    ECOBA Lagos branch lifts graduating pupils

    The Lagos branch of Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA) has presented awards and cash to 24 graduating students to encourage excellence in academic work, sports as well as other activities

    Making the presentation during the Edo College Prize giving day in Benin City, the Edo State capital, the Chairman, Board of Administrators, ECOBA Lagos, Education Trust Fund, Prof. E. S. Akpata, emphasised the importance of good character in the success of the student’s life, a prize is awarded for the student with the most exemplary character.

    “In recognition of the role of environment in shaping human behaviour, there is also an award of a trophy to the cleanest boarding house. A trophy was presented to the best class in French, as well as the cleanest boarding house.

    “These prize awards are made possible by the benevolence of old boys of Edo College resident in Lagos. Their donations have been invested by the Board of Administrators of the Education Trust Fund, and only the interest is used for the annual prize awards which are, therefore in perpetuity.

    “Consequently, if you have not won a prize this year, do not lose hope. Continue working hard and you will stand a chance of winning next year. Edo College Old Boys in Lagos recognise that teachers serve as role models for students and congratulate them for their excellent Job.

    “As a token, the best teacher in Geography is awarded a prize donated by the Ugoji family in memory of their father, fondly known as Omaha, who taught us Geography. The same endowment supports a geography project annually,” he noted.

    He advised the outgoing SS3 students to remember that they are going to a global world and they are, therefore, ambassadors of the college and they must strive to maintain the discipline and good character that they have imbibed from the school.

    Edo State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Joan Oviawe, who was represented by Mrs. A. Ero, presented the award for Mathematics SS3 endowed by Senator David Dafinone Foundation to Adejumo Tiwaloluwa and the award for English Language SS3 endowed by Austin Alegeh (SAN) in his mother’s name-(Omokhuwe Alegeh) was presented to Imafidon Stephen by Chief Orhue Usiobafo Xerxes.

    Chief Orhue Usiobafo Xerxes, who was the chairman of the event, presented the award for Economics SS3 to Adewolu Joseph Oluwatobilola and the award for Accounts to Agbondinwingbe Martins. Both awards are endowed by the Senator David Dafinone Foundation.

    ECOBA gives awards to exceptional students

    Ihe Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA) has presented awards to some students of Edo College, Benin City, for exceptional performances in various subjects in the last academic session. The award plaques and cash prizes were presented to the students at the graduation/prize giving ceremony organised by the  the school recently.

    The ceremony, which was part of the activities to mark the end of 2016/2017 academic session, had in attendance many dignitaries, including Mr. Arnaud Dornon, the French Cultural Attachee in Nigeria; Ambassador Vincent Okobi, who chaired the event and Head of Service, Edo State Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Gladys Idahor, represented by Permanent Secretary, Edo State Civil Service Commission, Reverend S.O Uwuangue.

    The recipients were Erokpadamwen Andrew, who won Senator David Dafinone’s prize for Further Mathematics in SS3, the Godwin Ize-Iyamu prize for Mathematics in JSS 3 students went to  Ajah Success Ifeanyi, the Senator David Dafinone Foundation prizes for Economics  and Accounts in SS3  were clinched by Eguavoen  Constance, the Edward Iyamu prize for Physics  in SS3  was given to Igbinijesu Samuel, the SS3 prize for Fine Art, donated by Michael Omo-Osagie, went to Akhigbe Ofure,  Air Vice Marshall Joe Ehigie’s prize for Drama was given to Enofe Eseosa, Osazenaye Osarenkhoe’s prize for Agricultural Science in SS3 was awarded to Uwadiae  Erickson who also won the Madam Ofure Akpata’s prize for Biology, while the Omaha Endowment Foundation prize for Geography went to Odoemenem Chinedu.

    At the JSS 3 level, Ambassador Vincent Okobi’s prize for Best student in French was given to Ehimhen Stevenson

    Other award recipients were Igbinijesu Samuel who won the Overall Best Performing student award, Okeghemu E. Emmanuel, Best Performing Student in JSS 3 and Igiehon Ekpenede who bagged the most hard-working student award.

    In the staff category, Jeffery Igbinedion won the Best Administrator award, Ifueko Evbenage, Best English Teacher award, while Mrs. Ighile Esther was awarded Most Resourceful Staff.

    Chairman on the occasion, who is also an old boy of the college, Ambassador Okobi congratulated the students for their success after many years of study in the school.

    The Principal, Mr. Raphael Omorogbe, congratulated the graduating students, saying the boys have done well by upholding the true value of the college, and for obeying the rules and regulations.

    Omorogbe appreciated parents and staff for their support throughout the 2016/2017 academic session, stressing that the occasion wouldn’t have been possible without their moral and financial support.

    In his lecture, the Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Benin,Prof E.O. Iyamucommended the hard-work of the students and admonished them to stay away from any form of deviant behavior that might put them and their parents to shame.

    He encouraged the students to always have regard for constituted authorities and obey rules and regulations wherever they find themselves. He added that they should keep on the reading culture as they have already been equipped with tools to guide them towards excellence.

    Also advising the students, the Head of Service, Edo State Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Gladys Idahor represented by the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Civil Service Commission, Reverend S.O Uwuangueadvised the graduating students to be good ambassadors of the school by keeping the ball rolling anywhere they find themselves.

    Also speaking at the occasion, the Honorable Commissioner for Education, Edo State,Mr. Christopher Adesotu represented by Mrs. A.P Joel congratulated all students of the school, which according to her, is known for academic excellence and assured them of success.

    Highlights of the event was thepresentation of a song by Heavenly Voices, cultural display by Edo College’s Cultural Club, special presentation by members of the press club of the graduating class.

    The event also featured presentation of awards and prizes for excellence by ECOBA to outstanding students and staff, while awards for best French class and best French students was presented by the chairman of the occasion Ambassador Okobi.

  • ECOBA holds meeting Sunday

    The Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA), Lagos Branch, holds its next bi-monthly general meeting on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the Northern Foreshore Estate, Lekki.

    Chairman of the association, Mr Godwin Ize-Iyamu, noted that the old boys would discuss “the forthcoming prize-giving day of Edo College; the proposed endowment fund; among others.”

    Ize-Iyamu commended the members of ECOBA, Lagos Branch, for their unflinching support since his administration was inaugurated two years ago.  The meeting would be hosted by Capt. & Mrs. Benson Ikponmwosa & Family.

    Edo College, founded in 1937, was a pioneer secondary school in the old mid-western region and later Bendel state.

  • ECOBA honours Aguele, others

    The Edo College Old Boys Association, ECOBA, Lagos Branch has honoured some of its members at its Annual Dinner and Dance at Ruby Gardens in Lekki, Lagos.

    The recipients included the Chairman of Grenigas Limited, Emmanuel Aguele, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), Country Senior Partner for PwC Nigeria, Mr. Uyi Akpata and Executive Director with Zenith Bank Mr. Kingsley Aigbonkhaevbo.

    Aguele, the recipient of the Life Time Achievement Award, left Edo College in 1954. He sat for Cambridge School Certificate in 1954 and passed in grade one. He obtained First class Honours Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Calcutta. He then moved to the United Kingdom to study for his Post graduate diploma at Imperial College. He also did his internship in Civil Engineering Construction with Earnest Ireland Ltd.

    In 1963, he moved to Bristol, attending courses at Bristol University and continued internship in a Consulting Firm Underwood &Partners. He returned to Nigeria in 1965 with a Masters Degree in Structures at the Imperial College London and Memberships of the British Civil and Structural Engineering Societies.

    Aguele held many important positions in the public service including the Director Development and Engineering with the Federal Capital Authority. He headed a team of Top Engineers to supervise the final Design of Phase 1&2 and thereby commence construction of the infrastructure, including Road Network, Water supply, Electrification, Solid waste disposal mechanism, Urban Planning and Implementation of neighborhood Facilities.

    On effectively leaving public service, Chief Emmanuel  went on to develop further a family business  GRENIGAS LIMITED and as well as HENDRICKS HOLDING, with  primary interests in Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) and Agriculture.

    Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), who was in Edo College from 1975 – 1980, was honoured for his outstanding performance in the legal profession. He was called to bar in 1986 after studying Law at the University of Benin.

    In recognition of his modest contribution to the development of the law in Nigeria, The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee elevated him to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2007.

    On July 15, 2014, Mr. Augustine O. Alegeh was elected the 27th President of the Nigerian Bar Association, the umbrella professional association of all lawyers admitted to the Bar in Nigeria where he has continued to champion positive reforms.

    He is a member of the Board of Directors in a host of companies with vast interests in Construction, Information Technology, Engineering, Real Estate and Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG).

    Kingsley Aigbokhaevbo, who was in Edo College, Benin City for his secondary education between 1977 and 1982, was honoured for his sterling performance in the banking industry. After leaving Edo College, he gained admission into the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo state in 1983. He graduated from the school with B.sc Hons (Agric. Economics) Second Class Upper Division in 1988.

    After a stint in Audit at D.O Dafinone & Co.  he later joined Zenith Bank Plc. in 1993 as an Assistant Banking Officer and was there till 2007 when he left as a General Manager. He joined UBA in 2007 as a General Manager and left in 2011 before joining Ecobank Nig Ltd. He is in the bank to date as Executive Director overseeing Lagos and Southwest directorate.

    Uyi Akpata, who was honoured for his excellent performance in the Audit, Oil and Gas sectors, is the Country Senior Partner for PwC Nigeria and Regional Senior Partner for the West Market Area. He is also PwC’s Africa Oil and Gas leader.  1984 graduate of Accounting from the University of Lagos, Uyi became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in November 1986 and is currently a Fellow of the Institute. He gained entrance into Edo College in 1974 and left after completing his O levels in 1979.

    Uyi  has  extensive  knowledge  and  experience  leading  the  audit  of  companies  in various sectors of the Nigerian economy. He has particular interest in the Energy and Utilities  industries  and  for  over  fifteen  years,  led  various  Assurance  engagement teams serving  large multinationals  including ExxonMobil,  Chevron and ENI  and of integrated and emerging regional Oil& amp; Gas companies, such as Oando and SaharaGroup.

  • ECOBA Lagos holds ‘Ancients’ Day

    Old students of Edo College, Benin who left school 50 years ago had a swell time last Saturday at the 2014 ‘Ancients Day’ programme organised by the Lagos State branch of the Edo College Old Boys Association ECOBA).

    The ‘ancients’ enjoyed a relaxing time at the Pearl Garden Restaurant, Victoria Island Lagos, reminiscing, interaction, counseling and mentoring younger members of the association.

    In his remark, Chairman of ECOBA Lagos, Mr. Godwin Ize- Iyamu congratulated members of the special group.  He also informed them of the association’s annual dinner coming up December 13, at Ruby’s Place, Lekki.

    The highpoint of the event was the induction of Dr. Osarieme Bazuaye into the well-regarded group. Dr. Bazuaye, a Veterinary Surgeon, who was also a Marketing Manager at Pfizer and a senior president at the former MTS, left Edo College in 1964.

    Other ancients present at the event include Prof Gabriel Osuide, the pioneer Director-General, National Agency for Food, Drug  Administration and Control (NAFDAC),  Mr. Adams Idufueko, Prof. E.S. Akpata, Mr. B. Fadaka, and Air Vice-Marshal Joe Ehigie

    Edo College, one of the model secondary schools in Edo State, is a full-boarding school for boys.

    ECOBA rewards 11 Edo College pupils

    Pupils of Edo College, Benin City were ecstatic on Friday last week as the Lagos branch of the Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA) revived the school’s prize giving day.

    Eleven pupils who distinguished themselves in Mathematics, English Language, Economics, Accounts, Fine Art, Agricultural Science, Physics and Biology in the 2013/2014 academic session were rewarded with plaques and cash prizes.

    Audu Donald, an SS3 pupil, was the star of the event, carting away prizes in English Language, Physics and Biology.

    He was represented by his mother, Mrs. Margret Audu, who expressed joy with her son’s performance.

    The Head Boy of School, Eribo Richmond, won the prize for Mathematics. He thanked ECOBA Lagos Chapter for the prizes and expressed optimism of becoming a mechanical Engineer. He said that the Award has boosted his confidence.

    Olu Osei Victor, an SSIII pupil, won the prize for Fine Art, while Ogieva Osahenrumwen, a JSS 3 pupil won in English Language, while Osazuwa Eghosa clinched the prize for SS III Mathematics. He was accompanied by his father, a graduate of Mathematics from University of Nigeria Nsukka and retired principal. He said as a former mathematics teacher, his son Osazuwa, sees him as a role model.

    Speaking at the event, representative of ECOBA, Lagos branch and the Chairman of the Education Fund of the chapter, Prof E.S. Akpata, said that the initiative was part of the efforts of ECOBA, Lagos to encourage the pupils of the school to work hard and excel academically.

    The Professor of Dentistry, at the College of Medicine, Lagos State University, added that funds donated by members of the Lagos State branch of the Association have been invested to yield dividends which will be used for future awards.

    He advised the students who did not win prizes in the inaugural edition to work harder as provision has been made for next year’s event.

    In his remarks, the Principal of Edo College, Deacon Godwin Osawomwan, praised the old boys for their laudable programmes which he said, has helped the students’ development and has repositioned the school to an enviable height in Edo State.

    He recounted the immense contributions of the different classes of the Old Boys Association to include provision of interlocking tiles in some parts of the school compound, provision of magnetic white Boards, Desks and Chairs, renovation of the schools Hall amongst others.

    TPT Managing Director Mr. Charles Igbinidu has been honoured by Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA), Lagos Branch. An astute media and marketing communications practitioner, Igbinidu was conferred with the association’s prestigious ECOBITE of the Year Award at this year’s edition of the association’s annual dinner/dance celebration held at Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Ikeja, Lagos.

    Conferring the award on the media/PR practitioner, the Chairman of Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA), Lagos Branch, Senator Victor Kassim Oyofo  who was represented by the Vice Chairman, Mr. Godwin Ize-Iyamu, said the award was conferred on Igbinidu “in recognition of your contribution and support to the association and its activities,” adding:“We are also pleased with your service to the growth and development of ECOBA, Edo College, and as a successful media practitioner and publisher in Nigeria”.

    Igbinidu has distinguished himself as an erudite marketing communications and media practitioner with knack for potency and effervescent results. He’s known to have helped grown notable products to world brands through strategic communications and top notch PR solutions.

    Igninidu, who also doubles as the publisher/editor-in-chief of ionigeria.com, (an online publication that provides credible, reliable, balanced and all-inclusive information and news about Nigeria, Africa and the world), attended the prestigious Edo College between 1979 and 1983. Upon graduation he proceeded to the University of Benin where he studied Political Science graduating in flying colours in 1989. He complemented his bachelor’s degree with a Post graduate Certificate at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism before commencing his professional media career at The Guardian in 1991.

    He committed two years into active journalism before moving to Insight Communications where he kick-started his career in the field of marketing communications where he has distinguished himself as one of Africa’s top public relations strategist. He has since continued to garner international recognition and accolades on all fronts. Just recently, he was recognised and appointed member of the Global Advisory Council of the World Brand Congress – the single largest rendezvous of best brains behind some of the world’s most successful and sought after brands.

    He is noted for his result-focused orientation, as well as his close working relationship with the media, influencers, decision makers, politicians, and celebrities. Aside having served as the Publicity Secretary of Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA), Lagos Branch for four consecutive years, Igbinidu has also served in the association’s Dinner/Dance Committee for over a decade.

    A member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Igbinidu was honoured alongside two other renowned alumnus of Edo College, Chief (Capt) Samuel Ohioman, a pioneer pilot in Nigeria and Dan Akpovwa, a distinguished journalist. They received the Life time Achievement Award and Ecobite of the Year award.
