  • Ebonyi govt accuses lawmakers of embezzlement

The Ebonyi State government has accused members of the state  House of Assembly of embezzling constituency allowances released to them by the state government.

This is part of resolutions reached at this week’s state executive council meeting.

Commissioner for Information, Commerce and Industry Dr. Ifeanyi Ikeh briefed reporters after the meeting in Abakaliki that the lawmakers refused to utilise the funds for the benefits of their constituencies.

“Government observed with dismay that the constituency allowance approved for the lawmakers to initiate projects and develop their constituents and constituencies were mismanaged.

“The lawmakers have not demonstrated any level of improvement in the lives of both the constituents and constituencies in the past years.”

He urged the incoming governor, Chief Dave Umahi, to start his much talked about corruption fight from the House, if his administration is to be fair on the war against corruption as, according to him, over 80 per cent of the lawmakers were re-elected.

The commissioner described as ineptitude, the refusal of the lawmakers to pass the 2015 budget.

“The actions of the lawmakers in recent past had cost the state a lot of damage,” Ikeh said.

    Ebonyi Assembly freezes councils’ accounts

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has passed a resolution freezing the accounts of local government councils.

Chief Obasi Odefa (Onicha East) moved the motion, noting that the freezing should wait until the House concludes its investigation into their expenditures.

He said their banks should comply appropriately or be blacklisted by the incoming administration.

Odefa said salaries should be paid and principal officers submit detailed accounts within 48 hours, starting yesterday, or be sacked.

He said: “There is corruption in the system and this House is freezing their accounts pending the outcome of investigations into their finances.”

Mr. Frank Onwe (Ohaukwu North) supported the motion.

Chief Valentine Okike (Onicha West) also moved a motion to stop the government from allotting shops at the New International Market.

Mr. Ogbonnia Nwifuru (Izzi West) supporting, noted that such allotment should be done on completion.

“Government should not be in a hurry to allot stalls without completing the project.

“It is unimaginable that the stalls are allotted for N50,000, N100,000 and N500,000, and this will be difficult for people.

“The House Clerk should convey this resolution and individuals, who have paid for stalls, be refunded,” he said.

    APGA accepts Ebonyi guber results

The leadership of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Ebonyi State Wednesday said it has accepted the outcome of the last governorship and House of Assembly elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state.

The State Chairman of APGA and running mate for the APGA governorship candidate Mr. Jerry Obasi stated this in APGA.

He said that although he had certain reservations over the conduct of the election, the party decided to accept its outcome in order to give room for change in the development of the state.

Obasi advised the incoming administration to shun corruption practices or any act capable of ruining the economic prospect of the state.

He said the party has not decided whether to challenge the result at the tribunal.

“Even when I will quarrel much about the outcome of the election, there are areas where every party also faulted; the election was not perfect. However, I accept the outcome of the election and there is need for the state to forge ahead. I will continue to criticize the incoming administration; I will remain critical about issues that will not help the state.

“I believe in social justice, equity and fair play; I advise the Governor-elect to learn from history; his main agenda should be focused on infrastructure, education among other areas he should not engage in looting the public funds but engage in meaningful development of the state.

“He should write his name in gold through his developmental initiatives. I accept the outcome of the election and congratulate him. We have not decided to go the tribunal.”
