St. Paul University, Awka, and Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, have opened condolence registers in honour Dr Alex Ekwueme, Nigeria’s first elected Vice President, who died in a London clinic on Nov. 19.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Ekwueme had been the Board of Trustees Chairman of the St. Paul University since its inception in 2009 and chancellor of EBSU until his death,

Prof. Uche Isiugo-Abamihe, the Vice Chancellor, St. Paul University, said in his tribute that Ekwueme’s demise was a huge loss to the university community.

The vice chancellor noted that Ekwueme had undertaken major capital projects in the university, ensuring that it met all requirements that would facilitate securing full accreditation by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC).

Isiugo-Abamihe described Ekwueme as “irreplaceable and honourable chairman whose name would be written in gold in history of St. Paul university’’.

“He was a patriot, a man of courage, a father and a trail blazer,’’ the vice chancellor stated, adding that his achievements would be built upon.

Similarly, Chief Ikechukwu Abana, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, told NAN that the university had “lost a voice’’.

According to him, Ekwueme, as BOT Chairman, was attracting personalities to sustain the university.

A NAN correspondent who visited the university on Friday, reports that Prof. Chigozie Ogbu, a former Deputy Governor of Ebonyi and Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, was first to sign the condolence register opened late on Wednesday at EBSU after a management meeting.

Similarly, Prof. Francis Idike, the immediate past Vice Chancellor, and other principal officers of the institution numbering about 16 have so far paid tribute to Ekwueme.

His younger brother, Igwe Laz Ekwueme, who is also the traditional ruler of Oko in Anambra, had issued a statement announcing the former vice president’ s death.

Sexual harassment: EBSU sacks lecturer, suspends another

A lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Ebonyi State University, EBSU, has sacked by the school management while another in the department of History and International Relations (HIR), Onwe Chinedu Ogah has been suspended for alleged sexual harassment and extortion of students.

This is even as Students of the institution on Monday lamented the high rate of sexual harassment and extortion by their lecturers.

Ogah is currently facing disciplinary committee of the University over alleged sexual harassment and extortion.

The Nation investigations shows that students of the school pay between N10,000 and N30,000 to pass a particular course or sleep with lecturers if they cannot pay the amount with those rewriting their courses as carryovers as major victims of the trend.

The trend has been on in the school for long and has its name as sorting. A victim, Chinenye Chike said she had carryover in her HIR department because she failed to pay N10,000 demanded by the lecturer or sleep with the lecturer.

She said “I had extra year because I couldn’t give N10, 000 to my lecturer who is now facing disciplinary panel. I carried my two months old baby to re-write his course- Major World Revolution and he made me borrow extra-five courses”.

Another victim, Sylvia Ibiam said after paying money to one of her lecturers to pass her, the lecturer insisted that she must sleep with him which she refused leading to the hiding of her project by the lecturer.

When contacted, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Francis Idike confirmed that sexual harassment and extortion have become order
of the day in the institution.

“I know that there is a case involving this particular young man. I also know that by Friday the first report on the young man from the (disciplinary) committee came to me. I also know that I am
currently studying the report at the end of which I will send it to the management for decision.

“From the management, depending on their decision, it may go to council. It is only after going to Council that decision would have been reached. If the management decision is such that, because there is a kind of decision that would be reached at the management, and then it will go to Council for final decision.

“If the management takes a particular decision not involving dismissal or termination, the case stops there. That is our procedure. Right now the report has been given to me by the (disciplinary) committee last Friday. I am currently working on it. Thereafter, I will send it to my management for their decision.

“The case may end there. At the end of which if you ask me of the verdict, i will tell you. The case will proceed to Council.

“So many people have been calling me and saying that they saw it on Facebook that decision has been taken, this and that. I don’t know where these people actually get this information. I don’t know how to use Facebook and WhatsApp.

“The lecturer is on suspension. How can you sack somebody without (going through) stages? The (disciplinary) committee has completed its assignment and submitted it to the Vice-Chancellor. I am studying after which I will send it to the management.

“I don’t have the total number off head, but I know there so many of it. In fact, there was one we just decided last week based on sex for grade. A female lecturer was terminated. It happened in the Faculty of Education. Just last week, the Council took a final decision on therecommendation of the committee. And that matter has already been written and it is posted on our website. I mean there are so many of them; quite a good number of them”.

Succour has come to physically Challenged Students of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, as past union leaders have concluded arrangements to place them on scholarship from this month.

The scholarship will be sponsored by the Forum of Past Students Union Government (SUG) Presidents of EBSU.

Daniel, a lawyer, explained that the forum was formed with the aim of giving back to their alma mater.

He extolled the VC for his achievements in areas of infrastructure, academics as well as students’ and workers’ welfare.

Daniel explained that the visit was to tell the VC that the forum was ready to partner with him and the school towards the advancement of the institution.

He urged the VC to ensure that the school keyed into the agriculture policy of both the Federal and state government by ensuring that no plot of land is left fallow, advising that every student be given a portion of land to cultivate.

“We have come together as a body to see how we can give back to this great university which has done so much for    )us. As you can see all of us are already doing well in our various fields courtesy of the rich impact this school made on us.

“By next year, we will start by offering scholarships to physically challenged students in this university. We will also be volunteering useful contributions, advice and information to you and the entire management of this great school to ensure that this school is rated among the best in this country. We also appeal to you to use your good office to ensure that this institution keys into the agricultural policy of the current governments,” he said.

In response, Idike said the institution was ready to relate and interact with its former students and commended the former presidents for the impact they made during their times in the school.

He said the forum would be very helpful not only to the alumni of the university but also in building up the students of the institution.

The management, in a statement, said this followed the inconclusiveness of the ASUU National Executive Council meeting held at the weekend in Kano State.

It said academic activities will resume in all the campuses today.

The Registrar, Sam N. Egwu, said: “Having waited patiently for the Federal Government and ASUU to resolve the impasse behind the over four months strike embarked upon by the Union to no avail, the management of EBSU has resolved to re-open the school.

A source said: “None of the lecturers are happy about the strike; they gave 80 per cent support to the plan by the management to resume academic activities at the last meeting of the school management.

A source said: “The EBSU-ASUU chairman was not at the meeting and no reason was given regarding his absence. I learnt ASUU got wind of the agenda of the meeting and decided to boycott it.”

But the EBSUU-ASUU Chairman, Prof Ndubuisi Idenyi, dissociated the Union from the purported reopening by the management and maintained that the strike was still in progress.

“We are still on strike until we are given a contrary directive from the national leadership,” he said.

Idenyi warned the school management not to dare the lecturers, adding that the Union was ready for a showdown, if the management decides to punish their members for refusing to resume work.
