    Police deploys tactical team to secure release of ex-DPO

    Edo State Police Command said it has deployed tactical team to secure release of an octogenarian and retired Superintendent of Police, Chief James Omafuaire.

    Chief Omafuaire was abducted alongside his wife, Victoria, at his Ikpeshi Quarry site in Akoko Edo local government area of Edo.

    Edo police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, who confirmed the abduction, said the police had deployed tactical team in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters to secure release of Chief Omafuaire.

    He assured that the entire forest in the area would be combed.

    It would be recalled that kidnappings have been on the increase in Edo State in the last two months.

    A musician, Osayomore Joseph, who was abducted on October 3 is yet to be released.

    Three suspects arrested over killing of UNIBEN Professor

    Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of a Professor in the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Paul Otasowie of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

    The killing of Prof. Otasowie on Wednesday night is coming 24 hours after Edo ace musician, Osayomore Joseph, was abducted by gunmen.

    Rising insecurity situation in the state has heightened fears among residents in the state as several persons have been kidnapped in the past two weeks.

    Sources said late Otasowie was killed after the gunmen failed to kidnap him at his residence at Siluko Road in Oredo local government area.

    Another source said Prof. Otasowie was shot dead by the armed men in front of his residence while coming down from his storey building.

    The deceased was a former director of UNIBEN’s Industrial Training and Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme.

    Spokesman for the university, Mr. Michael Osasuyi, who confirmed the killing said the institution was yet to get full details of the killing.

    He said, “We lost him (Otasowie) Thursday. We are trying to gather the right information now (because) we are getting different versions.

    “The first version said that it was an assassination (while) the second version said that it was armed robbery, that he was inside a car and they shot him.”

    “For now, the university cannot ascertain what has transpired. But we are sending delegates now to the house to meet with the family.

    “We commiserate with the family and it is a big blow to the university. He was one of the persons who have ensured that work is done and done well.

    “The vice-chancellor, Prof. Orunmwense is saddened with this development. We just wish that this insecurity in Edo State is looked into. Just recently, (Joseph) Osayomore was kidnapped.

    “The level of insecurity now is becoming something else. The vice-chancellor commiserates with the family and the school is mourning,” the spokesman added.

    Edo police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, said three suspects have been arrested in connection to the killing of Prof. Otasowie.

    DSP Nkombe stated that the police received distressed call from neighbours in the area and when policemen got the scene, they found the Professor already dead.

    Nkombe said nothing was taken from the late Otasowie.

    On the abduction of Managing Director of Ogba Zoo and Nature Park Dr. Andy Ehanire and Osayomore, DSP Nkombe assured that the police would soon rescue them.

    He said all efforts were being put into securing their release.

    Gunmen kill three policemen, abduct leisure park chief

    Three policemen attached to the Edo Police Command were killed by gunmen in Benin, Edo State, on Sunday.

    The policemen were posted to provide security for fun seekers at the Ogba Zoo and Nature Park in Oredo local government area of the state.

    The gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, also abducted the chief executive of the park, Dr. Andy Ehanire.

    The gunmen took the rifles of the policemen after killing them.

    It was learnt that the killing disrupted activities at the park as many fun seekers scampered for safety.

    The command’s Spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, who confirmed the incident, said the situation had been brought under control.

    Nkombe said the attackers would soon be brought to book as security had been beefed up in the area.

    He assured members of the public that the park is safe for fun seekers.

    The remains of the police officers had since been deposited at the Benin Central Hospital morgue.

    Tension in Edo community over rape, killing of two women

    There is tension in Ewu community, Esan Central local government area over last week killing of two elderly women by suspected herdsmen.

     

    The women were also found to have been raped before they were killed.

     

    Their bodies were found in their various farms by a search party when they did not return home.

     

    Names of the deceased were given as Christiana Ikheloa and Fatima Emoyon.

     

    Daughter of one of the deceased who gave her name as Patience Emoyon said cows were seen in the place where her mother’s corpse was found.

     

    She said her mother was found stone dead.

     

    Son of Christiana, Robert, said the person that picked his mother’s cell phone spoke Hausa language.

     

    He urged the state government to fish out the killers and rapists.

     

    Police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, confirmed the incident but said he was not aware if any person has been arrested.

    Two soldiers arrested for sacking mobile Court in Edo

    Two soldiers have been arrested in Edo State for disrupting the sitting of a mobile court at the Oba Ovoranmen Square.

     

    The mobile court was set up to prosecute traders caught selling on the walk ways and in the streets around the Oba Ovoranmen Square.

     

    It was learnt that five soldiers stormed the mobile court after a retired failed to secure the release of his wife who was arrested and about to be arraigned before the mobile court.

     

    Sources said policemen attached to the mobile court resisted the soldiers and there was exchange of gunfire.

     

    The source said the soldiers overpowered the policemen and scattered the mobile court.

     

    All the seats and canopies were over turned while arrested suspects were set free.

     

    Acting Managing Director of Edo State Waste Management Board, Prince Aiyamenkhue Akonofua, said several persons were injured in the melee.

     

    Prince Akonofua said the presiding Magistrate, Ihenyen Aigbediofe, was whisked away to safety.

     

    Akonofua stated that two out of the five soldiers were arrested and that the state Police Commissioner, Haliru Gwandu, has assured them that the law would take its course.

     

    Edo Police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, confirmed the arrest of the soldiers adding that the state Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the investigation.

     

    “It is true. The soldiers went to the mobile court to free some suspects. Our policemen resisted them.”

    Robbers kill apple seller in Edo 

    An apple seller simply identified as Gideon has been killed by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.

    The victim was killed at his resident at 7b Egbede street, off New Lagos Road, in Egor Local government of Edo state

    Witnesses said the victim was accosted by the gunmen when he wanted to ease himself at his backyard at about 10pm.

    He was said to have been shot while his cell phones and money were collected.

    Neighbours said late Gideon had collected money from his customers which was to be used the following (today) morning to purchase more goods from Lagos.

    Other residents living in the street were also robbed of money and valuables.

    Edo police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe could not be reached.

    The corpse of the victim has been deposited at the Central Hospital morgue by  men of  Okhoro police division.

     

  • Hoodlums kill two security guards in Edo

    Two security guards at a petrol station located along Benin-Auchi Express Road have been stabbed to death.

    They were reportedly killed by hoodlums operating in the area.

    The guards’ lifeless bodies were found by workers of the petrol station when they resumed work on Monday morning.

    Edo State Police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, confirmed the killings.

    He said police has commenced investigation into the incident and assured that the perpetrators would soon be arrested.

    On the cult -related killings, Nkombe said a police patrol team saw a headless body along Sokponba road in Benin City and took the corpse to the mortuary.
