when it was taken from her hotel room, but soon discovered it was thrown off her balcony.

TMZ reported that the cameras weren’t trained on Lupita’s door and none of the cameras on the floor showed anything suspicious.

The guy who stole the dress had called the news medium, Friday, with a road map to its recovery in The London West Hollywood bathroom where the 12 Years a Slave actress had lodged. The thief said he knew where the cameras were placed in the hallway so he was never seen. As for the dress, he claimed he threw it over the balcony and someone on the ground picked it up.

On why he returned the dress, the thief said he took two of the pearls off the dress and down to the Garment District for appraisal, but found they were worthless. He then decided to return the dress.

According to the thief, he regretted not taking Lupita’s Oscar gift bag instead, which he valued at $125,000.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles sheriff’s spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said the dress found on Friday afternoon at a West Hollywood hotel “greatly resembles” the pearl-adorned Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa dress Nyong’o wore to the Academy Awards.

She said detectives are attempting to verify the recovered dress is the same one Nyong’o wore.

Encrusted with 6,000 white Akoya pearls, Fortune estimated it was worth $150,000.

  • Upgrading your dress sense

    Upgrading your dress sense

THE truth is there are dozens of quicker and easier ways to look better and stylish with  minimum effort. Scroll through these simple, ready-to-impress tips for instantly upping your style.

Match your accessories-This may sound overly simple, but for God’s sake, remember to match your belt with your shoes.

Lock down your collar-Nothing ruins a suit set-up faster than collar points that fly away. The simple addition of a five cent collar stay is the easiest and cheapest way to keep it together.

Carry a silk handkerchief-A few items are as versatile, or as effortlessly stylish as an actual handkerchief. It’s a subtle and simple touch, and it can be used for your schnoz, for dabbing away someone’s tears, for mopping your brow, or for wiping up the sweat rings left on your desk by that afternoon scotch.

Change the basics-Take a long look at the staples in your wardrobe like the simple white oxford. Then flip the script subtly. Use a spread collar as an alternative to a button-dow or try a denim shirt with snaps instead of buttons

Always choose quality fabric-As important as a tailor is, quality fabric matters. Also, knowing how you prefer your personal fit will help your tailor achieve the results you want.

Invest in a leather jacket-Almost every outfit can be upgraded easily with the addition of a well-fitted black leather jacket.

Pick practical accessories-Less is more with accessories. That means opting for items that are functional rather than just ornamental or a tie bar to hold a tie in place and a faz cap for casual.

  • Dress Code!

There is much to support the view that it is clothes that wear us, and not we, them; we may make them take the mould of arm or breast, but they mould our hearts, our brains, our tongues to their liking.”

These are the words of Virginia Woolf, a British novelist and essayist who lived between 1882 and 1941. It is pointless to argue against the fact that our dressing reflects who we are. As a public speaker, people must first get past your looks before they allow your ideas to get to them. We know first impressions are not always correct but only few people go beyond it to find out who the real person is.

Thomas Fuller, a British clergyman and author said, “Good clothes open all doors”. If you are not sure it opens “all” doors, I can at least assure you that it opens a lot of doors. There are specific dresses appropriate for specific places but there is something they all have in common- decency. It is very important for you to represent the ideas you advocate. I have the pleasure of sharing with you a book I read on the subject of dress code, as it relates to general values. Interestingly, it is a play and it paints a clear picture of our struggle between what we desire and what is right. Here is a brief profile of the playwright:

    Dr. Goke Okeowo

Dr. Goke Okeowo is a Chief Lecturer at the Federal College of Education, Okene. With a degree in English, and Masters and Ph.D degrees in Guidance and Counselling, Dr. Okeowo is multi-talented, being a teacher, an author, a playwright, a poet, a music evangelist and a counselling psychologist. Apart from his scholarly publications in national and international journals, he has also published other works such as Obatala, god of creation (a drama) and Orthopaedic Princess (a collection of poetry and anecdotes). This award winning educational administrator and trainer is also a Fellow of the Civilian Institute of Democratic Administration of Ghana (FCIDA-Ghana). I present to you the play titled…

    Dress Code My Arse!

The play focuses on the journey of a young university fresher, Adesewa. She comes from a god-fearing and disciplined family. The first experience of Adesewa at the Wazobia University is that of culture shock because one of her roommates, Jovita, has a notorious dress sense that is reflective of a lot of other students on campus. Not long after the session begins, the Student Union starts to prepare to elect its officials, having three major contestants for the post of the President- Bature, John Bull and Lukeman Orlando. Unfortunately, the campus cult group prefers Orlando, not because  he is currently a member, but because they believe they can use him to fight their battles, particularly the “stupid dress code” rule that the university management is about to introduce. At a Student Union Congress, the contestants declare their manifestoes but the cultists help Orlando to win. The aftermath of the victory is that the cult starts to operate freely on campus. The most significant of its operations is the attack on the Association of Campus Moralists (ACM) that is fully in support of the dress code rule, with Adesewa as a prominent member. Finally, Orlando’s actions backfire and an impeachment process begins against him. After losing everything, he seeks the help of a counselor who helps him to put the pieces of his life together. In the mean time, Adesewa is seen as a model of what a responsible student should be.

    Significant Points

Apart from the fact that the play is quite engaging, I find some things to be particularly relevant to public speaking:

    1. Dress Code: a wise man said the way you dress is the way you will be addressed. Your image is a major part of your credibility. As a public speaker, never dress to impress or distract; rather, let your dress complement your message. Your message is what you want your listeners to hear, but your life is what they want to see.

    2. Effective Communication: while delivering the manifestoes in the play, I noticed that the three contestants exhibited three different traits. Bature is incoherent and unsure of himself. He stammers, not because of his nature, but because he is tensed and scared. Not only does he use quotes he is not sure of, some are even out of context. And have I mentioned that he has little control over his emotions? After getting frustrated because people are not favourable towards him, he abuses them all and stamps off the stage. John Bull’s presentation is intelligent and well presented. His challenges, however, include his speech being too long. Lukeman Orlando says nothing in particular, but he uses heavy grammar and lofty expressions that blow the people away. He is careful not to promise anything but the audience is too carried away by the grammar to notice.

The Foreword of the play Dress Code My Arse! was written by Professor Ayo Akinwale, a lecturer in the Department of Performing Arts, University of Ilorin, a veteran actor and a renowned theatre director. He stated that youths should not throw away the African culture in their contact with Euro-American cultures especially in the area of dressing. He observed that unfortunately, youths overlook the decent manner of dressing in the West just to copy the indecent and shoddy ones. After recommending the play to parents and students, he said, “I hereby recommend this play to institutions of higher learning and to the Nigerian Government as a play for the WAEC or NECO examinations, so that our children could learn a thing or two.”

  • Chivita wears new dress

    Chivita wears new dress

Makers of Chivita, Chi Limited, has launched a new pack of the product, renaming it from Chivita Premium to Chivita 100 %. At the launch of the new Chivita 100% in Lagos, the company said every consumer is expected to embrace because the new trendy, modern and elegant packaging delivers a supreme lesson in brand messaging.

Speaking on the new design, Managing Director of Chi Limited, makers of fruit juices, Mr. Roy Deepanjan said the packaging changeover is the company’s way of injecting fresh energy into the brand so that it can take its pride of place on market shelves and in households, from living rooms to event halls and in the lives of consumers who cherish healthy living.

“Chivita 100%, which can be enjoyed by consumers who desire pure, healthy and natural refreshment is available in five variants of real pineapple, real apple, real orange, orange pineapple and orange mango,” Deepanjan said, adding that “in an effort to avail Chivita 100% with more levels of engagement with the consumer, the website address, Facebook page, Twitter handle and LinkedIn contact addresses are featured on the pack.”

To further drive the consumer’s attraction to Chivita 100%, the variant name now appears as ‘Real Orange’ or ‘Real Apple’ on the pack as opposed to simply writing Orange or Apple. The interactive design features visual elements such as the “shake well” symbol as well as a “variant wheel” that reflects all other variants of the brand.

Truly, in an increasingly health conscious society, consumers are most likely to choose a brand that lays emphasis on natural ingredients instead of products containing synthetic or genetically modified components. The visual architecture of the brand is even more endearing.

Nonetheless, the challenge of communicating a clear and effective brand message that will instantly resonate with consumers has always been an intimidating task for brand managers. This is because very few brands are able to effectively match the message with each and every component of their brand or product.

Experts say that operating in a challenging economy like Nigeria where marketing a brand is a complex and highly competitive task hence, finding a clear message that works with the consumer may be the most difficult part of building a brand identity. That is why Chivita recently solidified its market leadership by renaming Chivita to reflect the most crucial idea at the heart of the brand, which is the 100% pure fruit juice that contains no added sugar, no preservative and no added colours.

Since brand messaging is about capturing the right language that embodies a brand so that it stands out from the pack, it must be simple, short and, above all, memorable. For effectiveness, it must also parade instantly attractive packaging. This was why boldly written along the length of the new pack is ‘100% Fruit Juice’ while ‘No Added Sugar’ is placed at the heart of the design and written in clear language to give the information greater prominence than before.

Indeed, behind the Chivita’s title, the package design, and the ad campaigns, is a strong, simple message that effectively communicates the core value of Chivita fruit juice as a pure and natural drink.
