  • Abiodun, Toriola, others may get improved ranking

Despite their early exits at the 2019 ITTF World Championships in Budapest, Nigeria’s Bode Abiodun, Segun Toriola, Olajide Omotayo, Olfunke Oshonaike, Edem Offiong and Ajoke Ojomu may get improved ranking when the May 2019 ITTF ranking is released next week.

From their performance in Budapest, it was clear that the win recorded by the Nigerians will rub off positively on their fortune in the latest ranking.

Despite going out from the group stages, Toriola, Omotayo, Oshonaike, Offiong and Ojomu will be rewarded for their victory against their opponents with ranking points as well as participation bonus points when the rating will be unveiled.

However, Abiodun who was unbeaten in the group may get a much more improvement following his exploits in the group and for making the knockout round of the preliminary.

The best performing African player in the competition is Aruna Quadri and there are strong indications that he might jumped into top 20 in the world.

Despite exiting in the first round of the men’s singles, Egypt’s Omar Assar and Ahmed Saleh may also gain some points for starting their campaigns from the main draw.

Dina Meshref, the only African female player that progressed to the second round of the women’s singles will surely get an improved rating when the ranking is released next week.

  • Abiodun misses out in main draw

It was a narrow loss for Bode Abiodun yesterday as the only surviving Nigerian that waded through the group stage to compete in the preliminary knockout of the 2019 World Championships holding in Budapest, Hungary.

Abiodun was unbeaten from the group stage and even in the final match to decide his fate to the main draw, the Nigerian was in the driving seat before his Saudi Arabia’s opponent – Ali Alkhadrawi caught up with his to end the encounter at 4-3 to the disappointment of the fans.

However, the Germany-based Saudi Arabian star admitted that it was tough beating Abiodun.

“It was indeed a very difficult match and when I was down 1-3 my coach just told me to continue the match and not to give up. I am very happy and proud to be playing in the main draw of the World Championships. This has been my dream to play in the big stage like the World Championships and I hope to go further now that I am in the main draw. My opponent was very good in forehand; his attack and service were very difficult for me. I am so happy that I will be playing in the main draw with the best players in the world,” Alkhadrawi said.

Also, Edem Offiong hope of playing in the main draw was ended by her Swedish counterpart in the final group match of the women’s singles.

  • 2019 Spanish Open: Offiong, Azeez battle for honours in singles

Former African champion, Edem Offiong and compatriot – Jamiu Azeez will be aiming for glory in the singles event at the 2019 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open which serves off today.

Offiong who is warming up for next month’s World Championship in Hungary will be competing from the group stage of the women’s singles while Italy-based Azeez will also be starting his campaign from the group stage of the men’s singles.

Already, the Spanish-based Offiong has been drawn in Group 14 alongside Hungary’s Feher Orsolya, Portugal’s Andrade Raquel and Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Chiao.

The Nigeria will start her quest to advance from the group against the Portuguese while her second match later today will be against the Hungarian. Her last group match against the Taiwanese holds tomorrow to determine the leader of the group that will progress to the knockout stage.

Azeez has been drawn in Group 27 of the men’s singles alongside Spain’s Martinez Guillermo, Moldova’s Cissa Victor and Portugal’s Silva Andre. Azeez will battle the Moldovan in the first group match while his second match will be against the Portuguese. Tomorrow he will face the Spaniard to determine his fate of progressing to the knockout round of the tournament.

Also, 2018 runner’s up, Austria’s Robert Gardos will be aiming to reclaim his title as the number two seed of the competition in the men’s singles.

According to ITTF Editor, Ian Marshal, Gardos is a major challenger for honours.

“Moreover, can the player, renowned as one of the most dedicated and hardworking on the international stage, make it third time lucky; or perhaps more accurately, third time successful? In 2006, in the men’s singles final at the ITTF World Tour Chile Open in Santiago, Gardos was beaten by Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus in a full distance seven games final determined by the very narrowest of margins,” he said.

Marshall added: “There is no doubt that Robert Gardos has experience on his side but he does not have time on his side? Earlier this year on the day prior to the commencement of qualification for the 2019 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open, he celebrated his 40th birthday.”

  • Oshonaike …nurturing future stars

    Oshonaike …nurturing future stars

At 42, Olufunke Oshonaike has continued to show her passion and commitment to table tennis, the sport that brought her to the limelight. At present, Oshonaike is the best female table tennis player in Africa after winning the African Championship in Morocco last year. However, the Germany-based mother of two told OLALEKAN OKUSAN that she was pained about the dwindling fortunes of the sport and this has prompted her to organise a clinic. She also spoke on the need for athletes to be discipline in their trade.

IN the history of the African Games, Olufunke Oshonaike is the most successful female table tennis player having won more medals than any other player. She was three-time finalist in the women’s singles event of the African Games while she remains the only player to have won the women’s singles title back-to-back in 1999 and 2003.

However, with the emergence of young players like Dina Meshref, Nadeen El-Dawlatly and Edem Offiong, Olufunke Oshonaike rating waned. But she never gave up as she continued to show deep passion for the sport with her presence in virtually all the continental competitions.

In most of the competitions, she ensured she made it to the last four, but her efforts never fetch her expected laurels.

She, however, braved the odds to become Africa’s champion again and she did it in an amazing fashion in Morocco last October. As the only female Nigerian player competing at the 2016 ITTF African Championships amidst the array of players from Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, Oshonaike in her 40s turned back the clock with an emphatic 4-2 win over defending champion, Dina Meshref of Egypt to emerge as the best female player in the competition.

Based in Hamburg, Germany with her family, Oshonaike is, however, sad that the fortunes of female players in Nigeria is going down and she decided to organise a clinic for junior players in Nigeria.

According to  Oshonaike, the essence of the 10-day camping exercise is to inspire and motivate the players to passionately be committed to the sport.

“Not many of the players know my story but I started like them too. But during our days, discipline was very key and we took the sport very serious. I can understand the frustration most Nigerian athletes are faced with in recent times particularly considering the economic recession in the country. But I still want them to know that they can make name for themselves and their families when they take the sport serious.

“They must be committed to the sport and that is part of the things I intend to share with them during the camp. My focus is basically on the female players because we are not producing top class female players like before,” she lamented.

“I love table tennis and the sport has given me all what I need in life. Apart from the fame, I have made a tidy fortune from the sport. All these were made possible because I was committed to the sport and this made it possible for me to achieve all what I wanted to.  Unfortunately these days, the Nigerian players are frustrated because of lack of exposure and this has discouraged most of them.

“I am hopeful that the clinic will help to the kids focus on their table tennis career. I want to use the opportunity to inspire and also help them with some equipment that will aid them in training. I really want to focus on the female players and I hope that after telling them my story, they will be encouraged to aim high in the sport,” she said.

Oshonaike revealed that apart from the clinic, top 16 boys and girls in the country would also compete in a two-day tournament to ascertain the best in the country. She added that the top players in the mini-tournament would get her support to become the world beaters in the game.

The six-time Olympian believes the gesture will surely give the players hope. “I believe when top players like us organise such programme for the young players, they can be inspired and motivated to take a cue from us. I am hoping to arrive in Lagos, Nigeria on February 24 for the clinic that will begin on February 25 to March 5 at the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) Training Centre of the Lagos National Stadium,” she added.

The invited players for the clinic are made up of 11 girls and nine boys and they are expected to also use the tournament to tune up for the forthcoming African Junior Championships holding in Tunisia come April.

  • ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup: Why I couldn’t make it to Sudan – Oshonaike

ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup: Why I couldn’t make it to Sudan – Oshonaike

After absenting herself from the 2016 ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup in Sudan, six-time Olympian, Olufunke Oshonaike has blamed it on paucity of fund.

The trio of Aruna Quadri, Segun Toriola and Edem Offiong had to sponsor themselves to the tournament after the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) failed the secure the needed fund for the trip from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

However, the Germany-based star told NationSport from her base in Hamburg that she would have loved to be at the tournament but she could not raise the fund to prosecute the trip. She lamented that it is disheartening that athletes had to be using their hard-earned money to represent their fatherland.

“I don’t think this is too good for the country that in the year of the Olympics and we had a competition that would have helped us prepare well and unfortunately we could not get fund from NSC. At several times, we had to sponsor ourselves to competition and I think this is not too good for us because we also have responsibilities to our family,” she lamented.

For the players competing at the Rio Olympics, Oshonaike tasked NSC to support all athletes to fulfil their dream of making the country proud. “Being the Olympics year, I want to use this medium to task the NSC to please support every athlete going to the Olympics in Brazil because this is the biggest stage for all of us,” she added.

Meanwhile, Nigerian players failed to make it to the final in the women event after Edem Offiong was defeated 4-1 in the semifinal by Egypt’s Dina Meshref.

  • ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup: Offiong to redeem image in Sudan

ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup: Offiong to redeem image in Sudan

Edem Offiong has put the disappointment of the 2015 African Games in Congo Brazzaville as what she is hoping for at the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup is Sudan is to right the wrong that befell her few months ago.

As the defending champion of the African Games, Edem Offiong could on hold to her title as she was shown the exit in the knockout stage by the eventual winner, Egypt’s Dina Meshref.

However, a determined Offiong who is now playing her trade in the Portuguese league said she is hoping to redeem her image by clinching the title in Sudan.

“I know it is not going to be easy in Sudan though my expectation is high because I am targeting the title in Sudan. I did not regret that I could not retain my singles title at the African Games in Brazzaville because the chat did not favour after I failed to feature at the 2015 African Senior Cup in Cameroun. I was not ranked for the games and this made me to play against Dine Meshref early in the competition. She was lucky to have won because I played incredibly well and she even admitted it,” she lamented.

She added: “I must say that the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup is going to be a tough one which I know. My last appearance in the competition was a disaster because I got a walkover, when Nigeria hosted the competition which was also unbelievable for everybody. But as an athlete, you have to get used to the fact that you can win today and lose tomorrow. You have to take the positive out of a defeat and go back to work hard which I did. I am ready to get to the final in this event and probably win the title,” she enthused.

On what to expect in Sudan, Edem Offiong said: “I am ready for this tournament and I can assure you that all my opponents will feel the heat back-to-back. Since I returned to my base in Portugal it has not been easy playing matches non-stop. But the good about the whole scenario is that we have been winning all our matches. I must thank my teammates as well as my coach. I must single out the support we are getting form my club president, Garrido for ensuring that as ladies, we are well catered for before and after every match. I must acknowledge that this has really made me a better player.”

Edem Offiong hopes to play for another six years, saying “I intend to play as long as my strength continues to carry me.”

She however, expressed optimism that she would make it to her third Olympics appearance in Brazil at the Olympics Qualifying tournament which holds after the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup.

Having claimed three titles in 2015, the Egyptian duo of Omar Assar and Dina Meshref top the list of invitees for the two-day tournament to be staged at the International Conference Centre in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan.

Egypt topples Nigeria in women’s final

From 2-0 down,  Egypt gave their   fans something to cheer at the ongoing International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Senior Championship in Cairo, as their women team beat Nigeria to clinch gold in the team event.

From the start of the match, it was as if the North Africans had been silenced with Edem Offiong beating Nadeen El-Dawlatly 3-0 while Funke Oshonaike increased it to 2-0 after beating Dina Meshref 3-1.

But things turned around for the Egyptians in the third match which was inspired by 18-year-old Yousra Helmy, who defeated Cecilia Otu-Akpan 3-0 for the game to change.

Helmy’s win was the tonic the Egyptians needed to come back and win the match at 3-2. The Egypt trio described the victory as a cherished one, especially coming from 2-0 down to win at 3-2.

“The win was special because I have never beaten Funke Oshoniake before. In the first match against Edem Offiong I was a bit nervous and I knew we might likely meet again, so I just played my game. I didn’t  believe we could come back, so this victory was indeed a very special one for us as a team,” said Nadeen El-Dawlatly.

For Meshref, “Playing against Edem Offiong, I knew I had to give 100 percent concentration because we might not have any other time to win than this. So we gave our best and we won.”

However, the youngest player in the team, Helmy said: “In playing the third game, I was nervous because I had never played against any Nigerian player before and I thought I just had to give my best. Winning the first game was vital but it was also difficult as well. But when I won it my confidence grew and my morale was boosted to finish up the game. I am happy that we won the game because I knew that if I did not win, it would be hard for us to win.”
