  • Onazi backs Eagles to shine again

Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has told AfricanFootball.com the new Super Eagles under coach Sunday Oliseh will qualify for the 2017 AFCON.

Onazi has been recalled to the Super Eagles after he served a suspension due to the red card he received against Chad in an AFCON qualifier in June.

He said it is always a great moment when he plays for Nigeria and believes the new team under Oliseh will make Nigerians proud again.

“Playing for Nigeria is always special to me. We are building a young, new and dynamic team right now and it will be nice to use the two friendly games to build some sort of momentum. I’m confident we are on track to become a better team and qualify for AFCON 2017,” he told AfricanFootball.com

“We will work hard collectively as usual and pray harder to get our target which is the AFCON 2017 ticket so we can make our lovely and loyal fans proud of us, and be proud of ourselves.”

    • Hails Ikeme, others

Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Alloy Agu has insisted that Vincent Enyeama is still relevant in the national team.

The Lille of France shot-stopper opted out of last weekend’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania to mourn the death of his mother.

In Enyeama’s absence, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Carl Ikeme was in goal for Super Eagles as his national team debut.

Ikeme was in superb form as he made fantastic saves to deny the East Africans in the match to help the Eagles secured a point in the 0-0 draw at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

Agu in a chat with SportingLife said Enyeama’s experience is still valuable to the team while he commended Ikeme for his outstanding performance in the game against Tanzania.

He added that Ikeme’s inclusion in the Eagles goalkeeping department has made it very competitive.

He said other goalkeepers like Ikechukwu Ezenwa of Sunshine Stars of Akure and Femi Thomas of Enyimba are also doing well in the team.

“Enyeama is still a respected figure in that department,” Agu told SportingLife.

“Enyeama is one of the best goalkeepers in Africa and Nigeria in particular and we respect him for who he is. The good thing about Ikeme’s arrival in the team is that it has allowed more competition in that department. We love it this way because it will allow more seriousness in the goalkeepers.

“Ikeme’s performances so far is commendable and he showed more professionalism in the way he handled the things.  Other goalkeepers too have potential to do good for the Eagles. It is a new era and we are building a future team for the national team.”

Ikeme made his second game against Niger in an international friendly match played yesterday. He was replaced by Ikechukwu Ezenwa towards the end of the game in the 2-0 win over Niger Republic

  • Eagles door still open for Mikel-Oliseh

Eagles door still open for Mikel-Oliseh

In his post-match comments immediately after Nigeria beat Niger 2 – 0 in an international friendly on Tuesday afternoon, coach Sunday Oliseh has hinted that he will not invite John Obi Mikel to the national team if he keeps sitting on the bench.

The Nigeria manager omitted the Chelsea midfielder from his squad list announced for the Afcon qualifier against Tanzania and yesterday’s friendly after he claimed he was not able to speak to the player whilst in England on a scouting trip.

Asked if there’s still room for Mikel Obi and Victor Moses, Oliseh replied Supersport TV: “Yes there is room for everybody, all I am just asking them is we need them to have playing time.

“Like you see today everybody who played for Nigeria played for their respective clubs and at the same time they are showing the hunger.

“And the ones who played today have started picking up points, so obviously those coming will have to fight to get into the team but that’s what we want for Nigeria.”

Mikel has had only 6 minutes of game time so far this season from a possible 540 minutes.

    Pharoahs overthrow Eagles again

The Pharoahs of Egypt returned to the top of Group G of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier after mauling Chad 5-1 in N’Djamena yesterday.

As was the case after the first round of games last June, the Super Eagles who assumed temporary leadership of the log after holding the Taifa Stars of Tanzania to a goalless draw last Saturday are now second on the table.

The Egyptians, handled by former Inter Milan coach Hector Cuper, were truly rampant with Zamalek’s 24- year- old striker,Basem Morsi the star of the match after grabbing a hat trick in the encounter.

Morsi opened scoring for the Pharoahs as early as the second minute and followed it up by doubling the lead for his country in the 25th minute.

Ezechiel Ndouasel scored what later amounted to a consolation goal for the Les Sao of Chad in the 38th minute.

Roma winger,Mohammed Salah, however netted the the third goal for the North Africans in the 40th minute to end the first half with the Egyptians criusing to a comfortable 3-1 lead.

In the second half, the visitors continued to pile more pressure on the Chadians which paid off in the 57th minute when another Zamalek star,Mahmoud Kahraba grabbed the fourth goal for Egypt.

Morsi was to complete a brilliant afternoon for his team by scoring his hat trick in the 62nd minute.

With yesterday’s victory, the Egyptians now have maximum six points from two matches played so far and would face the Super Eagles in March next year in their next game.

  • Eagles consider Cameroon friendly in Europe

Nigeria have proposed a friendly against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon next month in Europe as coach Sunday Oliseh steps up rebuilding the Super Eagles.

The Eagles recorded a disappointing draw in Tanzania in a 2017 AFCON qualifier at the weekend in Oliseh’s first game in charge.

And a top official has informed AfricanFootball.com that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are working on the team to play a friendly against Cameroon in Europe early next month. There are two FIFA friendly windows left for this year – October 5 to 13 and November 9 to 17.

“The NFF are looking at getting the Eagles to face Cameroon in a friendly early next month and the game will most likely be played in Europe,” the official told AfricanFootball.com.

Both countries have clashed 19 times since April 1960.

Nigeria have won eight times and drawn seven times, while Cameroon were victorious on four occasions.

  • Eagles arrive Port Harcourt

The Super Eagles  landed in Port Harcourt after a four-hours-and-forty minutes flight  from Dar es Salaam, following Saturday’s 0-0 draw with the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations  (Afcon)qualifying match.

The delegation, led by NFF President Amaju Pinnick, arrived in the oil city at exactly 2am on Sunday, and the Eagles placed at the Hotel Presidential. On Tuesday, the Super Eagles tackle the Mena of Niger in an international friendly at the Adokiye Amiesieamaka Stadium.

On a day that Mauritania trounced South Africa and Liberia defeated Tunisia, in some of the shock results in Afcon qualifying race, the Super Eagles failed to break the resistance of the Taifa Stars, thereby earning only one point on the road. The situation in Group G will become clearer after the match between Le Sao of Chad and the Pharaohs of Egypt in N’djamena on Sunday.

Coach Sunday Oliseh gave new caps to goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who was truly impressive, as well as midfielders Izunna Uzochukwu and Sylvester Igboun and forward Emem Eduok.

Between them, the likes of defender Kingsley Madu, William Troost-Ekong, Obiora Nwankwo, Lukman Haruna, Anthony Ujah and Moses Simon can only talk of a few caps.

Captain Ahmed Musa, who only started out five years ago and has just about 51 caps, remains the most experienced player in the Super Eagles’ squad that drew on Saturday, alongside defender Kenneth Omeruo and forward Emmanuel Emenike.

“We came here with the objective of earning the three points, but that didn’t happen. It was my first match in charge of the team and I have learnt a few things which will definitely help us going forward,” Oliseh said at the end of the game.

The Super Eagles’ next game in the series is at home to the Pharaohs of Egypt  in March 2016.

  • Ikeme saves Eagles in Dar es Salaam

Ikeme saves Eagles in Dar es Salaam

TANZANIA’S Taifa Stars produced a stunning second half performance but failed to do enough to stun three-time African champions, Nigeria on match day two of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying.

Yesterday’s game at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam which finished 0-0 was Sunday Oliseh’s first after he replaced former coach, Stephen Keshi and he opted to hand 29-year-old goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme his competitive debut in place of Vincent Enyeama who asked to be excused from the tie following the death of his mother.

It turned out to be a master stroke as the Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper made no less than six stunning saves to prevent the Eagles from suffering a humiliating defeat.

FSV Mainz defender, Leon Balogun failed to recover from an ankle injury and was subsequently replaced by Solomon Kwambe.

William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo and Kingsley Madu were the other defenders handed starts against the Taifa Stars.

Obiora Nwankwo started ahead of the back four while Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon and Emmanuel Emenike started in more advanced positions ahead of midfielders, Izunna Uzochukwu and Lukman Haruna.

Nigeria threatened early on through Simon on the left but he was fouled as he raced past a defender and honed in on goal. He took the subsequent free kick himself but Emenike headed wildly from four yards.

The hosts then took control and Carl Ikeme had to be at his brilliant best in the 13th and 22nd minutes to keep the score line even.

His first save off an Mbwana Samata effort was particularly impressive as the Taifa Stars continued to show they were anything but intimidated by the storied credentials of their opponents.

The Super Eagles looked sluggish and lacking in co-ordination and Oliseh responded by substituting Haruna after just 35 minutes with striker, Sylvester Igboun taking the Anzhi man’s place and earning his debut as a result.

The hosts however continued to create the more dangerous openings with TP Mazembe man, Thomas Ulimwengu particularly outstanding.

Ahmed Musa’s free kick from range in the 24th minute represented Nigeria’s only effort on target in the half and the visitors knew they were lucky to still be on level terms at the break.

The Super Eagles started on the front foot in the second half and Emenike threatened from range in the 48th minute.

Musa’s pace continued to cause the hosts problems down the right hand channel and he burst through on 57 minutes only to be let down by an atrocious final touch.

Tanzania should have scored on the hour but Ikeme produced a save that defied logic to deny Ulimwengu from point blank range.

Oliseh responded by throwing on Werder Bremen attacker, Anthony Ujah for the tiring Emenike as Nigeria looked to rev the engine. It was the Taifa Stars that however came close to scoring the game’s first goal through Mrisho Ngassa, five minutes later but he managed to head wide when left unmarked from five yards.

Ulimwengu almost scored two minutes after Ngassa’s shocking miss but his low angled drive was impressively kept out by the exemplary Ikeme.

The Tanzanians dominated the rest of the half but were left to contemplate what might have been largely due to the brilliance of Ikeme. The point means Nigeria are still undefeated after the first two rounds of matches and now leapfrog Egypt as the new leaders of Group G. The Super Eagles have now amassed four points following their 2-0 win over Chad on match day one.

Egypt will overtake however overtake Nigeria at the summit of the standings if they defeat Chad on Sunday at Stade Omnisports Idriss Mahamat Ouya, N’Djamena.

Nigeria: Carl Ikeme; Solomon Kwambe, Kingsley Madu, William-Troost Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, Nwankwo Obiora, Haruna Lukman (Sylvester Igboun), Moses Simon (Emem Eduok 70′), Ahmed Musa, Izunna Uzochukwu, Emmanuel Emenike (Anthony Ujah 61′)

  • Eagles labour to stop Abuja College 3-0

Eagles labour to stop Abuja College 3-0

The Super Eagles did not look like a team primed to beat Tanzania in Dar es Salaam this weekend as they struggled to beat Abuja Football College in a test game at the Abuja National Stadium on Wednesday.

The Eagles under new coach Sunday Oliseh struggled for cohesion and did not play the high tempo passing game the coach promised his team will play.

They will have to do a lot more if they are to get a result at the high altitude Dar es Salaam on Saturday afternoon.

The first set of players led by skipper Ahmed Musa paraded home boys Solomon Kwambe at right back and Usman Mohammed in midfield.

They led by half time courtesy of a scrambled goal by Emmanuel Emenike, who led an attack that included Moses Simon prompted by a midfield packed with Rabiu Ibrahim.

Kenneth Omeruo partnered Troost-Ekong in the heart of the defence, just as they did against Chad in June in Kaduna.

For the second half, Godfrey Oboabona was skipper and this team scored twice. First through Antony Ujah and then Lukman Haruna.

Wolves of England goalkeeper Carl Ikeme looked safe in the Eagles goal with his imposing physique as he barked out commands to his defenders.

He will most certainly get his Eagles debut in Tanzania following the late withdrawal of skipper Vincent Enyeama as he played both halves of this match.

  • Eagles to train once in Dar es Salaam

Eagles to train once in Dar es Salaam

SUPER EAGLES head coach Sunday Oliseh and his players may only get one chance to feel the Dar es Salaam main Stadium before the Saturday fixture against Taifa Stars.

In what may be a spanner in the wheels of Super Eagles Coach, Sunday Oliseh’s plans for a good outing in his first competitive game as gaffer, its been revealed that the three -time Afcon winners may not have access to the National Stadium until 24-hours before kick-off time.

www.footballlive.ng confirmed in a chat with the newly appointed Media Officer of the Tanzania Football Federation, Baraka Kuziguto that because the visiting team are due  to arrive late on Thursday, they may only get a feel of the Main National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Coach Mkwasa has training scheduled for Thursday and also Friday before the official pre-match briefing scheduled for Friday morning.

Meanwhile, President of the Federation, Jamal Malinzi insists Saturday’s game will be about 11 determined players and not about big name players of the clubs they come from.

” We’ve played a number of games against some big names. We have played and beaten Morocco and beaten Algeria here, and we believe names don’t play football; its about 11 determined young lads it doesn’t matter which club you play or league you come from.”

  • Akpeyi still part of Eagles, says Agu

Nigeria goalkeeping coach Alloy Agu has stated that new Chippa United custodian Daniel Akpeyi still remains in the plans of the Super Eagles despite a change of guard.

Agu said Akpeyi is one of the goalkeepers  selected for the Nigerian men’s national team but was left out of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match with Tanzania to allow him settle down at his new club in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL).

“Akpeyi is one of the goalkeepers I have monitored in the league while he was with Warri Wolves, and even his performances in the friendly match (against South Africa) recently showed that he is one of our best and I believe that is why the club in South Africa signed him up.

“Like most of the players who were not invited for this game, Akpeyi is very much in our plans as we believe he can also provide competition in the goalkeeping department of the team. For now, we thought it best for him to settle down at his new team and then we can monitor his progress as well,” Agu told supersport.com.

He explained that Ikeme has been putting out impressive displays with Wolves in the English Championship, where he has made two appearances in their five league matches.

“Carl is a decent goalkeeper. He is among the most respected goalkeepers in England and he will certainly be a good addition to the team. As for Ikechukwu, he has spent a week with us and I can say he is one of the best in the league right now and certainly his future remains bright provided he keeps working hard to stay in good shape,” said Agu.
