  • Rivers Collation: Police to deploy personnel, shut Aba road

    Rivers Police Command on Monday said it has commenced the deployment of personnel to strategic areas and collation centres for election results collation scheduled to begin in the state on Tuesday.

    The Command’s Spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, made this known in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday.

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on March 21, announced the resumption of collation and announcement of results in the state between April 2 and April 5.

    According to Omoni, the decision to deploy personnel was reached following a meeting between the state Police Commissioner and the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

    “ICCES agreed to put in place adequate security measures to ensure that the entire process is transparent and seamlessly carried out.

    “Part of the security measures that were agreed include massive deployment of police personnel and other sister security agencies to the venue and the outer perimeter of collation centres.

    Omoni said that Waterlines and GRA junction axis of Port Harcourt/Aba Express Road, would be shut to traffic during the duration of the exercise.

    He said that both lanes of the road would be closed to motorists, advising road users to divert to Olu Obansanjo and Polo Club Roads.

    “The police note with concern the temporary hardship the closure will cause. We appeal to the public to show understanding and bear with us.

    “The closure is done in the overall interest of the public, as well as to provide a conducive atmosphere for the collation.

    “Politicians, candidates and indeed unauthorised persons, are warned to stay clear from the collation centres,” he said.

    The police spokesperson warned that any individual or group seen undermining the process would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Electoral Act.

    Omoni solicited for the cooperation and support of the public towards a successful conduct of the exercise.

    Police say public uncooperative in sharing information in Rivers

    The Police Command in Rivers has alleged that the public  is uncooperative in sharing information that could lead to arrest of criminals.

    The command’s spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Monday.

    NAN reports that the command had in September declared eight young men wanted in connection with killings in Mgbuoshimi in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

    “The earlier the eight wanted persons are withdrawn from the public, the better and safer for the society.

    “The public is not cooperative with the police in information sharing.

    “Modern policing is intelligence-driven.

    “We appeal to the public to share information with the command to arrest the eight declared persons wanted.

    “The public should see the police as partners in crime control and prevention.

    “The police personnel are not spirit to be everywhere and know all the happenings, hence the introduction of community policing,” he said.

    The spokesman said that wherever the suspects were hiding – house, uncompleted building, forest, was owned by somebody and appealed for information-sharing.

    He assured the public that such security information would be treated with confidentiality to protect the life of the informant. (NAN)

    Suspected criminals set family house ablaze, kill three in Rivers

    Unidentified criminals believed to be cultists has set ablaze a family house at Okpako-Ejemah in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State killing one  Alhaji Hamza Garuba, his wife and a step son.

    Mr. Muhammed Sani, younger brother to Garuba, narrated to The Nation that the arsonists, five in number invaded his brother’s house at about10.00p.m. Tuesday and attempted to rob the family.

    Sani said the bandits had attempted to rape wife of Garuba, but that the deceased who was infuriated stabbed one of the bandits to death.

    He said: “I believed the stabbing of that criminal may have infuriated other gang members who quickly ran out of the house, locked the entrance door and set the house ablaze. My brother, his wife and a step son were locked up inside the house while the house was on fire. Nobody was at hand to rescue them as all of them were burnt beyond recognition.”

    Muhammed stated that killing was not in connection of the clash between Hausa community and task force team in Onne, Eleme LGA, Monday, adding that Garuba was killed by criminals that invaded his house.

    However, the Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident and added that two persons have been arrested in relation to the matter.

    Meantime, Arewa Consultative Forum, South-South, South-East branch, has condemned the killing and worried that mischief makers want to cause disunity among Hausa community and the people of Eleme.

    Speaking, the Coordinator of the body, Alhaji Musa Saidu, noted that Garuba was killed by bandits, saying: “The incident at Okpako-Ejemah was a clear case of robbery and arsonist attack. The Young man and his family were killed by arsonist who set their house ablaze. Hausa people have co-habited with their host community and they don’t have any issue.”

    Two feared killed as task force, Hausa traders clash in Rivers

    Two people have been feared killed after some Hausa traders and some youths believed to be local government task force team in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State clash over task payment.

    The Nation gathered that the trouble started when some youths from Eleme, who are operating as task force went to Opaku park in Onne to demand payment of task from Hausa traders who are doing business in the area.

    Mr. Franklin Bobmanuel, who witnessed the incident, narrated that the youths picked offense when the traders declined paying the tax which  resulted to free for all.

    Bobmanuel said that one of the tax officials died during the fight and that the task force on noticing that one of them has died and in retaliation killed one of the traders.

    The Rivers State police command has confirmed that  a church and a mosque in the area have been  burnt down.

    The Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed that the two groups clashed in Eleme which led to the burning of a church and Mosque in the area.

    Omoni said: “We are aware of the Incident, but I am yet to get detail of what happened. We have swung into action, our men have been deployed to the area to maintain calm and we are investigating the matter, we will make the report available as soon as we are through.”
