  • Russia 2018: Fans urge Eagles to redeem Africa’s image

As the Super Eagles face  Croatia on Saturday in their group D opener, football fans in Ebonyi have urged the team to redeem Africa’s image at the on-going World Cup in Russia by defeating their opponent.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Egypt and Morocco lost their opening games 0-1 to Uruguay and Iran respectively on Friday, to record poor starts for the continent.

The fans, who spoke with NAN on Saturday in Abakaliki, reminded the Eagles that Africa places its hopes on them to show good example to Tunisia and Senegal, who would play subsequently.

Emmanuel Utobo, Director of Sports in Ebonyi, urged the players to overcome the pressure resulting from the burden of expectations placed on them.

“The players should play with utmost calmness, adhere to coaches’ instructions and disregard whatever views people might have about them.

“They should not lose hope in spite of any situation during the match as exemplified by Portugal during its 3-3 draw with Spain on Friday.

“The Portuguese, spearheaded by the indefatigable hat trick hero, Christiano Ronaldo, equalised late into the match as they were not disorganised in spite of surrendering a 2-1 lead in the first half,” he said.

Bright Nwaneri,  a football fan, urged Coach Gernot Rohr to ensure his midfield is not outclassed by the Croatians.

“The Croatians boast of a deadly midfield trio of Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Mateo Kovacic; Rohr should neutralise their onslaughts by fielding more players in that position.

“The Eagles should also play without tension and defend collectively, to cover the inadequacies of first choice goalkeeper, Francs Uzoho,” he said.

Jude Anyama, a Soccer Viewing Centre Operator, advised the football authorities not to exert too much pressure on the players.

“Every decision taken on the match should be left for the coach alone, so that Nigerians would hold him accountable for any result that emanates from it.

“We have passed the stage of querying his choice of players for the tournament, or those to be fielded during matches, but should accept any decision he takes,” he said.

Chief Mbakwe Oloh, a transporter and football fan, said Nigeria does not rely on a particular star for victory, pointing out that a situation of over-reliance on a star was the undoing of Egypt.

“Egypt’s problem is over reliance on Mohammed Salah and its performance gives credence to the fact that without Salah, there is no Egypt.

“Nigeria is lucky not to find itself in such situation and this will give the players, the impetus to showcase their talents at the world cup,” he said. (NAN)

  • Eagles mentally, physically ready, says Rohr

The Super Eagles are in a good mental and physical shape for tomorrow’s match against Croatia, Coach Gernot Rohr said yesterday as World Cup Russia 2018 got underway.

After a short opening ceremony, hosts Russia hammered Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening match.

Nigeria’s match against Croatia tomorrow in one of the two Group D clashes, as Argentina and Iceland play the other game.

“We are looking forward to the match with a lot of optimism. It will be a tough one, but we are physically and mentally ready. We had quality preparatory matches and trained twice at our final camp in Austria, and since arriving in Essentuki, we have done some useful tactical preparation.

“It is important to start well in a good tournament like this, and that is what we hope to do on on Saturday,” Rohr said.

Croatia star player Andrej Kramaric described tomorrow’s match as the toughest for his side.

The 26-year-old Croatian said  “I think it is Nigeria.  Against Nigeria we play the first, and for us the most important game. That game will open or close the door of the World Cup for us. Therefore, we need to apply our full concentration.”

He added: “This is a great generation. Our motivation is at a high level. We want to get to the knockout stage, and with some luck we can achieve a great result.”

Both teams are meeting for the first time at the World Cup. The Croatians will rely on the likes of Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic of Juventus, Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic and Ivan Rakitic of Barcelona.

The Nigerian team is largely made up of young players, about 17 of them making their first World appearances.

The Eagles can also rely on the experience of skipper Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa and Odion Ighalo.

Obi, who is also looking forward to a good game, said: “It is the dream of every footballer to play at the FIFA World Cup and we have to live that dream on Saturday (tomorrow). Croatia is a very good team with a lot of top class players and we have to be at our very best against them.

“This group is probably the toughest in the tournament; everyone is calling it the ‘group of death’. That is the motivation. We have given ourselves the target of coming out of this group just like we did in the African qualifying group that everyone gave the same tag.

“As our coach has said, we worked hard at both the camp in Austria and since we got to the team base camp in Essentuki. Our Football Federation also did well to get us to prepare in very good places devoid of distraction and now, it is our responsibility to do the nation proud by starting well against Croatia.”

Tomorrow will mark Nigeria’s sixth appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals, in seven tournaments since their first appearance at the 1994 finals in the USA.

The only time Nigeria has missed football’s biggest showpiece in the last quarter –century was in 2006, when a head-to-head rule knocked out the Eagles despite finishing on equal points with Angola.

Yesterday’s opening match at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, watched by a crowd of 78,011, gave the crowd a lot to cheer with goals from  Denis Cheryshev (who got a brace), Artem Dzyuba, Iury Gazinsky and Aleksander Golovin scored the goals.

The opening ceremony was led by British pop star Robbie Williams and Russian soprano Aida Garifullina in a 15-minute period.

Part of the ceremony was the entrance of former Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas and Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova with the World Cup trophy in a Louis Vuitton travel case.

Williams later performed two hits — “Let Me Entertain You” and “Rock DJ” — alongside some dancers and freestylers.

He was thereafter joined in a duet by Garifullina, a soloist from the Vienna State Opera, to sing one of his (Williams) hit songs “Angels”.

Three matches will be played today

  • Russia Police clamp down on prostitutes ahead Eagles arrival

Russia authorities have been busy raiding the city of Yessentuki for illegal sex workers as they clear the area ahead of Nigeria’s arrival for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Monday.

The Super Eagles who are drawn in Group D along with Argentina, Iceland and Croatia will be based in Yessentuki during the tournament.

According to reports from Russia, the women of easy virtue are anxiously waiting for the three-time African Champions who have been banned by head coach Gernot Rohr from having any dealings with them.

According to Vladimir Vladimirov, the Governor of the Stavropol Territory where Yessentuki is located, he said the police will make it impossible for the sex workers to operate their trade.

“Officials from Nigeria, Egypt and others will have their base in this city for the tournament and we have warned against patronage of illegal strippers and others, most brothels have also been told to simply close down.”

“However, for the 30-day tournament only those with a significant “krysha” (the Russian for “roof“), that sees them pay a percentage of their earnings to officials and police in return for protection, will be able to operate,” he added.

Russia President Vladimir Putin had described Russian prostitutes as the “best in the world”. Back in the early 90s, the sex industry in Russia was considered very notorious.

Previous events such as the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics have seen the Russian police impose harsh fines on sex workers and in some cases imprison them for the duration of the competition.

  • World Cup: Ezenwa to Wear Eagles No.1 Shirt

Goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa will adorn the number one jersey in Russia, while Spanish based Francis Uzoho has 23 leaving Daniel Akpeyi with shirt number 16.

This was revealed in a 59 second video online on the new squad numbers for the Super Eagles ahead of the Russia 2018 World Cup.

While skipper Mikel Obi retains his number 10, newly signed Brighton and Hove Albion player, Leon Balogun will settle for number six, and Russia based Byran Idowu will wear the number two shirt.

Forwards Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho will grace numbers 18 and 14, respectively. Midfielder Ogenyi Onazi is with number 17 jersey while recuperating Wilfred Ndidi will wear number four.

Portuguese based Tyronne Ebuehi will be seen in number 21, as fellow defender Chidozie Awaziem will put on number 20 while Abdullahi Shehu holds 12

The team continues its build up for the World cup, as it prepares to face Czech Republic on Wednesday in Austria.

Chinese based Odion Ighalo has nine, leaving newly capped Simeon Nwankwo with number 13, as Russia-based Ahmed Musa holds seven.

Chelsea’s Victor Moses stays with 11, as William Troost-Ekong has number five and Elderson Echiejile with three.

Jersey number 19 is given to John Ogu while Italy based Joel Obi has 15, leaving Oghenekaro Etebo with the number eight shirt and Kenneth Omeruo on 22.

  • International Friendly: Czech Rep study Eagles’ videos

.Set to redeem image against Nigeria

Czech Republic is not taking the encounter against Super Eagles for granted following their 4-0 bashing by Australia last Friday.

To underscore the importance of the Eagles’ tie, the Czech Republic Head Coach, Karel Jarolim on Sunday studied the video of the Nigeria, England duel as they prepare to face the three-time African champion in Austria on June 6.

A monitored report on www.radio.cz revealed that the Czechs are eager to go all out against the Eagles to redeem their image after their loss to Australia in the international friendly last Friday.

“The Nigeria match presents fresh opportunity to express the potential of the national team. We are getting prepared, studied their game against England and videos,” Jarolim has said.

Jarolim, former Czechoslovakia international footballer, has been seeking to reconstruct the team after failing to qualify for the World Cup and the retirement of many of country’s stars, including Tomas Rosicky and Petr Chech.

Meanwhile, Coach Gernot Rohr is expected to play the Czechs with best 11 from the 23- man list already submitted to FIFA for the Russia World Cup.

The German tactician is yet to secure victory from the last three World Cup build-up matches as England defeated Nigeria 2-1 at Wembley.

  • Wembley Show: This Eagles can fly but….

It will be safe to say that the first half of the encounter at the Wembley was an all England affair.

Early goal in the 7th minute by Cahill flagged off what could best be described as minutes of agony for the Nigerians.

Only two shots on target was all the Eagles could record in the entire first half. England captain Harry Kane must be a happy man as he increased the goal tally to compound Eagles woes. Very early in the match former international Jonathan Akpoborie noted that the scenario was not looking good.  Kenneth Uzoho conceded cheap goal especially the second goal by  England Captain, Harry Kane.

“Defenders make mistakes, that’s why goalkeepers are there, but at this level, if you can’t save that Harry Kane’s goal, then you have no business there” he had said shortly after Kane’s goal but again in fairness to Uzoho he also saved a few ugly situations that would have left Eagles down by four goals at the end of first half.

The rate at which Dele Alli, Sterling and Lingard were having a good run into the defence is one that must be checked. No doubt the Nigerian side was nervous in the first half and it showed.

But then 47th minute goal by Alex Iwobi became a ginger and the tunic even the Nigerian teeming fans were waiting for to come alive and it was singing from then all the way.

But Iwobi’s strike did not really come as a surprise he appeared in the first half to be the most confident on the Eagles side on the pitch.  At 57 minutes the match appeared more balanced the Lions were no longer having a field day. The second half was more purposeful for Eagles.

Mikel’s shot on target in the 69th minute was really goal bound. The commentators and analysts agree that there was better contest in the second half.  The bottom line is, with a little touch here and there, the Eagles can hold their own but must aim to come to the party early.

In a real world cup situation allowing over dominance in the first half only to hope to make amends in the seconds may not guarantee fantastic result.

Come to think of it why how come Eagles appear to be bumping on each other especially while going for aerial balls? Are they finding their new and impressive jersey hard to recognise?  The Eagles lost the match 2-1 but this looks more like a more respectable score line, many were scared it would have been more than that.

The changes made by Coach Rohr had instant impact which implies that he knows the team and is likely to get it right going forward.

  • Russia 2018: Simon not fit for World Cup, Rohr says

Eagles Head Coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that injured Moses Simon would not be fit to merit a berth in the final 23-man squad for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rohr stated this during his pre-match press conference before the team’s training session at the Wembley Stadium on Friday.

Simon was initially ruled out of the World Cup by Head Coach Gernot Rohr after the player’s first scan results confirmed he would be out of the tournament.

However, Moses requested for a further scan in the UK, with Rohr granting him his wish to prove his fitness ahead of the world cup.

Reports on the NFF official Twitter handle on Wednesday had quoted Coach Rohr as saying that he was willing to wait and see if the player could make a late push for the World Cup in Russia.

But Rohr hinted that the Gent of Belgium winger had finally been ruled out of the World Cup after a latest medical scan confirmed that he won’t be fit for the competition.

“We have all our players in camp. Victor Moses was the last to arrive camp and he has had just one training session with us and will have another today (Friday).

“All the players are ready for the World Cup except for Simon Moses who is out for four weeks,” he said.

NAN also reports that with the team’s first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme also ruled out of the World Cup on health grounds, the fight for Eagles’ number one shirt has generated heated arguments among the fans.

Young goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, seems to be the favourite after the team’s last three games against Poland, Serbia and DR Congo but Rohr insisted that the position was still up for grabs.

“Uzoho came in against Argentina and since then he has been showing confidence and making great efforts. However, we have three goalkeepers,” he said.

The former Niger Republic and Gabon coach also played down the Super Eagles’ chances of becoming the first African country to win the World Cup.

“We are not among the favourites. If you look at the FIFA ranking, you will see there are teams who are better than us.

“It is important for us not to think we can win the World Cup,” Rohr said.

He also highlighted the importance of Saturday’s friendly match against England to the team’s quest of having a successful outing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The three-time African champions will face the Three Lions in their second pre-World Cup friendly at Wembley Stadium.

Captain Mikel Obi, Alex Iwobi and a number of first team regulars were not involved from the start in Monday’s 1-1 draw against Democratic Republic of Congo in Port Harcourt.

However, Rohr noted that he would name a strong side against Gareth Southgate’s men.

“Tomorrow, we would play a big team like England, it is an important game for us.

“It will be an interesting game for us. In the game against Congo, we didn’t play our best team, but we will change things against England and play our best players.

“The atmosphere is going to be great and we hope to enjoy it and possibly win the game,” he said. (NAN)

  • Focus shifts to Uyo for Eagles, Atletico tango

Football fans around the country will on Tuesday the 22nd of May throng the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, where the Super Eagles will test their strength against LaLiga giants, Atletico Madrid, in the inaugural edition of the GOtv MAX Cup.

Atletico Madrid is one of the biggest three teams in the LaLiga, where they have had an impressive season by qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League and defeating French side Marseille in Wednesday’s Europa League final, making them three time Europa champions. In

European football, La Rojiblancos, as Atletico Madrid are called, are in the top tier and have played in two of the last four UEFA Champions League finals. In Spain, they are the only team to have broken the Barcelona-Real Madrid grip on LaLiga since 2004, winning the title in 2014.

Ex-Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju, who played for Racing Satander and Real Sociedad in LaLiga, is delighted that a team of Atletico’s calibre is coming to Nigeria.

Javier Tebas, LaLiga President, said: “This is a historic announcement (of the visit) and we are excited to share this news with our Nigerian fans: Atletico de Madrid, one of Liga’s greatest clubs will come to Nigeria and give our fans the chance to enjoy watching their stars up close. Africa and Nigeria, in particular, are very important for us as there is a lot of love for Spanish football, something we are proud of.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Martin Mabutho, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, MultiChoice Nigeria said: “We are delighted to bring one of the three biggest clubs from LaLiga to Nigeria in what we believe will be a historic visit. Atletico Madrid is one of the top clubs in LaLiga and GOtv customers and indeed all football fans in Nigeria will have the rare opportunity of watching the stars play the Super Eagles right here on Nigerian soil”.

  • Amokachi, Eagles and the road to Russia

History has an uncanny way of vindicating the just. It only takes time. This writer is always unsparing whenever Nigerian coaches handle the Super Eagles, largely because they hardly come clean in the team’s affairs. When they are not picking players on other parameters than current form, they are bullying the younger ones to accept what they couldn’t stomach as players. They create a facade around themselves under the guise of instilling discipline whereas they do worse things, such as engineering players’ revolts when their demands are outstanding.

It is still a misery how coaches who claimed to be instilling discipline in the players come short when it comes to persuading them to back off from such revolts during big competitions, such as the Confederations Cup and the World Cup. These coaches don’t care about the odium they pour on the country with such disgraceful acts for as long as they achieve their goals. The excuse that the federation’s bosses would misappropriate cash amounts to cheap blackmail. Thankfully, the law of retribution catches up with them – Nigeria has never won any competition smeared with such shows of shame.

‘’Conscience is an open wound, only truth can heal it.’’ ( Uthman Dan Fodio) This quote rings so true about what transpired in the Super Eagles’ camp in 2014 in the explosive interview which former striker Daniel Amokachi granted AOIFootball.com on the Eagles’ way to the Brazil 2014 World Cup, where Nigeria was eliminated in the second round by France. Of course, the defeat came less than 10 hours after the team and their coaches spent the better part of the night before the match sharing $3.8 million which the Federal Government sent to avert a walkover. The squad threatened to boycott the France game during the revolt in Sao Paulo.

Ordinarily, I would have ignored the report. But AOIFootball.com is the NFF’s official online platform where those who run the federation talk directly to the players and coaches. It was set up, following allegations by players and officials of being misquoted in the media. So, Amokachi couldn’t have been misquoted by the NFF online platform.

Besides, KweseSports and Amokachi are like Siamese twins. They would have whispered into Da Bull’s ears about the gravity of his allegations since the other party to the discussion is dead. He would have authorised the publication. It should, therefore, be discussed, taking only the message not the messenger or the accused.

Going to the World Cup in Brazil, there were tales that suggested a rift among the coaches, with many alleging that one of them forced the players to buy one of his wrist watches as a basis for qualifying to play in the team. It was dismissed as one of the tantrums of the media. But, it was clear that all wasn’t well with the technical crew, considering Amokachi’s pot-shots.

“Brown, for me, was one player that I regret that we did not take to the World Cup in 2014,” Amokachi told KweséESPN, speaking for the first time on Brown Ideye’s shocking exclusion from the Eagles.

“Hundred percent I didn’t know how he didn’t make that list. I never saw it coming that he didn’t make the list till when the list came out and we found out. I think I probably had a lot of fights with some people that I shouldn’t have, but it happened because I saw no reason why such a player should be left out. We ended up going to the World Cup with players that even me I don’t even know,” Amokachi revealed.

“I think it is very tough if a coach is already an agent. It is very, very difficult, and that is why I always say you cannot be a coach and be an agent at the same time.

“When the World Cup comes around, you always have a lot of new players showing up. Players who will decide that they are Nigerians and bring confusion to the team. When you find yourself in that situation, you try to advise, because you have agents that will be calling left, right and centre. If a coach is an agent, he will fall a victim too. Those are things that we really need to avoid. There is no room to be trying new players,” Amokachi concluded.

He didn’t mention those responsible for the decision. But what stands out clearly is that the list was done with the coaches’ consent. And it says a lot on why Nigerian coaches cannot be trusted with such sensitive matters. Isn’t this the reason Nigerian coaches’ actions are vetted by chieftains of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), who carry the can when Nigeria fails while the coaches take all the credits in victory?

What makes Amokachi’s revelation more disturbing is that the coaches in the 2014 squad were former Nigeria internationals who also made their marks playing for European teams . They were expected to replicate here the settings they found in Europe. They were also seen to have made enough cash to be able to shun foreign scouts, lobbyists and influence peddlers from the corridors of power.

The KweseESPN report said: ‘’It is a stunning admission by Amokachi, who went on to suggest that outside influences may have played a part in the striker getting cut in favour of players like Michael Uchebo and Uche Nwofor, both of whom had a combined total of six international appearances prior to the World Cup. Four of those combined caps (two each) were in the friendly games just before the squad was named.’’

Sadly, Amokachi didn’t have the guts to name who picked the squad raising doubts about his intentions in granting such a controversial interview. Why did he not cry out when the list was released? Was he scared that he could be dropped from the team? I don’t think so, given Amokachi’s pedigree in the game and his popularity. Who knows, the team could have gone further than they did in Brazil, four years ago.

The NFF should always get coaches to work in harmony. The federation should routinely hold talks with the coaches to gauge how they relate with each other. Except there is a synergy among the coaches, the team would totter during matches.

Amokachi’s poked conscience has compelled him to speak the truth, which is the only way forward. He spoke late but the message wasn’t lost on Eagles manager Gernot Rohr, who rightly dropped Brown Ideye, who has not been a regular in the squad since he took charge.

Rohr’s 30-man list is a departure from the past where at least four names would have been added to the authorised provisional 35-man list by FIFA, where each country would pick its final 23-man squad. Under Nigerian coaches, a horde of players with many unknown to lovers of the game would have been picked under the guise of giving everyone a chance to prove their mettle. This is where the sharp practices which Amokachi highlighted start.

Indeed, I’m still pinching myself to find out if Samson Siasia criticised Rohr’s 30-man squad. If he did, he owes those of us who questioned his selections as Eagles chief coach an apology. Siasia scandalised this writer for daring to criticise his list. Siasia spared no word in deriding coaches and ex-internationals who queried his decisions, especially when the country stood behind Vincent Enyeama, asking Siasia to forgive him. He stood his grounds but paid dearly for it when Nigeria drew 2-2 against Guinea in Abuja. We didn’t qualify for that edition’s Africa Cup of Nations. Siasia got the boot.

Glad to know that Siasia is canvassing the inclusion of Efe Ambrose, four years after his below par outing in Brazil. This is the problem with Nigerian coaches who are eternally committed to players they discovered. Siasia, Junior Ajayi had his time with the Eagles. He appears to be a club player. Besides, he is injury-prone. This is the difference with foreign coaches. they consider factors which our coaches cast an indulgent eye on.

The fixation of Nigerian coaches has killed many enterprising players who rot away because those manning their positions in the Eagles were discovered by the coach. Products of our successful age-grade teams, especially the Golden Eaglets, have melted from our sights like ice-cream under the scorching sun – no thanks to our local coaches’ fixation.

Today, Nigeria is heading for the Mundial with its youngest crop of players. This means that we are building for the future, using the World Cup. If we qualify for the second round, we would have equalled our feats in the last five editions in which we participated.

Nigeria is not alone with her armada of young boys for the Russia 2018 World Cup. England’s 23-man squad isn’t anything different from ours. This means that the two countries will have players ready for the big stage by Qatar 2022. That is the way forward, except that England will see theirs through while Nigeria’s may be destroyed by the diabolical machinations of those fighting to be members of the next NFF board.
