Edo 2016: PFN sues for peace

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has urged political parties and their candidates for the September 10 governorship election to embrace peace in their quest to govern the state.

It said good governance should be the trust of religious groups, policy makers, political leaders and the electorates.

The religious body noted that development, employment, education, equity in sharing of power and resources, moderate lifestyle and accessibility to the people, periodic evaluation and town hall meeting should be prioritize by the governorship candidates if elected.

Edo State Director of Social Security Outreach of PFN, Professor Anthony Ogbeide, stated this at an interactive session with some party candidates.

Ogbeide urged the candidates to be respectful in their campaign statements as well as desist from lies and blackmail.

Ogbeide noted that the meeting was to streamline ideas, refine methodologies for the interest of the people at large

According to him, “There should be no campaign of calumny. Use the campaign to respectfully unveil your plans to the people you want to govern. It is not a period of accusations and counter accusations and blackmail.

“Make the voting field peaceful without scaring away voters.  Accept defeat when it is so obvious and develop the team spirit for successful governance, enduring peace and security in the state “. He said.

Godwin Obaseki of the APC told PFN that he want to be Edo next governor to put smiles, give hope and transform the lives of people of the state.

Obaseki denies plots to islamize the state.

He said, “The gain I am expecting is the smile on the faces of my people, giving hope to put people. Yes I will get gain but the gain is being able to transform the lives of our people.

“When we came to Edo, they said there was no money to build roads, schools or even provide basis amenities for the people. Every society has enough money for its basic needs but may not have money for extravagant greed”.

“I am a Christian, I grew up knowing the crucifix and the Bible and it is right for me to promote my faith. We have to understand that there are certain things government can’t do because people can go to court and challenge it.”

    • ‘Edo doesn’t owe banks’

Edo State All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Godwin Obaseki, has declared that he is his own man.

He dismissed insinuations he is a puppet of outgoing Governor Adams Oshiomole.

He fingered those who have lived off the state’s resources as architects of the claims.

Obaseki, who spoke in an interview in Benin City, the Edo State capital, explained that his vision is to build on what the APC government has done in the last eight years.

The governorship hopeful explained he was part of the main architects for the design of the current administration.

He ruled out doing anything radically different from what Oshiomole is doing as governor.

According to him: “When I hear people talk about remote control yes, if I am going to be remote controlled to build more roads is that not good remote control?

“If I am going to be remote controlled to build more schools, to create jobs (is that not good remote controlled?)

“But I cannot be remote controlled to take public funds and distribute to people who are not adding value.”

He went on: “So the narratives you are hearing about Obaseki not being his own man…I don’t see myself doing anything radically different.

“That’s the challenge. That’s the politics. That’s the argument. I am my own man.”

On claims by the Peoples Democratic Party that the current administration ran the state into debts, Obaseki said Edo does not owe any bank.

He explained the negligible outstanding loans of Edo are not different from what obtain in other states.

He maintained loans taken by the state can be paid off within the shortest time especially with the increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

According to Obaseki: “If you go to the website of the Debt Management Office and check the loans of states, Edo’s total loan outstanding is less than N50 billion.

“Our total tax every year is about N24 billion. In fact this year, our total revenue from IGR alone is about N25 billion.

“So even if we didn’t do anything, two years of our IGR will pay off our total debts outstanding.

“So when people talk about debt I imagine where are they coming from? The interesting thing is that we do not owe a bank one dime.

“The type of debt we have is a type of debt states and governments should have. These are long dated debts.

“By next year we’ll finish paying the first bond we took. The rest we’ve taken from multilateral agencies like the World Bank facilities, which is almost like a dash, a grant with 10 to 20 years moratorium and less than 2% interest.

“So we don’t have that debt burden. We’ve thought about it very carefully and we have demonstrated to lenders that we are responsible borrowers.

“And that is why we’ve gotten the short of term loan we now have,” Obaseki stated.

Edo 2016: APC certain of victory

The Publicity committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate has advised former members of the party who found themselves in the People’s Democratic Party  (PDP) to see the handwriting on the wall, retrace their steps and return to the winning party APC in their own interest as the party is certain to win the September polls.

A member of the committee Elder Sam Eboigbe in a statement said all people who are conversant with Edo politics should appreciate the recent prediction of the leader of the Otu-Edoseghe group , Chief David Edebiri  about the September governorship polls.

He said for a group that cuts across the seven local government areas of the state and whose leader is known statewide as the oracle, the veracity of his predictions which are well known, cannot be doubted.

Faulting claims that the people of Edo Central were not in support of the APC candidate, Eboigbe said that it is obvious from the statement credited to a foremost Esan traditional and Onojie of Opoji that such claims is not true.

“In Edo central the Onojie of Opoji congratulated the Comrade governor for the peaceful primary of the APC that produced a very viable, competent, intelligent and a broad minded person in Godwin Obaseki who has been chairman of his economic team”.

He said, “the Onojie particularly commended the Comrade governor and the people of the state for not allowing sentiments to override the interest of the people”.

“At the palace of the Onojie of Irrua it was another unprecedented warm reception for the governor and the candidate and his deputy and the governor told the monarch that Obaseki is not new to governance as he has been with him from day one”.

Eboigbe who echoed the prayers of the Onojie of Ubiaja who presented an Igbulu traditional dress usually reserved for personalities with dignity and love said it is obvious that APC will sweep the entire votes in Edo Central or Esanland.

  • Edo 2016: Group calls for strengthening of Electoral Act

As the September 10 gubernatorial election in Edo State approaches, a call has been made for the strengthening of the nation’s Electoral Act with a view to discouraging election rigging.

Dr. Oyebade Olowogboyega, made the call in Benin, the state capital on Tuesday, at the lunching of a one man, one woman, one vote campaign, organised by the Edo State chapter of the Democracy Vanguard.

He advocated implementation of the 1958 Electoral Act, which stipulated five year jail term for politicians convicted for rigging elections.

“The 1958 electoral act that was left by the colonial masters had a provision that criminalised election rigging or election malpractice. Whoever was caught and convicted would be banned for five years and would not benefit from holding any political office or any sensitive post in the federation.

“But that has been watered down in the electoral act, and until we ban whoever is convicted of election malpractice, we will never have free and fair election in this country‎,” he said.

Olowogboyega noted that Nigeria has perpetually failed to address the issue of election rigging during successive revisions of the nation’s Constitution, but has watered down penalties of election rigging and has made election rigging lucrative.

Spartan Republic where a thief is punished, not for stealing but for allowing himself to be caught.

In his speech, the National Coordinator of Democracy Vanguard, Comrade Adeola Soetan, noted that it is a good thing that everyone wants a free, fair and credible election.

Alluding to the basic definition of democracy, Comrade Soetan said the people are supreme in the democratic process.

‎ He said the organisation will educate the electorate against voting on the basis of ethnicity or any other basis, but to vote based on their conscience.

According to him, the essence of the programme is to ‎bring all stakeholders in the Edo governorship election together with a view ‎ensuring that a free, fair, credible and conclusive election is achieved on September 10.

‎Earlier in his welcome address, the state General Secretary of Democracy Vanguard, Mr. Mike Iyobosa Okuns, said the essence of the programme was to educate the electorate on the importance of free and fair election.

He said for election to be free and fair, every eligible electorate must be willing to go out to the polling centres, get accredited, vote and ensure that his vote counts.

‎Iyobosa Okuns said the we must henceforth ensure that all elections are free, fair, credible and conclusive.

Speaking on the role of police in a free, fair, credible and conclusive election, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, who was represented by SP Okafor Moses, assured that the police, in collaboration with other sister security agencies, will ensure election devoid of crisis.

According to him, arrangements have been put in place to ensure adequate deployment of security personnel to ensure ‎safety of INEC officials, the electorate‎ and other stakeholders.

  • Edo 2016: Between Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu

Edo 2016: Between Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu

HISTORY plays a role and shapes our future. Today, I share with you my interactions with the two leading candidates for the Edo State gubernatorial election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Godwin Obaseki. Firstly, it was around 2001-2002 that I first met Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. We had gone to appeal to him concerning the closure of Ambrose Alli University (AAU). For those of you who cannot remember, AAU was closed down after students legitimately protested against management’s high-handedness and, in the process, cornered a Coca Cola truck.

We asked for his intervention to support the re-opening of our school. He told us that AAU students were bad; that we were thieves, cultists and never-do-well. Based on that flawed generalisation, he said he supported the decision of the Governor on the closure of AAU as a punishment for our misconduct and “sins”.

While the government of the day was using the conduct of the students as an excuse, the real reason for the closure was lack of funds to pay staff of AAU. As you all know – and as a direct consequence of this action – we, the students, at that time lost over two years of our lives to this unnecessary and unwarranted closure. That memory never left me!

Again in 2004, after I was elected as President of the Law Students Association, I embarked on an audacious and daring task to Honor our First and Foremost Dean of the Faculty of Law, the Late Professor D.O. Aihie. The Late Aihie – as Dean and, later, Vice Chancellor of the then Bendel State University (now AAU), saw to the formation and growth of the Faculty of Law.

His legacies and achievements are overwhelming. As at that time, it was 10 years post death, so we thought about hosting a lecture and dinner in his honor. We wanted to do this so that the labor of our heroes past will not be in vain. We wanted to show others – his family, the school community and so on that we were proud of his time as Dean and, later, Vice Chancellor.

Several Speakers were selected for this event and Osagie Ize-Iyamu was one of them. He was selected because of his profession as a lawyer and then a possible role model for would-be lawyers. As President, I personally went to his office with an invitation letter, and also asking for his support towards the program.

After waiting for several hours, he came out, reviewed the letter, asked questions and then told me that he didn’t think the Late Aihie achieved anything worth celebrating. I explained to him that the very foundation of excellence at the Law Faculty was laid by this same Aihie, and that – in any case – this was worth celebrating. In fact, our theme was “For Our Today, He Gave Us His Yesterday”. At that point he lost his temper and asked me to leave his office.

As far as he was concerned, who was I to argue with an SSG? He made me sadder than I came in. Not only did he demonize my school, he shattered the legacies of our hero, Aihie. Mind you, the same document I gave to him was the same that I gave to Prof. Sagay, the Ugbesias (who overwhelmingly supported the event), Tony Anenih, etc. They were, indeed, very delighted; at last, someone had found the courage to honor an author of excellence.

Now fast-forward to 2007, I graduated from the Law School and emerged as the Law School All-Time Best, breaking all records previously held before me. I graduated with a First Class Honor, the first student from AAU and Edo State to make that history at the Nigerian Law School. Yes, I was from AAU, a school that Ize-Iyamu and his government characterized as a school for thieves, thugs, prostitutes and the never-do-well.

That year, my set at the Law School will never forget the standard set by AAU students at the Nigeria Law School. Even Lucky Igbinedion, the then Governor who claimed AAU was no good, shut down our school, made us lose two years of our school lives, praised my success as part of his achievements in Office.

In November 2007 the Late President of EGHOSA OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION (EGHOBA), Dr. Ekhator of Blessed Memory, invited me to receive an award. At the award ceremony, I was honored alongside Godwin Obaseki. That was the first time I met Godwin Obaseki in person although I had heard about him, particularly because I was working in a leading law and had the opportunity to be the lawyer advising the buyers of some assets where AFRINVEST, a company founded by Obaseki, was the financial adviser.

In fact, at that time, the major Financial Advisers on big-ticket transactions were either Afrinvest or Vetiva Capital. After I received my award, Obaseki, in spite of his wealth and standing, walked over to where I was with humility, congratulated me and gave me his card and personal email address.

In his words, “would you like to join my team? Send me your resume before Wednesday so I can get an interview scheduled for you”. He didn’t bother himself about the school I attended or who I was or where I came from. Rather, he saw excellence and wanted to reward excellence. I was invited for the interview, hired and then I turned it down after I spoke with my mentor about my plans for my future.

The offer was mouth-watering, and even higher than the pay I was receiving then, with perks that would drive you crazy. Obaseki called me some days later when he heard that I turned down the offer. He asked me if I wanted more pay so that I will join his team, then I explained to him about my plans and he welcomed the idea then wished me good luck. After that time, I saw him several times at meetings and public functions.

Please, I put before you two candidates; one Ize-Iyamu who had the opportunity to reward excellence but rather chose to demonize AAU in order to appease his pay masters and destroyed every fabric of our hero, Prof. Aihie, and the other Obaseki, who had the opportunity and took it to reward excellence. I want to leave you to your choices.

Police denies carrying out ‘politically motivated arrest’

The Edo State Police Command has denied allegations that it has been carrying out ‘politically motivated arrest’.

State Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, Chief Felix Imosili, had accused the police of increasing political tension by allegedly reluctant to arrest persons involved in pulling down the party’s campaign banners and posters in parts of the state.

Chief Imosili said PDP leaders were frequently called police stations to bail persons whose arrest he said were politically motivated.

Imosili stated that the Police stopping of the PDP campaign at Igueben local government because the governor was coming to the area for APC campaign was capable of creating political tension.

In his reaction, State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, said those arrested by the police included some members of the National Youth Service Corps caught carrying out voter registration at the residence of a politician in Fugar, Estako Central local government.

Ezike said the politician was arrested and charged to court.

He disclosed that some persons were caught with INEC’s voter register and they were released after clarification from INEC officials that document could be downloaded from the Internet.

The police commissioner said the PDP campaign rally at Ekpon in Igueben was cancelled because Speaker Justin Okonoboh first applied to holding political gathering in the area.

Edo 2016: 500 quit Accord Party

About 500 members of the Accord Party in Edo State have opted to quit the party over comments by governorship candidate of the party, Don Pedro Obaseki, that the party will support the candidacy of Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu of the People’s Democratic Party.

Among those left the Accord Party are some members of the state executive led by its Assistant Secretary General, Mr. Etionosa Edo.

Edo told newsmen that they would rather work for Godwin Obaseki rather than Pastor Ize-Iyamu.

He said they were taken aback during the visit of Pastor Ize-Iyamu and PDP chieftains when Don Pedro said they should support the PDP to stop Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Obaseki.

According to him, “He did not tell us he was withdrawing from the Accord Party. He said we should support Ize-Iyamu because he cannot work with Godwin Obaseki.

“We try to cover for him when he said it was because of the case in court that his name was not published. The truth is that he has no money to pay for the form even though Isibor went to court.”

Ize-Iyamu laments state of Afuze Sports Centre

The PDP governorship candidate in the September 10, 2016 election in Edo state, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has said it was shameful for the College of Physical Education, Afuze‎ also known as Afuze Sports Centre to be left to rot under the All Progressive Congress administration.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu said the Afuze Sports Centre helped put Edo on the Sporting map of the world.

He said he would reactivate and reposition the college if elected as governor at the September 10 governorship election.

Speaking at a campaign rally at Otuo, Afuze and Ihievbe in Owan East local government area as part of his campaign tour of Edo North,  Pastor Ize-Iyamu said as part of his Simple Agenda, a PDP government will restore the lost glory of the Afuze sports centre.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu promised to give out bursaries and scholarships to indigent students as well as create jobs for the teeming population of Owan youths and other Edo youths.

He said, “Enough is enough. Oshiomhole has treated Owan people as if they don’t exist. The support you gave him has he given you anything in return? This time around if they offer you money to vote for APC take it and vote against them.”

Ize-Iyamu asked Oshiomhole to account for the N1.5trillion it has so far received from statutory allocations alone.

Some members of the APC in Owan East led by Chief Omon Ebegua defected to the PDP.

State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, said Oshiomhole displayed his clannish nature by nominating somebody from Uzairue to be running mate to the APC candidate, Godwin Obaseki.

Orbih said APC killed all the industries like the Bendel Breweries and the Uromi Cassava plant.
