Iheanacho should be in Eagles team -Garba

Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba has said Manchester City starlet Kelechi Iheanacho ought to be given a chance to feature for the Super Eagles.

Iheanacho has shone for English Premier League champions Manchester City in pre-season, just months after he was voted the best player at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

“The Super Eagles can give Kelechi (Iheanacho) a chance,” Manu told AfricanFootball.com.

“He is a highly promising talent and Nigeria could really get a lot out of him even at this stage of his career.

“Personally, I believe he is more talented than most of the top stars at Manchester City, who are only more experienced than he is.”

Manu restated that above all Iheanacho is a top-class finisher around the box.

“I’m yet to see a player of his age who can score goals around the 18-yard box with such class and composure like he does,” he remarked.

“In training with the U17s, he often scores four, five goals. I’m therefore not surprised that more people are now talking about him.”

Iheanacho, who will only be 18 in October, impressed in training camp with the Nigeria ‘B’ team ahead of the 2014 CHAN in South Africa, but he would later opt out so as to pursue his dream to play for Manchester City.

Meanwhile, the support striker or attacking midfielder will not be available for Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, for a 2015 African Youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho on August 16 in Kaduna.

“City have plans for Kelechi and so he will not available for our match in Kaduna,” Flying Eagles handler Manu revealed.

    •Eagles star returns to form

Nigeria international midfielder Ogenyi Onazi is back to full fitness at his Italian club SS Lazio after the injury sustained in the round of 16 game between France and Nigeria. The French beat their Nigerian counterparts 2-0 in Brasilia.

Onazi suffered an ankle injury initially thought to be a broken leg though tests showed no fracture after a bad tackle by Blaise Matuidi during a second round game between Nigeria and France at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The 21-year-old has since returned to Italy where he has teamed up with Serie A club SS Lazio for pre- season. On Friday, he took to Twitter to discuss his current situation.

“God is really good; if you told me I’d be back to my best and to top fitness right now, I’d have laughed at you,” he tweeted via @OnaziOgenyi.

Onazi is famous for his fierce and powerful shots. He underlined his power with his feet when he broke the hand of his teammate, Michael Babatunde, during Nigeria’s World Cup game against Argentina. The midfielder jokingly stressed his return to fitness and pointed out that his shots were still as powerful as ever.

“My people for Naija, as I dey talk to una right now, I wan play one shot from Rome to meet una for Lagos. Who go pick the ball?” he queried in Pidgin English.

Onazi, who made 29 league appearances for Lazio last season, has been capped 21 times by Nigeria.

  • I’m ready for Eagles -Dike

    I’m ready for Eagles -Dike

Nigeria international Bright Dike has said he is ready to return to the pitch after a long-term Achilles tendon injury.

Dike tore his Achilles tendon back in February and has been out of commission the entire 2014 season.

“Whenever the coach is ready for me,” Dike said, when asked how long he had before returning to the pitch.

“Right now, honestly, I feel good to go so whenever they give me the go-ahead, I’m ready.”

On his return to full fitness and training, Dike said: “It feels great. I’ve been waiting so long.

“I was so anxious to get back on the pitch. It feels like Christmas for me.”

The Nigeria international said he was most grateful to the Toronto FC staff in his comeback.

“Unfortunately, I’ve been through it before,” Dike said, when asked about his injury troubles in the past.

“That just makes me know exactly what I have to do beforehand. This time, I’m going to be that much more mobile coming back. The staff has been really great in pushing me to get back, in fitness, mobility and strength.”

He said he is looking forward to playing alongside some of his side’s new players for the first time.

“You get so excited to play with quality players,” Dike said. “I’m itching to get back on the field and play up top with [Jermain] Defoe. Any time you play with good guys like that, it’s very exciting.”

  • 2015 Africa Cup of Nations: NO COACH FOR EAGLES

2015 Africa Cup of Nations: NO COACH FOR EAGLES

    • Keshi’s negotiations may continue till September – NFF
    • May opts for plan B; Amodu, Chukwu, others mentioned

The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) has admitted that contract negotiations with Stephen Keshi may drag on till September, when the Super Eagles begin their qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

SL10 had earlier reported that contract negotiations with the ‘Big Boss’, as Keshi is called and the NFF may linger, given the list of demands that Keshi has, if he’s to continue as coach of the Africa champions. Sl10 also reported that the NFF may be having alternate plans – which includes but not restricted to Keshi taking temporary charge of the Eagles for their first qualifier against the Bees of Rwanda on September 5, if contract talks are not settled before then.

And now, an executive member of the NFF, ‘Deji Tinubu has admitted that talks between them and Keshi could stretch into when the qualifiers will begin.

“It’s possible that our discussions with Keshi could stretch into when we play our first qualifier, but we have made plans for such eventuality,” he told Hot FM.

“We have a plan B, if negotiations with Keshi are not completed before the qualifiers. There is a plan in place to take care of that, and if it does happen that we didn’t conclude negotiations with him, then we’ll put the other plan in motion,” he said.

Tinubu also confirmed that they have sent a draft of the new contract terms to Keshi, who’s presently in the USA, for consideration and to either send a counter-draft or agreement but posited that they expect a counter-draft with Keshi’s own demands.

“We received a letter of acceptance from him on Monday, after we sent him a letter of intent last week. So now we have sent him a draft of the contract terms from our view, and we expect him to send either a counter-draft or an agreement notice.

“But the truth is, at this stage of negotiations, we are expecting a counter-draft as he’s expected to give us his terms before we finally come to an agreement,” he said.

Part of Keshi’s demands, it is believed, is a 100% increment on his N5million monthly salary which should see him earn N10million monthly. Also for one of his trusted comrades, Sylvanus Okpala to be returned as one of his assistants, and the salary of Valere Houandonou to be paid for by the NFF. The ‘Big Boss’ had been paying the Togolese out of his own pocket.

Keshi is also expected to demand for a free hand to lead the Super Eagles, without the ‘interference’ of the technical committee and also for travel tickets to and from for when he’s on leave or holiday to see his family in the USA.

But reports has it that the NFF are willing to agree to those terms, bar the salary increment. The NFF are understood to be offering an increment of N2million, which means Keshi should earn N7million and not the N10million he’s expected to ask for.

  • Backlash for Eagles: (My World Cup diary, 15)

Backlash for Eagles: (My World Cup diary, 15)

The reality has dawned on our big boys (Super Eagles) in Europe. They are languishing in their old clubs. John Mikel Obi and Victor Moses are not good enough to be part of Chelsea’s pre-season tour. They will keep the home front warm while others perfect their acts ahead of the new European season. That is the price players who lost focus during the World Cup face after the Mundial. Only a miracle will earn them a shirt at the start of the season.

Mikel has been linked with several clubs, especially in Italy. His transfer news is everywhere the international media, yet nothing has happened in terms of securing a new club, leaving pundits to ask what has happened to his game. Chelsea’s manager Jose Mourinho has recruited good holding midfielders who will keep the Nigerian at the stands, not on the bench this new session. Had the Eagles done well in Brazil, Mikel and Moses would have called Mourinho’s bluff and head for at least Queens Park Rangers (QPR), the newly promoted Barclays English Premier League side.

Will Mikel return to the Globacom Premier League competition this season? Shocked? Do not be. It could happen with the way things are. Or he could swallow his pride and head for the lower rung, like Kenneth Omeruo, who is on a one year loan to Middleborough. Is this how Mikel’s career will end? I don’t think so. He must lift his game. He must show that he can dribble, pass the ball very well and score goals. Passing backwards or shielding the ball from markers cannot help his game.

Not a few criticised Mikel’s choice as the Budweiser Man-of-the-match against Iran. They opted for Osaze Odemwingie. But the statistics on the technical board as the Iranian game progressed showed that Mikel was indeed the engine-room of the Eagles in that tie. Mikel has vowed to remain at Chelsea to fight for a shirt. No one doubts his talent. His problem is his style. He needs to be more adventurous, if he hopes to use Chelsea’s games to convince willing European teams to seek for his services. This seems far-fetched for now, given Mikel’s body language. It could mean that his fight for shirt at Chelsea is hinged on the fact that a move out of Stamford Bridge could force the Nigerian to take a pay-cut. Pay cut for Mikel? Read my lip.

Moses’ case is slightly different. He learnt the game in England, playing with English kids. His peers are all over; so are some of his former coaches and trainers, who taught him the basics of the game. Moses seems too lazy. He was loaned out to Liverpool. He couldn’t lift his game, with England international whiz-kid Raheem Sterling keeping the Nigerian on the bench for most of last season. However, Moses could get succour from his former manager at Wigan, Roberto Martinez, who coaches Everton.

Martinez wanted Moses at Everton last season. He could return for the Nigerian. But this depends on how much Chelsea would accept as his transfer fees. Otherwise, Mosescould be loaned out to smaller teams this season.

Efe Ambrose earned his stripe playing for Nigeria at the Brazil 2014 World Cup. He wasn’t quite outstanding in Eagles’ four matches. Efe returned to his Scottish club Celtic FC of Glasgow, and did well in the team’s UEFA Champions League game. He is a sure bet for the Eagles, except that he plays at the centre-back for Celtic.

The good news, however, is that Elderson Echiejile is fit again to play for his French side. He couldn’t tie down a regular shirt last season. Many hope that Echiejile returns to the first 11, having missed out of Nigeria’s Brazil 2014 World Cup matches due to a freak injury during one of Eagles’ warm-up matches. Our players need to play regularly, if we hope to excel at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

For Godfrey Oboabona, Brazil 2014 World Cup is a nightmare. He nursed hope that he would hit the big stage with a meteoric outing for the Eagles. He limped out against Iran and never returned to the game till Nigeria was eliminated. Easily one of Nigeria’s best central defenders, Oboabona’s injury worries has made his club career in Turkey an uneventful one. Perhaps, this injury is what Oboabona needs to see the doctors, ahead of the 2014/2015 soccer season.

Juwon Oshianiwa shocked everyone with his determination at the world Cup. Not a skilful player, yet he fought for the ball and gave his opponents difficult times, every time they took him on to try to dislodge the Eagles’ defence.

Nigeria’s best player at the World Cup in Brazil is Oguenyi Onazi. He did the dirty jobs in the midfield. He covered up Mikel’s weaknesses even though the Chelsea star got the accolades culminating in Mikel being adjudged the man-of-the-match in Nigeria’s first game against Iran. Onazi was brutalised by the French, reminiscent of what the Italians did to Daniel Amokachi and Emmanuel Amuneke during the USA’94 World Cup. Onazi held the Eagles’ midfield firmly. But he bowed to the rough tactics of the French with the referee from USA looking the other way. Onazi’s exit spelt doom for Nigeria as we crashed out of the competition, losing a game we had firmly in our hands.

When Michael Babatunde was listed in Nigeria’s 23-man list, this writer was shocked. He had shown glimpses of his talent. But for the big stage, one had doubts. But Babatunde proved everyone wrong with his sterling performance until he was substituted due to a broken hand in the better-to-be-forgotten game against France. I look forward to watching a midfield featuring Babatunde, Onazi, Bright Dike and Mikel, only if Eagles’ coaches learn how to parade four midfielders, not the archaic two-man midfield formation where Mikel tires out quickly.

If a seer had predicted that Emmanuel Emenike won’t score a goal at the World Cup in Brazil, bookmakers would have placed several bets on such odds. Emenike was the hottest striker in Africa before the Mundial. It was the reason why the Iranians, Bosnians, Argentines and the French close-marked him. He wasn’t given any breathing space as he could be deadly when faced with any goalkeeper. In fact, the Bosnians are still ruing how Emenike shoved off their captain before laying the killer pass which Osaze Odemwingie converted for the only goal of the game between Bosnia and Nigeria. Emenike did score a disallowed goal, yet he did his best at the Mundial. He remains with his club and we expect that he has learnt a few lessons on how to evade his markers. It could also include getting to know how to dribble them beyond his present physical approach to the game.

Odemwingie justified the clamour for his return. He accepted that his behaviour was untoward. The World Cup is over and not one negative word from the “king of the twitter” which means old things have passed away. Odemwingie and Ahmed Musa propelled the Eagles’ attack against Argentina and France. Odemwingie and Musa scored Nigeria’s three World Cup goals. Poor records for the defending African champions, but a deserving lesson for the Eagles’ coaches on how to field only the best, irrespective of their idiosyncrasies

Sadly, one of those dropped by our coaches, Brown Ideye, has joined Barclays English Premier League side Westbromwich Albion for a club record fee of 10 million pounds. He joins the league of Nigerians who have played for the Baggies. Ideye would strive to combine effectively with another Nigerian, Victor Anichebe in the attack. One hopes that Eagles’ coaches can look in their direction when picking the squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ikechukwu Uche is back at Villareal in Spain. He is fit. It was said that he had reconciled with Eagles coaches. They know better, having taken stock of what happened in Brazil with the strikers they took there. Uche’s return to the Eagles is imminent. One only wished the coaches had swallowed their pride for the sake of Nigerians. Nigeria would have beaten France and hit the quarterfinals. Maybe, we could have topped the group by beating Iran and drawing Argentina – only if they took Ike Uche, Victor Anichebe, Sone Aluko et al to Brazil. Not one to sulk over spilt milk, Uche offers the coaches their best chance to redeem whatever coaching reputation that they have. Will they take the chance? Oba khato Okpere, Ise!

    • Technical body given one-week ultimatum
    • African opponents preferred

The executive committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) rose from an emergency meeting in Abuja on Thursday, urging its technical body to immediately open discussion with agents for an international friendly scheduled for August 13.

The NFF body challenged the technical committee to ensure that an inetrnational friendly is played by Nigeria, on August 13 2014, a day set aside by the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) for its 209 affiliate federations to be involved in matches without hinderance from the clubs where their players ply their trade.

According to the communique, “The committee mandated the NFF Management to proceed with discussions with a number of African countries with a view to the Super Eagles playing a friendly match on the FIFA window of Wednesday, 13th August, 2014, as part of preparations for 2015.

Awoniyi inspires Flying Eagles to 5-0 win

Nigeria’s Under 20 team, the Flying Eagles, on Thursday stepped up their build-up for next month’s final Africa Youth Championship (AFCON) qualifier against Lesotho when they trounced Nigeria National League (NNL) side Prisons FC of Abuja 5-0.

The Flying Eagles will host Lesotho on August 16 with the return leg a fortnight later in Maseru and the overall winners will advance to the 2015 AYC to be staged by Senegal in March.

Taiwo Awoniyi, fresh from a training stint in Sweden,  opened scoring with Ifeanyi Matthew, Sulaiman Abdullahi, Chisom Eze and Segun Alebiosu also getting on the scoreboard.

The Nigeria U-20s opened scoring after 12 minutes from the penalty spot when Awoniyi was fouled inside the box and Ifeanyi Matthew sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Awoniyi then fired the first goal on 26 minutes, when he crashed his effort from inside the box into the roof of the net.

The languid striker would have scored again in first half stoppage time, but he missed an easy chance.

Prisons’ best chance came in the 53rd minute, when Flying Eagles goalie Joshua Enaholo parried a goal-bound effort for a corner kick.

In the 69th minute, substitute Sulaiman Abdullahi scored the Flying Eagles’ third goal when he lobbed over the Prisons goalie before he coolly finished off. Prisons midfielder Ochule Paul was sent off in the 71st minute for dissent.

Substitutes Chisom Eze and Alebiosu crowned the victory with well-taken goals in the 73rd and 89th minutes respectively.

  • Eagles are jinxed , says Danagogo

The Minister of Sports and Chairman of National Sports Commission(NSC), Tammy Danagogo is still sulking over the inability of the Super Eagles to go beyond the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup lamenting that the situation is a jinx.

The minister declared this when he played host to members of the Club Owners Association in his office at the National stadium, Abuja.

He said the solution to breaking the jinx lies in the hands of the club owners whom he said have the potentials of harvesting players who will match with their counterparts in the developed nations.

Danagogo encouraged the club owners to work  together and overcome disputes among them. He charged them to learn to handle their problems privately rather than using the media to pass on their messages.

He applauded the club owners stressing that the association is recognised by FIFA as the bedrock of any football in any country.

Meanwhile, the association praised the Federal Government for the leadership role, intervention as well as contributions towards ensuring that the FIFA suspension was lifted.  They called on the Minister to help in urging all stakeholders to abide by the provisions of the statutes of football as sanctioned by FIFA.

SUPER EAGLES JOB: Keshi still in limbo

    • Ready to serve Nigeria
    • Mum on Bafana, Bafana post

Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi, has told supersport.com that he has not been contacted by the country’s football federation, the NFF, on staying in his role. Keshi stated that he had never shut down on remaining the Nigeria head coach job.

“No one has spoken to me about any contract or invited me to discussion. I am always ready to serve my country to the best of my ability. But we must do things properly,” Keshi responded to supersport.com when asked if he is in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to remain as Super Eagles head coach.

The 52-year-old Nigerian coach, however, played down reports of him being in the frame to take charge of South Africa’s Bafana Bafana. He also expressed excitement at being linked to the role of the South Africa head coach.

“They [the South Africa Football Association] have not named their coach. Or have they? I’m happy I’m being considered worthy to handle the team of such a big country but they’ve not named me or any other person as their coach, so I can’t start talking in that capacity,” said Keshi.

The future of Keshi as Nigeria’s head coach was expected to be among the discussion between the country’s sports Minister, Dr Tammy Danagogo and the NFF on Tuesday in Abuja but the meeting did not hold.

Under Keshi as head coach, Nigeria won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and also reached the second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years.
