    All-Stars players threaten demonstration

All-Stars players of the Men’s DStv/Basketball League on Tuesday threatened to embark on a peaceful demonstration for the payments of their 2013 All-Star Conference final prize money played in September in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the final was between two All-Stars teams of the Savannah and the Atlantic Conferences which signalled the end of the season.

The Atlantic All-Stars which narrowly defeated Savannah All-Stars 104-103 at the final won N1 million prize money, while Savannah won N500,000. The players, however, told NAN in Lagos that up till now, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) had yet to redeem the prize money.

“The federation has sidelined us and has refused to pay us our allowances,’’ the players said.

Hillary Aighokhaode of the Atlantic Conference said that it has been a waiting game for the money they were owed and something has to be done.

“It has been a waiting game, we have only heard promises and this is why we will embark on a peaceful demonstration before the coming jump-ball-date on Feb. 28,’’ he said.

Obum Onyia also of the Atlantic said the situation was pathetic and that NBBF had completely forgotten them.

“The NBBF has definitely paid the musicians that entertained them on that day and totally did not take the players seriously. We are the players that played the game, how do we go about paying our rents and personal dues when we cannot receive what we are owed?’’ Onyia wondered.

Azoma Dike, who also stars for the Atlantic, described the situation as unfair, adding that NBBF should consider them and pay the debt.

“They keep promising and not fulfilling their promises, this is not fair. We are the ones that matter as regards the game, and hence, we should be treated fairly. I won the Most Valuable Player award and it goes with a N250, 000 cash prize. But till date, I have yet to receive the award and the allowances,’’ he said.

Abubakar Usman, who plays in the Savannah team, said the NBBF should understand their plight as players.

“We are imploring them to understand that we went through a lot to be in Lagos for the match, some of us borrowed money to be present for the match,” he said.

Timothy Kwanor of Savannah who won the Three-Point-Shot Award of N100,000 also expressed dissatisfaction and urged the NBBF to consider them.

“The match was held since September last year, even if they are not yet ready, then they should communicate properly to us. They just left us chasing them,’’ Kwanor said.

Contributing, Tony Thomas, an ex-player and member, Basketball Professional Association of Nigeria (BAPAN), said that the players were right to fight for their entitlements.

“We had wanted to stage a lock-out sometimes last season due to many issues coming up, but the players said they could cope with their challenges then. However, with this development and other issues which had been untouched for long, there is a tendency for peaceful demonstration before the jump-ball-date.

“The federation needs to have the concerns of the players as their responsibilities, but in a situation when this does not happen then there is tendency to be chaos,’’ Thomas added.

The players, however, did not disclose to NAN when they would stage the demonstration.

Domicilled on DStv Channel 305, management of the channel said the programme would be another platform for new content for kids, adding that this year’s programme marks the second annual call for international submissions for a new set of creative voices and visionaries.

Hicks said Nickelodeon will choose a minimum of 10 pitches to be developed into short animated films to appear on air and on Nickelodeon websites globally. “These shorts also have the potential of becoming long-form animated series on Nickelodeon,” he stated, adding that in 2013 Nickelodeon received over 1,000 pitches worldwide for the programme.

“Ideas will be accepted from a broad pool of creative talent from all quarters, including artists, designers, writers, directors and comedians. Creators will be provided with the artistic and production support teams to help them complete their fully animated shorts.

“Shorts must be original, humour-based and character-driven. All animation styles are encouraged from 2D to digital 2D, stop motion, CG or mixed media. The deadline for submissions is March 14, 2014,” said Hicks.

From the pitches received in 2013, 10 domestic and seven international pitches were chosen to be developed into animated shorts that will air on Nickelodeon or appear on www.nickelodeonafrica.com throughout 2014.

Osas Ighodaro joins AfricaMagic Awards emcees

AFRICAMAGIC Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) has announced Tinsel star, Osas Ighodaro, as the new addition to the celebrity emcee list for its gala ceremony.

Though both IK Osakioduwa and Vimbai Mutinhiri, co-host of last year’s edition, are being returned, they will be burdened with fewer responsibilities, as some of the segments will be anchored by Ighodaro, who is also a part of the AfricaMagic’s onscreen family.

The awards ceremony, which is done in association with MultiChoice and Amstel Malta, will be held in Lagos on Saturday, March 8, and will be screened live on DStv and GOtv to over 50 countries on the continent.

M-Net Africa’s Managing Director of Special Projects Biola Alabi, said “IK and Vimbai did a tremendous job of hosting the inaugural AMVCAs. We are confident that with the addition of Osas, this dynamic team will once more keep this exciting and fast-paced live event running smoothly. With more viewer-voted categories, the launch of the New Era Award and a sensational new stage, the latest edition of these awards should be bigger and better.”

She disclosed that TV personality, Denrele Edun, will be working the turquoise carpet.

Commenting on the show, IK said, “The mileage the show attracts makes it a blessing to be nominated, let alone win. Also, one of my favourite categories is the Trailblazer Award, the continent’s first simultaneous look at new and developing talents. Also, one of the things I loved last year was seeing the really glamorous outfits.”

In his view, co-host Vimbai of StarGist said, “The evening is a reminder of how much work, passion and commitment goes into film and TV. Also, the nominees have helped drive African films into contemporary culture and modernity in so many ways. So, it will be great to see who takes the first New Era Award.”

Interestingly, enthusiastic Osas said, “I enjoyed every moment of the AMVCA’s last year and I am very excited about this year’s show. Being in a room full of beautiful African stars celebrating amazing works and knowing it will be broadcast all over Africa is nothing short of a blessing and I can’t wait. The AMVCA’s certainly exudes quality and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Twenty nine laurels in 27 categories will be awarded with the recipients of the Industry Merit Award, the New Era Award and the TrailBlazer Award also to be announced.

According to the organizers, there are 137 nominations from across 80 productions this year vying for awards.

SuperSport GM urges club owners to do more marketing

The General Manager, DStv/SuperSport, West Africa, Felix Awogu, on Tuesday urged clubs participating in the 2013/ 2014 DSTV/Men’s Basketball League to take advantage of the satellite broadcast to market their clubs.

Awogu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the 16 clubs participating in the league should use the platform to source for funds.

NAN reports that DStv/SuperSport, the sponsors of Nigeria’s Men Elite Basketball League, upwardly reviewed a four-year contract with the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) from N150 million to N218 million from 2013 to 2016.

The league features 16 clubs – eight clubs from each of the Savannah and Atlantic conferences.

“The basketball matches are broadcast on our cable channel, and we have millions of viewers throughout Africa. The clubs have the right to market themselves, most especially by their jerseys bearing the names of their sponsors.

“They can also take advantage of their home games, collect gate fees and create avenues that will bring more fans to come and watch their games. They should be business-oriented and should not expect us to do everything for them,’’ Awogu said.

According to him, in the previous season, Dodan Warriors of Lagos brought more value to themselves with jersey sponsorship.

“Dodan Warriors, in the last season had sponsors of its jersey. We also heard they had some foreign connections that were interested in promoting them. Club owners should be busy doing business with their franchise because they also play a key role in developing the league and investing in young talents,’’ he said.

There was no dull moment at the DSTV Children’s Day Party held at the Landmark Village, Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos last Saturday.

The event was also used by the firm to announce plans to launch the DSTV Club for children and teenagers in July.
