  • Rivers: Lulu-Briggs wants Governorship, Assembly polls cancelled

Chief Dumo Lulu- Briggs, the Accord Party gubernatorial candidate in Rivers, has called for the cancellation of the March 9 Governorship and House of Assembly elections for lack of credibility.

Lulu-Briggs made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

He said that the call was necessitated by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) testimony on the gross electoral misconduct and insecurity that led to cancellation of elections in several polling units in the state.

The politician said that the subsequent suspension of the process was enough reason to ask for a fresh election in the state.

“What is most important is the credibility of the electoral process and legitimacy of any government.

“Remember that on March 9, INEC had issued a press statement that reports from their men on the field indicated that there were wide spread irregularities and violence in substantial polling units and collation centres.

“That INEC staff was taken hostage and materials, including result sheets were destroyed by unauthorised persons.

“And that they could no longer vouch for the credibility of the electoral process.

“INEC having raised such an alarm in this sort of atmosphere, the various party agents went back to their houses,” he said.

Lulu-Briggs said it was disheartening that INEC was now saying that they have some results they intend to collate and announce, tell me how credible such result could be?

“Even if they are authentic results, what confidence will the people have in the electoral umpire who kept the acclaimed results without the monitoring of party agents?

“It’s said that justice should not only be done but should also be seen to have been done,’ Lulu-Briggs said.

The Accord party candidate said that whatever INEC intended to do outside conducting a fresh election in the state could cause mayhem.

He said that since INEC openly admitted that they could no longer vouch for the credibility of the process they should conduct a fresh poll to avert crises in the state.

  • ‘Why Wike is afraid of Lulu-Briggs’

Amidst debate on the possibility of the All Progressive Congress (APC) missing out on the Rivers state governorship contest in March, The Accord Party (AP) in Rivers state is facing legal hurdles after a claimant to the party’s ticket for the March guber election dragged it to court. In this interview, Dason Nemieboka, spokesperson to Dumo Lulu-Briggs, says the intra-party crisis is being sponsored by those afraid of the political weight of Lulu-Briggs. Excerpts.

What is your feeling on the legal action against Briggs’ candidacy? Sincerely, we would have ignored this completely if we were operating in a different clime. However, with the Nigerian politician, you know that there can be an attempt to blindfold even God. Our preliminary findings and the inconsistency of the claimant points to the fact that he is serving an interest beyond his comprehension. If and when we are duly served the court processes, we shall respond adequately. However, I am certain that the only beneficiary of this distractive tactics would be the judiciary and the press.

Both the claimant and his paymasters would discover that these distractive blocks thrown at Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs will become building blocks and steps to victory.

The truth is that, the sponsors would be shocked that their very effort at distracting the focused Accord Party and her credible governorship candidate would be the reason why even their members, including commissioners, would flood the Accord party soon.

Chief Lulu Briggs is focused on his work. He is disturbed that Rivers people would continue to tolerate bad leadership until May 28. He is disturbed that the people would live under selfish rulers for the period but not whether the judiciary would stoop to be used by accidental powerful men. He has never doubted the courage and integrity of the courts, he knows that once a judge looks into the case he would throw it out and award cost against the plaintiff, for attempting to manipulate the law to get what he doesn’t deserve. Our judges are wise.

Why then is your principal dodging service of court papers as being alleged by the claimant?

That is laughable. Chief Dumo is clearly the most accessible governorship candidate in Rivers State. We are not going to apply dirty tricks because flooring the incumbent on March 2nd is a rather simple task. Anyone who claims that he couldn’t serve processes is economical with the truth. I think that is the agenda create false impressions in an attempt to mislead voters.

We know what they are up to and we shall shock them. I think rather than ask a man who is sacrificing to liberate us, we should ask our political tormentors why they are attempting to block the only true challenger they have Their tormentors are those who have vowed to arrest massive development in Rivers State, those who spend hundreds of billions of our commonwealth without recourse to any budget. Those who rule by spreading fear and insecurity, instead of curbing it.

They are those who forced themselves on Rivers people and are now worried that God has sent a man to deliver, liberate and stimulate blessings. It is clear that they are afraid of any fair contest. They fear that the dwindling public image can’t secure electoral victory. They are afraid of Dumo Lulu Briggs’ towering personality, hence the attempt to get him out of the race by the back door. Governor Wike clearly dreads a contest against Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs.

Why do you think your is considered a threat when they are countless others?

Do not tell me about scores of political parties or candidates, for us in Rivers State the choice is between going in one accord which is the new and better order, and continuing in the dark days of primitive rulership. Accord is the fastest growing party in Rivers State. The candidate is the most popular and most loved politician in the state and other parties are losing members daily to Accord. So why won’t a desperate party attempt to stop Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs and the Accord party in Rivers State, where a governor would build a motor park and invite angels to commission.

Rivers people seek an exposed and compassionate leader who knows the people. They want Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs and so Governor Wike knows that he will be an ex-governor as long as Dumo is on the ballot. DLB as they call him is creating jobs even as a private citizen, he is reducing poverty, and he is educating indigent students in the LGAs. He plans to develop multiple streams of income for the state; tourism, agriculture and industrialization would be the highpoints of the incoming administration. We are worried that Rivers State has the highest rate of unemployment and the current administration is

  • Lulu-Briggs: Rivers and the people

For the people of Rivers State and those who have been opportune to interact with him, nothing could best describe him than an extra-ordinary philanthropist and perfect gentleman, a personification of undiluted humanness and complete example of leadership symbolism.

Chief Barrister Dumo Lulu-Briggs is a cynosure of all eyes, his love for supporting the ‘seemingly neglected’ people in the society speaks volume.

DLB as he is popularly known in the political circle made a bold appearance into the Rivers State political scene far back in 1992 and by the year 2003, he had the ticket to contest the governorship election on the platform of the National Democratic Party (NDP) when he contested with the former Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili.

Though he lost the election then, the Kalabari-born business mogul and grassroots mobiliser had been touring places doing good to people who came in contact with him. Dumo is loved by his people and generally admired by all, his mien speaks volume. DLB has touched so many lives to the admiration of many. He has also rescued many from the shackles of poverty and given them a new lease of life.

Dumo abhors corruption; he is selfless, respectful and God-fearing man whose love for service to the people is sacrosanct. His political support base cuts across the 23 local government areas of Rivers State.

A survey conducted recently in Port Harcourt indicates that Dumo is far ahead of other philanthropists in terms of enhancing the well-being of his people. Dumo has never been indicted with any form of corruption or linked to any form of dubious tendencies; be it cultism-related or politically-motivated.

Dumo is a man who always has the penchant for championing the course of Rivers State students and so many other groups. In 2003, even before he made a landmark appearance in the Rivers State governorship race, DLB sponsored thousands of Rivers students in tertiary institutions till they successfully completed their education. He is committed to enhancing the welfare of the poor.

While other politicians who seem to be gunning for the Brick House in 2019 are busy gathering people for a bottle of Schnapps and Whisky, Dumo is channelling his hard-earned resources to building human capacity. His group, Dumo Support Group, is found in every nook and cranny of Rivers State providing support for the downtrodden and other physically challenged people.

Most people in the state believe that a man who is tirelessly giving hope to the hopeless deserves a place in the political arena. They maintain that if DLB is given the opportunity to serve his people, he would deploy his wealth of experience to serve the people and they will be happy.

For him, he is alive in order to serve humanity. His mien tells it all and his humanitarian services are being acknowledged by all.

Victor Nlerem, a political strategist described DLB as God-fearing and fit for the position of governor of Rivers State.

Nlerem said: “Since 1999 when I came in contact with him, Dumo had been in the business of giving out scholarships from secondary to tertiary students in the 23 local government areas of the state.

“He is a man with passion for excellence in everything he does. I’m sure he will be ready to bring that to bear if given opportunity to serve his people. I think he deserves an opportunity to serve and I have no doubt he would perform and restore the glory of the Garden City.”

Majority of the people believe that with Dumo’s wealth of experience and successes recorded in the field of business, the rate of unemployment will reduce, even as security challenges prevalent in the oil-rich state will be nipped in the bud.

Dumo had maintained: “The true worth of a man is not in the millions of naira in his coffers or wealth accumulated; it is in the way he treats people who are absolutely in need. If you care about people in need, you are actually making a contribution to the development of a nation. We need to give back to the people. Democracy is important in governance.

“We need to see how we can use the available resources to care for people, create employment for all, especially for those who are truly in need. The gap between the poor and the rich should be bridged. Those of us blessed with material resources need to share with others, we must strike a balance with our resources.”

According to credible sources in Rivers State, Dumo’s defection to the Accord Party (AP) signifies good omen to the people of Rivers State. Already, majority  of the people in Rivers State are of the opinion that this is the time the people require most the services of DLB. They believe Dumo’s presence in the party will, no doubt, elicit victory for them come 2019 considering his charisma and versatility in human capacity building.

According to Chinwe Ohaka, a member of the Accord Party in Rivers State, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs is a force to reckon with. Ohaka said a vote for Dumo in 2019 is a vote in the right direction.

Hear him: “As a business man, who has successfully managed his business empire very well, DLB can manage the resources of Rivers State very well. During my unionism days, we paid him a visit and he empowered us very well. He showed us love; he gave us support and provided us with a 14-seater bus, even when the then governor could not provide us with a bus.

“Dumo gave us sets of computers to equip our students’ business centre. For me, DLB is the most qualified person to occupy the Rivers State Government House because he understands the problem of the people and he can confront challenges, particularly the menace of insecurity.

“Dumo can reach out to ‘those boys’ and speak their language. Dumo is truthful and generous to a fault. This is the right time we will in One Accord give him our support because we know that he would salvage us and lead us to the Promised Land “, he said.
