At Thursday’s evening training that lasted almost three hours, the players were grilled on quick counter attack, fast breaks, robust defending and the need to avoid unnecessary infringements on the opponents.

Assistant Coach, Dan ‘the Bull’ Amokachi, was the one dishing out the instructions, with the assistance of Coach Hyandonou Valere and Ike Shorunmu.

The training which was held at the Practice Pitch of the International Stadium in Uyo, was to later throw up some of the stars that will be seen during today’s game.

Apart from established professionals like Chigozie Agbim, Azubuike Egwueke, Christian Osagunna Ighodalo and Gbolahan Salami, there was an excitement in the play of Enyimba of Aba midfielder, Kingsley Sokari and Nigeria league hot shot Mfom Udoh.

At the sessions and those before them, the duo simply stood out and baring last minutes juggling are expected to start the game or come into the match at some point. The coaching crew kept sealed lips about their starting list but acknowledged that some new discoveries have been made that will be catapulted even to the main team. “But I will have to discuss that with the Head Coach,” declared Amokachi on Thursday.

I’m ready to return as Eagles’ coach, says Keshi

Stephen Keshi has said he won’t mind returning as Nigeria’s coach, if he was asked to do so by the  President.

President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered Keshi be reinstated after he was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

When asked if he was aware of the presidential order yesterday in Abuja, Keshi told AfricanFootball.com: “Well I am just hearing from you.

“But if the President of my country asked me to return, who am I to refuse?”

‘Big Boss’ was at press time locked in a meeting with Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo.

Keshi had earlier refused to comment on speculations he was to return as the country’s coach just weeks after he was eased out with Nigeria in danger of missing out on next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Several top sources have confirmed that Jonathan has ordered Keshi be re-instated and given a contract.

This was after his meeting with NFF president Amaju Pinnick and Chris Giwa at the Aso Rock Villa Wednesday night.

“Keshi is back as Nigeria coach and he will be the one to lead the Super Eagles against Congo and South Africa next month,” one of the top sources informed AfricanFootball.com.

An official statement is being expected in this respect.

    Eagles may recall Haruna, Obasi

Manchester City starlet Kelechi Iheanacho, Obafemi Martins and Ikechukwu Uche have already been widely linked with a return to the Eagles after they were overlooked by former coach Stephen Keshi.
AfricanFootball.com has now gathered that Lukman Haruna of Dynamo Kiev and Schalke 04 forward Obasi have been added to the growing list of players who will be given another chance by the African champions.
“Amodu will keep the core of the squad Keshi has worked with recently, but at least five of those who have not been part of the set-up for some time now will be considered,” a top official informed AfricanFootball.com

Yusuf: Eagles job won’t affect El-Kanemi

New Super Eagles interim assistant coach, Salisu Yusuf has dismissed fears that his new assignment with the national team will adversely affect his duties at Glo Premier League side, El-Kanemi Warriors but has posited that it would mutually compliment his services to the national team and the club.

“Combining both jobs is not a big deal, because I have been working with the team for eleven months now and much synergy has been created. My being present or absent is of no great deal because I have already built a team that can do better even in my absence,” he told www.lmc-ng.org.

Salisu, who has previously worked as a Super Eagles’ assistant coach under Samson Siasia, also spoke about the struggles of his club, El-Kanemi Warriors. He has remained confident that they will beat the drop.

“I am not under any pressure to beat the drop and in view of our recent performances and results, El-Kanemi is sure to remain in the Premier League come next season,” he said.

Mfon Udoh’s lone goal in the 50th minute made all the difference for Enyimba’s title aspirations, as they beat the Warriors in Aba, and securing crucial three points for the Elephants that kept them on the heels of Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars.

The striker tapped in his 18th of the season from 10 yards after some neat work from Nzugbe Anaezemba following Kingsley Sokari’s flick.

Amodu set to give Mohamed, Yahaya Eagles chance

According to AfricanFootball.com, Flying Eagles skipper Musa Mohamed and Tottenham Hotspurs youngster Musa Yahaya are most likely to be considered for the new Super Eagles under caretaker coach Shuaibu Amodu.

Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup Kelechi Iheanacho has already been mentioned as one of those players to be named by the full international team after former coach Stephen Keshi said he was “too young” for his team.

The new national selectors are spreading their dragnet wide to ensure that the country’s best players feature for the Eagles.

Muhammed is on the books of Turkish club Besiktas and he is widely seen as a player who could finally solve the country’s problematic right back position which has for the past three years been manned by central defender Efe Ambrose.

He is likely to be included in the home-based Eagles’ training camp which opens in Uyo early next month.

Muhammed is energetic, good defensively and loves to join the attack.

Yahaya, on the other hand, has been training with the Tottenham Hotspur academy team for the past few months.

Left winger ‘Neymar’ also shone at last year’s triumphant U-17 World Cup in the UAE. He has vision and weighs in with his fair share of goals.

The U-23s will battle to qualify for the 2015 All-Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville in September, as well as the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.

  • Cooreman: I can coach Eagles

    Cooreman: I can coach Eagles

Maurice  Cooreman expects to apply for the vacant Nigeria coaching job by next week, SL10 exclusively gathered from the Belgium-born trainer.

The poor performance of the Super Eagles in the on-going 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers, following one win, two defeats and one draw wasn’t expected by even the neutrals.

The position was declared vacant following the axing of 2013 AFCON winning coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi on 15th October by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

Barely a week after even Keshi came to terms that he no longer has rights to pull the strings; Ruud Gullit, Henri Michel, Allain Giresse, Lothar Mathaus, Klaus Toppmoller and Roger Lamerre have all been linked with the most coveted coaching job in African Football.

Cooreman came to prominence when he led Ocean Boys of Bayelsa to the Nigerian league title in 2006.

Besides, he also won the Federation Cup with Kaduna United in 2010. The highly-rated gaffer, won the 2007 Premier League shield with Enyimba International and also piloted the team to a semi-final run in the 2008 CAF Champions League.

Cooreman, who has been involved in Nigerian football for more than 10 years, has also managed Nigerdock, NPA, Bendel Insurance, Lobi Stars and Gabros International, Warri Wolves and Gombe United.

“I have been coaching in Nigeria for so many years. The country is blessed with so many talented players, who have immense talents,” Cooreman explained to SL10.

“Nigeria need an experienced mind to manage a team of world class players, so I fit the bill as my records in the domestic league speaks volume.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to disclose candidates who have applied for the plum position.

Egwuekwe: Prayers can get Eagles AFCON ticket

    • Says Eagles’ players have resolved to win in Congo

Super Eagles’ defender Azubuike Egwuekwe has disclosed that the country’s national team players are aware of what is at stake and would ensure that they secure victory in the last two rounds of the 2015 African Cup of Nations  (AFCON) qualifiers against Congo and South Africa next month.

The Eagles, the defending champions of the AFCON by virtue of the feat recording last year in South Africa are in danger of missing out on the next edition.

They are third in the qualifiers with four points from four matches and must win their final two matches to stand a chance of defending the crown won at the expense of Burkina Faso in 2013.

Egwuekwe in a chat with SportingLife revealed that the recent plight of the Eagles in the qualifiers has always been on their mind  and they are resolved to get the maximum points in their last two qualifying matches to pick a ticket to AFCON.

The Warri Wolves’ captain opined that Nigerians should not fret as the Eagles players have talked to themselves to ensure that the nation is not deprived of the opportunity to watch their stars at the next AFCON,  hence the determination to approach their last two matches with all their might.

“We know what is at stake and we have promised not to disappoint Nigerians.

We  don’t need to be told to win. We know winning is a must. We are happy with our recent position on the AFCON qualifiers’ log and we have joined forces to ensure that we get the ticket.

“We know that we would be setting a bad record for ourselves if we do not qualify because Nigerians still remember vividly those that didn’t manage to take the Eagles to AFCON in the past. We don’t want to be associated with such record,” Egwuekwe said.

Eagles must score three goals against Congo and hope that the Red Devils do not get more than one, when they play them on November 14th in Brazzaville before another must win tie at Uyo on November 19th.

But Egwuekwe added that both matches are surmountable adding that what the Eagles need right now is  prayers and that the players would ensure that they complement the prayers with work on the pitch in both games.

  • Ighodaro happy to play for Rangers 24 hours after Eagles clash

Ighodaro happy to play for Rangers 24 hours after Eagles clash

Osaguona Ighodaro was a surprise inclusion in the Enugu Rangers squad that tackled Heartland in the Nigeria Professional Football League on Thursday afternoon, having represented the Super Eagles the day before.

The 24-year-old proved that his loyalty to the Flying Antelopes was unquestionable after stepping onto the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium pitch less than two hours after arriving Enugu from Abuja. And he repaid coach John Obuh’s faith in him by scoring in the 38th minute, as Rangers secured all three points in the Oriental Derby.

”I left Abuja at 12:45 pm with an Arik Air flight. I had to play for Enugu Rangers, we have to play together as a team, it was a derby game.

”Yes I was tired but as a player you know what you are after, and you have to keep pushing for it,” Osaguona Ighodaro told SL10.ng on Friday morning.

In the race for the top scorer award in Nigeria’s top division, the Enugu Rangers marksman is now two goals behind Enyimba’s  Mfon Udoh, after netting his 15th goal of the season against Heartland.

Osaguona has pointed out that he would have added to his 15-goal haul if he had not been away on international duty with the Super Eagles.

Revealed: How Eagles ganged up against Enyeama

A top Super Eagles player has dropped a bombshell after he revealed exclusively to AfricanFootball.com that the African champions are so divided that they play against each other right on the pitch.

This startling revelation may go some way in giving some credence to coach Stephen Keshi’s recent claim that there is a gang-up for him not to succeed.

The Europe-based player, who would not want his identity revealed, said the Eagles’ loss in Sudan was one such match where the Eagles played against themselves so as to “mess up” returning Vincent Enyeama, who some of them feel pushes his way around the team as the messiah.

“For the match in Sudan, there were some players who worked against the team so as to mess up Enyeama, who was not available for the qualifiers and who some of us felt was carrying on as if he were the Messiah of the team,” the player opened up to AfricanFootball.com.

“Some of these players will now be relieved that Keshi is no longer the coach because had he remained, they already knew they had played their last game for the country under him.

The Eagles star described Keshi as “a father figure” who was badly influenced by some of his assistants.

“Some of Keshi’s assistants were too open with their bias for certain players and this did not go down well with some other players,” the player said.

“This even gave some weight to allegations of bribery in the team and some officials trying to market their own players.”

The player refused to comment on growing allegations of huge cash changing hands for final squad places at the World Cup in Brazil.

“Please don’t go near there,” he simply asked.
