Edo PDP to host first strategy session in Abuja Thursday

In its determined bid towards defeating rival political parties and sustaining Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP)’s hold on Edo State, the party will today hold an inaugural meeting that will demarcate responsibilities for strategy sessions.

Scheduled to begin by 11 am at the National Executive Committee (NEC) Hall at the PDP national headquarters at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, a select group of PDP governors, party heavyweights with experience in electioneering manoeuvres, as well as identified PDP stakeholders in Edo State are to kick-start what party leaders perceive as a victory march.

Last Thursday, PDP leaders, including its acting   National Chairman, Amb.  Ilya Damagum and Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, announced the constitution of 148-member National Campaign Council for the September 21, 2024 Edo State governorship election.

However, in a message circulated by the newly-appointed Secretary of Edo State PDP National Campaign Council, Pascal Adigwe, he said although the campaign council would be having its inaugural meeting at the party’s national secretariat, only members of the council and a very select few that were invited would be allowed to enter the venue on Thursday.

“I have been directed by the Chairman of the Edo State National Campaign Council, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, to invite members of the Edo Council for the inaugural meeting. Please note that attendance will be strictly only for Council members,” Adigwe said.

According to sources, after a brief formal inauguration, Edo State campaign council will immediately break out into strategy committees with special tasks that will determine the course of the political campaigns and election day activities.

“Teams will focus on responsibilities such as mobilising resources from PDP governors and other heavyweights, formation of committees for media operations, security committee that can relate well with all federal security agencies, election day mobilisation and counter-rigging efforts as well as how to monitor rival parties and deploy effective counter-strategies.”

“Governor Fintiri, who is leading the Edo State PDP governorship campaign council, is very resolute about actualising the assurances being given to the PDP national leadership about sustaining PDP’s hold on Edo State.

“He (Fintiri) as well as the entire PDP national leadership are convinced that incumbent Governor Obaseki has done a yeoman’s job that leaves Edo State voters in no doubt that PDP can even start contemplating victory songs, but a few apprehensive party members believe it is wise to keep the peace,” the source said.

Last Thursday,  Governor Fintiri, who will chair today’s inaugural session, declared that there was every assurance of victory, adding that party members within and outside Edo State should have no fear about victory in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

“We are ready for Edo, we will not leave anything to chance, we will leverage on Obaseki’s performance; we have low hanging political fruits in the two states (Edo and Ondo); we should go with all seriousness, we will match APC and with technology, rigging will be very minimal. So, PDP has bright chances in the two states,” Fintiri assured party leaders at the PDP headquarters.

Edo PDP: Division ahead of poll

Southsouth Bureau Chief BISI OLANIYI examines the division in the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its implications for the September 21 governorship election.

Sixteen political parties are participating in the crucial September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, to elect a politician that will succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki on November 12 this year.

The three leading parties in Edo are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Labour Party (LP).

The PDP governorship candidate is Dr. Asue Ighodalo, a Lagos-based lawyer; while the standard bearer of APC is Senator Monday Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District; and LP has as governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Ighodalo and Okpebholo are from Edo Central senatorial district, while Akpata is of Benin Kingdom in Edo South senatorial district, where PDP’s Obaseki also hails from.

Edo APC and LP have internal crises, which they are gradually resolving, but the problems and division in PDP are becoming overwhelming, with the major stakeholders of the party engaging in fight to the finish.

Obaseki became Edo state governor on November 12, 2016, through the support of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who was Edo governor between 2008 and 2016, but later emerged APC’s National Chairman, and currently represents Edo North senatorial district, despite the war declared against him by his political godson (Obaseki).

Edo governor, on June 19, 2020 defected from the then governing APC to PDP, ahead of the September 19, 2020 governorship election, through which he sought re-election, and won.

Obaseki, shortly after defecting to the PDP, wanted to control the party’s structures from the 192 wards to the state level, which was kicked against by the National Vice Chairman, Southsouth, of PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, a former Edo Chairman of the party, which made both of them to be at loggerheads.

Orbih, who is one of the allies of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, a former governor of Rivers state, is currently leading the anti-Obaseki’s Legacy Coalition in Edo PDP.

On June 18, 2024, the pro-Obaseki’s members of the PDP in Ward 2, Benin in Oredo Local Government Area, expelled Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, an ally of Orbih.

Ogbeide-Ihama, the immediate member representing Oredo constituency in the House of Representatives, who was a leading governorship aspirant on PDP’s platform in 2020 and 2024, but actually stepped down for Obaseki in 2020, in view of the intervention and pleas of prominent leaders of the party, was expelled for alleged anti-party activities.

The purported expulsion of Ogbeide-Ihama followed the resolution of an enlarged meeting by the ward members and executive, held on Airport Road in Benin.

The Chairman of PDP, Ward 2 in Oredo LGA, Lawrence Aguebor, while reading the resolutions, stated that the ex-federal lawmaker’s alleged expulsion followed his suspension by the ward executive and critical stakeholders of Oredo Ward 2, who met on May 3, 2024, and suspended him for 30 days, after which a disciplinary committee was set up.

Aguebor said: “The committee wrote Ogbeide-Ihama letters and called him on the phone, and sat five times, but he failed to appear.

“We have received the report and recommendations of the committee that recommended his expulsion from the PDP. His offences, for which he now stands expelled, are captured under section 58 (1) a, b, d, e, f, h, l, j, l.

“With the expulsion of Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, members of the general public are to cease and desist from doing any business that has to do with the PDP with him.”

The ward’s members of PDP also put Ogbeide-Ihama’s alleged expulsion to a voice vote, with all the members backing it.

The Special Adviser to Edo Governor on Political Matters, (Oredo), Victor Enoghama, claimed that the suspension and expulsion were long overdue.

Enoghama said: “Hon. Ogbeide-Ihama has donated his building at Ring Road by Sokponba Road Junction to the APC, to be used as campaign office for the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State.

“Ogbeide-Ihama’s suspension is long overdue. Let him join the APC family, as we cannot allow him to be in PDP, and be fraternising with the APC.

“We also call on the ward of the former Edo Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to follow suit and expel him from the PDP, also for anti-party activities.

“Shaibu also donated his campaign office on Airport Road, with vehicles, to APC for the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State. He cannot be in PDP and be supporting the APC.”

On June 19, Edo State Working Committee (SWC) of the PDP expelled, with immediate effect, Orbih, Shaibu, and Ogbeide-Ihama, for alleged anti-party activities.

Edo Publicity Secretary of PDP, Ogie Vasco, disclosed that the SWC’s meeting was attended by nine members at the party’s state secretariat on Airport Road, Benin.

Vasco said: “The SWC extensively deliberated on the issue and resolved to expel with immediate effect, Chief Dan Orbih and Comrade Phillip Shaibu. SWC also upheld the expulsion of Ogbeide-Ihama from Ward 2, Oredo LGA of Edo State.”

The Chairman of PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, also confirmed the expulsion of the three chieftains of the party, ahead of the September 21 poll.

Shaibu and Ogbeide-lhama, in the previous week, donated their governorship campaign offices, vehicles, and other facilities in Benin, to the governorship candidate of the APC in Edo, while Orbih angered members of SWC of PDP in Edo for accepting President Bola Tinubu’s appointment as a member of the governing board of the Federal College of Education, Umunze, Anambra State.

PDP’s National Vice Chairman, Southsouth, Chief Dan Orbih while reacting, declared that members of SWC of PDP in Edo had no power to expel him or any other member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

Orbih said: “The members of SWC of PDP in Edo State are amusing their paymasters. They have no power to expel a member of the NWC.

“When a group of persons, who are idle and have nothing to do, sits down to make pronouncement that are unconstitutional, it only shows that they are ignorant of the constitution of the PDP.

“They do not have power to suspend me, much less of expelling me or any other member of NWC of PDP, without strictly following the provisions of the constitution of the party.”

Shaibu, on June 19, while also reacting to his alleged expulsion from the PDP, stated that the action made it obvious that the party was sinking in Edo.

The former Edo deputy governor, who is an ex-member of the House of Representatives, erstwhile Majority Leader of Edo House of Assembly, and a former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), declared that the action of the members of SWC of PDP in Edo amounted to the antics of persons who were either drunk or mad.

Shaibu, who contested earlier this year in the PDP’s governorship primary election, against Obaseki’s anointed candidate (Ighodalo), stated that trading words with the leadership of the party in Edo state could be likened to engaging in a fisticuff with a mad man.

He said: “Replying them (members of SWC of PDP in Edo) is tantamount to glorifying them. No sane man will engage in a fight with a mad man. Watchers will not tell the difference. The mad action means that they are beginning to feel our punches.

“Anybody who is punched hard will feel the pains and cry. They are crying because of the impact of our body punches. I do not want to respond to their mad decision.”

The authentic members of the executive of PDP in Ward 2, Oredo LGA of Edo state also denied expelling from the party, a former representative of Oredo constituency in the House of Representatives (Ogbeide-Ihama).

Ward 2, Oredo executive of PDP, through the Chairman, Prince Kingsley Eleme; Secretary, Obadigie Jesuorobo; and 12 other members declared that the purported expulsion of Ogbeide-Ihama by allies of Obaseki was laughable, null, void and a joke taken too far.

The ward 2 executive members stated that no such action was discussed or carried out by them, but a faceless group of people, who might have come into the party through the backdoor, claimed to have expelled the great leader of PDP (Ogbeide-Ihama).

They declared that the actors in the alleged expulsion were not members of the executive of ward 2, Oredo of PDP, and had no power to carry out any action, on behalf of the party, much less of expelling a leader of the capacity of Ogbeide-Ihama.

Ward 2 executive members of PDP in Oredo LGA said: “Rt. Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama remains not just a member of PDP, but a prominent and formidable leader of the party in Ward 2, Oredo and Edo State, while he continues to enjoy the total support of members of PDP in Ward 2, Oredo LGA.

“It is expected that anyone who loves the PDP should, at this point, be focused on actions that will unite the party, ahead of the crucial September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State.

“We warn the mischief makers and impostors to desist forthwith from their criminal and divisive actions that can potentially harm PDP’s chances of success in the forthcoming poll, particularly in Oredo LGA of Edo State.”

The division in Edo PDP, and the unending fights of Obaseki with the foremost Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, over the looted artefacts being returned from Europe to the palace of the first-class monarch, will greatly affect the chances of PDP, Ighodalo, and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, at the poll.

A former Edo Deputy Governor, Comrade Phillip Shaibu, and the immediate representative of Oredo constituency of Edo state in the House of Representatives (Ogbeide-Ihama) were equally expelled from the PDP, with immediate effect, also for alleged anti-party activities.

Edo Publicity Secretary of PDP, Ogie Vasco, disclosed that the SWC meeting was attended by nine members at the party’s state secretariat on Airport Road, Benin.

I don’t wish worst enemies my kidnapping ordeals, says Edo PDP chair

Rescued Edo chairman of the governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr. Tony Aziegbemi has told Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, that he would never wish his worst enemies go through the ordeals in the kidnappers’ den.

The Aziegbemi, who warmly welcomed Shaibu and his allies to his palatial residence in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin recounting the difficult moments he faced in the hands of his abductors.

Edo PDP chairman, according to a statement by Shaibu’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebomhiana Musa, recounted the trauma and fears he endured while in captivity.

Shaibu pointed out his visit to Aziegbemi served as a symbol of solidarity, friendship and gratitude for his safe return.

The Edo Deputy Governor, who was full of excitement, stated that it was an atmosphere of joy and celebration during his visit to Edo chairman of PDP.

He said: “We came to celebrate Easter with our chairman, and also thank God for his safe return home, from the den of kidnappers.

“I have a personal bond with the family of Dr. Aziegbemi. Do not forget that I am the godfather to Aziegbemi’s twin-babies.”

Edo chairman of PDP, who is also an economist, was, however, silent on whether or not the demanded N500 million ransom was paid to the kidnappers before he regained his freedom.

Aziegbemi’s ally in PDP, Senator Odion Ugbesia, who earlier represented Edo Central Senatorial District, also confirmed the release of the state’s party chairman.

Kidnap of Edo PDP chairman: Operatives working to rescue Aziegbemi unhurt, says CP

Edo state commissioner of police, Funsho Adegboye, has disclosed that the command’s operatives are closing in on the gunmen who kidnapped Edo chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Aziegbemi, on Friday night.

Adegboye, who spoke with reporters in Benin yesterday, while parading some suspected criminals, revealed that the command had intensified patrol of the creeks around Ologbo, Obayantor and other parts of Edo.

He said: “We are not leaving any stone unturned, as we are already on the trail of the people that perpetrated the crime. I can assure you that in no distance time, we are going to rescue Dr. Tony Aziegbemi unhurt and unconditionally.

“Crime is crime, victim is victim. I want to let you know that we care for all. We do not want to profile victims, as if one is special over the other. No victim is above other victim.

  • Key aspirants eyeing Edo PDP governorship ticket

Key aspirants eyeing Edo PDP governorship ticket

Many aspirants are preparing for the governorship primary of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, which is scheduled for next month. In this report, Southsouth Bureau Chief BISI OLANIYI looks at the chances of the contenders

The Edo State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary, to produce the party’s flag bearer for this year’s off-cycle election, is likely to be held between February 1 and 24. It has been dubbed a fight-to-finish among the growing number of aspirants in the race. This is because of the bitterness and animosity that have been witnessed so far in the build-up to the election scheduled for September 21, to determine Governor Godwin Obaseki’s successor.

The primary is expected to be a fierce contest involving Governor Obaseki’s anointed aspirant, Asue Ighodalo, a Lagos-based lawyer; Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu; Anselm Ojezua, a former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who followed Obaseki to the PDP; John Yakubu, a former chairman of Esan Northeast Local Government; and whosoever emerges as the consensus choice of the Legacy Coalition led by Chief Dan Orbih, PDP National Vice Chairman (Southsouth) who is at war with Obaseki.

    Asue Ighodalo:

Asue Igbodalo appears to be the man to beat in the race for the party’s ticket. But, his challenge is the fact that he is being anointed by Governor Obaseki, who is increasingly looking like the new godfather of Edo politics. Obaseki had fought his former benefactor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, to a standstill because the latter was perceived as becoming overbearing as a godfather.

Igbodalo is a Lagos-based technocrat, like his benefactor (Obaseki). With the question mark over the performance of the former Lagos-based investment banker (Obaseki), according to many stakeholders, it will be suicidal to allow another Lagos-based technocrat to succeed him.

Obaseki is said to be backing Ighodalo who hails from Edo Central Senatorial District, which has not produced a governor, to ensure justice, equity and fairness. Ighodalo, a lawyer, is an indigene of Ewohimi, Esan Southeast Local Government Area. He was accused of inability to speak his native Esan language recently because he opted to address his people in English, rather than in the Esan language.

But, the governorship aspirant has described himself as a true Esan boy. He said: “I am a true Esan boy. I am a true Edo boy. I am a true Nigerian. That is what I am. Since 2008, I have been in the economic team of the state, starting from the administration of Comrade Governor (Adams) Oshiomhole. Since Godwin Obaseki came in as the chairman of the Economic Team, I have been coming to Edo State to support and advise the government.

“I have been advising since 2008, which is 15 years ago, which means that I came into Edo State, five, six, so many times a year for government business, not to talk about my own business. So, people can say what they like. Because we are not noisy, and because we are not jumping from one ‘mama put’ to another does not mean am not a true Edo boy.”

Ighodalo believes he is the best person to succeed Obaseki. He refuted the allegation that he was being propped up by the governor. Rather, he said he is in the race to bring his experience of serving as chairman of various companies in Nigeria to bear in serving the Edo people, upon his being elected and inaugurated.

The aspirant who spoke when he visited the secretariat of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City, the Edo State capital, stressed that he wants to make the Southsouth state strong economically. His words: “I am the best man for the job. I am here to serve the state. I hear people saying I am someone’s candidate, but I can tell you that I am nobody’s candidate. All I will do is to bring my experience to bear, having been chairman of several top companies. I am coming from a comfort zone. I can do things for many more people, having done for fewer people in the corporate world.”

He urged members of the PDP in Edo State to support his aspiration.

    Philip Shaibu:

Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, a former member of the Edo State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives, insisted that loyalty to Obaseki had nothing to do with his ambition to succeed the latter as governor. He maintained that he would vie for the ticket to succeed his boss during this year’s election.

The erstwhile national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) insisted during his declaration for the governorship race in Benin that nothing and that no one can stop his aspiration to take part in the primary on the platform of the PDP, and succeed Obaseki.

The declaration was initially fixed for Eterno Hotel, Aiguobasimwin Crescent, off Ikpokpan Road, Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Benin City. However, it had to be shifted to another venue because some allies of Obaseki had fixed a meeting of Finish Well Group (FWG), supporters of Governor Obaseki for the same venue on that same date. The idea is to campaign for Ighodalo, who is perceived as the governor’s anointed candidate. It must be noted that Governor Obaseki is furiously against the aspiration of Shaibu who hails from Edo North Senatorial District to succeed him.

It was to prevent a confrontation and to ensure peace that Shaibu decided at the eleventh hour to move his declaration to Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, located within the St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road in Benin City.

Shaibu, however, maintained that he remained undeterred, focused, and determined to be victorious. He said: “Back in the day, you did not just call me ‘Mr. Constituency Project,’ for nothing. In my time as a legislator, I delivered 49 constituency projects at the state level and 13 solid constituency projects within my short stint at the federal level. I have fought the good fight for you, my people. Along the way, I suffered humiliations and enjoyed many moments of victory, but I am thankful for all things.

“I have been pressed, but not crushed, persecuted but not abandoned, badly hurt but not destroyed. I resonate with the tireless and irrepressible spirit of the Edo people. By the grace of God, nothing and no one can stop us. After all, I am an original Edo son, a 100 per cent homeboy.

“This is why today, I stand before you with great conviction and resolve, as I declare my intention to run for the office of the governor of Edo State, on the platform of the PDP, in the upcoming 2024 election, and I am confident that with your support, we can take Edo State to even greater heights.”

The deputy governor also noted that the people of Edo came from a lineage of greatness. He said their ancestors built the “Old Bini Empire” on bold ideas, breath-taking innovations and matchless diligence and that from the “Great Moat of Benin” to the world-famous “Benin Bronze Works”, their ancestors dominated their times, led the Nigerian dream from the front, and created novel frontiers for the future.

He said: “When Edo State was created in 1991, our brilliant leaders, fully aware of our ancestral destiny named us ‘The Heart Beat of The Nation.’ That was not an ordinary slogan. It was a call to destiny…mandate that we must collectively achieve.

“As your deputy governor in the last seven years, I have had the privilege of working closely with our amiable governor, His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki, to lay a solid foundation for progress in Edo State. Under our administration, we have seen remarkable achievements and milestones, but there is still much work to be done.

“I am aware of the need by the greater Edo people for a more inclusive government; a government of the Edo people, by the Edo people, and for the Edo people; a government of individuals who have been there and know the pains and wishes of an average Edolite. A government, together, with the greater Edo people, will reignite the Edo spirit and transform our tomorrow.

“Since my foray into politics three decades ago, I have lived among you and you have loved me as your very own son. I have felt your pains at close quarters, sat with the elders to benefit from their words of wisdom, led the youths in many struggles for their rights, visibility and freedom, learned the intricacies of modern governance and built adequate service capacity.

    Anselm Ojezua:

Anselm Ojezua is a leading governorship aspirant on the platform of PDP. Ojezua, a lawyer, hails from Edo Central Senatorial District, has assured that his administration would give security top priority. He also expressed displeasure over the unbelievably high cost of access to health. He said if the challenge is not addressed adequately, it would spell doom for the majority of the people.

Ojezua, a former Edo APC chairman, who defected alongside Governor Obaseki to the PDP, from the APC, on June 19, 2020, ahead of the crucial September 19, 2020 governorship election, spoke with reporters in Benin recently about his aspiration.

He declared that his administration would have zero tolerance for open grazing, with his government initiating policies that would ensure that farmers who deal in livestock had no reason to clash with those who engage in crop farming.

The governorship aspirant, who was Commissioner for Information in the administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, noted that the challenges facing the health sector has been compounded by the growing incidence of brain drain and that it now requires an urgent attention.

He said: “I am one of those who believe that no security can be as effective as local security, which brings us to the issue of state police. I am one of those who believe that state police is essential, and that it is imperative, but until that is constitutionally made possible, whatever arrangements that are already in place can be improved upon. With the Edo Security Network which has been established, I know that funding has been improved upon and we have to look at how best they can be effective.

“What I have found out over time is that these so-called herdsmen are a group of people that likes to live inside the bush; they will go and create settlements inside the bush. Some of them even legitimise their stay by making payments to traditional rulers, whether they call it royalty, rent or whatever. They make payments and they will go and stay inside the bush. I know that at a point, security meetings were held and we resolved that we no longer tolerate people living in the bush. Ideally, people should live and co-exist with other members of the community. We welcome anybody, whether you are a Nigerian, or not, to come and stay where people stay, not in the bush. So, we are going to try very hard to fight that.

“The immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari, talked about grazing routes, something that was done in the 60s, but the then Attorney-General of the Federation could not tell him that since then, the Land Use Act has been promulgated, which has negated all that he was saying. All lands in every state are vested in the governor of the state. So, whatever route you had in the past, they are no longer there, and it cannot be as of right just the same way anybody can come to Edo and say he wants to set up an industry. If you want to set up a ranch, you can come and do that, but it must be in a confined environment. The idea of just roaming around is unacceptable.

“We had a situation somewhere in Esan Southeast Local Government, the settlement in the bush had more population than the indigenes around them, should there be any altercation, they would wipe the indigenes out.”

    Legacy Coalition:

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, there were parallel primaries by Obaseki and the Dan Orbih factions of the PDP. Nevertheless, the court eventually favoured candidates that emerged from the primaries organised by the Obaseki faction, thereby making the numerous supporters of Orbih to vote massively for the candidates of the APC or the Labour Party (LP).

Besides Charles Idahosa, the legacy coalition also has other aspirants in the race. They include two ex-members of the House of Representatives, in the person of Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama and Sergius Ogun, as well as a former Edo Women Leader of the APC, Dr. Esosa Amadasun; an ex-Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Frank Okiye: a former Commissioner in Oshiomhole’s administration, Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo; and a senatorial candidate of PDP in Edo North, Pascal Ugbmohe; among other prominent politicians.

    John Yakubu:

John Yakubu was the running mate to Edo PDP’s governorship candidate in 2016, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. The former Chairman of Esan Northeast Local Government Council, recently described himself as a trader in an interactive session with reporters in Benin.

He said aspiring to govern a state like Edo should be for men, not boys. He said: “Social media have made governorship aspiration very easy. Out of the numerous governorship aspirants in Edo State, ahead of the September 21, 2024 election, 90 per cent do not have offices in Benin City but are ‘popular’ on social media.

“Most politicians are incurable optimists. Nobody will stop anybody’s political or governorship aspiration. Politicians have the right to aspire, but the electorate will separate the men from the boys. We are pushing for true reconciliation in Edo Central PDP. Ahead of the governorship primary election, the aggrieved members of the party would have agreed to sheathe their swords, to have a formidable PDP.”

Sept 2 LG poll: Edo PDP, APC leaders fight over alleged plan to buy votes, rig

The September 2 this year’s local government election in Edo State has led to a fight between the leaders of the governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Edo Chairman of PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, yesterday afternoon in Benin, first raised the alarm over an alleged plot by an unnamed director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), who was described as a leading member of the APC in Edo, to rig and buy votes during the crucial poll with N150 million from the Federal Government’s interventionist agency (NDDC).

The Executive Director, Finance and Administration (EDFA) of NDDC, Maj.-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (rtd.), who is a chieftain of APC in Edo state, while addressing the chairmanship and councillorship candidates of APC in the seven LGAs of his Edo South Senatorial District, however, dismissed Aziegbemi’s allegation, describing it as a figment of his imagination.

Airhiavbere, yesterday evening in his palatial residence at the Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Benin, in company with a former Edo Deputy Governor, Chief Lucky Imasuen, and Edo Secretary of APC, Lawrence Okah, assured that the chairmanship and councillorship candidates from Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Egor, Ovia Northeast, Ovia Southwest, Orhionmwon and Uhunmwonde LGAs in Edo South senatorial district, and other parts of Edo would emerge victorious, without rigging or vote buying.

The APC chieftain said: “The election is exactly a week away. What evidence does Edo PDP chairman have that APC leaders want to buy votes with N150 million? There is nothing like that. Aziegbemi and other leaders of PDP in Edo State are already jittery. APC has come to take charge in Edo State. They are already getting the feelers. It has nothing to do with NDDC.

“All they (Edo leaders of PDP) are seeing is that there seems to be an underground movement that APC’s candidates will emerge victorious in next Saturday’s LG election. We are not going to change. There will be more rumours, and we are ready to debunk them.

“We have a new President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is very keen to make sure that victory comes to his party (APC). We are strategising to make sure that we prepare the ground that we will win. We are not saying that because PDP is the ruling party in Edo State, and we will go to sleep. We will struggle for APC’s candidates to emerge victorious on Saturday. We are sensitising the public and doing all the necessary rallies/campaigns, and convincing the electorate that APC is the party to beat.”

Edo PDP chairman further claimed that intelligence available to the party revealed that the unnamed director of NDDC would be sharing the N150 million at his residence in Benin, to leaders and members of the APC, in order to finance the rigging plan, ahead of next Saturday’s election in Edo.

Aziegbemi said: “We are once again drawing the attention of the world and all lovers of democracy to the glaring fact that the APC is attempting to rig the local government election, scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, by mobilising N150 million from NDDC to execute their evil plan to buy votes and rig the election.”

While also reacting, Edo Chairman of APC, Col. David Imuse (rtd.), in a press statement by the party’s Assistant Publicity Secretary in the state, Victor Osehobo, described Edo PDP as a dead party.

Imuse said: “Edo APC is ashamed over the spurious allegation made by the beleaguered factional Chairman of the PDP in the state, Tony Aziegbemi, regarding a plot to rig and buy votes in the upcoming local government election, using N150 million from NDDC.

“The allegation is baseless and unfounded, but coming from a decapitated body, it is understandable. The Edo PDP is on life support. Nevertheless, the Edo APC is committed to a free and fair election process, and we believe in the power of our people to choose the next crop of local government leaders, without any external interference or manipulation. But this is a far cry with the junta in Edo.

“The factional PDP chairman’s allegation is misleading and lacking in evidence. The NDDC operates independently, and has its own budget and priorities. Any insinuation that NDDC’s funds will be used for illegitimate purposes is a blatant attempt to tarnish the reputation of the commission and the APC, but Aziegbemi cannot understand this.

“We also find it ironic that the Edo PDP whose leader, for want of a better label, Governor Godwin Obaseki, has already written the results of the election, with PDP candidates as chairmen and councillors across the 18 local government areas, is the party raising concerns.

“As a party of losers, the PDP has shamelessly gone round the state in a charade with its leader, Obaseki, parading projects and programmes that have suffered stillbirth since he took office.”

  • Edo PDP vows to secure votes

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has assured its supporters that it would defend their votes

It urged them to go out and cast their votes without fear of intimidation or harassment.

Chairman Dan Orbih, who addressed reporters in Benin City, said results would not be written if the people go out to vote and remained vigilant.

He said: “We want the election to be free and fair. People should be allowed to go out and vote. The people should be free to choose who to lead this country. What we hear is that they want to rig and write results.

“I want our supporters to go out and do their part. There is no way any results can be written if the people voted and remained vigilant. Saturday is for our people to choose between democracy and dictatorship. It is a choice between development and poverty.”

Group to SSS, EFCC: Invite Orbih to prove IDP rice allegation

Members of Concerned Citizens of Edo State (CCES), a non-governmental organisation, have called on the Nigeria Police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the State Security Service (SSS) to invite Dan Orbih, chairman, Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for proof of his allegation that the Edo State government diverted bags of rice meant for Internally Displaced (Persons IDPs).

President of the association, Mr Ogbewi Aghedo, said that “There are several dimensions to this allegation. The credibility of the Edo State government has been called to question by the allegation. The Edo State PDP chairman has also by that comment, accused the state government of criminal diversion of the relief materials approved for internally displaced persons and yet another diversion is the indictment of a Senator from Ondo State, whose name was not given by Orbih.

“You will agree with me that these are weighty allegations and cannot be equated with mere politicking. These alleged crimes fall within the purview of the police, the EFCC and the SSS and the recorded audio interview of Dan Orbih on Independent Radio is sufficient material for preliminary investigation by these security agencies.”

Aghedo said its members are aware that the state government has petitioned the state commissioner of police. “This a step in the right direction. The allegation is an attack on the integrity of the state government and it is only proper for the state to rise up to the occasion and demand proof.”

The allegation, according to Aghedo, “is equivalent to whistle blowing and as you are aware, when you have your facts and proof, the federal government will reward you for blowing the whistle, but if you blow a false whistle, we all know the implication.”

He added that as a stakeholder in the nation’s democracy project, its activities includes identifying actions and inactions that pose threat to the lives of the ordinary Edo people and Nigerians alike, defend them against obnoxious policies and laws and defend pro-people policies and programmes, amongst others.

Edo PDP chairman alleged on a live radio programme on Thursday in Benin City, that over 300 bags of rice approved for internally displaced persons were diverted by the Edo State government to the house of an Ondo State Senator.

Orbih was quoted as saying on the Independent Radio pidgin English programme, Man Around Town: “This thing no be matter Edwey them take debate. Them carry this rice go give one Senator for Ondo, that one na Internally displaced person? We get record for how them take share this rice among themselves.

“Them carry this rice on a Sunday go one house before By-pass. On a Sunday, because make people no see wetin them dey do. We have all these records. We know the movements. We know what they were doing. I was just watching them to see whether these people get heart.”
