  • The Match in Lagos Next Year: Weah, Drogba, 19 former African stars expected

Twenty-one African football legends including Didier Drogba and Liberian President, George Weah, have been selected to participate in ‘The Match: A Celebration of Excellence in Sport’ project scheduled to hold March 16, 2019.

Some of the other former stars of the Beautiful Game in the continent who have been approached to join in extolling the giant strides made by Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, include Senegal’s El -Hajj Diouf, Drogba’s former Elephants teammate, Kolo Toure, Ghanaian duo of Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah. Former French star, Christian Karembu is also on the card to storm Lagos.

From the home front, ex internationals like Samson Siasia, Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Joseph Yobo, Julius Aghahowa and several others have been listed to participate in the African All-Stars versus Nigerian Legends.

Speaking at a media parley in Lagos yesterday to announce the project, Waidi Akanni, who along with Samson Siasia are the chief architects of The Match, said Gov Ambode had made laudable sports development in Lagos that he is worth celebrating.

“As internationals, we have seen the infrastructural developments in Lagos under Gov Ambode. The Onikan Stadium that has been abandoned over the years is under reconstruction to meet FIFA standard. Teslim Balogun Stadium is undergoing similar reconstruction while the Agege and Epe Stadiums are in fantastic shape not to talk of the Maracana Sports complex in Ajegunle. These and other laudable efforts of Gov Ambode in providing sports infrastructure, we believe, are aimed at providing the enabling environment for youths to thrive and achieve their dreams in sports,” explained the former Super Eagles player.

Akanni further hinted that part of the proceeds from the event will go into supporting families of distressed ex Nigerian international players.

“If you go around, you will see several former footballers who served this country in several capacities but unable to meet up in life. We will support their children’s education where ever possible.”

A representative of Drogba who flew into Lagos for the media session lauded the project of celebrating African former legends and urged organizers of the project to provide adequate security and logistics for the invited former African stars.

Present at the event which held at the Regent Hotel inside Ikeja GRA were former Green Eagles captain, Henry Nwosu, Tajudeen Disu and Ifeanyi Udeze.

  • FIFA: Amuneke, Drogba Others to Pick World Best Player

Federation of International Football (FIFA) on Wednesday named former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke among the 12-man panel that will shortlist candidates for the men’s footballers and coaches of the year for the 2017/18 season.

The World Football governing body also named former African footballer and Ivory Coast ex-player Didier Drogba, as a member of the panel for the annual awards of the round leather game.

The men’s panel also includes legends Ronaldo, Fabio Capello and Frank Lampard, and Kaka amongst others.

The judges will shortlist 10 candidates for each category, which will be unveiled on 23 July 2018 – with a public vote opening on the same day.

Football fans, national team captains, head coaches and more than 200 media representatives will then cast their votes to decide who will be crowned the best players and coaches in the men’s and women’s games from last season.

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia currently showcasing the finest footballing talent on the planet, the race for the Best FIFA Football Awards is even more intense and the showpiece event will take on added significance when it returns to London for a second time on 24 September 2018.

At last year’s awards, Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the Best Men’s Player Award, Netherlands’ Lieke Martens was crowned Best Women’s Player, French icon Zinédine Zidane was named Best Men’s Coach and the Netherlands’ Sarina Wiegman was Best Women’s Coach.

Separate panels will shortlist candidates for the Best FIFA Goalkeeper Award, the FIFA Puskás Award and the FIFA Fan Award, with the winner of the Best FIFA Goalkeeper Award chosen by a panel of FIFA Legends.

In recognition and celebration of the essential role played by football fans in the game, the FIFA Fan Award, an appreciation of memorable moments created by fans, is voted for by supporters.

The FIFA Puskás Award, handed out to the player judged to have scored the best goal of the year, is also determined by fans’ votes.

The voting process for the men’s and women’s awards will open on July 23 and close on August 10.

FIFA will announce the final list of the three nominees for each of the four categories listed above – as well as for the FIFA Puskás Award, the FIFA Fan Award and the Best FIFA Goalkeeper Award – in September.

Adi, Drogba nominated for MLS award

NIGERIAN MLS wonder kid , Fanendo Adi has been nominated for the MLS player of the month award for the month of October 2015 .

Adi was yesterday nominated along side former African player of the year,  Ivorian  Didier Drogba and three other players .

Drogba , former Chelsea point man joined the MLS at the end of last season for an undisclosed amount for a deal that is viewed by many soccer fans across Africa as a pre retirement contract considering his age .

However , the Nigerian centre forward , Fanendo Adi , joined his MLS side Portland Timbers FC from FC Copenhagen of Denmark mid season last year scoring 12 goals on his debut season , this season Adi made a personal target to surpass his last season achievement which he has actualised already by scoring 16 goals this term from the regular season which ended last Sunday .

Adi’s goals has contributed immensely in helping to qualify his moderate MLS side Portland Timbers for the American play off’s which is  due to start this weekend .

However, Adi is not done with his best with the club yet , he is looking forward at winning more laurels for club which is  his main objective at the moment .

  • Drogba: I’ll be at Chelsea next season

Drogba: I’ll be at Chelsea next season

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba says he will remain at the club next season, despite his current deal expiring in the summer.

The 36-year-old returned to Stamford Bridge in July after stints with Shanghai Shenhua and Galatasaray, signing a one-year contract with the Blues.

Drogba has made 27 appearances, many as a substitue, in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s men this season and says he is happy to continue in west London.

“My project for next year will be on a pitch with Chelsea,” he told Telefoot.

Drogba was left out of Chelsea’s starting line-up for the clash with Manchester City on Saturday, despite Diego Costa’s suspension, featuring only as a late substitute as the Blues drew with Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Loic Remy was preferred to the Ivorian and scored the opening goal of the game, but Drogba says he has no problems with the decision to start him on the bench.

“He played a great game against City. That shows that he is resourceful,” he added.

“We’ve showed that we can present a strong offensive force despite the absentees.

“It’s obvious that I would like to play, but I’m not miserable.”

  • Drogba doubtful for Burnley trip

Didier Drogba hopes to be fit for Chelsea’s opening game of the Premier League season after hobbling out of the victory over Ferencvaros.

The striker, making his second appearance since rejoining the club, only played 29 minutes during Sunday’s friendly in Budapest before being substituted with an ankle injury.

Without the Ivorian, Chelsea went to beat their Hungarian opponents 2-1 thanks to goals from midfield duo Ramires and Cesc Fabregas.

Chelsea begin their league campaign with a trip to Burnley next Monday, but Drogba has suggested he may not be available as he awaits further news on his injury.

“I twisted my ankle and I couldn’t continue,” he told the club’s official website.

“In the next few days we are going to do some treatment and I hope everything will be better.”

Drogba made a sensational return to Stamford Bridge last month after being released from his contract at Turkish club Galatasaray.

During his first spell in England the Ivorian scored 157 goals in 341 appearances and collected three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups.

  • King Drogba returns

    King Drogba returns

Speculation about Didier Drogba returning to Chelsea was finally laid to rest yesterday after the Ivorian hitman rejoined the Blues on a one-year deal.

The Ivorian, 36, won 10 trophies at Chelsea from 2004 to 2012 and was a free agent after leaving Galatasaray.

Manager Jose Mourinho had earlier said the forward “belongs” at Stamford Bridge – but that any deal would be made “in a non-emotional way”.

Drogba told Chelsea’s official site: “It was an easy decision – I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to work with Jose again.”

He said: “Everyone knows the special relationship I have with this club and it has always felt like home to me.

“My desire to win is still the same and I look forward to the opportunity to help this team. I am excited for this next chapter of my career.”

Drogba  Drogba wrote on his Instagram account: “So CFC offered me the opportunity to create more history with these guys – how could I say no? Thanks to the club and can’t wait to see the fans again.”

The Ivory Coast international was voted Chelsea’s greatest ever player in a poll of fans in 2012 and has spoken of his close ties to the Blues.

His 34 goals for Chelsea in European competition remains a club record, as do his nine strikes in nine cup finals.

Mourinho had previously said: “If you bring him back it is not because he is Didier or scored the most important goal in the history of Chelsea, or because I need an assistant, no.

“We want to win matches and win titles and Didier is one of the best strikers in Europe. He is still very adapted to the needs of the Premier League and we are thinking about it in a non-emotional way.”

He joins Fernando Torres, new signing Diego Costa, as well as Romelu Lukaku and Victor Moses, who both spent last season out on loan, as striking options at Stamford Bridge.

However, there have been diverse opinions since Drogba embarked on his second journey to the Stamford Bridge side with some arguing that the once dreaded marksman may have reached the twiligth of his career.

If the school of thought that Drogba is already finished is to be upheld, then the example that readily comes to mind is his unimpressive outing at the just concluded Brazil 2014 World Cup where his national team, the Elephants of Cote d’Ívoire failed to advance beyond the first round.

In Drogba’s absence, Chelsea have struggled to discover a striker in his mode who has the penchant to determine the outcome of crucial matches.

It was erroneously interpreted by many fans of the club that Fernando Torres was overshadowed by the towering figure of Drogba when both strikers played for the side.

When Drogba eventually left, Torres, who was phenomenal at Liverpool, failed to emerge from Drogba’s shadow when the striker’s mantle was thrown at him.

Last season, it was an open secret that Mourinho felt disenchanted with the conversion rates of Torres and Samuel Eto.

Apart from acting as a formidable striking partner to Spanish super star, Diego Costa, Drogba’s second coming is also expected to ease the mental pressure on the former Atletico Madrid forward.

That Drogba signed a one-year contract with Chelsea was an indication that both parties did not rule out the possibilty that the striker may become unable to cope with the intensity of the English Premier League even though his experience could prove to be invaluable.

Drogba was born on 11 March 1978 and is the all-time top scorer of the Ivory Coast national team. He has scored more goals at Chelsea than any other foreign player and is currently the club’s fourth highest goal scorer of all time. In October 2012, he was voted by Chelsea supporters as the club’s greatest ever player. His key attributes include his physical strength, ability in the air, and his ability to retain possession of the ball.

After playing in youth teams, Drogba made his professional debut aged 18 for Ligue 2 club Le Mans. A late bloomer, he signed his first professional contract aged 21; it was not until the 2002–03 season that he realised his potential, scoring 17 goals in 34 appearances in Ligue 1 for Guingamp. He moved to Olympique de Marseille in 2003 for £3.3 million. His scoring success at Marseille continued, finishing as the third highest scorer in Ligue 1 with 19 goals and helped the club to reach the 2004 UEFA Cup Final.

In the summer of 2004, Drogba moved to Chelsea for a club record £24 million fee, making him the most expensive Ivorian player in history.

In his debut season he helped the club win their first league title in 50 years, and a year later he won another Premier League title. In 2006–07, Drogba scored 33 goals, won the Premier League Golden Boot and scored the winning goals in both the League Cup and FA Cup finals.

He won the FA Cup for a second time in 2009, scoring the equaliser in the final, and in 2009–10 was instrumental in Chelsea clinching their first double, winning his second Golden Boot and scoring the only goal in the 2010 FA Cup Final. In March 2012, Drogba scored his 100th Premier League goal, the first African player to reach the milestone.

He then became the only player in history to score in four separate FA Cup finals, when he scored in Chelsea’s win over Liverpool in the 2012 final.

He made his last appearance for Chelsea in the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final, in which he scored an 88th-minute equaliser and the winning penalty in the deciding shoot-out against Bayern Munich.

In October 2013, he became the first African footballer to win the prestigious Golden Foot while playing for Galatasaray.

  • Drogba in talks over Chelsea return

Drogba’s representatives say a decision has not yet been made and that Chelsea is one of a number of options.

But talks are underway and the 36-year-old is likely to decide on a possible return this week.

Drogba was part of the Ivory Coast squad at the 2014 Fifa World Cup.

He made one start and two substitute appearances as his country were eliminated at the group stage after winning one of their three games.

Drogba, who joined Chelsea from Marseille for £24m in July 2004, won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and a Champions League during his first spell at Stamford Bridge.

He was on the losing side when the Blues beat Galatasaray in the last 16 of last season’s Champions League.

Before the second leg of that tie, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said Drogba was “still one of the best strikers in the world”.

Drogba still has close links to London and, during an interview with BBC Sport in February, said: “When you’re happy at a club, you want to stay forever.

“But sometimes you can’t do everything you want to do. I am proud of what I achieved.

“You don’t stay eight years in a place you don’t like, especially in football.”

  • Sounders fans prefer Drogba to Martins

Sounders fans prefer Drogba to Martins

The fans of Major League Soccer (MLS) side, Seattle Sounders, have expressed their desire to free Obafemi Martins, and take Ivorian star, Didier Drogba in his place.

Drogba is rumoured to be on the way to the MLS, with Sounders the reported destination.

In a write up on rantsports.com, Giancarlo Santoro, a supporter of Sounders, seemed to have echoed the views of majority of the supporters when he said:

“The deal for Drogba would occur at the end of the Turkish season, and if he were to join the Sounders, he would most likely be a designated player, meaning one of the current DP’s of Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins and Osvaldo Alonso would have to leave the club.

“With the loss of Eddie Johnson to DC United, and Martins’ desire to continue his career in Europe, Drogba would be the perfect replacement for the Sounders’ No. 9.

“The Nigerian’s conduct and attitude make it seem like he made a mistake by coming to MLS at only 29, and it is possible that he wants to return to European competition. Plagued by injuries last season, Martins only scored eight goals in 20 appearances and looked frustrated up front.

“Martins was pushing for a loan move during the January transfer window, and Sounders fans created the slogan, “Where in the world is Obafemi,” after the forward left Seattle to enjoy his time off.

Although much older than Martins, Drogba is a better, more experienced player, and is the top scorer and captain of one of Africa’s best teams, the Ivory Coast National Team.

Martins is currently back with Sounders, and scored twice in a pre season win.

  • CAF award: Mikel battles Yaya, Drogba

CAF award: Mikel battles Yaya, Drogba

Super Eagles midfielder, Mikel Obi will battle Ivorian pair of Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba for the 2013 CAF African Player of the Year Award, MTNFootball.com reports.

Mikel helped his English club to win the UEFA Europa League in May and also played a big role as Nigeria won a third Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa earlier this year.

It will be the second successive year that Drogba and Toure will make the final three nominees for this award.

Toure and Drogba have won the award twice.

The 2013 winner will be announced at a ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria, on January 9.

Nigeria has already won two awards after the country’s U-17 team, who won a record fourth World Cup in the UAE in November, was picked as the only nominees for National Youth Team and the country’s supporters picked for the Fair Play Award.

The Super Eagles had also been nominated along with Burkina Faso and Ethiopia for the National team of the year, while Nigeria coaches, Stephen Keshi and Manu Garba, are in the race for Coach of the Year along with Paul Put of Burkina Faso.

  • Mikel admits Chelsea have missed Drogba

Mikel admits Chelsea have missed Drogba

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel admits they’ve missed the influence of Didier Drogba this season.

Obi Mikel told the London Evening Standard: “There is no Didier this year. He is the man and someone who came up with the goods for us in the big games. When we played the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City I walked on to the pitch at Wembley, I was looking for Didier and I couldn’t find him. He was the one that always scored the goals.

“We had a very good team last year. That’s why we won the Champions League. There was no luck, we played for each other.

“But I think now we have a great, young team and we are moving in the right direction.”
