    • APC’ll claim PDP losses as its gains – Oshiomhole

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo  has expressed  confidence in its chances of winning the upcoming governorship election in the state, anchoring its reasons on the seeming disarray among the ranks of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP)  in the state.

An Abuja Federal High Court, on Thursday declared invalid the primary election that produced the governorship candidate of the PDP, Mr Asuen Ighodalo, citing the disenfranchisement of authentic delegates of the party.

The APC also said that besides the crisis in the PDP, its candidate (Ighodalo) is detached from the people of the state, a factor the party (APC) said gives its own candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, whom it described as a grassroots politician, the upper ground at the polls.

Speaking to journalists at the State House, Abuja, yesterday, the leader of the APC in Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh, cited various reasons why the September 2024 election in the state is up for their party to take.

Senator Oshiomhole, who spoke first, said the party visited President Bola Tinubu with the candidate of the APC and his running mate, Hon Dennis Idahosa, to give an update of the party’s campaign activities.

Oshiomhole denied insinuations that the crisis that emanated from the invalidation of the PDP governorship primary was orchestrated by the APC, pointing out that it was an internal crisis of the ruling party, which had nothing to do with the APC.

Reacting to allegations that the PDP primary election crisis was orchestrated by the APC, Oshiomhole said “I think you should dismiss that because this is PDP versus PDP and you know that by the law, another party cannot go into intra-party conflicts in court. So if it is convenient for them to explain that, you can dismiss it without asking me.

“The fact that there had been division in Edo before their primaries and after their primaries is an open secret, and the issues in dispute are also very open. The PDP legacy group complained that the man they gave their master bedroom has completely chased them out of the building and now they’re under the rain and as we speak they are still trying to settle.

“Those who couldn’t find accommodation, we picked them one by one and don’t forget that those in that Osadebe Avenue were my own creation in the sense that I supported Obeseki to become governor and so I have people who still have affection for me.

“Edo people won’t forget in  hurry what I did when I was governor and those of them who didn’t quite readily appreciate now compare the past with the present. So if they have disputes or disagreement which they couldn’t settle and they choose to settle it in the court and the court nullifies the process…

“I mean, you read the judgment, so it’s not me. If you know Dan Orbih, the leader of Legacy Group, he was my fierce critic when I was in government, so what power do I have? How can we, a non-state group, have power to influence  seasoned politicians to move against themselves?

“So this is purely PDP intra-party, and I think the lesson is very clear, namely that parties must be encouraged to obey the laws that regulate the conduct of primaries, and that rules are meant to be obeyed if you formulate your constitution.

“It is the base of the contract between party members. Now, the Electoral Act is meant to ensure that everybody played the game within the rules,” he said.

On the purpose of the visit and how the parties stand for the upcoming election, Senator Oshiomhole said “we went with the candidate and the running mate to  the President to give him an update on the campaigns going on,  what we are doing and the fact that we are harvesting more and more people every day decamping.

“I’m surprised that rather than speculating about who will face what,  are you not a witness to the fact that the entire PDP in Egor a month ago, all the wards  decamped to APC. Just last week in my local government, the remaining remnants of PDP decamped to APC and across Edo Central, the same thing. Where have you heard the APC people decamping to? People are jumping out because the umbrella is leaking and this is rainy season”, Oshiomhole said.

Also speaking, Minister of Niger Delta Development, Momoh, further spoke of the field advantage of the APC over the PDP and Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, saying his party’s candidate already had Edo North and Central Senatorial Districts locked down, adding that the South Senatorial District would be the only battle ground where the three parties will share votes.

  • Edo 2024: PDP planning technical rigging – Emokpaire

Edo 2024: PDP planning technical rigging – Emokpaire

Chief Ibrahim Bamidele Emokpaire, is an astute politician, a technocrat, a human rights, and justice lawyer, Chairman and Convener, Progressive Solidarity for Asiwaju. He was also the Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the United Kingdom Chapter and one of the contenders for the National Chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before he eventually stepped down for the former chairman of the APC, Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

In this interview with Gbenga Aderanti, he talks about the forthcoming governorship election in Edo, Obi’s visit to Atiku and also looks at how the ruling APC has fared in the first year. Excerpts.

What do you make of the recent visit of Obi Atiku?

There have been lots of speculations of what transpired between these two individuals, we both know that these two men are obviously ambitious, they want to preside over this country’s affairs at all cost and they are ready to go to any length, to carry out their ambition. There have been a lot of speculations about whether or not they are coming together or not as a unit to contest in 2027, so, merely seeing them together, 2027 comes to mind for everybody, and they begin to look at the possibility of the two coming together.

If the two of them decide to come together, won’t that be a threat to the APC?

Well, they had already expired politically.  I think Obi feels he is still very young and he is just coming up, but I wonder how a 64-year-old will think he is very young.  Looking at his records, he has contested before as Vice President under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He also contested under the Labour Party as President. These individuals, we have seen them all, and we know how both of them have used divide and rule. One of them was playing ethnic cards as much as he could, and blackmailing people to get to achieve his aspiration while the other was using religion.

These were the tactics they used, and honestly, Nigerians did not fall for the antics of these two men. Even when the issue of Muslim-Muslim heated up the polity during the last elections, our party was still able to work hard, and we were able to produce a formidable president in the name of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We believe that come 2027, Atiku or Obi will not pose any threat even if they come together under the umbrella of the PDP or Labour Party, or whatever alliance or association they might form.  We don’t need to take this as a threat, though we would take it seriously.

The problem for both men lies in who’s going to back down for the other. Both of them are ruthlessly ambitious, and their supporters, especially that of Peter Obi are cutthroat supporters who see Peter Obi more than a presidential candidate. They may decide to abandon the ‘Obidient’ ship or go neutral if Peter Obi decides to become Atiku’s running mate a la 2019. This would then play into the hands of the APC and President Tinubu.

Any party out there that is ready to contest we know they are out there to oust the ruling party. We would do everything possible to give them fair play, and we would contest fairly, believing that our party, APC, will prevail.

How would you describe President Tinubu’s one year in office?

It has been a Herculean task, but he has been able to work his way through, irrespective of the challenges the country is facing. The current administration has been faced with enormous challenges. Nigeria is a peculiar country where the problems you campaigned to end get ambushed by fresh problems every day after you become president or governor, which thereby expands and compounds the problems in geometric proportions

We see a turbulent economy worldwide, where the cost of living becomes untamable. We are not insulated from the problems associated with everyday living. We are part of the world economy and we know the removal of the petrol subsidy would disrupt the perception of the administration unfairly. However, the subsidy needed to be removed. It was a situation of talk and die, or don’t talk and die for Nigeria. Either way was a devil’s alternative.

Having said that, I would say a lot has been achieved and reasonable efforts are still being made in the sense that he was able to stand firm on the subsidy removal and did everything possible to ameliorate the hardship this has brought on Nigerians in the area of infrastructure like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the many roads and rail projects commissioned in the FCT Abuja. Even though I believe there’s still a lot to be done in the humanitarian approach of the President’s strategy to cushion the effects of the economic hardships facing Nigeria, I believe that by next year, things will take better shape in the economy.

I believe the President needs an inverted food sustainability programme from the grassroots where people can afford food. Food affordability will reduce most of the tension in the economy caused by inflation and subsidy removal.

Then again, we have to applaud the President for his social welfare efforts, especially the Students’ Loan scheme. The bill has been passed, and it has become law. The Students’ Loan Scheme will go a long way to eliminate illiteracy in our nation and help to develop education in the country.

Though the president is mostly touted as a capitalist, he has shown that welfare is a key focus of his administration. This is an administration that is planning a scheme to expand the scope of NYSC to foster wealth creation for our youths.

At the beginning of this administration, the government floated naira to inflate the economy. Though we are experiencing the teething problems associated with this policy, I believe that in due time, we will have the required stability to sojourn on as a nation.

We also see that within the economic indices, there are signs of improvement within this period.

The president has been able to travel far and wide to attract investors. He has been the chief marketer of Nigeria; he has been selling Nigeria to the rest of the world. He has made the investors see the potential Nigeria possesses. He is working assiduously to make sure Nigeria becomes a greater country again.

President Tinubu has done significantly well amid the enormous challenges we are facing after the removal of the subsidy.

Everybody agreed that the removal of subsidy was a necessity, as they say, no gain without pain. Our economy will bounce back; Nigeria will witness prosperity when this administration’s policies begin to yield fruits.

Many people had high expectations about your party transforming the country…

Give this administration another year; you will begin to see some results of the policies. I believe prosperity will come, and I just have to urge Nigerians to be patient with this administration to see the best way they can individually contribute to the growth and development of this country. Every hand must be on deck, and in due time, there would be a 90-degree turnaround for everybody to see the prosperity we’re all yearning for.

At one point, you wanted to be the National Chairman of the APC, but at the last minute, you stepped down for the former chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, what informed your change of mind?

Yes, I came out to contest for the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, that was in 2018, and at the time I came out, I believed that I had a lot to offer the party. I believed I was better qualified to be the national chairman of the party. I had a vision, and I developed the manifesto. I developed a plan that would foster unity that would bring harmony within the party, and also mentor the youths within the party so that the youths would be able to play a role within the party and they would now mature into political ascension, I put that in my manifesto and went about it.  I believe that as a party, we should partner with the administration; the party would be carried along in terms of policy making, and policy delivery, and also to actually defend our policy because if we carry people along in policies, they will help in defending the policies.

As a party whatever becomes the administration, if it is successful, the party will be praised for it, if it is not successful, the party will take the blame for that, but when I was asked to step down for Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, after wide consultation with my supporters and members, and we all agreed that lets give the Comrade a chance. He should be able to carry out some aspects of our manifesto, which was handed over to him when I was stepping down.

I was persuaded to step down so that we would have unity in the party. I gave Adams Oshiomhole all my support, all my prayers that he would succeed when I was stepping down, even at the joint press conference we had, I willingly and was happy to step down for him.

You said you participated actively during the 2023 elections, especially, mobilizing for your presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. What exactly did you do?

During the 2023 election, before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu even came out, and declared to be a contestant, I was able to put together a formidable structure across the country. Since I had a semblance of national structure already, I used that to expand and develop a structure where we were able to put together, Progressive Solidarity for Asiwaju (PSA). It was formed in 2021, we were using the platform to urge him to contest because, in the first place, I knew President Bola Tinubu to be somebody who has vision and will be able to deliver for Nigeria. We worked with him in the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as our national leader, I knew the quality of his leadership and I was very hopeful that he would do much much better than anyone in the party.

From day one, we had been campaigning for him all across the 36 states plus the FCT and in the diaspora. We set up offices in the United States, Texas, the United Kingdom, France, Norway, and Scandinavia. All these offices were in the diaspora. We were able to set structures across the globe and we pushed this message, and to God be the glory, he obliged us in January 2023, that he would give himself to serve, and then we started working to make sure he became the candidate.

With our head office in Abuja, we had people coming to us to make sure he emerged as the candidate of the party.  We had delegates from across the state to make sure he became the candidate. We worked with other organizations like TSG and other groups before we became part and parcel of the campaign.

We had structures all across the polling units in the country. We had 4000 members, from polling units at state level. This was how we set up the structure, and we started working on them and we were able to deliver, making sure that he emerged the candidate, and when he became a candidate, the work did not stop, from PSA to the top, we had jingles from day one, campaign banners, campaign flyers, all sorts of things, we had to work so hard to ensure he became the president of this nation, and again to God be the glory, we prevailed.

I’m happy to be among those who worked for the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Our team comprises professionals from the top to the bottom, skillful professionals in different fields. We have artisans and youths as members. In one of the states alone, we have over 4,000 members, all across the polling units in that state alone, which gave the impetus to garner votes across the state as a group to achieve the victory. There is no doubt that our group is ready to give this administration the support it needs because we have worked hard to bring in this administration.

Governorship election will soon be held in Edo State. Do you think your party has a chance?

The answer to that is a resounding yes. Our party has a chance of winning the election. The election is for the APC to win, we know that the present governor, Obaseki, and his team, over the eight years have performed abysmally, there is nothing to show other than the MOU that he is signing all over the place and that is why he has the nickname ‘MOU Governor.’ All that he has done is to weaken the existing institution and also ensure that there is nothing to show in the eight years. That gives us the upper hand

But as a politician and a party man, I wouldn’t want us to take it for granted, that the Edo people will automatically come out and vote for APC, yes, they will come out en mass and vote for the APC, but what I’m hearing right now is that the governor and the PDP  are working to carry out technical rigging, because the governor has a relation that is in INEC IT department and they are planning technical rigging in terms of using electronic technology to ensure that they rig themselves in and rig every other person out, they want to create confusion in the APC’s stronghold.

Our party needs to be vigilant, prepared, and ready, and take nothing for granted. The chance of winning is high for us. This election is for APC to take.

PSA has structures in all the 18 local governments in Edo state. We are teaming up with our party, the APC, to secure Edo State.

I believe that the APC has the best candidate in the person of Monday Okpeholo, among the contestants in Edo State, apart from the fact that the APC left good legacies during the time of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Edo 2024: why NNPP won’t reverse suspension of candidate’

Leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State have said suspension of the governorship candidate, Pastor Azemhe Azena, will not be reversed because of his anti-party activities.

This was contained in a letter by the chairman, Chief Paul Ogwemoh, Secretary John Obeakhemhe; Assistant Youth Leader Vice Ogiriga, and some ward chairmen, addressed to the state leadership. The letter was also copied to the

Southsouth zonal Chairman and the National Chairman for ratification.

The letter accused Azena of publicly endorsing governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo, which ‘caused NNPP shame, ridicule and embarrassment’.

The aggrieved leaders also said Azena has no regard for the party leaders and members in Etsako East which, according to them, caused disunity in the party.

But Azena insisted he remains the standard bearer of NNPP in Edo, and urged the public to disregard his ‘alleged’ suspension.

  • Edo 2024: APC, PDP, INEC trade words over alleged plot to manipulate CVR

Edo 2024: APC, PDP, INEC trade words over alleged plot to manipulate CVR

The main opposition, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, the governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are embroiled in a war of words over alleged plots to manipulate the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and compromise INEC officials ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

Edo APC, through its publicity secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, a lawyer, alleged at a news conference in Benin that the CVR conducted by INEC between May 28 and June 5 was compromised by top officials of the electoral commission to favor PDP’s governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

APC further demanded the immediate deployment of INEC’s Head of ICT in Edo State, accusing the official of collaborating with a female staff member of INEC in Bayelsa State, who is married to a PDP chieftain in Edo State.

The APC claims that this rigging plot is being financed by Governor Godwin Obaseki of the PDP.

It said: “It has become expedient that the APC raises this alarm, and bring to the notice of well-meaning Nigerians, the ignoble plans by PDP’s leaders in Edo State to circumvent and rig the 2024 governorship election, using the CVR as a formidable platform.

“We have on good authority and from multiple sources that some gullible officials of INEC, in most of the 18 local government areas of Edo State, approached the outgoing Edo State government to provide them with ‘logistics’ for the CVR. In anticipation, these unpatriotic INEC officials have promised to allow the PDP unfettered access to INEC’s data-capturing machines.

“APC also found that Governor Obaseki and his Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, INEC’s former Director of voter Education, and Publicity, are working closely with the Head of INEC’s ICT unit so that PDP can manipulate the voter registers and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

“We demand strict compliance with wards’ headquarters as INEC’s designated venues for the CVR, complete restriction of transfer of voters from neighbouring states during the CVR, and rejection of the use of Obaseki’s uniformed thugs as security during the CVR.”

Edo APC also expressed optimism that his standard bearer, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, would emerge victorious at the crucial poll.

Edo Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, however, described the state’s leaders of APC as confused and disgruntled people, without anything to offer.

He said: “We are embarrassed that this is the quality of opposition the APC is offering in Edo State. We are interested in Edo people coming out to register during the CVR exercise. That is what governments do. Also, political parties encourage the people to come out to register, because it is the votes of the people that decide who will govern them.

“When INEC graciously decided to resume registration of voters, we were excited, and as a government, we encouraged our people to come out, because we believe that it is when more people register, then the government can be held accountable.

“Edo residents are satisfied with what we are doing as a government, and they will all come out to vote for us. We are not saying that INEC is totally unbiased, but it has a duty to register voters, and we will give it whatever support it needs. Edo State government has nothing to do with the manipulation of CVR.”

Nehikhare also alleged that APC’s “ignorant” members and leaders in Edo were not prepared for the governorship poll, but rabble-rousing and trying to impress their paymasters.

INEC’s Spokesman in Edo, Timidi Wariowei, in his reaction, reiterated that the electoral umpire held stakeholders’ meeting in Benin on May 16, which was attended by leaders of PDP, APC and the 14 other participating political parties.

Wariowei said: “Our doors are open. It is not good to antagonise the electoral commission, when its officials have not done anything wrong. It is not fair to INEC and its officials. This is not the way to go.

“If anyone has anything to say, the person should come to the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha. It is wrong to dish out those allegations.”

The spokesman of INEC in Edo also assured that the commission would conduct a free, fair, and credible governorship election in the Southsouth state while urging politicians and their supporters not to heat the polity, but to give peace a chance, as they campaign in the 192 wards of Edo.

Edo 2024: PFN, CAN endorse Ighodalo for governor

•Candidate hints of Ecumenical Centre, Thanksgiving Day if elected

The Edo State Chapters of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), on Saturday endorsed the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 21, governorship election in the state, Dr Asue Ighodalo, and his running mate, Barr. Osarodion Ogie, its candidate of choice.

The endorsement and prayer rain for their victory in the coming election was the high point of the PFN’s 2024 Edo State School of Ministry at the PCU-PFN administrative headquarters by Egba Junction along Benin-Auchi Road. The 2024 version of the yearly event which was tagged: ‘Walking in Dominion,’ had over 100 ministers from various ministries in attendance.

Speaking at the occasion, the PFN State Chairman, Pastor Dr. (Mrs) M.O. Agbonifo, said the Christian body was delighted to have Ighodalo and his running mate present with them and that they had no single doubt that they were the best pair for the top job in the state.

She said the PFN had sought God’s face and got assurances that Dr. Asue Ighodalo was without doubt the right man for the job and that he would be the next governor of the state.

She then added a humorous angle to her speech when she declared that another candidate also from Edo Central had approached them with a promise of a Coastal Bus but delivered a Sienna, saying it was akin to a man promising to give a cow but delivered a goat, to which the gathering roared in laughter.

She then wondered if a man who made a promise before God and failed would ever honour any promise he could have made to man.

Also speaking at the event, Edo State First Lady, Mrs Betsy Obaseki, who represented Governor Godwin Obaseki, expressed gratitude to the Church for the immense support given to her husband both in 2016 and 2020 which it has now extended to the candidate of the PDP.

She added, “I correct the sacrilege committed by the other candidate by donating the Coaster bus because we value the church and hold it in very high esteem”.

She was particularly thankful to the PFN and CAN for adopting and accepting Ighodalo as the church’s candidate.

The State CAN Chairman, Apostle General, Dr. Irekpono Omoike, then formally announced the endorsement and led the outpouring of prophetic prayers for the success and victory of Ighodalo and his running mate at the election.

In his acceptance and appreciation speech punctuated with intermittent applause and shouts of approval, Ighodalo expressed gratitude to the Church, saying he was humbled by the gesture. Ighodalo on behalf of himself and Ogie promised a 100KVA generator for the administrative centre.

“Permit me to express my profound gratitude to this august body of Christ. I am humbled by the trust and confidence reposed in me. And I promise you, I won’t disappoint you or let you down.  I wish to say this, too, that Edo State, like some other states, should have an Ecumenical Centre as a further step to fostering unity within the Christian faith in Edo State and we will ensure everybody has the freedom to practice and observe his faith without let or hindrance.

Moreover, we will institute an Edo Thanksgiving Day, a day set aside in the year to thank God for everything. More so, on behalf of myself and my running mate, we will provide a 100KVA generator to power this administrative centre. We will ensure these happen when we come into office,” Ighodalo assured.

In a brief speech, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of the Trinity House Church, Lagos, who is the younger brother of the candidate, emphasized that the election in September transcends partisan contest and that it is essentially a contest between the forces of light and darkness in Edo State.

He said that anyone who had come across his brother would know that he represents light and that he would light up Edo State.

He then pledged N5 million towards fuel for the 100KVA generator promised by his brother.

Edo 2024: PDP, APC, LP, 14 others set for Sept 21 governorship poll

Seventeen parties will contest the September 21 off cycle governorship election in Edo State, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said yesterday.

A statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the parties were the ones that met the deadline for submission of names of elected candidates for the election.

Submission and upload of names of nominated candidates for the poll closed by 6pm on March 24, while the commission is expected to publish names of the candidates on Saturday.

The statement said: “Following the conclusion of primaries, 17 parties have uploaded their candidates’ nomination forms for Edo State Governorship Election by the deadline of 6pm on March 24 when the dedicated portal automatically shut down.

“The particulars of the candidates and their running mates will be published on Saturday, a week from the last date for the submission of nominations as provided in Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“The commission shall publish the personal particulars by displaying copies of Form EC9 along with academic credentials and other documents submitted by each candidate at the state headquarters and 18 local government offices across Edo State.

Ahead of the February 17 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Edo State, two aspirants have joined the race for the party’s ticket for the election scheduled for September 21.

The two brought the number of aspirants jostling for APC ticket to 10.

They are former governor Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor and APC ex-Zonal Organising Secretary (South-South), Blessing Agbohmere.

At press time yesterday, the following aspirants have paid the mandatory N50 million for the expression of interest and nomination forms. They are: Prince Clem Agba, Monday Okpebholo, Lucky Imasuen, Anamero Dekeri, Pastor Osagie Andrew Ize-Iyamu, Gideon Ikhine, Col. David Onabure Imuse, Maj.-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd), Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor and Dr. Blessing Agbohmere.

Addressing reporters after picking the forms, Osunbor said his popularity and acceptability would win the state for the APC.

Recalling his short stint as governor in 2007/2008, the governorship hopeful said he would give priority to infrastructure, civil service reforms, health and education if elected.

The two-term senator said the forthcoming Edo governorship election was a must-win for the APC, adding that the party could not afford to lose the state.

“For many of us, this coming election is a must-win for Edo, no impediment, no matter how contrived and from whatever source, can stop our great party, APC, from reclaiming Edo in 2024.

“The mistakes which made APC lose the state to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2020 must not be allowed to afflict us a second time. For APC as a party, Edo is a low-hanging fruit.

“We must not lose this opportunity to reclaim it. With me as a candidate, my popularity and acceptability spread across the three senatorial districts of Edo and even beyond,” he said.

Osunbor said he is the best choice for the party to reclaim the state, adding that the people are waiting to have him return to Dennis Osadebe House in Benin.

Agbohmere promised to re-engineer governance in the state and build Edo metropolitan cities if elected as the next governor.

Agbohmere, who prides himself as a devoted and loyal party man, also promised to implement the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Edo State.

He told reporters at the party secretariat after obtaining expression of interest and nomination forms that his popularity, integrity and being loved by the President and as a son of Adams Oshiomhole would make victory possible for the party.

Unveiling his plans for the state, the security expert-turned-politician said: “I want to build Edo Metropolis City 1 and 2 because Edo city is congested. As a result, house rent is very expensive for our people.

“Edo State has no reason to suffer when it comes to road networks. My administration will focus on Edo Construction Company, which will build roads and provide services for other states. By so doing, we can generate more income.”

Edo 2024: APC chairman resigns, expresses optimism of picking governorship ticket

Edo State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Col. David Imuse (rtd.), has resigned from his position to participate in the governorship direct primary election on February 17.

The primary will determine the successor of Governor Godwin Obaseki in the upcoming September 21 poll.

In his resignation letter addressed to Edo APC’s deputy chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, Imuse highlighted the difficulty of his decision but deemed it necessary to focus on his governorship aspirations.

He expressed confidence in his victory, emphasizing the importance of adhering to APC’s constitution for a fair democratic process.

Imuse, from Edo Central Senatorial District, pledged continued efforts to support APC’s success in the September election, thanking party members for their trust and support in his leadership.

He said: “In pursuant to article 31(2) (iii) of the APC constitution 2022, as amended, I have decided to voluntarily resign my position as the Chairman of this great party in Edo State.

“This is borne out of my decision to enable me to get myself in the state of readiness to contest the next governorship election in Edo State?

“I want to sincerely thank every member of this great party, most especially the State Working Committee (SWC), and the State Executive Committee (SEC), for this rare opportunity given to me to serve at the apex office of the party in Edo State.”

Imuse also assured Edo residents that the governorship candidate of APC would be the winner on September 21, while urging the electorate to massively vote for the standard bearer of the party (APC), in order to ensure good governance.

Edo 2024: Poll shows 78% of voters support zoning

An Eagle Badger poll of 1,017 registered voters in Edo State has revealed that 78% of voters support zoning and power rotation.

Also, the number one pain point for voters across the three senatorial districts as the 2024 governorship election approaches is roads.

In a randomised telephone survey conducted on the 5th of January, 2024, voters across the three senatorial districts where asked a simple question: “Do you support power rotation and zoning the governorship across Edo North, Edo South and Edo North?” The majority of respondents across the state said they support the rotation of political power across the senatorial zones. 82% of respondents in Edo North said yes; 80% in Edo Central support zoning and 72% of respondents in Edo North support zoning as well.

However, when further asked where exactly political parties should zone their governorship tickets to, 73% of respondents picked Edo Central; 16% picked Edo South and 11% picked Edo North.

The two main reasons given for supporting zoning were “equity, fairness and justice” and “inclusiveness”. Conversely, the two alternative reasons given by those not in favour of zoning were that “competence” and “merit” should be the primary determinants of who emerges as governor.

Across the three senatorial districts the main issue respondents wanted the next governor to tackle was roads.

Respondents were aware that many of the inter-town highways were federal government roads; but they believed the State Government should intervene because the poor roads were affecting Edo residents; and were linked to poor economic outcomes and rising insecurity.

Sharon Orisakwe, Managing Director of Eagle Badger, stated that voters exhibited high levels of intention to vote in the upcoming elections and that more than 90% of respondents had collected their Permanent Voters Cards.

“There is some doubt in the minds of respondents about whether the 2024 Edo Governorship elections will be free and fair; as the majority of respondents stated they were not satisfied with the outcome of the 2023 General Elections. This of course may depress actual voter turnout on the day regardless of intent to vote; so parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must work hard to rebuild trust in the electoral process”, Ms. Orisakwe stated.

“Like we accurately captured in our national polls months before the 2023 Presidential Elections; there appears to be a similar sentiment in support of power rotation in Edo State. Gov. Adams Oshiomole from Edo North served for 8 years; then he was followed by the current governor Gov. Obaseki from Edo South who is currently ending his 8 year term.

“It will be interesting to track if this sentiment will affect the outcome of party primaries; and how much of an effect this power rotation sentiment will have on voter behaviour when elections occur in September.”

As candidates are yet to emerge from political party primaries, the Eagle Badger poll did not ask voters who they would vote for; however, the aspirants who respondents were most ’awareness’ of across the the political parties are Dr. Asue ighodalo in the PDP, Pastor Ize Iyamu in the APC and Barr. Kenneth Imansuangbon in the Labour Party.

INEC has announced that the Edo Governorship Election will take place on Saturday, 21st September, 2024.

Edo 2024: I am right man to be governor – Obaseki’s anointed aspirant

Asue Ighodalo, the anointed governorship aspirant of the Governor Godwin Obaseki, has stated that he is the best person to succeed Obaseki on November 12, 2024.

Ighodalo is one the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirants for the next year Edo governorship election.

He also claimed that he was nobody’s candidate for the crucial race, adding that he is ready to bring his experience of serving as chairman of various companies in Nigeria to bear, upon his being elected and inaugurated.

Ighodalo spoke on December 11, when he visited the secretariat of Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), at No. 20, Ogbesasa Street, off Sokponba Road, Benin.

He noted that he worked with Edo state’s former governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, between 2008 and 2016, while also doing the same for Obaseki.

Ighodalo, an indigene of Ewohimi in Edo Central Senatorial District, who is the Chairman of Alaghodaro Summit, stressed that he wanted to make the Southsouth state strong economically.

Edo, as the heart beat of the nation, according to the governorship aspirant, should have infrastructure as good roads, pipe-borne water, good hospitals, and good schools, among others, while disclosing that it was a tough decision for him to leave the private sector for politics.

He said: “I am the best man for the job. I am here to serve the state. I hear people saying I am someone’s candidate, but I can tell you that I am nobody’s candidate. All I will do is to bring my experience to bear, having been chairman of several top companies.

“I am coming from a comfort zone. I have the ability to do things for many more people, having done for fewer people in the corporate world.

“All of the experience and connections I have had all over the years will be brought to bear. I am committed and convinced that I can do it.

“I pledge to give youths the opportunity to serve in my government, because the youths have talents to build the state. Be assured that I am fully committed to uplift our state.”

Ighodalo urged members of the divided PDP in Edo to unite behind him, but he was silent on if he had reached the National Vice Chairman, Southsouth of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, the immediate Edo Chairman of PDP, who is leading the Legacy Coalition, and confronting Obaseki and his supporters.
