  • Airport Police Command gets new commissioner

    Mr Joseph Mukan has been appointed as the Commissioner, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Police Command, Lagos.

    The spokesman for the command, DSP Joseph Alabi, confirmed the development to the aviation correspondents in Lagos on Wednesday.

    He said Mukan, was a former Police Commissioner of Bayelsa before he was recently transferred to the nation’s busiest airport to replace AIG Aminchi Baraya.

    “The new CP is a thoroughbred professional and he will bring his wealth of experience to bear towards improving security at the Lagos airport.

    “He has since resumed duty with a stern warning to touts and other unscrupulous persons to stay clear of the airport or face prosecution, ” Alabi said.

    Meanwhile, Alabi said no fewer than 165 persons were charged to court for committing various offences at the Lagos airport between January and December 2018.

    According to him, some of the suspects were charged with assault, stealing, obtaining by false pretenses as well as unlawful entry and touting, which contravene the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN) bye Laws.

    Alabi said the command made 257 arrests and secured 46 convictions within the period under review.

    The spokesman said 32 persons were still under investigation while 60 others were awaiting trial.

    He stressed that the command was committed to making the airport and its environs safe and secure for travelers, airline operators and other airport users.

  • US deports 34 Nigerians

    No fewer than 34 Nigerians were on Wednesday deported from the United States of America for allegedly committing offences in the country.

    The deportees arrived at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMlA), Lagos at about 2.30 p.m.

    The deportees, comprising 32 males and two females, were brought back in a chartered Omni Air International aircraft with Registration Number W342AX.

    Spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, DSP Joseph Alabi, confirmed the development to our reporter.

    Alabi said, “at about 14.30 hours (2.30 p.m.), we received 34 Nigerians who were brought back from the United States. They were made up of 32 males and two females. ”

    He said the 25 of the deportees were alleged to have committed criminal offences, with one involved in narcotics while others were alleged to have committed immigration-related offences.

    Alabi said the deportees were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Police.

    Also on ground to receive them were officials of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

    He said that the deportees were profiled by the relevant authorities and allowed to depart to their various destinations.

    580 more Nigerians to return from Libya this week

    Barely three weeks after 138 Nigerians returned voluntarily from Libya, another 580 are being expected from the North African country, this week.

    DSP Joseph Alabi, the spokesperson for the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.

    Alabi said that 420 Nigerians would arrive in the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Tuesday via two chartered flights while another 160 would come back on Thursday.

    NAN recalled that 138 Nigerians, on Oct. 3 returned from Libya where they had been stranded enroute Europe.

    The returnees were brought back on the expression of interest to return to Nigeria through the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

    Their flight, with Registration No: 5ADM had touched down at the Cargo Wing of MMIA at about 8:05pm.

    The returnees comprised of 65 female adults, two teenage girls and two infants (baby girls) while the male adults were 64, two teenage boys and three infants (baby boys).

    Four of the returnees who had medical cases were evacuated upon arrival, for emergency treatment.

    They were received by the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Police. (NAN)

    Spain deports 23 Nigerians for various offences

    The Spanish Government on Tuesday deported 23 Nigerians for committing various offences in the country, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    They were deported barely five days after 34 Nigerians were sent home from six European countries for committing immigration-related offences.

    NAN reports that 34 Nigerians were jointly deported by six European countries on June 22 for committing immigration-related offences.

    The deportees were sent back home from Switzerland, Germany, Iceland, Austria, Belgium and Hungary.

    NAN gathered that the new set of deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMlA) Lagos, at about 6.40 a.m on Tuesday.

    The new deportees, comprising 21 males and two females, were brought back in a privilege style aircraft with registration number EC-IZO.

    DSP Joseph Alabi, the spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development to NAN.

    Alabi said that the deportees were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Police.

    He said that others also on ground to receive them were officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

    According to him, nine of the deportees, who were deported for drug-related offences, were handed over to the NDLEA.

    He said that two others, who were deported for criminal offences, were handed over to the police.

    Alabi said that the remaining 12 deportees, accused of breaching the country’s immigration rules, were profiled and allowed to go to their respective destinations.

    34 Nigerians were on Thursday deported from six European countries for committing immigration-related offences.

    The affected individuals were from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Iceland and Switzerland.

    The deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMlA), Lagos, at 6: 30 a.m. on Thursday.

    They were brought back in a chartered Airblue Panorama aircraft.

    The deportees comprised 32 males and two females.

    The Spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, DSP Joseph Alabi, confirmed the development.

    He said: “This (Thursday) morning, we received 34 Nigerians who were brought back from Europe. They comprised 32 males and two females.”

    He said the deportees allegedly committed immigration-related offences in their host countries.

    Alabi said the deportees were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the police.

    “Also on ground to receive them were officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),” the police spokesman added.

    The deportees were profiled by immigration authorities and allowed to depart to their various destinations.

  • German dies after slumping at Lagos airport

    A German citizen, Mr. Brenard Christo, who slumped on Friday at the General Aviation Terminal of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, has died at an undisclosed hospital.

    The spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, DSP Joseph Alabi, confirmed the German’s death on Saturday.

    Alabi said the deceased was waiting to board a local Arik Air flight when he suddenly collapsed.

    He said medical personnel attached to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) rushed to the scene to assist the German and was eventually taken to a hospital where he later died.

  • 50 Nigerians deported from European countries arrive Lagos

    Some 50 Nigerians were on Thursday deported from eight European countries for committing immigration-related offences.

    The Nigerians were deported from Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Luxembourg, Austria, Belgium, Spain and Hungary.

    Their deportation is coming barely 48 hours after another set of 40 Nigerians were deported by the Italian Government, for similar reasons.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fresh batch of deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMlA), Lagos at about 7.36 a.m.

    The deportees, comprising of 48 males and two females, were brought back in a chartered Privileged Time aircraft, with registration number EC-L20.

    DSP Joseph Alabi, spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development to NAN.

    Alabi said: “this morning, we received 50 Nigerians who were brought back from Europe.

    “We had three males from Switzerland; from Germany, we had seven males; from Sweden, we had four males, from Luxembourg, we had six males; from Austria, we had 18, comprising of 17 males and one female.

    “From Belgium, we had only one female; from Spain, we had five males and finally from Hungary, we had six males, which makes it a total of 50,’’ he said.

    Alabi said all the deportees were alleged to have committed immigration-related offences in their host countries.

    Alabi said the deportees were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Police.

    Also on ground to receive them were officials the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

    S/Africa deports 97 Nigerians for committing various offences

    The South African Government has deported 97 Nigerians for committing various offences in the country.

    The deportees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Monday night in a chartered aircraft with the registration number GBB710 from Johannesburg.

    The deportees were made up of 95 males and two females.

    DSP Joseph Alabi, the Spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development to journalists.

    An immigration source told a reporter of the News Agency of Nigeria on condition of anonymity that six of the deportees were returned to the country for drug offences while 10 were arrested and deported for other criminal offences.

    The others were said to have committed immigration offences in the Southern African country.

    All the deportees were profiled by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) while those deported for drug-related offences were handed over to the Police for further investigation.

    The Federal Government had also on Monday evacuated 41 Nigerian girls who were trafficked to Mali for sex and labour exploitation.

    Six of the suspected human traffickers were also apprehended and brought back to the country for prosecution.
