Ebonyi PDP zonal vice chairman, dumps party for ADC with supporters

Former zonal vice chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Ebonyi Central Zone, Mr. Kevin Chukwu, has formally resigned from the party and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside more than 10,000 supporters drawn from various political parties.

The defection ceremony, held in his Enyimba Agalegu community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, attracted party stakeholders, loyalists, and residents from surrounding communities.

Addressing supporters, Chukwu disclosed that he officially submitted his resignation from the PDP on January 8 to his ward chairman, who acknowledged receipt.

He said the decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents and growing dissatisfaction with the political direction of major parties.

“Politics is local. You cannot play politics away from your locality,” he said. “The position I was in politically was affecting my people, and when I returned home, they made it clear that it was not in their best interest.”

Chukwu explained that his move to the ADC was influenced not only by the wishes of his people but also by what he described as a broader national political shift. He noted that several prominent political figures across the country had also defected to the party in pursuit of a better future for Nigeria.

According to him, Nigerians are increasingly frustrated with unfulfilled political promises and are now demanding a new direction anchored on credible leadership and measurable development.

“We are tired of getting promises here and there. We now want to elect leaders who will do the right thing and move Nigeria forward,” he declared.

Chukwu said he was yet to decide whether he would contest any political position in the 2027 general elections, stressing that his immediate focus was on reorganizing his political base and strengthening the ADC in the area.

“The most important thing now is to organize my political life… With ADC, I believe I will be able to shape my political future, either to contest or support others,” he noted.

He described the turnout at the event as overwhelming, claiming that more than 10,000 supporters had joined him in the defection, adding that many of them mobilized themselves without financial inducement.

Chukwu urged Nigerians, particularly his constituents, to embrace what he described as a “new political circle” and align with parties they believe hold the future of the country.

Welcoming the new members, the Ebonyi state chairman of ADC, Jennifer Adibe, expressed excitement over the influx of new members led by Kelvin Chukwu.

She said the decision of the defectors to join ADC followed a careful review of the party’s manifesto and ideology.

“I am very, very happy to receive members from PDP, Labour Party, and other parties led by Chief Kelvin Chukwu,” Adibe said. “After looking at our manifesto, they agreed that this is the right place to be.”

According to her, all the executive members of the PDP from the defectors’ bloc have formally joined ADC, stressing that the party is committed to integrating them fully into its existing structure.

“This is a coalition, and we must work together. We will harmonize interests and ensure that everyone is carried along. ADC is accommodating, as symbolized by our handshake logo”, she said.

Adibe contrasted the emerging coalition with past political alliances that failed to meet public expectations, insisting that the ADC-led coalition is different because of the quality of leaders involved and their shared commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.

“This coalition has the interest of Nigerians at heart. It is not like the ones we have seen in the past. You will see the difference when we begin to win elections,” she said.

Addressing concerns about managing diverse interests within the growing coalition, the ADC chairman emphasized harmonization rather than exclusion, adding that the party would avoid domination by any single group.

“We will not have parallel structures or parallel governments. When people are accommodated, there will be unity,” she stated.

The event ended with the formal presentation of ADC membership cards to the new entrants.

The defection is seen as a significant boost for the ADC in Ebonyi State, as it continues to expand its influence ahead of the 2027 elections.

JUST IN: PDP replaces Odefa, nominates new Southeast national vice chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has nominated the zonal youth leader of the party, Chidiebere Egwu, as the replacement for the expelled former southeast national vice chairman, Ali Odefa.

The party stated this in a letter addressed to the acting national chairman, Alhaji Illiya Damagun, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

It based the nomination of Mr. Egwu on the expulsion of Mr. Ali Odefa due to alleged anti-party activities.

Recall that a Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki upheld the initial suspension of Mr. Odefa by the ward executives of PDP Oguduokwor Ward in Onicha LGA.

Consequent to his earlier suspension, the Oguduokwor Ward Disciplinary Committee, after hearing the allegations levelled against Mr. Odefa, recommended the expulsion of the former Zonal Chairman.

Subsequently, on 12th December 2024, the Executives of PDP Oguduokwor Ward announced the summary expulsion of Mr. Odefa.

  • Ebonyi PDP caretaker committee members, stakeholders walk out of reconciliation meeting

Ebonyi PDP caretaker committee members, stakeholders walk out of reconciliation meeting

The crisis rocking the Ebonyi chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worsened at the weekend as a reconciliation meeting called by the Caretaker Chairman of the party, Steve Oruruo allegedly ended in a fiasco.

It was gathered that about nine committee members of the party and other stakeholders in attendance walked out of the chairman and the national vice chairman southeast of the party, Ali Odefa, who is also from the state.

Shortly after the meeting, Oruruo claimed that he had reconciled the warring factions of the party in the state but other members of the committee quickly disowned his claims.

Pascal Ukwuani, secretary of the caretaker committee in a statement on Monday described the statement by Barrister Oruruo as misleading and false.

According to him, the said meeting of the Ebonyi PDP held in Enugu on Sunday premise upon which Oruruo is claiming to have united the different interests in the party didn’t achieve any result as members in attendance staged a walkout, leaving behind only Oruruo, Ali Odefa and their security guards in the hall.

He further noted that the meeting which took place in Enugu by 2 pm ended in a fiasco as has been the usual practice since the inauguration of Oruruo as chairman.

He said: “Of the thirteen total number of the caretaker committee members, nine walked out on the meeting to communicate their displeasure over the manner the chairman was handling the issues bothering on settlement of the crisis ravaging the party, part of which he, the chairman engineered within the few days he has assumed office as chairman of the party.

“Yes, there was a meeting, but it ended worse than the reason it was convened. Rushing to the press to report the opposite of what transpired is one of the pitfalls of the leadership of the party by Mr Oruruo.”

”It is important at this point to let the national working committee and the entire public know that Steve Oruruo is using propaganda to communicate the affairs of our party in Ebonyi to the public.

“In clear terms, nothing reasonable was discussed as the Chairman and Ali Odefa besieged the venue with over 70 police officers and DSS, denying the secretary and the other nine members the opportunities to contribute to discussions about the repositioning of the party.

“This denial was the last straw that broke the camel’s back, leading to the abrupt dismissal of the meeting. We are surprised reading from media platforms hours after where the chairman, Oruruo claimed to have settled the scores within the party during the meeting.

“As members of the caretaker committee dedicated to seeing the repositioning of the party, we’re disappointed in the ways and manner a supposed chairman goes on with the business of ensuring that the party is brought back to stability in the state, using propaganda to communicate the business of the party instead of undertaking the true task of reconciling the aggrieved members which is what he was brought in to pursue.”

The Secretary said that Oruruo has successfully exacerbated the woes of the party and is expedient in injuring the party more.

“He is ruling the party in the style of sole administration where he acts as chairman, secretary, publicity secretary and more, not allowing anyone else to participate in the process of communication to find the root cause of the discord that befell the party.

“If the national leadership of the party fails to wade into the menacing Oruruo factor in the Ebonyi PDP, it’ll not be in doubt that our party in Ebonyi is headed towards absolute precipice. He should be reminded that propaganda isn’t germane when trying to pursue reconciliation assuming he’s even attempting to reconcile anybody as he has claimed.”, he said.

Mass exodus hits Ebonyi PDP as Deputy Speaker, others resigns

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Ebonyi State chapter has continued to suffer more massive defection of major stakeholders with the immediate former Speaker Odefa Obasi Odefa the latest to jump ship.

Odefa with other stakeholders from his Onicha East constituency resigned their membership of the party.

Odefa tendered his resignation letter to the Chairman of his Ogudu Okwor Ward, Oshiri community in the local government.

On Wednesday he confirmed his defection to journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital.

He was flanked by other bigwigs of PDP and Labour Party(LP) in the local government who all announced their resignation of the membership of their political parties.

They include: PDP Chairman of Ugwu Oshiri Ward, PDP Chairman of Okpuzor/ Ukawu Ward, PDP Chairman Ebyia Oshiri Ward, PDP Chairman Abaomege Ward, PDP Chairman Ishinkwo/Ukawu Ward, PDP Chairman Ogudu Okwor Ward Oshiri, Odefa Ogbu Odefa Coordinator of Chukwuma Odii campaign organization in Onicha local government area, former Labour Party Chairman of Onicha local government, Hon. Odefa’s resignation letter reads: “After a robust discussion with my family and associates, I have decided to resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP).

“In considering the decision, I am satisfied that I have given my best to the party and as well thank the party for the chance to serve while I was in the party. I wish you well and thank you so much”.

He noted that on Monday this week, all the ward executives of PDP in Onicha local government and Onicha East state constituency where he represented in the House of Assembly for third term resigned en mass.

“The implication of that is that there is nothing like PDP executives or functional executives in the entire Onicha East which comprises of Oshiri, Ukawu, Abaomege and Ishinkwo communities,” he stated.

Odefa and the PDP/LP bigwigs di not disclose the party they will be joining but it was gathered that they will likely join the ruling All Progressive Congress(APC).

Odefa, whose younger brother is the National Vice Chairman of PDP, South East, said the National Vice Chairman was free to remain in PDP.

“Yes, my younger brother is a major stakeholder, not just a major stakeholder. He is the National Vice Chairman of PDP all over south east. But in our family, we are very mature people. We may have different opinions and we respect each others opinions and feelings.

“People in the same family, even people from the same mother and father can be in different parties, politics is different from family. When it comes to politics, we we do politics, when it comes to family, we do family.

“We are all old and matured, none of us is less than 50 years, all of us are all grown up and married with children. So, we have no problem with that at all,” he said.

  • Bomb found in Ebonyi PDP secretariat

An object suspected to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat on the Abakaliki/Enugu Expressway, Ebonyi State.

Following this, Governor David Umahi yesterday convened an emergency security meeting.

Umahi, who addressed reporters after the meeting, was shocked at the discovery and accused the opposition party of being desperate to seize power at all cost.

According to him, security briefs from the Commissioner of Police and other security chiefs pointed to desperation of some persons in the opposition party.

He said: “The police discovered a bomb in our secretariat and from all accounts, the IED was a little bit old, showing that it must have been planted on a day I went for a meeting in the secretariat. We thank God the bomb did not explode.

“Our suspects are the desperate opposition who have become jobless and aggressive ahead of the 2019 elections because they think they can seize power by all means. I have directed the security chiefs to investigate the incident and report to their various headquarters while we, as government, will report to Mr President.

  • Ebonyi PDP stakeholders reject delegates’ list

Ebonyi PDP stakeholders reject delegates’ list

THE Committee of Elders and major stakeholders of the Ebonyi State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lodged a petition yesterday with the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

In the petition, the group urged the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu and its national leadership to urgently intervene in the crisis, which engulfed the party after its ward and local government congresses.

The group alleged that an electoral panel sent to the state by the PDP national secretariat “concocted fake summary result”, urging the party’s leaders in Abuja to reject the delegates’ list.

It was led by Senator Ayim Ude; the Convener the Ebonyi PDP Elders Committee, Chief Okeagu Ogada; Senator Chris Nwankwo (Enonyi North); Senator Sonny Ogbuoji (Ebonyi South);  Senator Azu Agboti; Senator Emmanuel Onwe; and former deputy governor, Prof. Chigozie Ogbu.

Others were Tobias Okwuru; Peter Oge Ali; former Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly Augustine Nwankwegu; member, PDP board of trustees, Mrs. Patience Ogodo; 12 local government chairmen; party’s chairmen and other leaders.

Ude, who spoke to reporters shortly after a meeting with Mu’azu and other party leaders, insisted that the adoption of the former Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, was done with the consent of the PDP stakeholders in the state.

He lamented that “there appears to be a grand plan to push the mainstream members of the PDP out of the umbrella.”

In the petition, which was signed by 104 leaders of the party, the group said it was worried by the aggressive manner by which the Ebonyi PDP was being vilified.

The delegation presented a seven-point demand to ensure speedy resolution of the impasse ahead of the 2015 elections.

They alleged that the panel sent by the PDP national headquarters to conduct the state’s ward delegate election did not submit the authentic results to Mu’azu.

“The electoral panel concocted fake summary result, which has absolutely no relationship with the genuine outcome of the congress election in Ebonyi State and submitted at the national secretariat of the PDP,” the stakeholders said.

According to Ude, the local government congress, which ought to have taken place on November 8, did not hold in Ebonyi State.

  • Ex-minister, SSG, commissioner make Ebonyi PDP delegates’ list

The crisis in the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worsened at the weekend, as a faction claimed it conducted the local government congress.

The Chairman, Ben Akpa, claimed that there was no congress, as the committee sent by the national secretariat refused to conduct the congress.

He said: “They (the committee) insisted that they wanted to use the list of returning officers, signed by the deputy chairman, instead of the one submitted by the state working committee and the substantive chairman. So, we argued it and they insisted that unless they were allowed to use the deputy chairman’s list, the elections would not hold.

“He (committee chairman) also said he got a call that unless he used the list from Abuja, he was not to conduct the election. After saying that he got up and left.”

But the Acting Chairman Onwe Joseph Onwe-led faction claimed it conducted the congress.

It said the former Minister of Culture and Tourism, Amb. Frank Ogbuewu, Senator Nguji Ngele, a former commissioner in Martin Elechi’s administration, Dr. Norah Aloh and 10 others emerged as elected national delegates for the national congress.

The faction said 513 ward delegates emerged through the congresses conducted on November 1.

Others on the faction’s national delegates lists included Sunday Igwewa, Chief Tony Abel, Chief Chukwuma Igwe, Emmanuel Mbaechina, Bonny Ofoke, Prof. Ozo Nwke Ozo, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

Onwe said despite the ploy by some elements to cause disaffection, the exercise went peacefully because of the maturity and disposition of the people to democratic tenets.

A section of the PDP in the state expressed reservations about the conduct of the elections. Onwe said the elected delegates at the three-man ad hoc ward congresses and the national delegates were men and women of proven integrity.

He said the party had no doubt that the delegates would represent the party well, having occupied positions of authority at the state and national levels.

Onwe thanked the National Working Committee and the panels, which conducted the exercise, for their patience and dexterity.

“We hail the dexterity shown by the panels sent to Ebonyi State to conduct the congresses, particularly the Chairman of the National Delegate Congress Committee, Dr. Willy Ogbeide and the members,” he said.

  • 500 protest killing of youth in Ebonyi PDP primaries

No fewer than 500 indigenes of Ekoli Edda, Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi, yesterday, protested the alleged killing of a youth, Kalu Ogbu, during the just concluded Peoples

Democratic Party, PDP, councillorship primaries in the state.

The protesters who were majorly aged women and men, were seen outside the state police headquarters carrying placards.

Some of them read: “Police stop covering the truth”, “Punish Stanley and Etta for killing Kalu Ogbu”, “Let the truth prevail, arrest the killers now – Stanley”, “Stanley should be held responsible”, “Murder is crime, police should arrest Stanley”, “killer shouldn’t be given opportunities to head and rule”, “Stop playing politics with the life of our people”, among others.

The victim who hails from Amaeke Ward1 was killed on July22nd, as he came out to be part of the councillorship election in Ekoli Edda.

The protesters who cried out for justice, alleged that one Stanley was the person who killed Mr. Kalu Ogbu during the PDP councillorship primaries. They also accused the police of arresting innocent persons who had nothing to do with the ugly incident.

But the Command spokesman, DSP Sylvester Igbo, charged the people to desist from making statements they could not substantiate.

He said the police arrested and released the alleged suspect because nobody from the community came to the police station to indict him (suspect).

“It is not good for people to make a statement which they cannot prove. Somebody was shot at the venue of the PDP primaries, but nobody came to tell the police that the person arrested was the person who committed the crime.

“ We are still investigating the matter and as we get overwhelming evidence on the suspect, we can agree with them.”

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mrs. Ugo Nnachi and Nze Nnachi Nkamaiye called on the police to make effort and arrest the alleged suspect to avoid crisis in Ekoli Edda community.

“The brother of the victim took the lifeless body of his brother to their compound and later retrieved it because some stakeholders decided to offer him N2 million naira and also make him the next councillor of his ward,” she further alleged.
