    Artificial turf awaits Eagles

Nigeria’s home-based Eagles who will return to camp on Sunday, July 14, for the return leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Cote d’Ívoire billed for Abidjan, are expected to play on an artificial turf. The match has been fixed for July 27.

Going by this development, the players who will be camped at the Bolton White Apartment in Abuja, will train on the artificial pitch of the FIFA Goal Project Centre.

“Also, our timing for training will change to enable the boys adjust to the synthetic pitch in Abidjan, which we understand is locally made and generates heat,” said the source.

SportingLife understands that the recent information was only communicated to members of the technical crew yesterday with Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi, yet to be fully briefed.

“The coach is in Benin on a short visit and we have not been able to reach him, perhaps it is poor network. But hopefully, we should get him before the day ends.

“We need to find out from him, what the training will look like,” said the source. Although Keshi has repeatedly commended his players for the 4-1 scoreline recorded in the first leg, he still expects a tough match from their opponents. The Ivorians have always qualified for previous editions of the competition.

In Nigeria’s case, it failed to qualify for the last two tournaments, but is looking forward to being in South Africa next year for the third edition.

Beating Eagles is mission possible – Saintfiet

Tom Saintfiet has assured Malawians that its mission possible for Flames to up-set star studded Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the last World Cup qualifying game of Group F in Calabar.

SportingLife gathered from the Belgian ,while speaking to the local press after he was unvieled by his new employers on Tuesday at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, the Malawai capital informed he had come to Malawi with an agenda of making history in ensuring that Flames qualify for Barzil 2014 World Cup final for the first time by beating Nigeria away, which he described as ”mission possible”.

“We’ll go to Nigeria to surprise them, surprise Africa and the whole World. They (Nigeria) are good but not unbeatable. Kenya almost beat them,” said Saintfeit.

Saintfeit who watched Malawi’s lone goal loss in an international friendly match against Mozambique, which was part of the country’s 49th Independence Anniversary celebrations, hinted that: “Flames played well and Malawi can beat Nigeria. I have watched few games and I have noticed some quality.”

Speaking further, the 40-year-old Belgian said: “I have been generally successful with the teams I have coached. But reasons beyond football and my control have frustrated my work In Africa, ” he said.

On March 28 2012, Saintfiet was named Nigeria’s football technical director, but three months later the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi cancelled his appointment because they didn’t want a foreigner for the job.

The Belgian said, the termination of his contract by Nigeria is an extra motivation for him to see Flames boot Super Eagles out of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

“Of course, I am still hurt, but I am professional. I don’t let emotions guide me, but surely I am more motivated. I believe Malawi has capacity to beat Nigeria. We just need a proper strategy,” said Saintfiet.

CHAN 2014: Glo hails home Eagles emphatic victory

MAJOR SPONSOR of the Nigerian national football teams, Globacom, has commended the performance of the home-based Super Eagles who defeated their Ivorian counterparts 4-1 in the CHAN 2014 first leg final round qualifier on Saturday in Kaduna.

Nigeria edged closer to the CHAN finals slated for South Africa next January after humbling the fellow West Africans, Cote d’Ivoire . However, it will not be over until the second leg is played in Abidjan on July 20th.

“We are impressed that the players plying their trade in the domestic league were able to demonstrate their superiority over the Ivorians which further confirmed that our strong commitment to the development of the Glo professional league is a step in the right direction,” Globacom said in a statement in Lagos yesterday.

“The fact that the home-based Eagles also showed their proficiency in goal scoring to satisfy the yearnings of Nigerian football fans means a credible new beginning for football in the country at the highest level,” the statement added.

Globacom stated that the players have shown with the convincing win over Cote d’Ivoire that they could achieve success, no matter the challenges, if they get the right motivation.

The company also commended Nigerian fans that trooped out in large number to the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna to cheer the Eagles to victory.

    Eagles regroup July 15

The Super Eagles will regroup July 15 in Abuja, the Federal Capital for the return leg of the African Nations Championship qualifier (CHAN), against the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in Abidjan schedule for July 27.

Head Coach Stephen Keshi told the players after the 4-1 mauling of the Ivorians in the final leg qualifier that the players must return to their clubsides and ensure that they make valuable contributions to their teams while awaiting the list of those who will make it to Abidjan.

He warned that any invited player who fails to make it to Abuja on the said date should forget about the return leg game as there is plenty of work to be done despite the wide margin first leg victory over the Elephants.

“We cannot afford to take our feet off the pedal because we have won here, the Ivorians are a very good side and we must be very ready for the return leg so that we don’t get shocked”, Keshi enthused.

Technical Committee Chairman of the NFF, Barrister Christopher Green, had a similar position on the opposition, noting that once again the Eagles were wasteful in front of goal and must gird their loins properly for the return leg to avoid a shocker.

“We won well but we could have done better. How can we explain a team that was two men down still threatening us and even being picked for off sides? It means we have a lot of work to do and I trust the technical crew will handle the situation.”

Keshi has already said he hopes to invite at least three new players to fortify the squad for the return leg while those players who did not measure up to standard in the first leg in Kaduna will be dropped.

    •Mba bags brace, Gambo shines

SUNDAY MBA inspired Nigeria to a comprehensive 4-1 win over Ivory Coast in the first-leg of the African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier played in Kaduna on Saturday evening.

Wearing black armbands in honour the late Thompson Oliha, the home-based Super Eagles started the game with some neat exchanges of passes, with Gomo Onduku and Ezekiel Mba inspiring Nigeria’s early incursions against a tough Ivorian team led by Roger Assale and Coulibaly.

Mohammad Gambo redeemed his image with a well taken goal to give Nigeria a deserved lead in the 12th minute. The Kano Pillars striker received a pass from Sunday Mba before turning his marker to drive home a left footed shot.

Both sides continued to create chances but it was Nigeria that would score again to double their advantage through Sunday Mba in the 28th minute after a long ball from Oboabona was met by Ezekiel Mba who whipped in a cross for Sunday Mba to blast home from outside the box.

Gambo headed home a cross from Kwambe in the 36th minute but the goal was disallowed. But inspite of pressure from Nigeria, the Ivorian’s remained resilient and were duly rewarded when Assale and Coulibaly combined well for the latter to score and pull a goal back for the Elephants going into the break.

Upon resumption of the second half, Enyimba’s Ifeanyi Edeh came on for Gomo Onduku.

The Ivorian’s suffered a depletion when the referee sent off Baresi for a hard tackle on Sunday Mba. Their plight was worsened when a penalty was awarded against them when a Ivorian player handled the ball off a corner kick taken by Kwambe in the 48th minute, leading to a protest from the Ivorian’s which culminated in Roger Assale being sent off for a verbal assault on the referee.

Sunday Mba scored with the penalty kick and Nigeria continued to dominate with the likes of Oboabona, and substitute Emeka Eze missing near chances.

Nigeria eventually sealed the win when Mba put Ifeanyi Edeh through to score the fourth goal in the 80th minute.

  • Well done gallant Eagles

    Well done gallant Eagles

If  there was any doubt that football is fast taking over from religion as the new opium of the masses, the just ended Confederation Cup in Brazil should dispel such. It was as if glorious World Cup football tournament was here again but with fewer countries participating. Just eight countries, the best from each continent; call it mini world cup if you would but it was only a dress rehearsal for the main show coming up also in Brazil next year. The world has just reveled in a fiesta of enthralling football nonetheless.

On display was the best of Europe as represented by Spain and Italy, the best of the Americas with Uruguay and Brazil, the best of Asia, Japan; the best of North America, Mexico; Tahiti stood in for the Oceania while Nigeria, the African champion hoisted the continent’s flag. It was boon for lovers of the round leather game with Tahiti seeming to provide the comic relief having been suffused with goals – garnering 24 in only three matches. But the tiny island country of 178,000 people was too happy to be at the world stage under global klieg lights for the first time to give a damn. The team made up of physical education teachers and artisans was obviously having a good time, hearty and happy even as it amassed baskets full of goals. Such was the spectacle that when they got the goal against the Super Eagles, their only goal of the tournament, they jubilated as if they won the cup. It could well have been a trophy for running around with giants and putting one behind the mighty Super Eagles which paraded illustrious football superstars is a feat by itself.

But of course, not Tahiti, but Brazil that staged the show also lifted the cup in a grand style. In an anticlimax of a finale Brazil switched on a beautiful performance against European and world champions, Spain to snatch the diadem. Brazil’s young team completely subdued and exposed the seemingly indomitable Spanish armada, exponents of the exotic tiki-taka brand of football. This must be a foretaste of what to expect next year when the world converge once again in that football grove known as Brazil for the real thing: the World Cup. You must have noticed especially, a new star in the galaxy called Neymar!

But our gallant Super Eagles was there, played three matches, won one and lost two. Though we did not scale the first round, it was a good outing for the national team with the added advantage of encountering quality teams like Uruguay and Spain. While the team drubbed Tahiti six to one after a troubled transit to the tournament (no thanks to the shoddy ways of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF), they lost to Uruguay and Spain but to keen-eyed footballers, they played good football, they played like African champions. As Coach Stephen Keshi said, they were defeated but not disgraced.

They were plagued by poor administrative support and injury: key players like Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike, Ogenyi Onazi and Kenneth Omeruo (in the last match). Had we these regulars, so much would have been different. What Nigerians must take away from the Confederation Cup is that Keshi’s team is taking shape quite well. Positions are beginning to solidify. Not in the last few years could Nigerians see a clear picture of their national team. The ‘technocrats’ at the Glass House must allow Keshi to complete the work he has started. Talk of vetting his selection now would amount to throwing spanner in the works; they want to impose players on the coach. Have you ever heard that a bunch of people sit somewhere and vet the team list of a Scolari, Del Bosque, etc? It is unthinkable. Coaches are employed to swim or sink. This Eagles will fly yet.
