  • Driver charged with N752,000 bread theft

    A 35-year-old driver, Shina Abiala, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing loaves of bread valued N752,000.

    Abiala is standing trial before Magistrate T. O. Ojo.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Kendrich Nomayo said the accused committed the offence on August 22 at Oregun, Ikeja.

    Nomayo alleged that the defendant, a sales representative with Food Concept Pioneer Limited, stolen bread of different sizes.

    The defendant, he said, was asked to deliver the bread to a customer in Ogun State, but he diverted the supply to another customer and converted the proceeds to personal use.

    He said the customer, who did not get her supply called the company to complain.

    The defendant, the prosecutor said, confessed on being questioned and was handed over to the police.

    Abiala pleaded not-guilty.

    Magistrate Ojo granted him N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    Mrs Ojo said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment.

    She adjourned till September 27.

  • Driver to sweep courtroom for biting policeman’s nose

    In Igbosere Magistrates’ Court yesterday sentenced a bus driver, Jamiu Adeoye, to a one-day community service for biting a police officer’s nose and chest.

    Magistrate A. M. Davies convicted Adeoye, 31, after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of unlawful assault.

    She ordered him to sweep the court’s premises for a day.

    The convict was arraigned by the police on August 13.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji said Adeoye committed the offence on August 9 at 7:40pm at P and T, Obalende, Lagos.

    The court heard that the complainant, Inspector Joseph Tirven, tried to stop Adeoye from flouting traffic laws but the driver got angry and attacked the officer.

    “He unlawfully assaulted the complainant, Inspector Joseph Tirven, by biting his nose and chest,” Osuji said.

    Adeoye pleaded not guilty.

    The court granted him N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum. They are to show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government. But he could not meet the bail conditions.

    At the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, Adeoye changed his plea to guilty.

  • Gunmen kill two policemen, driver in Rivers

    •Hoodlums abduct expatriate

    Gunmen have killed three persons and abducted another around Woji community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

    The victims are said to be two policemen and a driver in the convoy of a foreigner, who was also abducted by the bandits.

    Eyewitnesses said the kidnappers ambushed the convoy on Akom Road, shot and killed the policemen and the driver.

    A resident Rachel Reginald said the gunmen abducted the foreigner after the shooting at 9.47 p.m on Wednesday.

    This happened barely 12 days after two soldiers, a policeman and a driver were killed in Abua Local Government Area while attempting to foil the abduction of an expatriate.

    But their target escaped.

    Reginald said two passers-by sustained bullet wounds in the shooting, which lasted about 15 minutes.

    Police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the death of the two policemen. He said another victim was recuperating in hospital.

    The spokesman denied any abduction.

    Omoni regretted that the hoodlums carried out a surprise attack on the police team.

    He said the command had intensified the search for the perpetrators to bring them to justice.

     

  • Accident kills magistrate, son, relation, driver

    Magistrate Banji Ayeomoni of Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State, his son Dara, another relation and his driver were reported dead in an inferno caused by a petrol tanker spillage in Ekpoma.

    An official of the court, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday the incident happened on Friday night close to Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma.

    The official said that the late Ayeomoni went to visit his children at Ekpoma, adding that while returning his vehicle ran into the petrol spillage of a tanker which caused fire and other vehicles behind were also affected.

    The source added that the Magistrate, Dara, who is a 500 level student of Medicine of Ambrose Alli University, Akpoma, a young boy of the deceased wife’s sister and the driver died at an undisclosed hospital shortly after the accident.

    “We heard that the late Magistrate went to visit his children at AAU when the incident occurred through a petrol tanker oil spillage, which claimed their lives.

    “It was indeed very sad news to all members of staff and lawyers in our court,’’ the source said. The court prosecutor, Inspector Zedekiah Orogbemi, who also confirmed the incident, said that he was shocked when he got the news.

    The 59 year-old Magistrate, who was due for retirement next year, left behind his wife and two other children.

  • Driver allegedly robs his former boss

    A dismissed driver, Solomon James, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly robbing his former boss, Utchay Odims.

    The incident occurred, about 8 pm, on July 21, at 382, Ademola Ajasa Street, Omole Estate.

    James claimed he only wanted to inform Odims’ wife about his extra-marital affairs.

    The police said the suspect had the intention of defiling the victim’s wife, who, fortunately, was not at home.

    A source said last Saturday, the suspect reportedly scaled the fence of the victim’s house, entered, tied the maid and the man before robbing him.

    James said: “I ordered the maid to tie her boss. Then I tied her. I asked my former boss who else was in the house, he said no one, as his wife had gone to church. I said I would have loved her to be around so that she would witness what I was doing.

    “I did not go there with the intention of harming anyone. I wanted the wife to be around because I wanted to expose her husband. When I was his driver, he engaged in extramarital affairs with university girls.

    “That was what I wanted to reveal to her. I told him ‘since your wife is not here, I cannot go home empty-handed’. I told him to give me something and he said he had little cash at home. He tried to make transfer, but the network was bad.

    “So, I asked him to give me the money in the house. We went to his room and he gave me the money. He did not recognise me because I wore a face mask. I asked for his ATM and pin since he could not transfer money to my account. I asked for his car to drive out and I promised to drop it where he would locate it.

    “I asked for the original documents of the car. Initially, I did not come to rob him, but it ended up being a robbery.

    “I did it because he refused to pay me. The agreement was that he would pay me N80,000 per month, but he couldn’t afford it and reduced it to N5,000 each time I drove him.”

    Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said James was arrested while trying to escape.

    He said: “The suspect jumped the fence and was trying to escape, but operatives nabbed him.

    “The complainant said he forced himself into his house and demanded his ATM card. He said the suspect became aggressive when he could not transfer the money due to network failure and he forced him to surrender his car key and original documents.

    “The suspect asked for the victim’s wife, with the intention to defile her, but luckily she was not at home. He collected N38,000.

    “When the operatives got to the scene, the suspect jumped the fence, but he was arrested.”

  • Court sentences driver to eight months imprisonment for forgery

    A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a 35-year-old driver, Umar Aliyu, to eight months imprisonment for forgery and impersonation.

    The magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, convicted Aliyu on a two-count charge of forgery and impersonation.

    The magistrate said that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

    He, however, gave ‎the convict, a resident of Bindi village, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara, an option to pay N15, 000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crime.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the convict was first arraigned on Feb 12 and he had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Moses Leo, had told the court that a team of policemen on duty along Jere/Kagarko Road, Kaduna, arrested the defendant on Feb. 1.

    Leo said at about 9.00p.m, a team of policemen on duty stopped the defendant’s vehicle for a search and found two car engines in the vehicle.

    He said that when the defendant was asked questions about the car engines, he identified himself as a police officer.

    Leo said that a police warrant card was also found in his possession and during police investigation, all information given by the defendant was discovered to be false.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 142 and 345 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State.

  • Driver faces N4.5m car theft

    A 40-year-old driver, Morris Udoh, who allegedly ran away with a Toyota Camry car valued at N4.5 million given to him on hired purchase, was on Wednesday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court.

    Udoh, who resides at No. 12 Simisola St., Surulere, Lagos, is facing a charge of theft.

    The prosecutor, ASP Fidelis Dike, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 16, about 10.00 a.m at Victoria Garden City, Lekki, Lagos.

    He said that the accused stole a Toyota Camry with Registration No. LND-280 EF valued at N4.5 million, property of Mrs Patience Odamo.

    Dike said that Odamo gave the accused the vehicle on hired purchase to pay on a weekly instalment of N40,000.

    “The week Udoh collected the vehicle, he vanished with it, he could not be reached through his phone and he was not at his apartment.

    “He was later traced and caught through the help of the police.

    “After he was apprehended he has not been able to give the police the account of what happened to the vehicle and its location,” he said.

    The offence contravenes Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, carrying three years imprisonment for anyone found guilty.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and the Magistrate, Mr Omolaja Kazeem, granted him N500, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    Kazeem said that the two sureties must be gainfully employed; adding that one of them must be relative of the accused and the other, a civil servant.

    Further hearing in the case has been fixed for Aug. 9.

  • Abducted Ondo monarch’s wife, driver freed

    •No word on ransom

    The abducted wife of the Alauga of Auga in Akoko Northeast Local Government Area of Ondo State, Olori Olukemi Agunloye, and her driver, Abudu Mumuni, have regained their freedom from their captors.

    They were seized last Sunday on the Auga-Ise road while travelling to Ugbe Akoko for a family meeting.

    The duo shared their ordeals in captivity, saying they drank water reserved for cows.

    Olori Agunloye said she received occasional beating and harassment while in hunger strike for three days.

    The Alauga of Auga thanked God for sparing his wife’s life.

    The Nation reports that the driver had become tired and fragile as doctors attended to him and the Olori.

    Oba Agunloye lauded Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s concern on the matter and express appreciation to the police, the Army, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media for showing concern about the incident.

    He called for rehabilitation of Akoko roads, saying criminals used the failed portion for their nefarious acts.

    Oba Agunloye urged the government to provide police with vehicles and other tools for effective patrol.

    The Police Area Commander for Akoko, Razak Rauf, was accompanied by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Ikare, Mohamed Mahe, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

    They assured the public of their safety.

    The police officers said the command was trailing the perpetrators of the abduction, assuring that they will be caught.

    The chairman of Akoko Northeast Local Government Area, Rafiu Eniayewu, urged indigenes to desist from hosting strangers without security alertness, particularly when they are many.

    He added that the state government was doing a lot to repair Akoko roads, like Ikare to Ugbe, while that of Akunu, Ikaram, Afin, Okeagbe will begin soon.

    There was silence yesterday on the ransom paid to secure the release of the abducted monarch’s wife and the driver was.

    But Olori Agunloye said the hoodlums stole a huge amount of money, handsets, jewellery and credentials from her and Abudu Mumuni.

     

  • Police arrest driver for alleged beer theft

    The police in Lagos have arrested a company driver for allegedly stealing 143 cartons of beer valued at N10.3 million.

    The suspect, Dominic Nege, was said to have diverted a truck with registration number (Lagos) JJJ-873-XJ, containing the beer he was asked to deliver at Mammy Market in Bonny Camp on Victoria Island.

    It was gathered that the suspect committed the offence on March 14, barely one month after he was recruited by his employer, Rabel Nigeria Limited.

    Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said Nege was arrested on June 11 in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, where he fled to after committing the offence.

    Edgal said he led detectives to Sangotedo in Ibeju-Lekki, where the suspects allegedly abandoned the truck after disposing the cartons of beer.

    He said: “Sometime in February, Dominic Nege approached Rabel Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary and distributor to International Breweries, the manufacturer of Trophy Lager beer, for employment as a driver. He was profiled by the company but he provided false information, including a fake address. The same goes with his guarantor.

    “Having secured the employment, the company, on March 14, sent him to Mammy Market in Bonny Camp on Victoria Island. After loading 143 crates of Trophy bottles with liquid contents valued at N10.3 million, the suspect diverted the goods to an unknown destination and switched off his phone.

    “Investigation into the matter commenced immediately. The intelligence component of the command was mobilised to assist operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) with necessary information.

    “Efforts to arrest the suspect paid off on June 11 when he was traced to Makurdi in Benue State. During interrogation, the suspect led detectives to Sangotedo in Ibeju Lekki, where the Mitsubushi Canter truck was abandoned after he had disposed the goods.

    “Investigation is ongoing.”

  • Driver kills woman accountant in suspected rape bid

    A company driver, identified as Abiodun Idowu, 40, has allegedly killed a female worker, Ms Abimbola Hamzat, during an alleged attempt to forcefully sleep with her.

    The incident was said to have occurred on May 29 in a pure and table water factory at the Onipanu corridor of Ota, the industrial town in Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

    Ms Hamzat, 38, was the accountant of the water-packaging factory.

    It was learnt that Idowu, who had been labouring to woo the lady for romantic affairs without success, resumed work on the fateful day and met her alone in the factory.

    The suspect allegedly pounced on the unsuspecting lady in an attempt to overpower her and have his way.

    Ms Hamzat reportedly struggled to free herself from him but Idowu strangled her to death in the attempt to force her to the ground.

    It was learnt that the suspect attempted to drink a mixture of Izal liquid disinfectant and Hypo bleach.

    The concoction knocked him out.

    Detectives, who were there to arrest him, found him unconscious and rushed him to a hospital, where he was revived.

    In a statement yesterday in Abeokuta, the state capital, police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said the suspected was arrested following a complaint lodged by the owner of the factory, Owolabi Moses.

    The businessman was said to have reported the incident at the Onipanu Division of the Ogun State Police Command.

    The statement said: “The arrest of the suspect followed a complaint by Owolabi Moses, who reported at Onipanu divisional headquarters, that the suspect, who is a driver in his pure water factory, had been disturbing the deceased, who was an accountant in the same factory, for a love affair of which the deceased had been refusing his advances.

    “He stated that on that fateful day, the deceased was alone in the factory when the suspect came in and attempted to forcefully have carnal knowledge of her. While the victim was struggling with him, he strangled her to death.

    “On the strength of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Onipanu Division, Sangobiyi Johnson, led detectives to the scene where they met the suspect unconscious. Investigation revealed that the suspect, having realised that he had committed a serious crime, attempted to kill himself by drinking Hypo and Izal.
