Edo govt demolishes property in Benin City linked to a notorious kidnapping gang

The Edo State Task Force has demolished a property on College Road, Aduwawa, Benin City, linked to a notorious kidnapping gang.

The property belonged to a woman whose younger brother, Osamede Asemota, is a key leader of the gang.

Asemota, who was arrested by the authorities, confessed to his involvement in kidnapping activities.

He revealed that his last mission earned him N350,000 and that he had kidnapped a woman from her store at Ramat Park, taking her to a bush area along Agbor Road.

The gang, comprising five members, had been responsible for several kidnappings in the Aduwawa, Eyan, and Auchi Bypass axis of Benin City. Asemota’s sister, who owns the demolished property, is said to be unaware of her brother’s activities as she resides abroad.

When asked how he felt about his sister losing her property due to his actions, Asemota expressed confusion and regret.

Asemota said, “We kidnapped the woman in her shop at Ramat Park and took her to the bush around Agbor Park. I was with her in the bush for 2 days while my share of the ransom money was later brought to me by my friends.

“We sometimes meet at this compound to plan and carry out our activities. The house belongs to my sister, who lives in Italy. I stay alone here, and I feel very sad and confused about this development. I don’t know how she will feel hearing this thing because she has been supportive of me, sending me money and other things. I feel really bad that I had to involve her property this way,” he lamented.

Another suspect, Michael Tare from Delta State, was also arrested in connection with the kidnapping. He revealed that he had received N1 million as his share of the ransom but returned to Benin due to greed, leading to his arrest.

The kidnap gang had demanded a ransom of N8 million from their victim and later demanded an additional N3 million, threatening to kidnap her again if she refused to pay.

The Edo State Task Force’s demolition of the property serves as a warning to those involved in criminal activities in the state.

The Benin Arsenal have been struggling all season culminating in the recent  resignation of Monday Odigie but  some  players said the fatherly  support of  Governor Okpebholo since he came on board has given them the necessary fillip to fight their way out of the relegation zone even as they made  clarion call on the state’s  number one citizen not to relent on his concerted efforts to keep the team out of the waters.

“Nobody is happy with our present position on the  NPFL table and we must thank our amiable Governor Monday Okpebholo who has shown so much enthusiasm towards our plight since he was sworn into office,” a member of the coaching crew who craved anonymity, told our correspondent on the team’s  return from Lafia on Thursday where they lost to  2-1 to Nasarawa United.

“But for the assistance of  Governor Okpebholo, we would have found it difficult to honour our last four matches because we were barely surviving before he came on board

“ But going forward, I think we need a well- structured management team in place  so that all necessary  logistics can be put in place towards the success of the team.

Governor Okpebholo has already shown that he has the interest of Insurance at heart, we are only seeking  further intervention so as to boost the morale of the team,” he added.

Speaking in the same vein, one of the players signed to bolster the chances of Insurance  in the on-going campaign, said the team  can  overcome their current difficult  with the firm  support of Governor Okpebholo, adding  the entire players have resolved  to  work their socks  starting with this weekend’s home game against the  visiting Plateau United.

“Of course, we can get  better  and this is even  more important  with the kind of support we are getting  from Governor Okpebholo,” he stated matter-of-factly. “What  we need more is  motivation  for this team because without adequate  financial support, it’s difficult to cope with the stress of playing in the NPFL.

“We came  back from Lafia where we narrowly lost to Nasarawa United   only on Thursday and on Saturday, we are facing  Plateau United.

“ I have no doubt that  we can bounce back  to our winning ways   but we can  only succeed  with  the full support of  the people and government of Edo State  and particularly, Governor Okpebholo,” he added.

Edo govt, APC clash over CVR

The Edo State government and All Progressives Congress (APC) are at loggerheads over the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the September 21 governorship election.

Commissioner for Communication and Orientation Chris Nehikhare, yesterday accused APC leaders of deliberate attempt to stir violence and cause crisis, all in a desperate move to halt the ongoing 10-day CVR.

Nehikhare also condemned the recent shooting at Idia College, Benin which, according to him, caused the injury of an innocent student. He described it as the ‘most troubling, disheartening, shameful, and never a way to play the opposition role expected of a responsible party’.

He said: “It is appalling that a political party would resort to attacking a CVR centre to obstruct eligible voters from registering to participate in an election they are participating in. One is left to wonder how the APC plans to get the people to vote for their candidate. We say no to such shenanigans and violence by the APC and its agents, and call on security agencies to rein in these agents of violence.”

But the APC Assistant Publicity Secretary, Victor Osehobo, described Nehikhare as ‘a comedian who was being economical with the truth’.

Osehobo said: “We expect Nehikhare and the PDP to be more serious, and help explain how their governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, came about the voter’s card he submitted on his INEC nomination forms, considering he only registered voter this week.
