  • Four remanded for ‘murder’

    An Ebute-Meta Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded four men in Ikoyi Prisons following their arraignment for allegedly conspiring to beat up a man to death.

    Chief Magistrate O.O. Olatunji remanded them pending advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

    Wasiu Wahab, 28; Yusuf Adebayo, 28; Ramoni Ibrahim, 28; and Yusuf Adegbite, 25, were arraigned on a temporary two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oladele Adebayo alleged that the defendants committed the offence on July 8 at Badore Jetty in Ajah, Lagos.

    The court heard that the men conspired to beat up Olamode Omolegbe, 22, to death during a street fight.

    The defendants’ pleas were not taken.

    Olatunji adjourned till August 26.

  • Driver, 43, accused of injuring two RRS officers

    A 43 driver, Muri Lasisi, was on Tuesday arraigned at an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly driving recklessly and injuring two Rapid Response Squad (RRS) officers

    He pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of reckless driving,  driving without a driver’s licence and causing injury.

    Prosecuting Inspector Raphel Boney said Lasisi committed the offences on July 12, on Eko Bridge, Lagos Island.

    He alleged that Lasisi recklessly drove an LT bus with number-plate XS 348 LSR without regard to other road users.

    “Lasisi drove against traffic and in a bid to avoid oncoming vehicles; he swerved the vehicle and hit two RRS officers, Sergean Michael Edem and Oluwatayo Adedeji, causing them severe injuries.”

    Magistrate B.A. Ajiferuke granted the defendant N200, 000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    He adjourned till August 20.

    A driver, Seun Adelakun, on Tuesday appeared at a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly driving recklessly and causing the death of Shofe Gbenato.

    Adelakun, 47, faced three-count charge of manslaughter, reckless driving and driving in a wrong way.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clement Okuoimose said the defendant committed the offence on July 12 at Gethrome on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

    He alleged that Adelakun drove a Mitsubishi car with number-plate FU 774 LSR in a dangerous manner, causing the death of Gbenato, 37.

    “The defendant also caused injury to a 28-year-old woman, Comfort Yussuph,” the prosecutor added.

    Okuoimose said the defendant drove without a valid driver’s licence on a public highway in a direction prohibited by law.

    Chief Magistrate Lazarus Hotepo granted the defendant N100, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler or a Level 12 civil servants with means of identification.

    He adjourned till October 2.

  • Man accused of hiring assassin

    An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that 34-year-old Ndubuisi Ugo remanded following his arraignment for allegedly hiring an assassin for a 33-year-old man.

    Magistrate Tolu Agbona ordered that the case file be sent to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    He adjourned till July 27.

    Prosecuting Inspector A. Raphael said the defendant hired an assassin to kill one Mr Ohneoka Oderhowo.

    He said the defendant committed the offence on May 17 at 3, Atunbi Christ Street, Tedo-Muwo, Ojo.

  • Court remands man for alleged murder, burning of body

    An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Wednesday ordered that a man, Idris Mohammed, who allegedly killed a man and burnt his body to be remanded in prison, pending legal advice.

    Chief Magistrate O. O. Olatunji, who did not take the plea of the accused, ordered that he be remanded in Ikoyi Prison, pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    He adjourned the matter till July 10.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oladele Adebayo told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 2, at Ojora Street, off Governor’s Road, Ikotun, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant used a 2×4 piece of wooden plank to hit the deceased, Monday (surname unknown) on his head, killing him and burning the corpse to conceal his act.

    Also, a sexagenarian, Cletus Williams, who allegedly hacked his colleague to death, was yesterday brought before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Williams, 60, a security guard, appeared on a charge of murder. His plea was not taken.

    Prosecuting Inspector D. Raphel told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 24, around 1am at the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu.

    He alleged that the defendant had used a machete to hack John Okorogor, 30, now deceased all over his body to death while he was asleep at his duty post.

    Magistrate Tolu Agbona remanded the defendant at the Ikoyi prison pending an outcome of legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    He adjourned till July 15.

  • Suspected cultists arraigned for Neighbourhood man’s murder

    An Ebute-Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday remanded in prison custody two suspected cultists, Monday Obasi and Yekini Moshood, charged with murder.

    Obasi, 35 and Moshood, 34 were accused of killing a Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps officer (LNSC), Monsuru Bolaji.

    Chief Magistrate A.O. Salawu ordered that the defendants should be kept in Ikoyi Prison pending advice from the office of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    She made the order following an application by the State Criminal Intelligence Investigation Department (SCIID) Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

    The application was based on a temporary two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping contrary to Sections 223 and 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendants’ pleas were not taken.

    Salawu adjourned till July 11.

    Earlier, prosecuting Inspector Kehinde Olatunde alleged that the defendant committed the offences at about 9pm on February 21, at a bar in Aguda, Surulere, Lagos.

    Olatunde said on the day of the incident, Bolaji was on night duty and was preparing to resume work.

    A five-man gang of cultists, including the defendants, ambushed him as left home to join a patrol van that would take him and his colleagues to their duty posts.

    They opened fire at Bolaji but he fled towards Umunede Bar, on Mallam Isah Close, Aguda, Surulere.

    They continued shooting and match enthusiasts, who were watching the Champions League match between Manchester United and Sevilla in the bar, fled.

    The hoodlums eventually caught up with him, shot and stabbed him, before fleeing. He was rushed to a hospital in the community, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

    Badoo members docked in Lagos court

    Seven alleged members of the dreaded Badoo cult who have been causing unrest in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State were on Friday brought before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, Afolabi Kessington (25), Ismaila Shaibu (36), Mutiu Nurudeen (26), Ibrahim Bello (25), Lukman Mohammed (35), Gift Itafa (50) and Sheriff Adewunmi (23).

    The accused faced a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.

    They, however, pleaded innocence of the charges.

    The Prosecutor, ASP Fidelis Dike, said that the accused committed the offences between July 3 and July 5 at Powerline, Agbala area of Ikorodu and also at Irawo Estate, Owode-Onirin in Lagos.

    He said that the accused, who are members of the Badoo cult, had conspired and gathered in the above mentioned areas to have their meeting, which was deemed illegal.

    The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravened Section 42(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Kofo Ariyo, admitted each of the accused to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, one of whom must be a blood relation.

    The case has been adjourned until Aug. 9, for mention.

     

  • Togolese charged with beating three year-old niece to death

    An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday remanded a Togolese trader, Afi Koumebio, who allegedly beat her three-year-old niece to death.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Bola Folarin-Williams, remanded in Ikoyi Prisons, 30-year-old Koumebio, who resides on Mosafejo Road, Amukoko, Lagos.

    The court could not take the plea of the accused as the magistrate said that she needed advice from the state’s director of public prosecution.

    Folarin-Williams adjourned the case until May 10 for mention.

    According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Olatunde, the accused beat the minor, hit her head on a wall and killed her on March 26 at 8.00p.m. at her residence.

    Olatunde submitted that Koumebio beat the girl because she entered her neighbour’s room.

    He noted that murder contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes death sentence for convicted murderers.

    Court arraigns seven suspected cultists

    The police have arraigned seven suspected cultists before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly belonging to an unlawfully society.

    The suspects, Riliwan Okegbenro19;Tolulope Omolaja  23;Michael Green,20;Musiliu Lateef,20; Shola Ogundeji,22; Ayuba Sulaimon, 20; Olushola Sikiru,26, were said to be members of Aiye confraternity.

    It was said that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner that caused breach of peace.
    The defendants were said to have conspired with others at large on May 7 at 5pm at Pasokun Street, Aga – Ikorodu.

    The prosecuting police, Corporal Kokoye Olusegun said that the defendants committed an offence punishable under Section 409, 166, 41 and 42 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The defence counsel, Saka Bello and Imelda Adebambo prayed for the bail of their clients in the most liberal terms.

    The presiding magistrate Fowowe Erusiafe granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N50, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

    She added that each of the sureties must be blood relation of the accused persons.

    The matter was adjourned to July 18.
