CHAN Eagles promised $100,000 to beat Morocco

Nigeria will be $100,000 richer if they beat Morocco today to qualify for the semi-final of CHAN, officials have disclosed.

In an official statement from the National Sports Commission (NSC), sports minister Bolaji Abdullahi said he hopes this cash boost will propel the team past Morocco in Cape Town this afternoon.

“This is a special fund meant to encourage the players to give their all. It is besides their normal allowance and bonus,” the sports minister said.

“I am very impressed with their performance so far. As we all can see, the team has been improving with each match, and it is our desire that they continue to do very well and reach the final. This incentive will hopefully further boost the morale of both the players and coaches and help the team to triumph over Morocco.”

Nigeria are making only their debut at this tournament. They qualified for the last eight after they beat hosts South Africa 3-1 and Mozambique 4-2 to finish second in Group A.

Morocco, who are also making their CHAN debut, topped Group B ahead of Zimbabwe.

Morocco cannot stop Eagles, says Bewarang

The National President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association (NFCA), Bitrus Bewarang has boasted that the Atlas Lions of Morocco do not have the ability to stop the Super Eagles in the quarter-final match of the on-going African Nations Championship (CHAN) holding in South Africa.

According to the former Super Eagles coach, the home-based Super Eagles are composed of players that are determined to make names for themselves; and no team can stop them for now. “The boys are very determined, and will continue to improve as every game progresses. So, it would be difficult for the Moroccans to stand in their way to winning the trophy.”

Continuing, Coach Bewarang, who is the General Manager of Plateau United FC of Jos, said: “We must all commend the team for their performance so far, and urge them not to rest on their oars until they win the trophy for the first time for the country.

“I will specifically commend the Head Coach of the team Stephen Keshi for his efforts in turning the team round within the shortest possible time. We are very proud of him, as he has restored the hopes of indigenous coaches in the country. We are confident that he has the capability to win the trophy for the country.”

He however cautioned the team to approach the match against the Moroccans with all seriousness, and ensure that they do not fall for the antics of the North Africans at this stage of the championship.

Eagles’ performance credit to Glo league

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Vice President Mike Umeh says the Super Eagles’ performance at the African Nations Cup is a credit to the Globacom Premier League.

The domestic competition has suffered from bad press in recent years, but is gradually being turned around by the League Management Company.

Umeh says the players have proved that despite all the troubles, the league can compete favourably with the rest of the continent

“These boys have been very good ambassadors of the league. What they have shown is that our league has not fallen below expectations, otherwise we won’t be able to get these players,” Umeh told KickOffNigeria.com.

“Most of the boys you see here today are not the same who started the qualification series. More than half of the team have left and these are new boys who have been drafted in to replace them, but look at what the boys are doing now against other teams who have been together for much longer.”

Speaking at their training session later on Wednesday, Umeh admonished the players not to take their feet off the pedal but to keep their eyes firmly fixed on the prize

“The President asked me to tell you that you have done well so far but there is more work to be done and that is why we are here to remind you to listen to your coaches and deliver the goods against Morocco,” he said on behalf of NFF President Aminu Maigari.

“Indeed you have shown the world that there is no Super Eagles team A or B any more because of your performance here and we are sure that at the end of the day we will carry the day by taking the trophy home.

“Let me assure you that apart from President Maiagari and our father President Goodluck Jonathan, all other political parties in Nigeria are rooting for you to win without bias and you must prove them right by winning the trophy.”

    • To play winners of Group B Saturday
    • Agbim puts up sterling display

Christantus Ejike Uzoenyi scored two goals as Nigeria smashed South Africa’s dreams of progressing beyond the group stages of the African Nations Championship on Sunday, beating the hosts 3-1 and ensuring Nigeria joined Group A winners Mali in the quarter finals.

Uzoenyi opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, before Ifeanyi Ede scored the second — from the penalty spot — eight minutes later, sending the visitors into the half-time break with a comfortable lead.

Ejike put the result beyond doubt on 64 minutes to complete his brace and sent the host nation crashing out of the tournament at the first hurdle, despite Bernard Parker pulling one back in the 80th from a penalty.

Nigeria will face the group B winners in the quarter-finals and will wait until this evening matches before they can know their next opponent.

Bafana coach Gordon Igesund made four changes from his team that drew 1-1 with Mali earlier in the week, most notably, Itumeleng Khune, who was ruled out due to injury and was replaced in goal by Moeneeb Josephs.

The hosts got off to a flying start and soon sent Parker through on goal, following a quick burst from Mbatha, who had the better of his man and sailed past the defence.

Parker cut back and hit his left-footed curled effort on target, but straight at goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim, who made a straightforward stop to deny Parker the opener, just five minutes into the group decider

Tshabalala was next to test Agbim minutes later, but the Kaizer Chiefs midfielder could not beat the shot-stopper, who made a second solid save, parrying away Tshabalala’s well-hit effort from the set-piece.

South Africa looked lively in the middle of the field and chances opened up for Matthew Pattison and Thabo Nthethe, who rose above the Nigerian defence on 20 minutes and headed a powerful attempt at goal, but was thwarted by Agbim, who made another simple stop.

Against the run of play, however, Nigeria broke the deadlock through Ejike, who powered home a cross from Ifeanyi Ede, handing the Nigerians the vital lead midway through the opening half.

Things went from bad to worse for the home side on the half-hour mark, when Josephs’ handling error led to him bringing down Ejike in the area, leaving referee Mohamed Benouza no choice but to award a penalty.

Ede stepped up confidently and belted the penalty into the bottom right of goal, with Josephs getting a hand onto it, but failing to keep the shot out, as the Super Eagles extended their advantage in front of a stunned home crowd.

After the interval, Bafana looked to make a bright start, but soon Ede forced Josephs into a superb save after being left as the last man.

South Africa replied with a chance for Parker after an hour, but the striker’s athletic attempt did little to trouble Agbim, after Parker had been put through on goal and should have passed across the face of goal for Bafana’s oncoming numbers.

Mashego came agonisingly close a minute later with a snapshot from the edge of the area, but Agbim’s fingertip save did enough to keep out the danger.

But like before, Nigeria soaked up the pressure and hit Bafana on the break, as Ejike emphatically netted his second of the night, leaving a dejected home side condemned to the worst.

With little to smile about for the home crowd, Solomon Kwambe’s dismissal for a second yellow card gave Bafana a glimmer of hope 15 minutes from the end.

  • Eagles’ code of conduct not a draconian law — NFF

Eagles’ code of conduct not a draconian law — NFF

    • Says it will galvanise team

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said the Code of Conduct for the national teams including the Super Eagles has come to stay.

The football house also stated that the code of conduct is not a draconian law as people have interpreted it to be but a handbook of dos and don’ts that always exist in an organised setting.

The Chairman of Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Christopher Green said it would fire up the Super Eagles to success in the 2014 World Cup because everybody will behave accordingly as we all know that rules and regulations always guide people to success in their endeavours.

“The Code of Conduct is a necessary hand book not for the Super Eagles alone but for all the national teams. Even in their various clubs they have it. There is nothing new about it. There is nothing sinister about it and there is nothing draconic about it as how people have painted it to be, no, not at all.

“The NFF officials have obligations there; they have their responsibilities and very good intentions about this. Here the image of the country is paramount. Secondly, we need to prepare our team in such a way that we would not have distractions. Players should know what he has to do when in camp and outside camp too.

“If you are playing for the country the image of the country is on you in respect of how you conduct yourself on and off the field of play. Also you don’t expect a player to be unruly to his coach and also you don’t expect the coach to condone such things. You don’t also expect the NFF not to perform its duty as regards logistics, preparing the team in a conducive atmosphere as well as providing all the needs for a successful participation in a tournament or pre-tournament. So the Code of Conduct or Hand-book is for the success of our national teams not targeted at an individual”, Green clarified.

Bernard Parker scored South Africa’s consolation goal from the penalty spot in the 81st minutes after Ugonna Uzochukwu was adjudged to have brought down Matshego inside the 18-yard box.
Solomon Kwambe was red carded in the 74th for a second bookable offence, two minutes later South African’s Vuyo Mere was sent off as well for a foul on Gbolahan Salami.
South Africa started the game like house on fire getting the first shot at goal on target in the 5th minute, but Chigozie Agbim was on hand to make a save.
Agbim was on hand to make another save in the 9th minute. Enyimba striker Ifeanyi Ede failed to connect Azubuike Egwekwe’s cross in the 11th minute, his header in the 19th minute was well saved by South Africa keeper.
A minute later, Agbim make another save in the 20th minute to deny the Bafana Bafana.
Uzoenyi was denied a hat-trick when he hit the woodwork with a well taken half volley in the 70th minute.
Agbim was on hand again to stop Mashengo from a point black shot in the 88th minute.
In the 89th minute, Rabiu Ali came into rescue to clear ball from danger zone after Agbim completely missed the ball.

  • Eagles worry Bafana fans

    Eagles worry Bafana fans

FANS of South Africa’s Bafana Bafana have been weighing their team’s chances with some saying it was unfortunate that they did not win against Mali, as the Super Eagles may again ruin their chances of going further in the tournament.

Mahlatse Mphalele, writing for the New Age Newspapers, said: “The last thing Bafana Bafana needed was an unwanted situation of facing hoodoo opponents Nigeria in the last match of Group A on Sunday, faced with having to win at all costs.”

He added that Nigeria may spoil the chances of Bafana in the game and again qualify at the expense of the hosts.

No Nigerian senior team has ever lost to South Africa in an official game.

    • Says Bafana over rated

Mozambican striker, Manuel José Luís Bucuane, believes South Africa’s Bafana Bafana are overrated and has predicted a win for Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Sunday’s decisive 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) game in Cape Town.

Bucuane, popularly known as ‘Tico Tico’ scored 27 times in 83 appearances for Mozambique between 1995 and 2010.

The Mozambican legend believes “struggling” Bafana Bafana will not find things straightforward when they come up against the Super Eagles in their third and final preliminary game against the West African giants.

“South African is not doing so well at the CHAN and are struggling as well. Yes, they beat Mozambique 3-1 but we still don’t know how they managed to achieve that against us,” he told reporters in Cape Town.

The 40-year-old added that the South Africans were extremely lucky to escape defeat against Mali in their second group game on Wednesday and added that things may get sticky for Gordon Igesund’s men against the Super Eagles.

“South Africa couldn’t cope with Mali (the game ended 1-1) and against Nigeria it’s going to be a really difficult game for them.

“They are under pressure. They are playing at home and everybody expects them to qualify (for the quarter finals).

“They didn’t want to go into a third game without having sealed their place in the next round yet, so the game against Nigeria is a decisive match,” he said.

A draw on Sunday will be enough for South Africa to seal their place in the last eight but the Super Eagles will be looking for an outright win to advance to the knockout rounds.

    Keshi rings changes for Mozambique

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, is set to make several changes to his starting team against Mozambique in the CHAN on Wednesday.

Both Nigeria and Mozambique are going for broke at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday after they lost their opening Group A matches.

Keshi will replace Sunshine Stars midfielder Ikenna Paul and Benjamin Francis of Heartland, who are both ruled out of the match.

Francis failed to recover in time from the knock he suffered in the game against Mali, while the muscle strain suffered by Paul in the Eagles training on Monday knocked him out of the game against Mozambique.

“Ikenna Paul and Benjamin Francis are ruled out of the game. We would have to rely on other players to do the job,” confirmed Keshi.

“I just want to take one game at a time. We have seen in the past that teams lose their first game and still go ahead and win the tournament.

“In 2010 here Spain lost to Switzerland in the first game and still went ahead to win, so anything can still happen,” MTNFootball.com quoted Keshi as saying ahead of the match.

3SC striker Gbolahan Salami is expected to lead the Eagles attack with support from Ejike Uzoenyi and Ifeanyi Ede.

Enyimba’s Bright Esieme will be in line to make his debut for the Super Eagles following the injury to Benjamin Francis, while Kano Pillars Shehu Abdullahi comes in for Paul in midfield. Another player who could start will be Joshua Obaje.

The players on Tuesday practiced shooting from range and attacking moves to sharpen their finishing in front of goal.

Meanwhile, coach of Mozambique team to CHAN, Joao Chissano, has declared that his team will shock Nigeria.

Chissano told MTNFootball.com:”The Nigeria team is not a strong side. We are both under pressure, but I have told my boys to just enjoy themselves because they are playing against a big side and when they play freely, it is possible to beat Nigeria.”

    Maigari, Envoy Tell Eagles

Before, and even after the Super Eagles stepped out for their first game at the ongoing Championship of African Nations (CHAN) 2013, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and indeed the government believes the team has the potential of lifting the championship trophy.

NFF President, Aminu Maigari and Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa, Sunday. S Yusuf stated their positions while addressing the players at their Garden Court De Waal hotel, which also houses the Mambas of Mozambique, the next opponents of the Nigerian side.

Maigari, who has been variously praised as the best football manager ever in Nigeria, said he was certain that with the calibre of players and officials in the Super Eagles, the team will make Nigerians proud by winning the trophy on February 1, when the final is played. “We are a winning nation and the Eagles are a winning brand, come February 1, I will be here along with your coach Stephen Keshi to lift this trophy for Nigerians,”he said. He praised the commitment of the players and officials and asked them not to waver in the pursuit of the national cause.

Ambassador Yusuf, in his remarks said the Eagles are bigger ambassadors than those who are officially posted by the government, as they bring joy to every home in Nigeria through their heroics. He assured that the embassy will do everything possible to make the Eagles’ stay in South Africa pleasant but enjoined the team to forget the past and concentrate on winning the trophy. “This is a fertile ground for us to win trophies and the ball is in your court to go and once again make Nigerians happy,” he said.
