  • Police in Edo arrest 346 suspects in 3 months

    The Police Command in Edo on Wednesday disclosed that it arrested no fewer than 346 suspects for various crimes in the state from February till date.

    The state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mohammed DanMallam who made the disclosure to journalists in Benin, said the suspects included secret cult members, ritualists, and other hoodlums who specialised in different crimes.

    .DanMallam said they included the alleged mastermind of the killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), a pregnant female officer and two others in Afuze, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo.

    He said the suspected killers of the policemen confessed that they committed the crime in order to free their colleagues who were in police custody for motorcycle theft.

    While disclosing that 141 cases were reported in the command within the period, he noted that the command charged 110 of the cases to court.

    He further disclosed that 218 suspects were charged to court within the period while 55 arms and 191 ammunition were recovered from them.

    The CP stressed that the feat was achieved through the collaboration of sister agencies, adding that the command was determined to rid the state of crimes and criminality.

    He urged the public to give useful information to the police while giving assurance that the command would deal with any officer who violated the ethics of policing in the state. (NAN)

  • Police arrest 4 armed robbery, kidnap suspects in Edo

    The Edo Command of the Nigerian Police says it has arrested four armed robbery and kidnap suspects in the state.

    The Command’s Spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, said in a statement that the suspects were arrested based on credible intelligence through the Directorate of State Security (DSS).
    He said that the office of the IGP had alerted that the suspects were planning coordinated attacks against police formations in the state.

    He said that based on this, Edo Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed DanMallam, directed the tactical team of the command to go after the suspects.

    He further said that a robust raiding, coding and search was conducted within Auchi axis of the state which led to the arrest of the suspects on Friday.

    He said some items recovered from the suspects included a vehicle, one Pump Action, two locally made guns, 20 live cartridges, charms, two face masks and a pair of police mobile force uniform.

    He appealed to members of the public to be vigilant and always be at alert about suspicious movement and report same to the police. (NAN)

    ‘I kidnap my girlfriend to raise money for wedding’

    A-24 year old man, Micheal Duda, has said that he kidnapped his teenage girlfriend identified as Victory Aseguah with the intention of raising money for their wedding.

    Micheal was paraded alongside 104 suspects arrested for various crimes ranging from kidnapping, rape, armed robbery and cultism at the headquarters of the Edo Police Command.

    He said the girlfriend just finished secondary school and there was no way he could approached the parents that he want to marry their daughter.

    Speaking to newsmen Thursday, Micheal said he kept the girl in his house for four days and asked her father to pay him the sum of N2m.

    Micheal who said he sells dispensable cups admitted that he had sex with the girl all through the four days the girl spent in his house.

    “I live at Ekae community off Sapele road. She came to my house. We planned to collect money from her father to raise money for our marriage but I did not collect the money again. She stayed in my house for four days.

    “I couldn’t tell the father I want to marry his daughter. She said her father would not support the idea because she was yet to go to the university. She was with me for four days. The man said he has no money to pay. I was at home with the girl when police came and arrested me.”

    But Victory who was present at the parade said they met on facebook and after several days, she decided to visit him.

    Victory said she was surprised that the boy kidnapped her when she got there and heard that the boy demanded for N4m from her father.

    Elder sister of Victory, Rodha, said her sister was sexually abused before the police rescued her.

    On the alleged plans to get married, she laughed saying, “My sister is 16 years old and has never slept outside before. She told me they met on facebook and the boy professed love to her. When she went to the house, she said the boy hatched the plan and said he would collect N10,000 from our father but the boy demanded for N4m.

    “He will lock her inside the house and called us threatening that he will kill her if we did not pay. He took advantage of my sister’s condition.”

    “She told me the boy is 21 and a student but she later saw that it was a lie. We took her for treatment after the rescue.”

    Also, three suspects that allegedly killed Prof. Paul Otasowie of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in the University of Benin were paraded.

    Late Prof. Otasowie  was killed in October 4 at his residence at Evbuotubu area in Egor local government area.

    Names of the suspect were given as Osaze Oghogho, Best Ogumode and Happy Okoro.

    The suspects said they never intended to kill Prof. Otasowie but to collect his car and used it for armed robbery.

    They said he was mistakenly shot when he rushed at Osaze who was holding the gun.

    According to Osaze, “We decided to go for street robbery when we saw a vehicle driving out, so we decided to collect the car. I asked the man to give me the car keys but he threw the keys away. I shot into the air. As I was loading another bullet, the man embraced me and during the struggle, the gun exploded.”

    Speaking to newsmen, Police Commissioner, Babatunde Kokumo , said the police suspects would soon be charged to court.

    He listed items recovered within three weeks included five AK 47 rifles, military weapons. 33 cut to size guns, motor-cycles, 90 live AK 47 ammunition, 234 live cartridges, assorted vehicles and the sum of N1.2m.

    Woman raped, killed after church service in Edo

    A 33-year old woman identified as Akhere Emujede has been raped and murdered at Ubiaja town, headquarters of Esan South East Local Government.

    Her corpse was dumped in a church within the locality.

    Eyewitnesses said the victim’s throat was slit and vital organs removed from her body.

    She was said to have attended a church programme from a neighboring village but was killed.

    The killing of Akhere has brought cases of suspected ritual killings in Ubiaja to seven within six days.

    A human head was said to have been dumped in front of a school principal office and another body was found within the school premises.

    Principal of the school, Patrick Odensenye, said he was taken aback when the found the human head in front of his office.

    Other mutilated bodies were found in different parts of the community.

    Rev. Dr. Joseph Ehimen in charge of the church where Akhere body was found said they open the church to discover her corpse.

    During Tuesday plenary at the State House of Assembly, the lawmaker representing the Esan South East, Festus Edughele, raised the alarm of presence of ritualist in the community.

    He said the suspected ritual killings has spread fears in the minds of residents in the area.

    Acting Public Relations Officer for Edo State Police Command SP Stephen Onwochei who confirmed the incident appealed for information that would assist the police.

    His words, “We received information that a young girl was found dead inside a church at Ubiaja area of Edo State.

    “Her name is Akhere Emujede, 33, it is so unfortunate but the command is investigating. For now, no arrest has been made, our men have profiled the scene of crime”.

    Seven die in Edo road accident

    Seven persons have been confirmed dead in a road accident when a Toyota Haice bus rammed into a packed Iveco trailer at Ute village along Benin-Lagos by-pass.

    The bus with registration number LAGOS EKY-733 XD was said to be conveying passengers from Lagos.

    Witnesses said it lost control and collided with the stationary truck with registration number SMK 799 XN at about 12:30 pm.

    Spokesman for Edo State Police Command, DSP Stephen Onwochei, who disclosed this to newsmen, said bodies of the victims have been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) mortuary.

    He said the casualties included four females and three males including the driver of the passenger bus.
