•GOC: govt won’t tolerate violence in Rivers

he General Officer Commanding (GOC) the newly-created 6 Division in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, Maj.-Gen. Kasimu Abdulkarim, yesterday displayed the AK-47 rifle and uniforms of  Mohammed Alkali, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Mobile Police Unit 48 and his orderly, Sgt. Urukwu Nwachukwu.

Alkali and Nwachukwu were beheaded during the December 10 bloody legislative rerun in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah, is an indigene of the local government.

The GOC warned against violation of Army’s clean-up operation in the crude oil and gas-rich Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, where he said innocent persons were killed daily by militants and cultists.

The GOC said workers of oil companies and others had become apprehensive and were relocating from the area because of the development.

He said the Federal Government would provide tight security in all parts of Rivers.

Abdulkarim stressed that the trend of violence in the state could not be left unchecked.

The GOC displayed the arms, ammunition and other items recovered from hoodlums in the local government.

He also paraded one of the suspects, saying others had been handed over to the police for prosecution.

Abdulkarim said: “Four of the suspected criminals’ camps located across the river in Ujju Town near Omoku (the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA) were raided on December 31, 2016. In the raid operations, 6 Division troops, in conjunction with Operation Delta Safe Special Boat Service and air component, engaged the suspected criminals in severe exchange of fire, in which they were dislodged. This led to the arrest of suspects.

“Ammunition, uniforms and weapons were recovered. The late DSP Mohammed Alkali with his orderly, Sgt. Urukwu Nwachukwu’s AK-47 rifle and uniforms, as evidenced in the name tags, were also recovered.

“The large cache of ammunition and weapons recovered in the operation also include one AK-47 rifle, two G3 rifles, five double-barrelled guns, two pistols, 31 empty AK-47 magazines, 242 rounds of 7.62 mm NATO and 322 rounds of other ammunition calibre.

“Other recovered items include 31 handsets, bullet-proof jackets, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, first aid box and seven police uniforms.

“In the last one month, 15 people were horrifically murdered with many others kidnapped in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA of Rivers State. Those killed include a soldier, four officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), two policemen and eight civilians. The gunmen also took away ammunition, vehicles and weapons.

“This trend of violence cannot be left unchecked. The 6 Division will sustain operation clean-up of the area (Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA), for oil companies and the people to go about their businesses in a peaceful environment.

“It is envisaged that sustaining the operation will end the senseless killing of innocent citizens, including security personnel. This will further frustrate illegal arms and ammunition acquisition, which will usher secure environment for economic prospects.

“The clean-up operation is in continuation of efforts by the division to recover and mop up illegally-acquired weapons from cultists and criminals, who do not mean well for our dear nation and refuse to embrace the Rivers State amnesty programme.”

  • DSP, orderly beheaded during Rivers rerun

DSP, orderly beheaded during Rivers rerun

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) the newly-created 6 Division of the Army in Port Harcourt, Maj.-Gen. Kasimu Abdulkarim, and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, are at loggerheads over Saturday’s legislative rerun across the three senatorial districts.

The GOC yesterday in Port Harcourt disclosed that two policemen: Alkali Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Mobile Police Unit 48, was beheaded along with his orderly by hoodlums, who sntached away their patrol vehicle and weapons. Three policemen escaped, but five were still “missing in action” in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers, where the state’s Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah, hails from.

Wike and Obuah had earlier accused the Army and policemen of killing three PDP members (two in Bodo-Ogoni in Gokana Local Government Area and one in Tai-Ogoni Local Government Area) aiding All Progressives Congress (APC) members to hijack electoral materials.

The GOC, however, declared that the allegations made by some respected politicians regarding deep involvement of soldiers during the elections were false and aimed at tarnishing the army’s image.

To Maj.-Gen. Abdulkarim, PDP leaders, “weighty” allegations that soldiers were involved in ballot box snatching, illegal escort of some politicians, arrest and detention of voters could cause members of the public to view soldiers negatively, hence the need to adequately inform the public on the true perspective. He said the public should consider the allegations as “mere farce to garner sympathy”.

The GOC maintained that the 6 Division remained apolitical, adding that its soldiers provided perimeter defence to ward off hoodlums and miscreants.

He said: “The most brutal incident occurred (during Saturday’s rerun) at Ujju community near Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA of Rivers State, where a police patrol team was ambushed. In the ambush, 10 policemen scampered into the bush. The Mobile Police organised a rescue mission. Regrettably, the team discovered that DSP Alkali Mohammed of Mobile Police Unit 48 was beheaded along with his orderly. The patrol vehicle was taken away with weapons. Three policemen escaped. Five were missing in action.

“This is the same area where soldiers of 34 Brigade were ambushed on November 20, 2016, where a soldier was killed. Also, on November 21, 2016, four personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were killed and their weapons carted away.

“These attacks are reasonable evidence of violations of breach of law and order which portray the area as a flashpoint. Despite these barbarism, soldiers acted with civility and professionalism, guaranteeing peaceful elections.

“Nigerian Army, as a respected institution with constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property, could not watch miscreants and hoodlums abducting, maiming and killing innocent citizens, especially in senseless attacks on uniform personnel.”

Maj.-Gen. Abdulkarim also expressed surprise on the “frivolous” and “baseless” allegations levelled against the Army by politicians on the legislative elections.

He said: “Nigerian Army troops were in no way involved in any form of ballot box snatching; neither were they involved in the escort of politicians as alleged. They acted swiftly in response to security breaches, in order to enforce the law, provide aid to the police and other security agencies, especially in areas like Abonema, Etche, Gokana, Ikwere, Eleme, Tai, Khana and Omoku, among others. These areas have armed men that engaged security personnel.

“Susceptibility of the areas warranted providing security for the electoral officials, voters, international and local observers, in conjunction with other security agencies by soldiers for peaceful elections to thrive in the environment.

“In Gokana Local Government, armed hoodlums engaged the soldiers providing outer perimeter defence for the electorate. In Abonnema, at 0730 hours on Saturday, there were three explosions that created bedlam. Subsequently, 11 NYSC members were abducted along with electoral materials. However, 10 of them were rescued two hours later by the soldiers while one was rescued about eight hours later.

“At Emohua, Mr … abducted five NYSC members with election materials in a Sienna bus. The corps members were rescued while the suspect was handed over to the police. Many shootings were recorded in some communities, such as Bodo-Ogoni (Gokana LGA), the hometown of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (Chief Kenneth Kobani); B-Dere and Mogho in Gokana Local Government, including snatching of ballot boxes.”

The GOC also maintained that the rerun in the 23 local government councils was adjudged credible, free, fair and peaceful in many parts of the state, describing the accusation of soldiers’ partisanship as a “sham” while assuring that the 6 Division would continue to be apolitical in the discharge of its roles to ensure provision of adequate security in the state.

Wike accused the army and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police of killing two PDP agents in Bodo-Ogoni on Saturday, hijacking electoral materials and working to deliver APC candidates.

He stated that no matter the use of the army and SARS personnel by the APC-led Federal Government, Rivers state would never be conquered.

The governor said: “I anticipated it. I tried to let the world know that these are the plans of the security agencies.

”In all my political career, I have never experienced this kind of invasion by security agencies. What causes violence is when you give certain persons undue advantage.

”Be assured that we are resisting it. It may take our lives, but we will resist it to the last. That is what is expected, when you are fighting for freedom. You must make sacrifices.

”It is unfortunate that we are congratulating the opposition for winning in Ghana, but here the military men are directly involved in rigging and hijacking of electoral materials.”

“They say they want to give Rivers State Governor problems, but you are not giving Rivers State Governor problems, you are giving Nigeria problems.”

Wike said he had informed an unnamed National Commissioner of INEC and the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the commission in Rivers state, Aniedi Ikoiwak, of the problems in Khana and Gokana LGAs, with an assurance that action would be taken.

The governor, yesterday evening in Port Harcourt, through his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, said: “Soldiers arrested and brutalised Emohua Local Government Caretaker Chairman, in a bid to rig. Military invades Emohua, arrests John Wokoma, CTC Chairman, Emohua LGA, whisks him away to unknown destination. Operation led by Col Ali of the Army, claiming instructions from Brigade Commander. Nigerian Army stops announcement of Emohua results already collated.

“Andoni LGA collation centre at Ngo (council’s headquarters), collation completed, PDP in clear victory, INEC abruptly declares original result sheets missing.”

*Brought the exalted office of the governor of Bayelsa State to disrepute, odium and ridicule by jumping a London bail and returning to Nigeria.

    * Become an International fugitive as the Scotland Yard may issued a warrant of arrest against him which embarrassed the people of Bayelsa.

    * By this ignominious conduct scandalized and embarrassed Bayelsans and indeed all Nigerians.

*Jeopardized the safety and besmirched the reputation of Nigerians living in or visiting The United Kingdom.

*Breached his oath to respect international law.

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly subsequently impeached him from office on December 8, 2005 after adopting the report of the seven-man impeachment panel set up by the Chief Justice of Bayelsa State, Emmanuel Igonarwari. He was found me guilty of gross misconduct.

Continuing his brush with the law, he was arrested by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), questioned, and charged with numerous money laundering and corruption offences.

These included six charges of making false declaration of assets, and 23 charges of money laundering by my company. He was also accused of falsely declaring his assets by refusing to declare the following properties upon his re-election in 2003:

And in February 2006, the Asset Forfeiture Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa secured a court order to confiscate his house at the Cape Town waterfront.

The last of his run in with the law was the sudden extradition request sent to the Federal Government of Nigeria by the United Kingdom on the premise that he has an outstanding case of money laundering to answer in that country.

  • ‘Ritualists’ throw woman’s body from vehicle

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]leeing “ritualists” at the weekend threw the remains of a 23-year-old woman off a moving vehicle onto a refuse dump at the  Olomo-Ore Junction in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, and sped off.

The victim, who was  identified as Sitira at Lafenwa Divisional Police headquarters, Abeokuta, where her body was taken to after it was pulled out from the refuse dump, was said to be  a trainee-stylist.

Females’ items such as pants, “leggings”, brassieres, camisole, make-up kits and a  pack of cotton wool littered where the suspected ritualists hurriedly threw Sitira’s remains.

Esther Adewuyi, who identified herself as a relative of Sitira, told reporters that the late stylist lived with her mother in Iberekodo village in Abeokuta North Local Government Area.

Esther said she was last seen in their house on Saturday evening planning her graduation from apprenticeship.

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi told The Nation that the girl was killed at the spot where she was dumped by the assailants, adding that besides the injury on her right hand, there was no suggestion she was killed for for rituals.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), added that no one knew those who carried out the killing.

The police, he said, have started investigation into the incident.

  • Woman ‘assaults’ girl for bed-wetting

    Woman ‘assaults’ girl for bed-wetting

A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly beating and inflicting injuries on a 10-year-old girl for bed-wetting.

The suspect, Joy Amodu, was paraded yesterday at the Police Command, Oduduwa, Ikeja, Lagos, by its spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). She said the incident occurred on February 29, adding that police operatives had since been on her trail.

Braide said Amodu, who claimed to be an employee of a private security company in the state beat up the victim with a stick and inflicted injuries all over her body.

She said: “On February. 29, the police at Onikan Division got a tip-off that a little girl was in a critical condition in one hospital. The officers went there and found the victim with her face and hands swollen as a result of beating she received from Amodu.

“The victim was later referred to the Military Hospital on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, for better treatment as she had earlier been rejected at other hospitals due to her condition. A non-government, The Hands that Cares, was also invited into the case by a good Nigerian. The organisation has taken over the case with a view to settling the hospital bills, while calling for prosecution of the suspect.

“The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, has investigated the case and the suspect will be charged to court. The legal department of the SCID would advise us on the offence she will be charge with. We are going to prosecute the case in collaboration with the NGO.”

The National Coordinator of the organisation, Mrs Jacinta Nworie, said the suspect was a younger sister to the victim’s father, adding that the suspect allegedly took the girl from her Kogi State-based father under the guise that she would train her in Lagos.

“The condition we met the girl in the hospital was so bad. The victim told us that the suspect bit her, poured hot ointment into her private part and flogged her with a stick. We met a man who claimed to be her father, pleading that the suspect should be released because it is a family matter, but we are not so sure he is the father. We will release the girl to him only if he can provide evidence of his relationship with the girl,” Nworie said.

Joy said she did not mean to inflict the injuries on the girl, adding that she was not happy over the fact that she was bed-wetting.

  • Suspected highway robber held

    Suspected highway robber held

Eight days ago, as a free man, he led his gang on a mission. His dreaded five-man armed robbery gang attacked passengers in a Lagos-bound luxury bus belonging to GC Okoli Transport Company on its way from Sagamu in Ogun State.

Today, he is in the net of the Lagos State Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which caught him while others fled.

The suspect, Mmaduabuchi Ibe (37), a sculptor, was paraded yesterday by the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP), who said he was arrested in one of the vehicles snatched by his gang at Sagamu.

Braide said the suspect was wearing a fake bullet proof vest when he was caught. She said the operatives were still on the trail of the fleeing suspects, noting that Ibe would be charged to court after investigations.

Ibe said poverty and frustration led him into robbery, explaining: “I met members of my gang, Monday, IK, Sunday and Miracle, at Oyingbo where we slept under the bridge in a nearby smoking joint. After narrating to them my problems and frustrations and how I left Ghana for Senegal to look for job, how things became worse and how I returned to Nigeria. They told me they had a job and asked me to drive them. It was Sunday and IK that wore the bullet-proof vest made of polythene.”

Ibe revealed that the gang attacked two commercial buses at Sagamu on the New Year Eve, but said they did not get anything from the first bus because the whole passengers ran into the bush. In the second bus, he said they “captured” seven passengers and dispossessed them of money and phone sets. However, he said not get a kobo because the loot was yet to be shared when he was arrested.

He urged Commissioner of Police Umar Manko to forgive him because they only operated with wooden guns that were mere toys. He said he would help the police to arrest his accomplices and other criminals in Oyingbo if released and allowed to join the police.

Officer-in-Charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the suspect was correct that their bullet-proof vests and guns were made in Nigeria, but said it is incredible that they could intimidate passengers with polythene-made bullet-proof vests and toy guns.

  • JTF arrests Amaechi’s opponents with arms, ammunition, hands them over to police

JTF arrests Amaechi’s opponents with arms, ammunition, hands them over to police

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta, codenamed Operation Pulo (Oil) Shield, has arrested six persons with arms and ammunition in Rivers State, with sources indicating that the suspects are political opponents of Governor Rotimi Amaechi, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).

The Spokesman of the JTF, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, last night, confirmed the arrest, but insisted that the suspects were picked for illegal possession of firearms and not for political reason.

Nwachukwu said: “As at 3rd January six suspects with arms were arrested during a routine patrol at Ogu community in Ogu/Bolo LGA (of Rivers State). Items recovered were: 7 x AK-47, 164 rounds of ammunition and six locally made canon launchers.

“Suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Police yesterday (Friday). They were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and not for any reason of political or social affiliation as being wrongly insinuated.”

The Rivers Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), when contacted at 8:12 pm yesterday, said of the suspects’ handover to the police by the JTF: “I have not been briefed of such handover, for now.”

A source in Port Harcourt stated that the suspects were associates of Senator George Sekibo, who represents Rivers East Senatorial District and the self-acclaimed Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Evans Bipi, the representative of Ogu/Bolo constituency, who are allies of the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience.

The source said: “On January 3rd, members of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) arrested six youths around Ekporo Road, on their way to Ogu in Ogu/Bolo LGA of Rivers State. They were in an off white Land Rover jeep, with registration number JJ 441 BZ. The youths were arrested based on their suspicious movement.

“Those arrested gave their names as Sunday Elisha, Uche Jenikachi, Ibinabo Lawson, Okechukwu Okoro, Jerry Tonye and Daniel Ibito-Anga, who parades himself and his known in Ogu/Bolo as Security Adviser/Personal Assiatant to both Senator George Sekibo and Evans Bipi.

“Both Senator Sekibo and Evans Bipi are from Ogu and are known and have confessed publicly to be extremely close associates of the Nigerian First Lady, Patience Jonathan, who hails from nearby Okrika and they all speak the same native Okrika dialect.

“As a matter of fact, Evans Bipi was a domestic aide of Mrs. Jonathan before he was elected into the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2011. Senator Sekibo, who nurses a governorship ambition in 2015, is hoping to ride into Rivers State Government House on the back of Mrs. Jonathan.

All of them are also known publicly to be fighting the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.”

While also corroborating that arms and ammunition recovery from the suspects by the JTF, the sources said: “Found in the possession of the boys and recovered from them were 7 AK-47 assorted riffles, 146 rounds of 7.62 mm special life ammunition and 10 life magazines, among others.

“After their arrest, they were taken by the JTF team to Bori Camp, the military base in Port Harcourt. The boys have been handed over to the police in Rivers State. The police in the state are headed by the Commissioner, Mbu Joseph Mbu, who is said to have been brought to head the State Police Command by Mrs. Jonathan. Mbu has been accused of taking directives from Mrs. Jonathan and her associates.

“Only recently, the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, raised the alarm that arms, ammunition and weapons are being brought into the state (Rivers) by those opposed to his administration, ahead of the next general elections.”

It will be recalled that Amaechi, President Jonathan, Dame Patience, and most leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state had been at loggerheads over the scheming for 2015 and worsened with the NGF chairman’s defection to the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
