    Court grants Sule Lamido bail on self-recognition

    Magistrate court 2 sitting in Dutse on Thursday granted bail to the former Jigawa state governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido on self-recognition.

    The former governor is standing trial on four count charges that bothers inciting disturbance, criminal deformation, criminal intimidation and disturbance of public peace which is contrary to sections 113, 114, 394 and 397 of the final code of Jigawa state.

    Lamido was granted unconditional bail on self-recognition as former governor who was democratically elected.

    In his ruling the presiding judge, magistrate, Usman Muhammed Lamin said all allegations against the accused person are ordinary bailable under section 341 of Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

    Lamin in his ruling also rejected a submission by the prosecution counsel objecting the bail application by the defending counsel.

    According to him; “the prosecution fail to convince the court to denied the accuse person bail on their claim that the accuse release may course break of peace in the state.”

    “Based on the provisions of the law, power and right of this honourable court the accused person is granted bail on self-recognition,” said the magistrate.

    He added; ” I hereby adjoining the case to 5th July 2017 for hearing.”

  • Teacher nabbed for burning company’s vehicle

    The Police in Jigawa on Tuesday arrested a 20-year-old teacher for allegedly burning a Volkswagen Bus belonging to company in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.

    The police Spokesman, Mr Jinjiri Abdu, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse.

    Abdu said the suspect, (Names withheld), a junior secondary school teacher, allegedly used petrol and matches and set the bus ablaze.

    He explained that the vehicle belonged to a company called Skin Defense, producers of medicated soap in Kano State.

    He said the suspect committed the offence on April 10 in Kwaimawa village when the company’s representative was conducting sales promo for a medicated soap in the village.

    “The suspect burnt the bus after his mother participated in the promo and won a body lotion.

    “The mother later demanded that the lotion be replaced with wrapper or N500, but the company declined.

    “After the bus moved to another place, this man went and brought petrol and matches which he allegedly used to set the bus ablaze.

    “And there were items worth N1 million that got burnt in the bus, and both the bus and items were valued at N1.5 million,” the police spokesman said.

    He said investigation into the matter had commenced after which the suspect would be charged to court.

    No fewer than 14 people were reportedly dead and domestic Animal  had been lost in fire out breaks and flood disaster ravage some parts of Jigawa state.

    Speaking to news men in Dutse the executive secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Relief Agency, Alhaji Yusif Sani Babura said “from last quarter of the 2015 to dates 14 people died in different fire out breaks and flood disaster in the state, while domestic animal and foods items worth millions of Naira where also lost”.

    Alhaji Yusif Sani Babura explained that “10 people died in the fire disaster while flood killed four people and many others sustained injuries during the disaster”.

    According to him “those died in fire were more in number, which include some children on one family, while the flood coursed the collapse of buildings which falls on the decease and pass away”.

    The executive secretary said “already Governor Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar approve the release of substantial amount to the relations of the decease and victims of the disasters to relieve the pains”.

    He further disclosed that “just last week we received a reports of flood in about eight local government areas where victims lost domestic animals, food items and farm produce. We sent our staff to visit the area and assess the level damage to reports to the governor for action”.

    Alhaji Babura maintained that the agency reported to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) “and NEMA respondent immediately and sent its official and also visited the affected areas”.

    The executive secretary expressed concern on the approach and lackadaisical attitude by the local government council, “most of them are not given the needs and necessary response when there is a disaster in their area”.

    Not less than 14 people have been confirmed died on a fire disaster and building collapsed last month in Jigawa state

    This was disclosed by the state’s executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Sani Yusuf Babura while fielding question to news men in Dutse, said “10 people died as a result of fire disaster and four others lost their lives as a result of building collapse”.

    He added that the disaster of the fire outbreak was aggregated following the recent windstorm in the state, noting that the rural dwellers must desist from storing hay and constalk in their houses.

    The Executive Secretary warned the people in the state, particularly the farmers against storing farm by products considered inflammable in their houses, saying instead such by products should be stored in the farm.

    According to him, his agency was also warned those that were relocated to save places must remain where they were relocated to, saying government would not take it lightly with any community that refused to heed to the warning.

    “At the beginning of this raining season 14 people died in fire disaster and building collapsed. Storing of hay and constalk aggravated the recent fire disaster in the state.

    We are therefore warning against storage of such farm by products in houses.”

  • Subsidy removal: Jigawa Police Boss summons, meets NLC

     

    The Jigawa state Police Commissioner summoned the leadership of the state’s branch of  Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and held an emergency meeting in respect of the proposed nationwide industrial strike action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) tomorrow.

    Briefing news men in his office shortly after the emergency meeting with labour union, the police commissioner, Alhaji Usman Abdullahi Tilli said the NLC in the state assured him that peace will remain in the state.

    “I called them in respects of the planned labour actions against the fuel price increased by the federal government, we discussed extensively and I categorically told them that if they cannot suspend the action, they must be sure that criminals did not takes advantage of their activities to disrupts peaceful coexistence of the state”, he said.

    Tilli stated further that “the police is more than ready to protects the lives and property of people and we have more than enough manpower and materials to handle any security challenge in the state during and after the Nigeria Labour Congress activities”.

    He therefore called on the public to be peaceful and law abiding, “they should also be assisting us with useful information, as peace and security is the responsibility of every one”.

    Canoe mishap: Jigawa distributes life jacket to canoe operators

    The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) disbursed 300 pieces of life Jackets to canoe operators along the riverine communities  in the state.

    Distributing the life Jackets in Dorawa river crossing points in Jahun Local Government Area,  Executive Secretary of SEMA, Alhaji Sani Yusuf Babura said the Jackets cost the state government over N2,5 million.

    The executive secretary explained that there are 300 pieces of life jackets, out of 50 were for children.

    Alhaji Sani Yusuf Babura stated that the present governor Badaru Abubakar led administration made it compulsory to any canoe operator and all passengers on board most use the jacket, adding that “it is against the law to any operator to carry more than eight passengers per trip”.

    He maintained that a full passenger load per trip is supposed to be 10 persons, but reduced it to be eight in order to give space for those carrying load.

    According to him, the life Jackets were going to be distributed to 44 canoe operators, each would get eight pieces, said this is the first phase of the intervention programme and that the personal of the agency were in the field with a view to identify more river crossing points so that more of the life jackets would be distributed.

    He further stated that any canoe operator who refused to use or give his passengers the life jackets during crossing or traveling on water would be dealt with, saying a proposal had since been forwarded to the state House of Assembly for a legislature on possible law to take care of the violators.

    Babura stressed that each of the life jackets has the capacity  of keeping 200kiligram object afloat and that each of the jacket has a whistle and reflectors, saying in the night the reflectors would aid the rescue team to trace a victim while the whistle was expected to attract  the attention of the rescue team.

    “we have distributed 300 pieces of life jackets to 44 canoe operators. Each of the operator was given eight pieces of
    life jackets which is equivalent to a full passenger load of a canoe. It is now a law that no canoe operator would take more than eight passengers in a conoe while either crossing or travelling on the river in Jigawa state.” He said.

    Jigawa sacks 27 pilgrims welfare officers

    The Jigawa Government has approved the termination of appointment of all Pilgrims Welfare Officers in the 27 local government areas of the state.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Adamu Abdulkadir, in Dutse on Wednesday.

    It stated that the termination was with immediate effect, and commended the welfare officers for their contributions toward the successful conduct of 2015 Hajj exercise.

  • Federal varsity, Dutse holds maiden convocation

    The Federal University, Dutse in Jigawa State is set to hold her maiden convocation on Saturday.

    The Registrar, Malam Yusuf Adamu said in a statement that the convocation, would feature the installation of the Chancellor, the Aku Uka of Wukari, Dr Shekarau Angyu, Masa Ibi Kuvyon II, as well as award of degrees and prizes at the convocation square of the institution’s permanent site in Dutse.

    He said about 71 students from the faculties of Arts and Social Sciences and Sciences would graduate at the event. The first set of students were admitted into the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences; Agriculture; and Science in 2012.

    Jigawa to begin rural telephone programme

    The Jigawa Government said on Tuesday that it had put in place appropriate machinery to provide rural telephone services to enhance quality telecommunication services in the state.

    Governor Badaru Abubakar, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse, noted that the rural telephone services would be provided through optimum utilization of the state-owned Galaxy Communication Company.

    The governor said that when operational, the telephone service would use the platform of the company to provide Information and Communication (IT) to Dutse and other major towns in the state.

    “We are reviving Galaxy; we have so far reactivated our licence and we will be providing network services in the state capital with the hope of extending to all major towns and also expand to rural telephony in the state,” he said.

    Abubakar said that the measure was part of his move to encourage growth of IT education and enhance effective utilization of the facilities for the social and economic development of the state.

    NAN reports that Galaxy Communication Company was established by Jigawa government in 2005, to fast- track the implementation of its IT development programme.

    The Federal Government, however, took over the company a few years after its creation.

    Corpse discovered in Dutse

    Presidents of Dutse Sokale in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were taken aback when they discovered the corpse of an unidentified woman that was dumped in the area.

    Eyewitnesses said the woman in her late 30s, was discovered by passersby at the early hours of Wednesday, adding that the body was dumped behind a building.

    Residents, who heard about the incident, thronged the area for possible identification of the corpse. None could identify her until a woman, Mama Sokale, arrived at the scene. She immediately fainted on seeing the corpse. The residents made frantic efforts to revive her. When she came to a start, she explained that the corpse was her sister, Felicia who had come from Kaduna to visit her.

    She stated that her sister had arrived on Tuesday from Kaduna without prior information, adding that she had left her in her shop following the erratic behaviour of some youths who were celebrating the victory of Gen. Buhari as Nigeria’s President-elect.

    “She arrived at my shop from Kaduna. I did not know she was coming. She told me that she was coming from a burial. When the news came that Gen. Buhari had won the presidential election, I was scared by the way the youth were celebrating. I told my sister that we should go home,” she said.

    Mama Sokale further stated that her sister told her that she was waiting behind to see someone; promising to close the shop when she had seen the person.

    “I went home and I waited for my sister and she did not come back. I was wondering what happened. I did not know that this is what I will experience today. Someone just called me that there was a corpse and I came, only to see that it is my sister,” she said.

    Abuja Review gathered that there was no blood stain or any wound on the body, which might mean that the woman was strangled. The police came to the scene around 9:30 a.m. to pick-up the corpse to the mortuary.
