Keshi sees potential in new Eagles

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi believes that the Super Eagles have the potential to rule Africa again after seeing his side dispatch a hard-fighting Chadian team 2-0 on Saturday, in a Group G 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

A Gbolahan Salami goal and an Odion Ighalo penalty gave the Super Eagles the maximum points and Keshi feels there is more to come from the team as they continue to gel.

“It was a tough game but I’m glad we came away with the three points,”Keshi said after the game.

“The defence played well, they were disciplined in their marking, they did what we practised in the training sessions.

“The first half was a bit off because the players were still getting to know each other, they were cautious because this was our second game together after the friendly against Kaduna United.

“There was a lot of anxiety, but we were a bit more relaxed in the second half. We had the possession and we controlled the game.

“The substitutions with Rabiu (Ibrahim) and Odion (Ighalo) made the team to start clicking and I hope we have more of that in the next couple of games,” he added

•CSKA Moscow star wants to sort out personal issues

CSKA Moscow forward, Ahmed Musa will not be reporting to the Super Eagles’ camp on June 3 like other foreign-based players invited for the 2017 African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifier against Chad.

SportingLife learnt that coach Stephen Keshi has granted an extended deadline to the pacy Eagles forward to enable him attend to some crucial personal issues.

It was gathered that the Big Boss also put into consideration the fact that Musa was in the thick of action just last weekend for his Russian Premier League club CSKA Moscow on the last day of the season, where they finished runners-up and picked a Champions League ticket.

The Army Team drew 1-1 at Rostov to end the season with 60 points from 30 games, same as third-placed Kransnodar, who also drew 1-1 at Dinamo Moscow, but CSKA Moscow have a superior goals difference of +40 to Kransnodar’s +25.

Keshi had earlier on granted another Eagles star based in China,Aaron Samuel the permission to arrive at the team’s AFCON camp late due to tedious club engagement in the Chinese Super League.

“As earlier stated, all the invited foreign-based players are expected in camp on or before June 3 with the exception of Ahmed Musa,” the Super Eagles’ media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, told SportingLife in a telephone interview from the national team’s camp in Abuja.

“Last week, the coach granted the request of Aaron Samuel’s club in China for the striker to arrive late to enable him play more games for them at the crucial stages of the Chinese Super League.

“Musa equally appealed to be excused for a few days to sort out pressing personal issues and the coach graciously gave his consent,” the Eagles spokesman stated.

What it means is that Musa, who scored 10 goals in the Russian League for CSKA Moscow in the outgone season, will join the Eagles’ camp after they may have relocated to Kaduna, venue of the match against Chad, on June 13.

  • All home-based players arrive for Eagles camp

All home-based players invited for preparations for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Le Sao of Chad have arrived at the team’s camp, sl10.ng can confirm.

Players from Warri Wolves joined the team on Saturday, after they helped their club to a 4-2 win over Abia Warriors in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game on Friday.

And with the exception of Mfon Udoh, who has been excused due to illness, all other invited players have now reported to the team’s camp.

Since commencing preparations for the Chad game, the team has only been training once a day, as against the usual morning and evening trainings, and Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi explains why.

“These players are already very active and busy with their clubs in the league, sometimes they even play twice in a week, so there is no wisdom in overloading them with two training sessions a day,” he said.

“What we need to do is to tone them up, increase their sharpness and work on team tactics, bonding and understanding. I am very happy with what I have seen of the boys and the quality of the training, and I can say it’s getting higher and better day by day,” he added.

Eagles call-up is a ‘priceless privilege’ – Pinnick

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Pinnick says he expects players invited to the Super Eagles to consider their call-up as a ‘priceless privilege’.

26 players are presently in the Eagles’ camp as they commence preparation for the 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Chad.

Although it has been reported that foreign-based players could be invited to the fold, Pinnick counselled the players against hasty decisions on honouring or turning down national call-ups.

”Whenever you see an invite for the Eagles, think of it as a privilege, a priceless privilege but you also have the right to turn it down and not honour.

”I have made the players understand that the first reaction to invitations or blacklisting is to meditate and set for themselves a purpose.”

    Sharks duo hail Eagles’ call-up

Sharks duo of Joseph Nathaniel and Chima Akas have hailed their invitation to the Super Eagles again and have promised to give good accounts of themselves when the camp opens on May 19.

Akas is a left full back while Nathaniel is a midfielder and both players have told SportingLife that they would be hitting camp to lend their support to the fall of Chad in a 2017 AFCON qualifier.

“I will be going to the Eagles’ camp with the self belief and confidence that Chad will fall next month. I will be going to the camp to contribute my quota towards that,” Akas told SportingLife.

  • Eagles to play in Kaduna due to fan turnout

Eagles to play in Kaduna due to fan turnout

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) wants the Super Eagles to have a large crowd of supporters when they face Le Sao of Chad in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier next month, and that is the reason they have chosen the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, SL10.ng can confirm.

Executive committee member of the NFF, Emeka Inyama, said they could have used the Abuja National Stadium but the often poor turnout of fans has been the deciding factor for them.

“The deciding factor has been the fan base. The Abuja Stadium hardly records huge turnouts but the opposite is the case in Kaduna.

“We want the team to play in front of a huge crowd and that is why we have chosen Kaduna,” he told SL10.ng.

The new Uyo Stadium has also recorded huge turnouts for the Eagles, even though results there have not been very favourable but Inyama said it didn’t factor in their decision. He added that the Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi also had an input in choosing the match venue.

“We have played some games in Uyo but this is a national team so we want to take our matches round the country. If it goes to the South, it comes to the North. And also we wanted the coach to have an input on where his team will play,” he said.

  • FIFA FREE WINDOW: EAGLES, ENGLAND CLASH LIKELY

FIFA FREE WINDOW: EAGLES, ENGLAND CLASH LIKELY

There are strong indications that Nigeria’s senior team, Super Eagles may confront England’s senior team at a yet-to-be agreed date and venue.

Indications to this likely clash which has been tentatively fixed for October 2015 emerged on Tuesday in London when the Chairman of The English Football Association, Mr. Greg Dyke pledged to do everything possible to promote collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Dyke spoke on Tuesday at a meeting with NFF President, Amaju Pinnick at the offices of The FA at Wembley Stadium, London.

Dyke immediately instructed that his aides should take it up with the department managing the England National Team, and promised to speak to manager Roy Hodgson about it. It was agreed that should the October date not be feasible, then there should be an England/Nigeria friendly at the next available opportunity.

Dyke, who promised to honour an invitation to visit Nigeria soon, expressed his interest in establishing strong relations internationally stressing that: “After we lost our 2018 Bid (to host the FIFA World Cup), it became apparent that we needed to build our international ties, and we need true friends, so I am very keen on this.”

At the meeting, Pinnick extolled the virtues of the FA, and his admiration for the English football culture, and not for the first time, spoke of his desire to build a sustainable football culture in Nigeria, telling his English counterpart that: “For many reasons, we have every reason to want to work with you. Apart from the fact that England colonised our country, and that London remains a first stop for many of our country’s people looking to sojourn abroad, we also see you as ideal and perfect role models against which we would want to build our game.”

Continuing, the Delta-born administrator said: “We admire the culture of football you have here.

“While you do not have the best results at international level, the football culture here is second to none, and we want to learn from you.”

Pinnick spoke of areas where he wanted collaboration with the FA, viz, working on technical support and development of Nigeria football, providing support and advise on all areas of administration and leadership.

Dyke spoke of his interest in Africa, stating that his wife, having spent many years in Uganda in the past, had influenced him to becoming a fan of the continent. In his words: “Anytime I go to Africa and I am leaving, I look back and tell myself – ‘I can live here’.”

Amaju Pinnick rounded up his visit by bringing to the notice of his English counterpart that the last time England played Nigeria in a friendly was more than 20 years ago. “We believe it is time we had an England/Nigeria match at Wembley, and we have done our homework and found that you have nothing on in the FIFA window in October,” he said.

Eagles camp will not be used to rehabilitate players – Pascal

Super Eagles Coordinator Patrick Pascal has described the second coming of Coach Stephen Keshi as a good omen for the country’s football saying this would be a period to rebuild the senior national team towards a greater future.

The former international, who spoke from Lafia, Nasarawa State where he had gone to watch a Premier League match, said  the coach has expressed his desire to rebuild the team with young players who are playing well in the local league. “This is not a situation where players who are no longer hungry, and have nothing again to contribute to the national team would be allowed to use the team as a resting place. Just like the coach has revealed, the home based players would enter the camp any moment from the second or third week of May, while their foreign counterparts would join the team one week to the encounter with Chad. We are watching the League, and I am very sure that Nigeians would have the course to smile again”.

The 1996 Olympic gold medalist expressed optimism that the Super Eagles would surely return to the zenith of African football in the shortest possible time “the Super Eagles would fly again, we have all it takes, and we would surely get back there,” he said.

  • Puma rejected Eagles — official

    Puma rejected Eagles — official

Top Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official, Emeka Inyama, has disclosed that Puma turned down the chance to kit three-time African champions Super Eagles.

“Puma turned down the chance to sponsor the Eagles and so it is the right step in the right direction that Nike came in after the adidas contract ended,” said Inyama, who is the NFF marketing committee chairman.

“Puma’s reluctance may not be far fetched because no reputable organisation wants to partner with you when your administration is not stable. You know the crisis we went through before now, the world is a global village and these things are known world wide.”

Inyama also disclosed that the three-and-half year deal with Nike is 90% value in kind.

The Nigeria Football Federation have already revealed that Nike would invest $2.75m in kit supply to all of the country’s national teams for the period of the contract.

“You know that contractual agreements are not discussed in public but for the sake of Nigerians and the clear insinuations that the NFF may be hiding the amount it would benefit from the deal, I can tell you that the contract with Nike is 90% value for kind,” Inyama further said.

“We are going to get kit supplies to the tune of $2.75 million for all the national teams and I think that is enormous considering the fact that several kit manufacturers turned us down after adidas decided not to renew its contract.

“There maybe no immediate cash reward from the contract but as our national teams would get to benefit once they qualify for major tournaments.”

The Super Eagles, according to the NFF, would earn as much as $500,000 should they qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
