  • Police arrest 26 armed robbery suspects in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command said on Wednesday that 26 armed robbery suspects were arrested across the state in the last one week.

The state Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, disclosed this during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja.

He said the suspects were apprehended at Ejigbo, Abule-Egba and Yaba areas of the state, adding that their arrests were possible because of existing partnerships with communities.

Edgal said one Ifeanyi Eze and Innocent Nwabugo were arrested at Ejigbo, adding that N48,000 and a mobile phone were recovered from them.

He said police operatives arrested three “one-chance” operators that used a Vanagon Bus marked LND463XU and painted in Lagos State commercial transport colour at Awori Bus Stop in Abule-Egba.

Identifying the suspects as Emmanuel Eno, Samson Adigun and Timothy Ekpo, the police commissioner said the vehicle, two number plates, three phones, one hand chain and four wristwatches were recovered from them.

He said raiders attached to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Yaba, arrested two suspected car thieves, Emeka Eze and Okwudili Emmanuel, who stole a Honda Accord Saloon car marked LND192CA.

He said the raiders acted on a tip-off and caught up with the suspects along ECOWAS Route on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway while attempting to sell the car.

Edgal said: “When the car was searched, one CAC ID Card bearing Akinkunmi Olutunbi with telephone number 08025770333 was found inside.

“The owner was contacted through the mobile number and he identified himself as the owner of the car, saying it was snatched from him at gunpoint along Third Mainland Bridge inward Makoko, Yaba.

“The suspects confessed during interrogation that they snatched the car and other vehicles. Investigation is on to recover other stolen vehicles.”

  • Lagos CP probes teenager’s killing during protest

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Edgal Imohimi, has ordered investigation into the alleged killing of a 16-year-old boy, Emmanuel Chukwu, by the police.

Chukwu allegedly died from gunshot wounds on March 11 when policemen from Ijora -Badia Division were dispersing angry protesters who confronted the police for rescuing a suspected female kidnapper.

The State Police Spokesman, Chike Oti, said the Command had ordered immediate investigation into the matter.

Oti said: “On the 11th of March, 2018, a distress call was received that a suspected kidnapper was about being lynched by irate mob at Afolabi Street, Ijora-Badia.

“The police mobilised some patrol teams to rescue the woman under attack. On getting to the scene, the police team discovered that the woman had been stripped, she was helpless and at the verge of imminent death.

“The team braved the odds and rescued the woman from the jaws of death.

“The mob comprising youths, cult boys and other miscreants who were armed with dangerous weapons stormed the police station and attempted to whisk away the woman who was already in police protective custody.

“They fired sporadically into the police station, throwing stones, petrol bombs and other missiles to overawe the police and forcefully take away the woman whom they accused of kidnapping a yet to be identified person and dispense jungle judgement on her even when the accusation against her had not been established.”

According to Oti, the police resisted the attempt by the mob to raze the police station, take the woman by force and cart away firearms and ammunition by using the tear gas.

He said the efforts to repel the surging youth brigands by shooting of tear gas into the air did not have any effect.

“At this point, the DPO and his men were constrained to use their firearms as a matter of last resort and in line with Force Order 237.

“In the ensuing melee, eight of the hoodlums were arrested while others escaped. One locally made pistol with one unexpended and some expended cartridges, cutlasses, 15 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, dagger, charms and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from the suspects.

“Furthermore, during the mop up of the area, one of the hoodlums who wore a red shirt with an inscription ‘Emma bullet’ later identified as Emmanuel Chukwu ‘m’, found with gunshot injury which he sustained during the fracas, was rushed to the Mainland General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

“The corpse was thereafter deposited at the hospital’s Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

“Sequel to the above, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State has ordered the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to carry out a full scale investigation into the matter and come up with a detailed report.”

Wanted Badoo kingpin petitions IGP, others over properties

The suspected Badoo kingpin, Alaka Abayomi, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, over the closure of his business premises by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) few days ago.

Alaka said the sealing off of his properties by the government agency was based solely on the security report given to the Lagos State government by the state Commissioner of Police, Edgar Imohimi, alleging him to be a Badoo kingpin.

He described the action as unlawful and breach of his fundamental human rights.

Copies of the petition have been sent to the office of IGP, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the National Human Right Commission of Nigeria, the Police Service Commission, the Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs amongst others.

Alaka, who spoke through his Principal Counsel, Barr. Tunde Ojehomon at a press briefing in Ibadan, Oyo State, said the common request in the petition is that an independent investigating team be set up to look into the allegation against him.

The counsel, in a statement issued at the end of the press briefing, said: “The last time the case came up which was 12/12/17, the court adjourned the suit for definite hearing to early this year. It is shocking how the respondents have again come to the public declaring our client, applicant before a superior court of record wanted over allegation of Badoo cult killing on the same subject matter in FHC/L/CS/1503/17.

“As though the above was not enough, in the early hours of 3rd of January, 2018 the business premises of our client were again sealed by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) based solely on the security report made available to the Lagos State Government by CP Edgar Imohimi alleging our client to be a Badoo kingpin.

“Even though we are putting our papers together to seek legal remedy against what we perceive as unlawful sealing of our client’s property, we have resolved to resort to and exhaust all available administrative remedies in the light of the recent events that have concretized our suspicion that CP Edgar Imohimi has a personal axe to grind with our client.

“To this end we have written petitions against the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, in the person of CP Edgar Imohimi. The common request we made in all the petitions is that an independent investigative team be set up to look into the allegation against our client that is free from CP Edgar Imohimi’s control or supervision.

“It is our earnest belief that once the above request is ensured, the truth about this case will come to the fore. We therefore urge the public to remain calm and be wary of antics that will be prejudicial to their minds pending the outcome of a proper investigation.

“We further urge the officers of the Nigerian Police Force to operate within the confines of the rule of law and refrain from acts that will be prejudicial to the interest of our client and the society at large until the court determine the case before it.”

IPAC urges parties to shun violence

The Lagos State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council ( IPAC ), has urged political parties to steer clear of violence during and after the Eti -Osa Constituency 1 election on Saturday.

The council’s state Public Relations Officer ( PRO ), Mallam Shakirideen Olofin, gave this advice in an interview on Friday in Lagos.

Reports that the election is to fill the vacant seat, following the death of the lawmaker representing the area, Mr Kazeem Alimi on July 18.

He urged all the participating parties to conduct their supporters peacefully so as to ensure the successful conduct of the poll.

Olofin explained that in any election, there would be winners and losers, and therefore, urged political parties to approach the exercise with the spirit of sportsmanship.

“IPAC enjoins all participating parties to comport themselves properly before, during and after the bye election”.

Olofin said that the state had been noted for peace and urged all stakeholders to ensure that the bye-election was a reflection of that notion.

He said the deployment of a new Commissioner of Police, Mr Edgar Imohimi and a new Resident Electoral Commissioner ( REC ), Mr Sam Oulmekun, to the state was timely.

Olofin said that IPAC welcomed both men while the state was looking up to them for the peaceful and fair conduct of the poll.

The PRO also urged residents of Eti-Osa with Permanent Voter Card ( PVC ) to come out en-masse and vote for candidates of their choice during the election.

He said that IPAC would render any required support for the successful conduct of the poll.
