  • Lagos CP probes killing of 16 years old boy during protest

Lagos State Police  Commissioner Edgal Imohimi  has ordered investigation into the alleged killing of a 16-year-old boy, Emmanuel Chukwu, by the police.

Chukwu allegedly died from gunshot wounds on March 11 when policemen from Ijora Badia Division were dispersing  protesters to prevent a mob from lynching a suspected female kidnapper.

Police spokesman in Lagos, SP Chike Oti, said that the Command had ordered an  immediate investigation to clear the air on the issue.

Oti said: “On the 11th of March, 2018, a distress call was received that a suspected kidnapper was about being lynched by irate mob at Afolabi Street, Ijora-Badia.

“The police mobilised some patrol teams to rescue the woman under attack. On getting to the scene, the police team discovered that the woman had been stripped, she was helpless and at the verge of imminent death.

“The team braved the odds and rescued the woman from the jaws of death.

“The mob comprising youths, cult boys and other miscreants who were armed with dangerous weapons stormed the police station and attempted to whisk away the woman who was already in police protective custody.

“They fired sporadically into the police station, throwing stones, petrol bombs and other missiles to overawe the police and forcefully take away the woman whom they accused of kidnapping a yet to be identified person and dispense jungle judgement on her even when the accusation against her had not been established”.

According to Oti, the Police resisted the attempt by the mob to raze the police station, take the woman by force and cart away firearms and ammunition by using the tear gas.

He said that the efforts to repel the surging youth brigands by shooting of tear gas into the air did not have any effect.

“At this point, the DPO and his men were constrained to use their firearms as a matter of last resort and in line with Force Order 237.

“In the ensuing melee, eight of the hoodlums were arrested while others escaped. One locally made pistol with one unexpended and some expended cartridges, cutlasses, 15 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, dagger, charms and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from the suspects.

“Furthermore, during the mop up of the area, one of the hoodlums who wore a red shirt with an inscription “Emma bullet”, later identified as Emmanuel Chukwu ‘m’, found with gunshot injury which he sustained during the fracas, was rushed to the Mainland General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

“The corpse was thereafter deposited at the hospital’s Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

“Sequel to the above, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State has ordered the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to carry out a full scale investigation into the matter and come up with a detailed report .” the statement read.

  • Lagos CP to Ambode: Declare state of emergency on cultism

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, on Thursday appealed to the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to declare a state of emergency on cultism.

He also said the state House of Assembly should be prevailed upon to propose stiffer punishment for cultism, decrying the recruitment of primary school children into various cult groups in the state.

Edgal spoke at Badagry while receiving 139 youths, who renounced their membership of various cult groups and surrendered arms, ammunition in their possessions.

According to Edgal, the police will adopt the carrot and stick approach in tackling cultism, describing the vice as an instigator to other violent crimes.

While those who voluntarily relinquished arms, ammunition and denounced cultism would be rehabilitated and taken through vocational trainings and offered employments, Edgal said those caught by law enforcement agents would get maximum punishment for the offence.

The police commissioner also called for more surveillance of the borders to prevent arms smuggling into the state.

He said: “I want to use this opportunity to call on the government to declare a state of emergency on cultism. The House of Assembly needs to also award stiffer punishment for cultists because the practice of initiating our children in primary schools is worrisome.

“We will use the carrot and stick approach in fighting cultism in Lagos. The carrot aspect involved encouraging youths in all communities in the state to voluntarily relinquish cultism and surrender arms and ammunition in their possessions.

“We are also calling on local government chairmen and others who have the capacity to take these youths and give them vocational training so that they can come back and be reintegrated into the society and earn decent living.

“From the list handed over to me, I have seen that some of these repentant cultists are university graduates. Some have higher diplomas. Some are teachers and artisans. These are people who should be contributing meaningfully to the growth of society.

“I am happy as CP in Lagos to receive them back to the fold of responsible, decent and law abiding citizens of Badagry. Before us are weapons of mass destruction voluntarily surrendered. We have AK47 rifles, pump action rifles, several locally made pistols, axes, cutlasses, AK47 and pump action ammunition, among others.

“The weapons would be taken to public armoury and would be well documented. All those who have renounced membership of different cult groups would be profiled, their biometrics taken and files opened for them so that we can track their progress.

“The local government chairman has assured me he would do everything within his power to ensure those without skills and qualifications are trained and have means of livelihood. Those with degrees would be offered some forms of employment.

“I am happy my colleagues from other security agencies are here. I call on us to join hands to police our borders seriously and prevent arms and ammunition from entering into our communities because they would be sold to our youths and criminal gangs, who would use them to commit crimes.

“I thank the traditional leaders and all those who made this possible. I call on other parts of the state to emulate Ikorodu and Badagry. It would be my pride to be invited by other communities especially Mushin, Oshodi, Ajegunle, Isolo, Ijora-Badia for similar purpose. The war against cultism and drug peddling should not be left for the police because the police alone cannot win it.”

Over 200 youths renounce cultism in Lagos

More than 200 youths on Monday surrendered arms and ammunition after renouncing their membership of different cult groups in Ikorodu area of Lagos.

The ceremony, which took place at the palace of the Ikorodu monarch, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, was attended by the state Police Commissioner, Edgal Imohimi and heads of other security agencies.

According to Imohimi, arms surrendered by the youths included 15 locally made long guns, 30 bullets, 11 cutlasses, four axes, four double-barrel guns, five short locally made pistols and a sword.

He said the development was as a result of the community policing and community partnership put together by the state police command.

He assured the repented cultists that the command would do all within its might to ensure Ikorodu was rid of criminality.

Imohimi said: “Today, we are in Ikorodu at the instance of our royal father and his lieutenants to take over these arms and ammunition that belong to members of major cult groups who renounced such confraternity.

“We have identified leaders of Aiye, Aye and Buccaneer, who have come out with their over 200 members to give up arms.  What is happening here is that jointly, we are making history. All these weapons have been voluntarily handed over by cultists who have renounced membership and have pledged to build Ikorodu and allow peace and security to reign.

“These arms are weapons of destruction and I am happy you volunteered to relinquish them. They would be sent to police armoury. I heard that there are still few persons in your midst, who do not want to join this drive to shun cultism. Be vigilant and do not allow them to carry out their activities in Ikorodu.

“I have told my men here to partner you in order to arrest such persons. I know you have fears and uncertainties but I can assure that there is a process. Your renunciation is the first step. Thereafter, the oba will approach the local government chairman to train you in vocational skills before your reintegration into the society.

“There would also be opportunities for soft loans to establish your vocational trade. Ikorodu is the fastest growing part of Lagos and the world is concerned about what is happening here.

“I hereby call on youths of other communities in Lagos to renounce cultism. I am also appealing to youths to shun hard drugs. If you take these drugs, you won’t have a bright future. Do not allow drug dealers to rob you of your future.

“Anywhere you find a drug dealer in Ikorodu, report to the police and the person would be arrested.”

    Father denies allegation

Adefemi said: “I am shocked at the allegations. I am innocent. I have never done it and I will never do it. I heard that my children accused me.of raping their sister. They never said it before me.

“I thought that they would bring them before me and ask them so that I can hear it from them directly but the police did not.

“You should know they are children and can be lured with biscuit or sweet to say anything. I do not know where that came from. I know I usually beat my kids when they do wrong. I do not think that is an offence because I would want my children to grow up badly.

“Their mother left over a year ago and since then, I have been with them. I do bricklaying job sometimes, other times, I work as a conductor to provide our daily bread.”

The police boss said Adefemi separated from his wife over alleged spousal abuse.

Imohimi said: “He inflicted grievous injury in the private part of the child as a result.of forceful penetration. Two older siblings of the survivor were not luckier as Olusegun Adefemi regularly abused by beating them with cane each time they resisted him from penetrating them.theoufh their anus.

“The girl has been taken to Mirabel Medical Centre for examination and treatment while her siblings have been placed in temporary home. The suspect would be charged to court at the end of investigation.”

Foreign Embassies and High Commissions on Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Thursday described as security threat, the popular Nigerian Army Mammy Market operated in the neighbourhood.

They also condemned the activities of touts crowding the parking lot near the Ahmadu Bello Way end of the crescent to scout customers.

Their complaints were tabled before the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, during a joint visit to the command headquarters in Ikeja.

According to the diplomats, their concern was a fallout of a recent security breach at the German Embassy in Victoria Island.

They appealed to the police commissioner to close the market and rid the area of criminals that were attracted to the neighbourhood by the Mammy Market.

Receiving the delegates comprising representatives from British High Commission, United States,

German, Italian and The Netherlands embassies, Imohimi reminded them that the place was a military zone and the police would not conduct any operations there without collaborating with the military.

He urged the diplomats to have at least three armed policemen at all times within their premises, adding that a common ground be constructed for printers and photocopiers to be used by visa applicants.
