  • Another earth tremor in Abuja

For the second time in less than two months, there was an earth tremor in the Federal capital territory yesterday.

It occurred in highbrow Mautama district of the nation’s capital, Abuja

Earth tremor is a relatively  short-lived movement of the earth’s surface caused by the same forces that produce earthquakes

In September, a tremor occurred in Mbappe and parts of the Maitama District.

Yesterday’s tremor lasted for about one minute around 12.26pm, with an intensity of about 3.0 on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, which means it was felt indoors.

The government has launched an investigation into the tremor through the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development

The minister assured Abuja residents that there was no cause for panic.

Mr. Ishaku Kigbu, Special Assistsnt to Minister of State (Mines and Stell Development) Bawa Bwari, said yesterday:.”The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), an Agency of the ministry, saddled with the responsibility of such occurrence had despatched a technical team to the location for assessment.

“The report said that an internal response protocol was immediately activated, and relevant Government agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and other stakeholders were informed.

“The preliminary findings indicated that the tremor occurred 12.26 p.m. around Panama Street in Maitama District.”.

According to him, after field evaluations, the NGSA determined that

He said that further inspections by the agency revealed that there was no structural damage

  • No tremors should be taken for granted – NIBBRI DG

Prof. Danladi Matawal, Director-General, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute ( NIBRRI ) has warned the nation not to take any tremors for granted.

Matawal in a statement he signed on Monday in Abuja said that there was need to search immediately where the recent tremors in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were being propagated from.

There was earth shaking that happened around Mpape and part of Maitama District of FCT last Thursday.

He further advised the nation to design a set of actions to mitigate the tremors effect if it was man-made or artificial, whether from deep explosives or mining.

“Are we constructing a tunnel in Abuja? Then the explosive waves must be attenuated and dumped at the source of the explosion.

“City residents also need to be warned and trained on responses to such an impending disturbance.

“ If natural, then we should prepare for evacuation because major earth tectonic activities are always preceded pre shocks and minor tremors due to the straining and splitting of pieces of plates near the epicentre.

“ Volcanoes and Earthquakes are calamities and Nigeria is not prepared for that and we must believe that with the calm already established, we can still claim our extinct innocence,’’ he said.

He said no scientist could disprove that the entire Nigeria was not extinct as there were no records of recent volcano or earthquake in recorded history in the country.

The director general however, maintained that all it took to translate from “Extinct’’ to “Active’’ was one major Seismic activity.

According to him, for the purposes of scientific and engineering technocrats, the nation must watch out for the reasons for the tremors.

“It is expected that by now, a set of experts and non-experts should be brainstorming somewhere in FCT over the matter.

“Experts and non-experts from Ministry of Defence, Mines and Solid Minerals, Police, Science & Tech, Transport, NASDRA, NEMA, Fire Service, COREN, Geological Society among others.

“On Sunday, we had account of someone who lives in Mpape who said dogs, in particular, barked relentlessly. While we prayed fervently that this is not a natural phenomenon because of the extinct nature of our geomorphology.

“Nonetheless the first warning of seismic activity in active regions of the world is animal behaviour.

“ Dogs will bark wildly, cats will ran frantically, rats will run frenzy in the house; horses will break their enclosures, etc.

“This is because their extra sensory senses from whiskers makes them sense activity in the earth’s crust when bits and pieces of the crust are fracturing along a prospective fault line instigated at fracturing epicenter.’’

Matawal said that the same happened in a major rock burst as it was principally the same process of release of huge strain energies.

According to him, people should watch out for signs and the solution of tremor if it is of high risk (Rickter Scale of 2.5 and above) is to run to open parks and fields with family and pets.

“All seismic activities are accompanied by four waves. I already mentioned the P-waves which are the most destructive because they crumble the earth’s surface and any structure on it. They cause compression of the ground surface.

“The second is the S-waves which are shear waves. If you see a fault on the ground surface, they are caused by these shear waves.

“The others are Raleigh and Love waves which cause no damage but temporary dumbness in human beings because they compress the air pretty much like slapping in the ear.

“The major cause of death is buildings and infrastructure created by mankind. Imagine if a Dam breaks due to Seismic activity as well as falling buildings and bridges, City Fires, among others,’’ he said.

The director general said he joined the team rushed to Lapai in Niger State over the report of an earthquake in the area in 2011 or 2012.

He said the team found a huge, truly massive rock outcrop bursting and cracking, a Weathering phenomenon.

Matawal noted that the huge strain energy released by the cracking mass of rock actually shook the area for some days as it released Primary (comprehensive) and Secondary (Shear) seismic waves that frightened everyone.

  • Earth tremor: Saki lives in fear and anxiety

Earth tremor: Saki lives in fear and anxiety

Saki community in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State in the recent time has been faced with earth tremor, SINA FADARE, who visited the scene reports.

RESIDENTS of Saki community around February this year were woken up by a loud strange voice that many confessed they had never experienced in their lives. The whole community where the incident happened simultaneously rushed out to see what could have produced such a loud noise and vibration. But they saw nothing and had no clue.

    Like sands on the roofs

Few hours again, the incident occurred three times, there was palpable fear and anxiety; they could not fathom what could have happened in the rustic community. Ever since the incident which later repeatedly occurred for about three months, the people of the town could no longer sleep with their eyes closed. Anxiety, fear of the unknown became their companion and their quiet environment has never remained the same again.

The incident occurred in some of the communities SUCH AS Abimbola Lay-out, Salam Salam, Medinat and Veterinary area of the town. To a visitor, visiting the ancient town for the first time the topic on the lips of all and sundry was the recent earth tremor in the vicinity.

Sharing his experience with this reporter, Mr. Peter Adeniyi who has been living in Medinat area in the last ten years said that he had never experienced such vibration in his entire life

“I was in the house that day preparing to go to the shop when the incident occurred. I suddenly heard a loud and strange ‘voice’ that shook the entire building as if some small stones were poured on the roof of the house almost everywhere. I rushed out to see what happened; it was outside that l saw plenty people on the street asking the same question, ‘what happened’?”

Adetunji who is a telephone accessories dealer noted that the second day incident was similar to the first one, “Similarly, I rushed out to my wife’s shop nearby to see if she was okay and the children, I saw a lot of people on the road with fear written over their faces. Some are calling their relatives somewhere in the town to ask if they also felt the same vibration.”

Recounting his own similar experience, Mr. Taofik Adesina who is also living in Medinat area said he had never experienced such vibration since he had been living in the area in the last twelve years. “The one that I can remember vividly was the first one that happened around February. It was as if sands were being poured on the roof of the house. We all rushed out of the house and saw people outside who had just felt same vibration.”

According to him, the incident had thrown the community into   confusion because nobody is sure what could happen next.” Some residents are packing out of the area in droves, but the question is ‘where will the landlord and others who have no other place to go run to’?

The Nation gathered that when the incident became frequent, the community sent some people to the nearby Army barrack to inquire whether they were the ones denoting bombs that were creating vibrations in their community. The response was negative. They also went to the local government secretariat to intimate the council chairman what was happening in their vicinity. The council quickly informed the relevant government agency, the ministry of Land and Environment at Ibadan what the community had been passing through.

Their efforts yielded result as State Government delegation led by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Chief Teju Ishola visited the scene, appealed to the residents to remain calm; adding that governments both at the state and federal levels would proffer solution to the problem.

In his own lamentation, a resident at Abimbola layout, Prince Layi Adebowale who conducted this reporter round all the affected areas said the incident still remains a dream to him.

Adebowale who moved into the area about five years ago said the earth tremor that occurred in the vicinity has generated a lot of panic and uncertainty as some tenants had to pack out due to fear that the issue might aggravate into a calamity.

“When l heard the vibration, I thought that maybe the sound came from a quarry nearby, but when it was  more frequent,  we were confronted with the dawn of reality that it was an earth tremor. The people of this area are now living in fear and trepidation,” he said

Expressing similar fear, Mr. Asamu Mayowa Hadi who has been living in the area in the last 15 years said the experience he passed through will remained with him for life, “I was sleeping when the incident occurred three times that particular day, the whole building shook as if it will fall, but when I went out to see what happened people in the community trooped out and were relating their different experiences.”

    Living in fear

To Mrs. Fola Adebowale, who resides in Abimbola layout, the experience was like a nightmare, she was in the kitchen when she heard a loud sound that shook everywhere. Narrating her experience she said, “The children that were in the bathroom ran out for fear that something was about to happen. Ever since then, the tremor had occurred severally, the people are packing away from this place,” she lamented.

The Nation gathered that when the incident occurred, the member of the community got in touch with Olajide Olatubosun who is representing Saki-West/ Saki East and Atisbo local government in the House of Representatives. The lawmaker raised the issue at the floor of the House under matter of urgency.

In a letter dated June 9, 2016, which was addressed to the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara and entitled: “Matter of urgent public importance (standing Order VIII rule 46) urgent call on the Federal Government to investigate the persistence earth tremor currently being experienced in Saki, the headquarters of Saki-West local government area of Oyo State,” called the attention of the House and Federal Government to the “persistent vibrations/tremor in Saki.”

According to him “anytime the earth vibration/tremor occurs, the building and other physical structures in the affected areas would shake violently and this, he said was responsible for a large army of internally displaced persons (IDP), as they had to vacate their homes, farmlands and their places of business.”

Against this background, the federal government deployed a team of experts made up of Geologists and Seismologists through the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics, (CGG), Toro, Bauchi State. The team was headed by Dr. Adepelumi Adekunle Abraham of the Dept. of Geology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The team pointed out that “Our findings showed that the earth tremor that was experienced in the Saki area is a series of fore-shock, main-shock and after-shock of a small scale earth-tremor with local magnitude 2.5 on the Richter scale that originated along the Ifewara, Romanche and Charcot fault system in the Atlantic Ocean that passed through Saki town. These mega structure are supposedly the longest linear feature within the Precambrian basement complex of Nigeria, and extends northwards from Ijebu-Ode area in southwestern Nigeria through Okemesi area to Zungeru and beyond to Kalangai in northwestern Nigeria (They are deep-seated mega-lineaments) that transcends the south-western part of the country.”

Though the team said that the earth tremor that occurred in the community was of a minimal magnitude, it however called for the installation of earthquake monitoring devices that will be able to monitor the affected areas.

At a meeting organised by the landlord Association in Abimbola Layout area of the community which the Nation attended, they charged the federal government as a matter of urgency to provide and install the needed scientific gadgets that will assist in solving the problem at hand.

Speaking on behalf of the Association, Sarafadeen Lateef said the community is aware that the riddle of the tremor that occurred in the area can only be solved by scientific approach adding that the people of the area are ready to co-operate with the expert in order to get a desirable result.

“The issue of earthquake cannot be handled with a kid’s glove, though we pray it does not happen. We are aware that it will take a lot of studies to detect what is going around on in this place. He insisted that the people of the area are not yet displaced, though the officials from National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) visited the community.”

Speaking on the visitation of NEMA and the earth tremor saga in the vicinity, the Bagii of Saki-land, High Chief Ghazali Olagoke Abdur- Rasheed said the NEMA visitation just coincided with the time that the earth tremor occurred, adding that there are some pockets of disaster that occurred in the area and destroyed a lot of houses and properties but nobody noticed because “we are far away in the hinterland.”

“There was a time that a lorry loaded with petrol ran into a compound and the properties and the buildings went up in flames and the affected people were displaced. We equally experienced flood and storm disaster which displaced some people. We complained to the government through our representative in the National Assembly and the NEMA people came to see the degree of damage. Incidentally, their visit concided with the earth tremor incident, Olatunbosun who is representing us in the National Assembly drew the attention of NEMA to what had been happening in the community.”

Abdulwasil Musa who is representing Saki in Oyo State House of Assembly explained that the state government has linked up with the necessary agencies to be alert in case of any further earth tremor.

According to him, after raising the issue on the floor of the House, the Governor set up a committee which visited the community adding that the government is on top of the issue.

Expressing similar optimism, the Special Adviser to the State Government on Solid Mineral and the Chairman of the committee, Mathew Oyedokun noted that they are on top of the issue.

Speaking in his office in Ibadan, he noted that members of the committee made up of relevant government agencies, experts and professionals from the University of Ibadan, visited the community for on the spot assessment.

“We were saddled with the responsibility of visiting the scene of the incident, ascertain what actually happened and find out what the government can do to prevent such occurrence in the future. Because of the conflicting and alarming report we are hearing about the incident, we designed a questionnaire for the people of Saki to tell us from the horse’s mouth what actually happened in their community.”

He explained that from all the data gathered by the committee and oral evidences from the people of the community, the   degree of the earth tremor was minor like 2.3, adding that the people just felt the vibration. He however said that the committee is yet to present its report to Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Thinking along Oyedokun’s line of thought, Prof. Moshood Tijani of the Department of Geology, University of Ibadan said what happened in Saki was not earth tremor but a wave of rumbling that produces vibration. According to him, “All I can say for now is that it was a strange occurrence. Before one could ascertain what actually happened, one has to carry out a lot of tests and measurements. All my investigation has not confirmed to me that it was a tremor. What I will say is that there was a sort of earth rumbling or strange sound that happened in the area.

“All the indices that will tell me that it is tremor I did not get it. But this situation of earth rumbling can graduate to a tremor. If you say it is earth tremor, the people will experience shaking, something that hangs on the wall will fall down. Tremor is usually an occurrence and people will not hear of it again.  It is energy and the wave is looking for a crack to move, it will look for a zone of weakness and the entire affected place will experience shaking.”

According to him, whether the earth rumbling can degenerate to tremor and earth quake in the future, “that is what a study of the environment will answer. At times when tremor occurred, the river may disappear. Another reason is that if there is tremor, what are the radius and the range?”

He pointed out that there is need for a comprehensive study of the area in order to ascertain what actually happened and what to do next. There is need to install seismography that will assist to know what is there. If the government   has the people at heart they should do something.

  • Earth tremor: ‘The vibrations were so intense that we thought our houses would collapse on us’

Earth tremor: ‘The vibrations were so intense that we thought our houses would collapse on us’

SUNDAY  September 11, 2016 was like any other Sundays to residents of Kwoi, headquarters of Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Those who are predominantly Christians had gone to their various churches for Sunday service.

Suddenly, around 10am, deafening sounds rent the airspace, causing serious vibrations of the earth. The incident, which was the first of its kind, threw Kwoi town into pandemonium and church services ended abruptly.

Even though, the development was proven to residents by experts to be an earth tremor and not an earthquake as earlier feared, intermittent occurrence of the incident between last Sunday and Wednesday afternoon has apparently sent fears down the spines of the people, who thought it was bigger than a tremor.

Though, damages done are mild but the people interpreted the repeated vibrations and loud sounds to a foreboding of a possible earthquake.

A Kaduna-based International Radio reporter, Suleiman Yakubu who just travelled to Kwoi on ‘Sallah’ break, told our correspondent that, the incident has forced people out of their homes.

He said: “Though people have not started fleeing the community, but as I talk to you, there is tension. Everyone is standing outside as the earth is vibrating under their feet. It started since morning and if it continues like this till evening. People will have no choice than to leave the town to safer places.” Yakubu spoke before the people actually started fleeing. Another eyewitness, Hon Badugu Nehemiah, said: “Since morning, many people in our villages have been running up and down, because both buildings and the ground have been shaking. Many churches had to cut short their Sunday service programmes because of the earthquake threat. As I am speaking with you, the ground is still shaking,” he said.

Meanwhile, as at Thursday morning, non-native residents of Kwoi had fled the communities after evacuating their property. The desperation of the non-natives to flee the town was heightened by a much smaller tremor, which was experienced in Kwoi town on Wednesday, two days after the last one, which was thought to be the last.

Sources in Kwoi said Igbo, Hausa and other non-native tribes’ shops were locked up after they had moved out with their ware and personal belongings.

It was also gathered that even those who were into other forms of employment both in the private and public sectors have fled the town.

According to a source, Jonathan Sati, a native of Jaba , “There was a small tremor on Tuesday night and another on Wednesday afternoon. The Igbo traders and other people that are not from here made up their minds to finally leave. The majority had moved out between Sunday afternoon and today (Thursday).

“On Monday, there were 26 vibrations. Those that stayed back were not sure. But now, they are leaving. I can’t remember any of them that I know who is still around. Unless non-Ham (Kwoi dialect) women who are married here.

“As for us the natives, we can’t really think of where to go now because this is our ancestral land. But, that does not mean that we are not scared. We are all living in fear, especially that the incidents are happening repeatedly,” he said. The tremor had cracked several houses and caused partial demolition of  others.

One of the victims whose houses were affected, Major General Yusuf Pyeng (rtd) said: “We are living in constant fear not knowing what will happen next. The tremor is so terrifying and we are desperate to know what is the cause and the future reaction. We are waiting for the geologists’ final report to know if we are staying or vacating the community. My house is well solidified, but because of the tremor there are cracks,” he said.

Another resident, Emmanuel Musa, told The Nation that, “we no longer sleep with our two eyes closed. We had thought that the incident will occur and just go away like that. But now, it is making us scared.

“Everyday since after the first incident, people have been leaving the town, but some of us were laughing at them then, but now, we are also scared, especially that the incident has been happening repeatedly.

“If one is inside the house and the tremor starts, you just have to come out, because the house will be shaking as if it is going to fall on you.

  • Earth tremor hits Kaduna again

Barely four months after earth tremor sacked hundreds of household in Ikara town in Kaduna State, another broad day tremor has created panic in Kwoi, Jaba local government area of the state.
The Nation gathered that the strange vibration of the earth and deafening sounds were experienced in Kwoi town from Sunday morning till about 2pm.
A Kaduna based International Radio Reporter, Suleiman Yakubu who just traveled to Kwoi on ‘Sallah’ break told our Correspondent that the incident has forced people out of their homes.
“Though people have not started fleeing the community, but as I talk to you, there is tension. Everyone is standing outside as the earth is vibrating under their feet. It started since morning and if it continues like this till evening, people will have no choice than to leave the town to safer places,” Yakubu said.
Another eyewitness, Hon Badugu Nehemiah said, “since morning, many people in our villages have been running up and down, because both buildings and the ground have been shaking. Many churches had to cut short their Sunday service programmes because of the earthquake threat. As I am speaking with you, the ground is still shaking”.
Meanwhile, the state Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has appealed for calm, saying he had already alerted appropriate authorities to investigate the incident.
He said he has directed the state emergency management agency to swing into action.
The Governor according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan said, has made a formal report to the appropriate authorities to investigate the development, report precisely on the event and issue appropriate guidance.
“The Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has confirmed that the geological and emergency agencies have been notified.
“The governor sympathises with the people in the Kwoi area over the reported earth tremors. He has directed the State Emergency management Agency (SEMA) to mobilise to the area and comfort our citizens.
“The national geological agency has also been notified, and has been invited to investigate the tremors in the Kwoi area and provide appropriate guidance.
“The Kaduna State Government is receiving updates from the area. Relevant government agencies have been directed to take steps to comfort the residents of Kwoi area and to assuage their unease as they come to terms with an unusual event.
“The Kaduna State Government wishes to appeal for calm, and urges everyone not to spread unverified information, or create panic,” the statement read.

  • Fear grips residents over Bayelsa earth tremor

Fear grips residents over Bayelsa earth tremor

Niger Delta environment is sick. The air, land and water have all been polluted. Aquatic life is disappearing. Air-borne diseases are rife and all bodies of water even the sea have been poisoned.

The widespread environmental pollution in the region is man-made, caused by years of reckless exploitation and exploration of crude oil; mindless vandalism of oil pipelines, oil wells and other installations in the name of agitation; oil theft and illegal refining of crude oil.

There is, however, a new threat to the region which has compounded the woes of the environment. It is constant occurrences of earth tremors which have raised fears of possible earthquake in the region. A team of the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) recently identified earth tremor  as another environmental challenge facing the people of the Niger Delta region.

ERA, in its report, says tremor is the latest addition to the much-talked-about pollutions occasioned by gas flaring, explosion, leaks, oil spills and threat posed by flood and coastal erosion.

In fact, there has been history of earth tremors in the region. For instance in June, 2014 ERA/FoEN reported an incident of earth tremor in Ikarama, Okordia clan, Yenagoa Local Government Area Bayelsa State. A similar incident was reported at Oboburu on 25th October, 2014 in Egiland, Rivers State.

Recently, on July 11, residents of some communities in Ahoada West, Rivers State and Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, raised the alarm over earth tremor in the areas. They said the earth quaked in the night of July 10.

The people of Akinima in Engenni clan, Ahoada West, were very disturbed. A resident and businessman, Mike Ogbakusi, whose house is located close to an oil facility belonging to Shell, said the tremor occurred in the area at about 11.15pm.

He said: “The whole place was shaking, though it didn’t last long; it just shook and everybody was shouting. The tremor even extended up to Mbiama and Igbogene, people at Igbogene in Yenagoa also noticed that there was an earth tremor.

“We don’t know the cause, but people are afraid. It has happened in the past and, I think this is about the fourth tremor we have experienced here. And Akinima community has written to the Ministry of Environment, Rivers State.

“But up till this moment nobody has come from the Ministry to ask the people what is actually happening; whether there was tremor or no tremor; nobody has come, not even Agip or Shell. So, that is the situation we are in in Akinima now; we are living in fear.”

He appealed to the government to send experts to the area to assess the development. “We are not geologists. We don’t know anything. We want experts to come and tell us what actually happened and precautionary measures to be taken.

“So that we will be guided, we don’t know when; maybe the earth will open and all of us will go in; we don’t know. We are not experts, we don’t know what is actually happening so we need experts to come and educate us on what has actually happened.

“There is a lot of exploration going on in our environment and people are shooting dynamites here and there; and we don’t know what is happening, buildings are cracking”, he said.

Ogbakusi said the quaking earth must have been caused by the seismic operations of oil companies in the area. “Whenever, they are entering the bush, they will be shooting and, running their lines.

“If you go inside our community now you will see  their seismic operation related lines running in between buildings. They explore in the day, but the tremor was experienced at night.  When we experienced the tremor; it was like something shifting; not necessarily hearing the sound of an explosive.

“But you can feel that the earth moved, shook. People ran out from their houses when it occurred; to find out what was happening. This is the fourth time such a thing is happening in this environment.

“If you go to the home of the paramount ruler, the secretary of the community will tell you the date of the letter the community wrote to the Rivers State Ministry of Environment. The other one happened about two years or one and half year ago; now this one has happened again.

“I witnessed the tremor which just occurred two days ago and the previous ones. I cannot say which company is responsible for the seismic activities going on around us presently; what I know is that this area is covered by Shell and Agip”, he said.

A female resident who introduced herself as Animasum Markalso said she experienced the tremor that occurred in community. She said: “Between 11:00pm and midnight, there was a sound and at that same moment; the building shook heavily. Although the shaking or tremor didn’t last long, there was an accompanying sound.

“I have experienced it in the past. But I was shocked by this one; I thought it was an earthquake. I even tried to run to my husband to ask him what was going on but because he just returned for the weekend and was tired I decided not to bother him. But, my mind ran amok; thinking of possible causes and also whether the world was coming to an end.

A civil servant, Nwakam Paul, said such incident has been recurring in the community. “It is about the third time since I returned from the north that I have observed it. This one was a little mild than the rest.

“It normally happen like an accident, within the twinkling of an eye it is gone. But we just noticed it; that something strange had happened.  I don’t know if we can attribute the cracking of buildings in the community to these earth tremors. The other time it happened even electric poles and wire were obviously seen shaking, moving.

“People ran to the street when it happened in the past because it was a strange phenomenon. We are neither geographers nor geologists and we have never subjected the incident to serious scrutiny and reach logical conclusions and so; even though there are exploration activities going on around us; we don’t know what to attribute the cause of the earth tremors to right now.

“We cannot say it occurs annually, maybe bi-annually. And, I didn’t hear any accompanying sound when it happened few days ago and; it happens quickly, like lightening. Within the space of one to five seconds; it is done.  I was wide awake when it happened”, he said.

Even a neighbouring community, Akinowiso, was affected. A resident of Akinowiso, Paul Peters, said: “When we experienced the movement or shaking of the earth last time; it led to cracks in my building. I managed to patch some of the cracked spots because I had little cement in the house but no money for major repairs.

“Then, with this very recent shaking of the earth again has widened the cracked sections of the building. I am confused, but I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the government to investigate the phenomenon and take appropriate steps to prevent this earth tremor from happening again.

“I am saying so because I am not the only victim; if you move around this community you will discover others who suffered the same fate; whose houses have cracked as a result of the earth tremors. And, we are afraid, not knowing what might happen the next day.

“So, the government should listen to us and take proactive steps before more damage is done.We are yet to see any government official since we are experiencing this earth tremor in our environment”.

Also a resident and indigene Delta State, Paul Harrison, said he would relocate from Akinowiso if the incident happened again.

“Well, the thing is that I am a stranger and if the earth tremor continues I can take my wife and children and relocate. Such relocation of strangers can affect the place in terms of commercial activities and development.

“I have spent about seven years in this community and this earth tremor has happened up to four times. The day it happened around 11:00pm, suddenly everywhere shook. I thought somebody was knocking on my door and, when I went out I saw people running out from their houses towards the roads.

“They later said it was a vibration from the ground; just like an earthquake, very seriously. So, we had to check around the house whether it had cracks as a result of the quake.

“But we didn’t discover any crack. The shaking happened twice and it was brief; lasted just about five seconds. We even heard a loud sound; as if someone used dynamite; very serious”, he said.

In Igbogene, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, residents also confirmed that a tremor occurred in their environment at about 11:22pm on the fateful day. A resident, Victor Idiedo, said the quake lasted for about a minute.

He said: “The first thought that came to my mind was whether armed robbers have come to invade my compound, de-roofing my building so I started shouting armed robbers, armed robbers. My elder brother who lived behind me also came out.

“When we came outside we saw people trooping out and asking ‘what is happening that the earth is moving, quaking everywhere?’ A neighbor recorded crack in his house. And, since we didn’t hear or read about the incident in any of the local media houses, I decided to reach out to Alagoa Morris of ERA/FoEN; to hint him.

“Meanwhile, I read from one of these online news on 29thJune, 2016 that about six states likely to be affected by earthquake. This raised my fears on the spur of the moment, because Bayelsa State was named among the six states.

“I was scared and, that was why I got in touch with Alagoa Morris. When I made further inquiries, I received information that some communities in Ahoada West local government area of Rivers State were also affected; even Akenfa, though mildly”.

Idiedo, however, said he had never experienced such incident at Igbogene adding that there was no explosion before the tremor. “I have lived in this community for over 10 years and this is the first time I am experiencing such a thing like this.

“There was no explosion, just that the building was shaking. I was fully awake and I have never experienced such in my life before. A minor crack occurred as a direct result of the earth tremor in the neighbourhood.

Plates and other things in my cousin’s house fell down from where they were kept as a result of the quake. Some of the breakable ones got broken”, he said.

Another resident of Igbogene, Chief Etekpe Friday said: “We were about going to bed when I heard a very high vibration. My window shook heavily; even the ground vibrated. I thought immediately of what the cause could possibly be; thinking if rodents around could be responsible. I had to resort to prayers. So, I had the vibration experienced in my house”.

ERA in the report compiled by its Bayelsa State Coordinator, Mr. Alagoa Morris, said a renewed search for oil could have been responsible for the earth tremor.

The report said: “ERA.FoEN is very much aware of renewed and heightened search for oil and gas within this environment; in Yenagoa and Ogbia local government areas of Bayelsa State and beyond; even as attested by one of those who spoke to ERA at Akinima.

“This has been on for about three months or more now. It is also a common knowledge that explosives are often used during these seismic operations. When a similar incident happened at Ikarama community in June, 2014; it attracted the attention of the Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment.

“What is not clear is whether anything significant was made beyond the visit of officials of the Ministry then. Ordinarily, not just for the records; experts would have been invited to investigate and come up with reports for stakeholders to know what the prognosis is and allay the fears and concerns of the people/communities.Currently, the people in affected communities are apprehensive”.

Therefore, ERA asked the three tiers of government to should rise up to the occasion and take appropriate steps to identify what actually happened and why.

It appealed to the relevant agencies of Federal Government, including the Science Ministry, Environment, NDDC and Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to get experts who will work effectively with the State governments, Local governments and communities affected to unravel the mystery around earth tremors in our communities.

It said such studies should provide practical solutions to the problem, allay the fears and concerns of the affected communities and take take steps to prevent real earthquake from happening.

The report said: “All stakeholders, including the media should follow up on this with a view to halting whatever danger that is on its way.

“Communities should be more alert, document and keep accurate records of happenings around them. They should also report such strange occurrences to relevant NGOs, media and the government”.
