Manu  remembers Kafa, begs Otu  over house gifts to Eaglets

Golden Eaglets  coach Manu Garba has yet again  called  on the  government and people of Cross River State to promptly redeem the house gifts pledged to players and officials of the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning team, in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Manu painfully regrets that the unfulfilled promise remained a sour point for not only the team members, but also that of its late equipment manager Muhammed Kafa, who unfortunately passed away almost a year ago, without getting the house gift promised by the Cross River state government led at that time by former governor, Liyel Imoke.

“When I remember Muhammed Kafa, one of the things that come to mind was his desire to get the house  pledged to all the  ten officials and 21 players  that won the World Cup in 2013 by the then Governor Senator Liyel  Imoke,” Garba said.” The house gift pledge has gradually paled into becoming an illusion because it has not been redeemed 11 years after Governor Imoke made the pledge in Calabar, and nine years after he left office as governor of the state.

“To think that it’s almost a year that Muhammed left us after that ghastly accident in Kaduna without getting the house is even more painful because that was one of his dreams.

“As we remember Muhammed, I want to use this opportunity to beg incumbent Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, to redeem this pledge that was expressly  pledged to players and officials of the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning team by his predecessor. This is a good way he can help immortalise Muhammed and help ameliorate the pains of his family. Besides, it will be a morale booster to others to always give their best for their fatherland.”

Recall that precisely on 15th   November 2013,Governor Imoke  during  a reception inside the  state’s council chamber for the victorious FIFA U-17 World Cup  team of  2013,offered  house gifts to the 21 players and 10 officials for doing the country’s proud  in the United Arab Emirates.

“We want to make an investment with you in property,” Senator Imoke  said in front of camera and in the presence of the then Minister of Youth & Sports Development, Mallam Bolaji  Abdulahi and other chieftains of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) led by the then President Aminu Maigari.

He added amid cheers: “We have  a new housing estate  already being developed  and at the end of that  exercise; completion of those estates,  each one of you  would have a small piece of property that is your own and that  would have been fully developed; that  you can  rent out or  occupy.”

But Garba said it  was shocking that  the pledge  made  by Senator Imoke in 2013  on behalf of  the government  and people of Cross River State is yet to materialise.

“Of course, we were all excited  when Senator Imoke made the pronouncement at the Government House in Calabar when he hosted us for winning the FIFA U-17 World  Cup in 2013 but we are yet to be given the houses as promised, even though the housing estate has long been completed and occupied,” Garba said, adding that efforts made during the tenure of  Imoke’s successor, Professor Ben  Ayade bore no fruitful results.

He continued “The  FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning team  of 2013 was the baby of  the Cross River State because we  were camped at  the Princeville Hotel  in Calabar for many months  and we  played all our qualifying matches there but nothing  was done  about  the house gifts during the tenure of Professor Ayade.

“But since government is a continuous process, we are pleading with Governor Bassey Otu  to use his good office  to fulfil this pledge made on behalf of the state by Senator Imoke.

“ I’m also seeking the intervention of Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, who incidentally comes from Cross River State, to ensure that justice is done on our behalf.

“ We have waited so long and  just last  year, we lost one  of us,  our hard working equipment manager, Muhammed Kafa, but   I think it will be in his good memory if the house gifts are redeemed and show that our labour of winning the World Cup in 2013 is not in vain,” added Garba.

WAFU B U17 Tourney: Sanusi urges Eaglets to go for bronze  against Starlets

Global youth football powers Nigeria and Ghana will today  battle it out for the bronze medals of the on-gong WAFU B U17 Championship in Accra, Ghana.

Given their pedigree at this level, both nations should have been preparing to test strength and savvy for who deserved the trophy, in the final match of the competition. However, the Eaglets were downed by Cote d’Ivoire’s Baby Elephants while the Starlets were plucked by the Baby Etalons of Burkina Faso in the semi-finals.

With the West African Football Union still unable to provide clarity on the number of teams that will proceed to the 2025 Africa U17 Cup of Nations from WAFU B, General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi has charged the Eaglets to go all out and execute the third-place encounter like a final match.

“We are still awaiting clarity on the number of teams that will qualify to the U17 AFCON from this tournament. Some people have said only three teams; some said four teams. It is therefore important that our boys go out there and play their hearts out to finish in third place.

“The Black Starlets will not be an easy ride. They are the home side and they will bank on the support of the fans. But our boys have what it takes to achieve victory.”

The third-place match will kick off at 3pm Ghana time (4pm Nigeria time) at the University of Accra Stadium, ahead of the final match between Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire, which commences at 6pm Ghana time (7pm Nigeria time).

  • U17 Nations cup semis: forget about past victories Manu warns Eaglets

Ahead of their semifinal clash against Guinea U17 Wednesday, Eaglets coach Manu Garba has told his boys to forget past victories and treat the clash as final showdown.

While admitting that the achievements made so far at the on going championship in Tanzania is heartwarming, the party according to the former Flying Eagles coach must be put on hold to fight all the way to the final.

“We topped the group and we didn’t lose any match that is good, but we must put all that aside and give full concentration to the semifinal clash like I said will be very tactical, “he said

Guinea finished as runners up in Group B with six points in three games to set up semifinal clash against Nigeria.

Garba who won the FIFA U-17 world cup in 2013 and the 2015 Africa U-20 championship in 2015, is hoping to add the U-17 Nations cup title to his resume. Nigeria last won the championship in 2007 in Togo, finished as runners up in 2013 in Morocco, and in the 4th place in the 2015 edition in Niamey.

In comparison Guinea’s highest level in the championship has been the third place finish. Interestingly the West African country have finished in the third place three times 1995,2015 and 2017 and will no doubt be dreaming to go beyond that in  Dar es Salaam.

  • Eaglets play out 1-1 draw against Uganda, to face Guinea in semis

World cup bound Eaglets Saturday played out a 1-1 draw with their Ugandan counterparts in the last group match of the ongoing Under 17 Nations cup in Tanzania.

The Ugandan who desperately needed a win to hazard a chance of progressing shot into the lead in the 68th minute of the match through substitute John Alou. The Eaglets however came from behind to level up in the 74th minute thanks to Ibraheem Jabaar who got a timely assist from Olakunle Olusegun.

The Ugandans who afterwards mounted a lot of pressure with intent to increase the tally failed to achieve the dream as the Eaglets stood their ground but wasted some begging chances that would have handed them outright victory to ensure three wins in three matches.

The team nonetheless finished the group stage on high, topping the group with seven points above Angola who finished in the second position thus showing both hosts and Uganda the exit doors.

Eaglets will await the outcome of the ties between Guinea versus Morocco and Cameroon versus Senegal on Sunday.  Cameroon lead group B with 6 points going into Sunday’s match while Guinea occupy the second position with three points going into Sunday’s match.

Morocco and Senegal have already crashed with just a point each. Eaglets are likely to face Guinea in the semifinals while Cameroon who will be looking to consolidate their lead Sunday will face Angola in the second semifinals on Wednesday. The finals of the championship take place on April 28 at National Stadium, Dar es Salaam.

  • Eaglets must beat Uganda U-17 — Nwosu

Henry Nwosu has urged Nigeria U-17 to go all out for victory against Uganda U-17 in their final Africa Cup of Nations Group A game on Saturday.

The Golden Eaglets lead Group A standings with six points following back-to-back victories against Tanzania and Angola.

The Nigerians only need at least a draw to see them through to the semi-final of the competition and qualify for the U-17 World Cup in Brazil. However, the former Nigeria international, who played 60 times for the Super Eagles and scored eight goals, has charged the five-time world champions to look beyond a draw in the match.

“So far they have done very well. Already they have six points and have not lost any game, kudos to them. Against Uganda, they must not be too comfortable they have to go for a win and put in their best in the game,” Nwosu told Goal.

“Winning should be their aim against Uganda because if they focus on a draw they might end up losing the game. They must know that they are playing for themselves first, before playing for Nigeria, so they must do everything to continue doing well.”

Nigeria missed several scoring chances in their last game against Angola and Nwosu wants them to pray for luck against Uganda as well as work on their individual skills.

“I will advise them to pray for luck to be able to score because it is a factor and they should work towards it by improving on their individual skills.”

The Golden Eaglets have won the U17 Africa Cup of Nations twice in 2001 and 2007.

  • U17 Nations cup:Eaglets in consolidation mission against Angola

After a thrilling opener against hosts Tanzania on Sunday, the Eaglets will file out today against their Angolan counterparts at the 60,000 capacity Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar Es Salaam in what could be described as a consolidation mission.

The Garba Manu tutored side fired five goals past their Tanzanian opponents in the opening match but it was not an easy feat as the hosts were equally in goal scoring mood getting four goals past the Eaglets.

Indications that it would be goals harvest day, emerged when Alfred Olaniyan opened scoring of the Eaglets in the 21st minute, but Tanzania immediately responded a minute later thanks to Edmund Godfrey, the match eventually ended 5-4 in favour of Nigeria.

Should Eaglets defeat Angola who only managed a lone goal victory over Uganda on Sunday, they would automatically pick one of the tickets to FIFA under 17 World cup in Brazil even with an inconsequential last group  match against Uganda on Saturday at the Chamazi Stadium.

The Eaglets are eyeing a third Africa Under 17 Nations cup trophy on one hand and a ticket to their 9th FIFA under 17 world cup appearance. Nigeria has won the world cup in this category five times viz 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013 and 2015. She has also ended up as runners up three times viz 1987, 2001 and 2009.

Although soccer fans who watch the Tanzania versus Nigeria match on Sunday gave the boys a pat on the back for emerging victorious, some however say the team needs to be more clinical to avoid losing grip especially when faced with a more compact side.

  • NIGERIA 5-4 TANZANIA: Eaglets win nine-goal thriller

Five-time world champion, Golden Eaglets of Nigeria have defeated their hosts, Tanzania 5-4 in the opening match of the 2019 U17 African Nations Cup in Tanzania.

The Eaglets lost their first half two-lead goal to Tanzania, having ended the first stanza 3-1. Tanzania came back into the game to catch up and take the lead 4-3 in the early minutes of the second half.

Olaniyan Olatomi had put Nigeria in front in the early minutes before Edmund John put one back for Tanzania. Wisdom Ubani and Amoo Akinkunmi increased the tally before heading into the dugout to make the scoreline 3-1.

Eight minutes into the second half, Kelvin John reduced the goal deficit as Suleman Shaibu levelled the scoreline from the spot to make it 3-3.

Edmund John completed his brace from the spot for Tanzania to lead for the first time in the pulse-racing game.

Wisdom Ubani’s 30-yard fantastic freekick went straight into Tanzanians net. Jabaar Ibrahim put Nigeria back to make sure they have their maximum three points.

  • INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT: Eaglets to play in Turkey

Five –time world champions, Golden Eaglets of Nigeria, will participate in an invitational tournament in Turkey as part of its preparations for the 2019 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations scheduled for Tanzania in April.

Nigeria’s U-17 boys swept all before them at the WAFU U-17 Tournament in Niger Republic in September 2018 to pick up the trophy and also qualify as West Zone B’s flagbearers in the continental finals in Tanzania, following an adjustment to the format of the qualifiers.

Coach Manu Garba, who also led the team to global triumph in the UAE six years ago, has assured that his boys have imbibed the mentality of champions without the overconfidence that sometimes constitute the soft underbelly of such mentality.

The invitational tournament in Turkey will hold from March 1-10 and will see a number of the teams qualified for the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations taking part, alongside a number of European teams.

Nigeria play in Group A at the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations alongside hosts Tanzania, Angola and Uganda. All the participating teams (except the host nation) won the championships of their respective regions to qualify. Only West Zone A, to which 2017 champions Mali belongs, produced two finalists.

Manu added: “We will prepare very well to conquer from our group in Tanzania, in order to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals coming up in Peru.”

Group B has Guinea, Cameroon, Morocco and Senegal, with all four semi finalists guaranteed places at the FIFA World Cup finals.

The 2019 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations will hold April 14-28. Nigeria won the world title in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013 and 2015.
