    Enugu: Police assure schools of adequate security

    The Police Command in Enugu State says it will continue to provide adequate security to schools in the state  for the pupils and students to have conducive learning environment.

    The command’s spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said this in Enugu on Tuesday that the police had put the necessary measures in place for better security services to schools in Enugu.

    Amarizu said that providing security to schools irrespective of their locations in the state was very important, adding that it would make the pupils and students to focus more on their learning activities rather than living in fear.

    He said with the continued security, there would be no need for parents of the students to worry about the safety of their children, noting that this would make parents to have relaxed minds whenever their children were at school.

    According to him, without security in a state, people will always live in fear and teaching and learning cannot go on normally.

    The spokesman said that the police have strong partners with other security agencies so as to work together for the purpose of maintaining peace in the state.

    “We are in strong partnership with other security agencies and the neighborhood association in the communities in the state because the peace of the state must be maintained for people to continue to enjoy their stay and as well continue to sleep with their two eyes closed,” he said.

    Amaraizu urged all the schools in the state to always partner with the police for a safe and secure environment.

    He advised he students to be law abiding at all times as well as report any criminal cases around them to the police for necessary actions.

     

  • Two arrested for abduction in Enugu

    The Enugu State Police Command has arrested two members of a vigilance group in Nimbo, Uzo Uwani local government area of the state, for alleged kidnap of one Enechi Ejiofor in December last year.

    The command’s spokesperson, Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this to journalists in Enugu on Thursday.

    Amaraizu said the suspects abducted Ejiofor, a Special Assistant on Security Matters to Uzo Uwani local government area chairman, in December on his way to an official assignment at Ugwuiyi Ekoro.

    He said the kidnappers on December 14, 2016 demanded N10 million ransom from the family but later reduced it to N2 million which one of the suspects collected.

    Amaraizu said the two suspects were helping policemen in their investigations.

    He said the first suspects revealed that they allegedly collaborated with the community vigilance group to kidnap the victim.

    The police spokesman said the first suspect, who claimed to be a Nollywood actor, said he played a big role in monitoring the victim’s movement because he knows him very well.

  • Nine injured in Enugu auto crash

    The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed that nine people are in critical condition in two hospitals in Nsukka, after an auto crash on Sunday.

    The command’s spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday that the hospitals treating the victims were Enechi Hospital Ukehe-Nsukka and Bishop Shanaham Hospital, Nsukka, Enugu State.

    Amaraizu said the accident occurred at about 5:00 p.m. on Enugu-Makurdi expressway at Umuoka in Udi local government area of the state.

    The spokesman said there was a collusion between a Toyota Hiace bus ENU 681 XA  and a Toyota Carina car CG 25 ENU.

    “It was further gathered that following the collision, no at least nine persons comprising the drivers and the conductor of the Hiace bus with other occupants were critically injured.

    “However, the police patrol team on the road was on hand to evacuate the injured victims on time to Enechi Hospital, Ukehe-Nsukka and Bishop Shanaham Hospital, Nsukka, for medical attention and also clearance of obstructions to avoid further incident,’’ he said.

  • Update: Two killed, mosque burnt in Fulani, Igbo clash

    Two persons were killed during a bloody clash between Igbo and Fulani people at Gariki Market, Enugu, on Wednesday.

    The deceased persons were identified as one Ali, a Fulani and Ifeanyi Ifeacho, an Igbo.

    The incident happened very late on Wednesday evening.

    According to an eyewitness, trouble started when Ali came from New Artisan Market with a cow to slaughter in the Gariki abattoir.

    Ali came to Gariki abattoir where Ifeanyi worked as attendant to slaughter his cow, following the closure of New Artisan Market by the state government early this week.

    The eyewitness said when Ali finished slaughtering his cow, he gave Ifeanyi N400 instead of the N500 fee for slaughtering a cow in the abattoir.

    Ifeanyi was said to have asked Ali to give him the remaining N100 but the Fulani man remained adamant, insisting that he would not pay any other money.

    The misunderstanding degenerated to a fight between the two.

    In the ensuing melee, Ali pulled out a dagger and stabbed Ifeanyi severally on the stomach.

    Ifeanyi slumped on the ground and died on the spot.

    Ali attempted to escape from the market but some outraged Igbo traders grabbed him and killed him in turn.

    The angry Igbo traders mobilized and burnt down the mosque inside Gariki market.

    However, normalcy has returned to the market, following the deployment of anti-riot policemen to the market and environs.

    The Spokesman for Enugu State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident.

    Amaraizu, a Superintendent of Police, said the command deployed anti-riot policemen to Gariki market immediately to stop the situation from escalating.

    “Two persons were confirmed dead during a clash between an Easterner and a Northerner over an alleged misunderstanding that arose between them in the evening at Gariki Awkunanaw Market.

    “Security has been beefed up in the area by Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Douglas Agbonleni, to avoid escalation and breakdown of law and order, just as a full scale investigation has commenced into the incident,” the police spokesman said.

     

  • Two killed in Enugu fracas

    The Enugu State police command on Thursday confirmed two persons died in a fracas at the Gariki Market in Awkunanaw, Enugu.

    The command’s Police Public Relations of Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident, said the fracas broke out late on Wednesday.

    He said one of the dead men had during a quarrel stabbed the other to death, prompting a mob to descend on him.

    Amaraizu said the person who was severely beaten by the mob later died in hospital.

    “Two persons were confirmed dead on Wednesday during a clash at Gariki Awkunanaw Market,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the police spokesman as saying on the matter.

    “Security has been beefed up in the area to avoid escalation of the fracas and to check breakdown of law and order in the market.

    “Investigations have commenced into the incident to unravel what really happened and those behind it.”

     

  • Police arrest 13 IPOB members in Enugu

    At least 13 suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were on Monday arrested by police for alleged unlawful protest in Enugu.

    The spokesman of the state police command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the suspects were arrested on Obiagu Road in the Coal City, while commemorating `Biafran fallen heroes and heroines of the 1967 -1970 civil war.

    He said they were apprehended with flags of Biafra.

    Amaraizu said the command had embarked on a surveillance of the state following reports of planned protests.

  • Police nab armed robbery, kidnapping suspect in Enugu

    The police in the Nsukka Division of Enugu State Command said on Friday they arrested a suspected armed robber and kidnapper who had for long been on the wanted list.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu that the suspect was arrested on Monday following his nefarious activities in Nsukka and its environs.

    He said the suspect hailed from Odolu in Kogi and had been on police wanted list.

    The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abubakar Mohammed, said he was determined to sanitise and rid the state of criminal activities.

    Mohammed called on the people to cooperate with the police to ensure that criminal elements were flushed out.
