Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi has inaugurated 13 bulldozers procured by the caretaker chairmen of the 13 local government areas of the state for rice production and road construction.

The governor expressed joy at the development, thanking God for his  administration’s success so far.

He said when he took office, his administration bought similar equipment worth about N1.8 billion for similar purposes.

Umahi said it was a joint agreement between the state and local governments that every local council has one grader and a bulldozer in order to have access roads and also to prepare their farms for rice production.

He added that every council had already got one caterpillar.

He urged the council bosses to deploy the equipment to work and ensure that they generated employment through the programme.

“You should be able to train civil servants. Each of the bulldozers and graders should be able to have three trainees each attached to whoever that is going to be the operator,”he added.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Local GovernmentS and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Samuel Okoronkwo, a lawyer, explained that the 13 bulldozers cost N442 million and 40% out of the total cost has been paid while the remaining 60% would be paid in installments within six months.

Ebonyi confirms second Lassa fever death

The Ebonyi government has announced the second death from Lassa fever in the state.

The Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Daniel Umezurike, told newsmen in Abakaliki on Monday that the disease claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy.

He said that the deceased died at the weekend after being discharged from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

“The incident is unfortunate. The deceased was a pupil of one of the primary schools in Igbeagu, Izzi Local Government Area.

“The bereaved parents are based in Abuja but the report we have did not indicate that he travelled to meet his parents recently,” he said.

The commissioner noted that the deceased was not taken to the hospital immediately he fell sick, which made his condition critical.

“He, however, responded to treatment in the hospital which made the authorities to discharge him, but he unfortunately died the day he was discharged.

“The hospital certified him fit after treatment but before he was discharged, we had already taken his test sample to the relevant quarters where the result read positive,” he said.

He noted that the ministry had embarked on surveillance and contact-tracing of close associates to curtail its spread.

“We have also intensified our enlightenment campaign among the citizens on ways to prevent the disease and immediate report of suspected cases to relevant authorities,” he said.

The first casualty of the disease in the state was a student of the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, who died in January.

    Policeman hospitalised in Ebonyi

A policeman attached to the Ebonyi State Police Command is receiving treatment at the Mater Misericaordea Hospital, Afikpo, following injuries he sustained when his team went to make an arrest at Amasiri in Afikpo North Local Government Area.

Police spokesman George Okafor confirmed the incident. He said Ikiri Okugo had been arrested for the attack.

According to him, the office received a distress call on a clash between two rival groups and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was instructed to investigate the matter as the members had escaped before policemen got to the scene.

Okafor said the groups clashed at a bar owned by Mrs. Esther. “They destroyed her property and escaped before policemen arrived. The team then visited the monarch, who took them to the home of the main suspect, Okugo.

“Okugo opened the door and hit the officer who knocked with a machete, giving him deep cuts in the process. But others arrested and took him to the station.”

Okafor, however, did not confirm any dead.

“We cannot establish any case of death because we did not see any body,” he said.

The spokesman said the matter would be reported at the headquarters in Abakaliki for investigation, adding that the wounded officer is responding to treatment.

Executive Chairman, Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board, (EBSUBEB), Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, who disclosed this in Abakaliki, the state capital, while distributing over 100,000 education materials  worth millions of naira to Junior Secondary School pupils in the state, attributed the payment to the priority Governor Dave Umahi places on education.

He reiterated the Board’s resolve  to run with the Governor’s vision of improving access to education for Ebonyi children.

Flagging off the distribution, the wife of the governor, Mrs Rachel Umahi said the gesture was part of government’s policy to improve the quality of education in the state.

  • Scores injured in Ebonyi rice millers clash

Scores injured in Ebonyi rice millers clash

The leadership tussle rocking the Abakaliki Rice Milling Company got messier at the weekend as rival factions clashed in Ebonyi, the state capital.

Factional Chairman  Chukwuemeka Nwankashi got machete cuts on his head and has since been hospitalised, following parallel elections, which produced factional executives.

It was gathered that a faction supported by the government held its election at the Abakaliki Township Stadium and former chairman Joseph Ununu was re-elected.

The second faction held its election at the mill’s hall and Nwankashi was elected as its chairman.

Speaking to The Nation, Nwankashi accused Ununu of causing the fracas. He alleged that Ununu’s faction, armed with weapons, and on Ununu’s orders, attacked him and his supporters as they celebrated his victory.

His words: “We planned to have our elections but government interfered with it. This is contrary to our constitution because only registered members are allowed to vote during elections.

“We begged to be allowed to hold the election at our hall but the government insisted it must hold at the stadium, and we agreed. But when we got to the stadium at 8am, we discovered they had brought in hoodlums to take over the place. We told them those people were not our authentic members but they did not listen, so we left.

“The authentic members then went to the mill and held our election but before that, we stopped at the Government House to intimate them of happenings. I won the election with 158 votes, as I was unopposed. Other officers were also elected: Elias Nwogwu (treasurer), Chijioke Ilodiba (vice chairman) and Emeka Agu Ozo (financial secretary).

“We were celebrating the victory when the former chairman, Joseph Ununu a.k.a Zuma, came with armed thugs and attacked us. I sustained injuries on my head and face. Many others were also injured and if not for the intervention of the police, we would have been killed.

“Ununu even boasted that he had government’s backing to eliminate anyone opposing him.”

Nwankashi called on the government to intervene, adding that “even if they want a particular candidate, they should tell us. We only want the proper thing to be done”.

But Ununu denied ordering the attack. He maintained that he was duly elected.

The government, through the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural resources, Uchenna Orji, has said the state will only recognise the election which produced Ununu.

According to him, the government had done all it could to ensure peace but its efforts were frustrated by selfish individuals.

“The government, therefore, constituted a committee, headed by myself, with other commissioners as members, and we fixed February 12 for the election, to hold at the Abakaliki Township stadium, which all the aspirants accepted.

“All 13 aspirants were screened and at the end, we adopted the option A4 system, with the delegates raising their hands to be counted.

“Ununu emerged as chairman and there was nothing like a parallel election, because the one which produced him was conducted in the presence of security officials and accredited election observers.

“The purported parallel election was conducted by cartels who are produce merchants; they connive with rice vendors to brand the rice as belonging to other states.

“Their acts give the false impression that Ebonyi rice is produced by other states, but we urge the rice millers and the public to conduct their businesses without fear of molestation,” Orji said.

    SGF inaugurates projects in Ebonyi

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal has inaugurated some projects executed by Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi.

Lawal, who was on a one-day visit to the state, was so impressed with the Umahi progress story that he joked saying he was surprised people like the governor were in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said Umahi’s achievement was a challenge to all governors, including those of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said he would recommend Umahi’s ‘pragmatic type of governance’ to President Muhammadu Buhari, since according to him, it should be  a model for other governors to emulate.

The SGF said, “Governor David Umahi has performed more than what we see others do in the last six months.  I will tell Mr. President that this state is a model of development for our country.”

Turning to the   governor, he jokingly added, ”Sometimes, we get surprised that people like you are found in the PDP but there is a cliche that says good men are found everywhere.

“We like such people but we will not envy them if they remain in PDP because they also challenge APC governors to perform. That is the essence of opposition and competition in politics.”

The SGF   applauded the prudence and integrity with which Umahi was managing the lean resources available to the state.‘

Lawal,  who appealed to all Ebonyians, members of the State House of Assembly and the Executive  to continue to cooperate with the  governor to enable him do more, stated  that “with the governor’s performances so far, he will win his election for a second term if in the APC.”   The SGF had inspected some projects in Abakaliki, including flyovers under construction and inaugurated the CBN Road in the Centenary city.

At one of the sites, Lawal, who was in company with the Ministers of State for Niger Delta and Labour and Productivity, Bar. James Ochili and Dr. Cladius Daramola, observed that the cost of the three flyovers  was an  indication  that “the governor belongs to a cream of leaders in the country who are not greedy and corrupt.”

Lawal, who was honoured with a Chieftaincy of ENYIOMA of Ebonyi State by the state Traditional Rulers Council, noted that his visit to the state was not for politics, but as a functionary of the Federal Government.

He assured that he would assist in facilitating the Federal Government’s refund to the state of the over N10bn spent on the construction of federal roads in the state.

Speaking at a state Banquet, Umahi said   the appointment of   Lawal as SGF was an act of God.

Ebonyi records first Avian Influenza case

Ebonyi has recorded its first case of Avian Influenza infection, as confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Uchenna Orji.

Orji confirmed the virus’s detection on Sunday while interacting with newsmen who visited the affected poultry farm at Ugwuachara area of Abakaliki.

According to him, the attention of his ministry was drawn to the development, following massive death of birds at the farm.

“Officials of the state veterinary services took the sample of a bird’s carcass to a research institute in Jos, where it was confirmed that the birds died from the H5NI strains of the Avian Influenza.

“I have directed the veterinary department of the ministry to isolate the farm and take inventory of all poultry and ancillary farms in the state.

“We will also ensure sustained enlightenment on the influenza to educate the public on precautionary measures to take ,” he said.

Reacting, the Director of Veterinary Services and Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr Ibiam Okoro, said that efforts had been intensified to contain the possible spread of the virus.

“The strain detected in the farm was only transmissible from animal to animal. Poultry farmers and the people are warned against the sale or consumption of sick or dead chicken,” he said.

The Avian Influenza Control Project Desk Officer in the state, Dr Rita Okoro, said that the alarm raised by the affected farm owner, helped in checking the spread of the virus to other farms in the state.

One of the Supervisors of the farm, Miss Victoria Chukwu, told newsmen that the sudden-massive death of the birds aroused suspicion as they failed to respond to all treatment given to them.

“Fellow poultry farmers should exercise caution while the people should ensure that chicken and other poultry products are properly cooked before consumption,” she advised.

  • Ebonyi community revives dying tradition

    Ebonyi community revives dying tradition

The Ezza Community in Ebonyi State has revived a circumcision custom through which men and women were welcomed into adulthood. It was last celebrated 20 years ago. JOSEPH JIBUEZE reports.

In the yesteryear, adult circumcision was a practice every household in Ezza Community of Ebonyi State was proud to participate in. It was somewhat a status symbol for whoever had gone through the initiation rites. It also makes he that had been initiated be regarded as a fulfilled man. Contrarily, those unable to perform the rite were seen as efulefu (good-for-nothing or layabout). That was when men were said to be men.

Every family endeavours to ensure that every of its male child underwent the initiation.

Unfortunately, this tradition was abandoned owing to misconceptions that it is not in conformity with Christianity and modernism as the last ceremony took place 20 years ago.

However, 20 years after the last adult was “circumcised”, the Ishinkwo Community in Ebonyi State has revived the dying custom.

It held the traditional circumcision for its men (ibiugwu in Ezza dialect), which is a ceremony marking the transition of the persons observing it from youth to adulthood.

It is the beginning of independence from parental restrictions and accommodation, and indicates that a man is ripe to live in his own home, take a wife or wives and have a family.

In traditional Ezza society, boys and girls of marriage age were not permitted to marry until they had gone through the ceremony.

It used to be a thing of pride for one to go through the initiation when one’s parents were still alive.

The celebrator was to do no work during the month-long event, but stay indoors and eat sumptuous meals, especially pounded yam with egusi soup washed down with fresh palm wine.

The man is usually dressed in a wrapper, bowler hat with beads and neck chain (iyagba) to match, accompanied by a chaperon. The celebrator entertains his numerous visitors and well-wishers with a local guitar (ibekwe).

As a new warrior in town, the man also needs a gun as a symbol of his readiness to defend his household and the community against external aggression or threat from enemies.

The event then ends with the celebrators making public appearance at the Eke Market Square, with spectators admiring and appreciating them with gifts. Elders prayed for and blessed them and their future.

However, the custom was abandoned for years and subsequently went into oblivion.

President, Ishinkwo Youth Assembly (IYA), Mr Innocent Elum, a graduate in law, said the custom suffered due to ignorance, Christianity and modernism.

He said some Christians misconceived the custom, which is a significant part of the established way of life of the Ezza Ezekuna people of Ebonyi State, as being devilish, which he said is not the case.

The custom was held over 20 years ago, long before most of the youth who witnessed the event held in November last year in Ishinkwo, were born.

It is usually an opportunity for merriment and for families and parents to rejoice at their children’s attainment of manhood or womanhood.

For most of the adults, the event brought back fond memories of a joyous occasion which, once upon a time, everyone looked forward to with eagerness.

A woman is allowed to participate as long as she is of marriage age. In the past, it was mandatory for a man or woman who intends to get married to undergo the circumcision.

“There was jubilation in the community when the ceremony was held. You needed to see the smiles on several faces, especially the older generation. We should not let our culture die,” Elum said.

The event is usually held every November, and has the potential of being included in the tourism calendar if well harnessed.

There is no special requirement for those who wish to get “circumcised”. No monetary demands are made. All the person needs is to buy the needed materials for the ceremony, including a gun, which symbolises strength.

“The yearning of Ishinkwo youth to revive the custom became deafening and I offered to provide leadership, participating fully in the event. We were three in number. But indications are that we may record more than 20 people this year.

“I call on the Federal and the Ebonyi State Governments should  pay serious attention to customs and ceremonies that are not repugnant to justice, equity and good conscience. For where there is no culture, there can’t be taboos and nothing can be held sacred. In such society anything goes and nihilism is a way of life,” Elum said.

Gunmen on Wednesday shot a businessman to death in Amasiri, Afikpo North local government area of Ebonyi State.

The hoodlums numbering four had robbed a warehouse in the neighborhood before proceeding to the shop of the businessman to shoot him.

The businessman was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

An eyewitness, Amadi Clement said the hoodlums shot sporadically to scare people away before they proceeded with their robbery operation.

“When Afikpo Divisional Police command was contacted, a team of policemen stormed the area but the robbers had shot someone and robbed the warehouse before the arrival of the policemen”, he added.

Spokesman of the Police, ASP George Okafor confirmed the incident.

He debunked reports that the hoodlums robbed a warehouse and other shops.

The spokesman, however, claimed that a team of policemen from the area command and safer highway repelled the robbery attack on some shops in the area.

He said one person was shot by the hoodlums and that the victim died on the way to hospital.

The robbers, he said, took to their heels on sighting the police.
