  • LASU gets DVC

    Professor Adewale Olumuyiwa K. Noah of the Faculty of Education, Lagos State University (LASU) has emerged as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor, (Academics) of the institution.

    Noah polled 75 votes to beat Prof Senapon Bak’re of the Faculty of Sci-ence who got 29. Two votes were declared null and void.

    A total of 106 ballot papers were circulated to accredited members of the University Senate who voted at the election.

    Noah will serve for two years with effect from August 25.

     

  • DVC tasks corps members

    The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) UNILORIN, Prof. N.Y.S. Ijaiya, has charged prospective corps members to learn from their predecessors who have contributed immensely to the development of the country.

    Prof. Ijaiya made the call last Monday at the inauguration of a computer set donated by a 2014 Batch ‘C’ of corps member, Mrs. Folajimi Elizabeth, to the Department of Adult and Primary Education.

    The DVC noted that the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme was designed not only to enhance national cohesion, but also to accelerate the growth of the nation’s economy.

    She said the gesture showed Folajimi understood the essence of the NYSC scheme.

    In his remarks, the Head of the Department of Adult and Primary Education, Dr. Henry Owolabi, praised Folajimi, describing her as a good ambassador of the University.

    Replying, Mrs. Folajimi, who is an alumnus of the university, said she was motivated to embark on the project because she is the first corps member to serve in the new Department.

    How DVC, son, four others died in road crash

    FATHER and son parted ways in Lagos on Sunday, with plans of reuniting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, for the Eid-El-Kabir celebrations.

    But it turned out to be the last time that AbdulAzeez would see his father, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor-designate of Fountain University, Osogbo, Prof. Abdul Hakeem Mobolaji alive.

    The professor of Econometrics died in an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Express way, with his 14-year-old son, Muhammad.

    He left for Ibadan after a meeting in Ijeshatedo, Lagos on Sunday.

    With him in his black Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) were his sons – the late Muhammad and Abdul-Hafiz – and a friend, Mr Abdul-Rasheed Attah, a lawyer.

    A passenger bus rammed into the late Mobolaji’s SUV after overtaking another vehicle on the narrow road. The road had been partitioned by the contractor working on it.

    [ad id=”403656″]The late Mobolaji, who drove, and Muhammad died on the spot. Attah and the late Mobolaji’s second son, AbdulHafiz were injured.

    Attah immediately called a relative and gave his phone to a woman to inform the person of the accident.

    Shortly after, he and Abdul Hafiz went into a coma.

    The Nation learnt that four persons, including the bus driver also died. Many passengers broke their legs.

    The late Mobolaji and his son were on Monday buried in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State.

    Thousands of people attended the funeral.

    Abdul Azeez described his father as the bread winner of the family.

    He said: “Who will take care of us now that he is late? I was expecting to link up with him at Fountain University today (Monday). I was calling his phone on Sunday when I didn’t hear from him whether he has reached Ibadan where he was expected to pick other family members but he wasn’t picking his calls. I called him severally up to 30 times but no one is picking the call. I called the MD of Al Barakah Microfinance Bank to tell him that I have been calling my father but he was not picking his call that he should help me call him but later he came back with some people to announce his death that Allah has taken him back. I pray to Almighty Allah to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss because he was the bread winner of the family and no one else.”

    The late Mobolaji was said to have delivered a lecture at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), on Saturday, and came to Lagos for a meeting. He hailed from Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, and joined Fountain University from the University of Ilorin, where he was a Senior Lecturer and Postgraduate Coordinator.

    Described as a respected teacher, the late Mobolaji was a consultant to the 7th National Assembly and several other institutions including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on economics matters.

  • DVC lauds Rotary on donation

    The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), AAUA, Prof Oluyemisi Adebowale, has praised the Rotary Club of Akungba, Ondo State, Nigeria, for donating books to pupils of the university’s staff school. Adebowale, who represented the VC at the event, thanked Rotary for the kind gesture and encouraged other clubs and individuals to follow suit.

    The DVC said: “On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and the management of Adekunle Ajasin University, I appreciate the Rotary Club of Akungba for this initiative and act of charity. The university is appreciative of this. I want to sincerely commend the club and encourage other clubs and individuals to emulate this gesture and reach out to the children and the needy around us.”

    The President of Rotary Akungba, Rotarian Olu Fawehinmi, promised that the club would continue to render support to AAUA from time to time.

    The head teacher of the staff school, Mr. J.O. Ehineni, who collected the 250 exercise books on behalf of the school, promised to use the books judiciously.

    The Deputy Vice- Chancellor (DVC), Ekiti State University (EKSU) Prof Olufemi Adeoluwa, has asked the youths to be honest and painstaking in whatever they do.

    He said this while exchanging views with pupils of Peace and Joy Group of Schools, Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

    Adeoluwa said youths should have the fear of God, stressing that nothing can be achieved without His grace.

    He told them that the teaching profession is rewarding when professionalism is applied.

    The pupils had asked him various questions bordering on life experience.

    The pupils led by Mr Akinbote Abiodun came from classes in primary to Junior Secondary School.

  • Former DVC speaks on HCD

    The immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of (UNILORIN), Prof  Raheem Lawal, has called on university authorities nationwide to develop a formal mentoring programme for their workers to boost human capital development and guarantee unbroken chain of worthy successors from generation to generation.

    Lawal, who made this recommendation at the UNILORIN management retreat in Omu-Aran, Kwara State, said mentoring is at the core of sustainability of the academic culture and ethical orientation of any university.

    He said: “A mentoring programme is a sine qua non in any university aspiring to continuously discharge her mandate as faithfully as possible from one generation of academic managers to another.”

     

     

    Lawal explained that mentoring programme has come to stabilise as a hallmark of the academic culture in most top-class universities in the world.

    The retreat, themed: “Enhancing Productivity of Academic Managers in the 21st Century University”, was organised by the Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT).

     

     

    “To run efficient and sustainable mentoring programmes, organisers should ensure sustainability based on institutional vision and mission as enshrined in the university’s strategic plan. Goals should be clearly articulated and the programme must be supported with documented regulations and procedures even as   responsibilities for all parties involved… are also clearly documented.”

  • DVC for UI

    Prof. Gbemisola Oke of the Department of Periodontology and Community Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (UI), has been elected as the institution seventh Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)  .

    The Director of Public Communications, Olatunji Oladejo, said the new deputy vice-chancellor replaced Prof. Idowu Olayinka, whose tenure ended on December 16, last year.

    He said Oke, the former Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation,is the second woman to occupy the position.

    In a statement, Oladejo  said the new DVC (Academics) graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 1981 and had a Master of Public Health (MPH) from University of California, Los Angeles in 1985.

    Prof. Oke, the statement added, got a PhD in Community Medicine/ Epidemiology from UI.

    She is married to Prof. Bankole Oke of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Faculty of Veterinary Anatomy, UI.

  • Nasarawa varsity gets DVCs, directors

    The Vice-Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), Prof Muhammad Mainoma, has appointed two Deputy Vice-Chancellors (DVCs) and five directors.

    At a Senate meeting, the VC announced the appointment of Prof Yakubu Ngwai, who was the Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, as DVC on Administration and Dr Sa’adatu Liman, who was the Head of the Department of Islamic Religious Studies, DVC Academics.

    Prof Mainoma also approved the establishment of two new institutes and three directorates for the university. They are Institute of Governance and Development Studies, to be headed by Prof Sani Abdullahi, Institute of Education to be headed by Prof James Otuka, who is a past DVC on Academics.

    Prof Olayemi Akinwumi of the Department of History was appointed as the Director of Directorate of Research and Publications, while Dr Suleiman Nchi of the Faculty of Law is the Director of Quality Assurances and Advancement.

    Prof Fati Shuaibu of the Department of Educational Foundations was appointed as the head of the Directorate of Guidance and Counseling.

  • New DVCs resume

    The newly-appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, FUNAAB, Prof Mufutau Adekojo Waheed, has assumed duties.

    Prof Felix Kolawole Salako, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development, who was re-appointed, has also resumed.

    In a statement, the Registrar, Mr Matthew Ayoola, noted that the university’s Governing Council approved their appointments for a period of two years on the recommendations of the Senate.

    Until his appointment, Waheed, a Professor of Thermofluids, was the Director of Academic Planning.

    The don, who is from Ogbomoso, attended Ajaawa Baptist Grammar School, between 1978 and 1983, and the University of Ilorin, where he obtained B.Eng (Hons) and M.Eng in Mechanical Engineering in 1990 and 1995. He gained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Aachen University of Technology, Germany, in 2001.

    Waheed worked at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso from 1992 to 2008 before joining FUNAAB the same year.

    At FUNAAB, Waheed has served at various levels, including Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering; Member, Postgraduate Board; Deputy Dean, College of Engineering; member, Committee on National Institutional Ranking as well as Committee on the Preparation of Proposal for Community Radio and Internet Radio Station.

    On his part, Salako, who hails from Ibadan in Oyo State, is aProfessor of Soil Physics. He attended the Igbobi College, Lagos; University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he obtained his B. Agric (Hons) and M.Sc degrees in Soil Science (1983 and 1986), and he University of Ibadan, where he bagged his PhD Degree in Soil Science in 1997.
